Dear families

Summer QuadI enjoyed my trip to Timaru and the opportunity to watch our girls taking part in the annual Summer Quad Tournament where we competed against St Margaret’s, St Hilda’s Collegiate

and Craighead Diocesan School who hosted the event this year. They all competed with passion in Debating, Volleyball, Touch, Swimming and Tennis and it was wonderful to be able to see some of their games. We had mixed results but an enjoyable time and a chance to reconnect with friends.

Visit to Year 9 CampGirls in Years 7, 8 and 9 have all enjoyed camps this term. I was fortunate to visit the Year 9 camp and get to know this group of girls better. My thanks to the staff team who organise and support the girls at these worthwhile events. As well as testing themselves with challenges it is also the opportunity to get to know others and to establish firm friendships within the year levels.

Rained OffIt was such a shame our New Entrant PTA BBQ, which was to be held on Sunday 26 February, had to be cancelled because of the weather.

From the Principal Term 1 Awards AssemblyOn Friday 24 February we held our first Awards Assembly for the year to recognise, with the presentation of Pockets and Colours, the girls who have achieved highly in their NCEA results. This year we had the highest number of Elite colours ever presented. Elite colours are awarded to those who gained 100% of Excellence grades in their best five subjects. As well as having the highest number awarded we also had these awarded in a very diverse range of subjects such as Art, Media Studies, Music, Accounting and French to name a few. Congratulations to the 16 girls in Years 12 and 13 who achieved this status.

We also had the opportunity to hear from alumna, Amy Lee, who is a 3rd year Medical student at the University of Auckland as well as an outstanding musician. She encouraged the girls to “Be confident and not to let the negative self-talk, 'I don’t think I can do this' take control" - timely words for the girls as it connects to the Senior Leaders’ theme this year of 'Be Bold and Break Barriers'.

From the Deputy PrincipalParent EveningsWe thank you for attending these events and taking the opportunity to engage with one another as

well as with key staff. Our appreciation also goes to members of the PTA, to the Year 13 Form Seniors and to our catering staff for supporting the social aspect of these evenings.

We look forward to seeing parents at the Year 10 evening which is scheduled for Monday 13 March at 7.00pm.

Personal Development PlansThere will be no classes on Wednesday 15 March, which has been set aside for Swimming Sports and Personal Development Plan (PDP) interviews. PDP interviews can also be arranged with Tutors at mutually acceptable times.

For more information on PDPs please refer to the Family Handbook http://rangilife.school.nz/publications/handbooks/

School Drop Off Rather than using the onsite carparks, we encourage you to park a safe distance away and allow your daughter to take a short walk to and from school.

If crossing Rossall Street, girls must use the pedestrian islands.

Do please discuss with them their vulnerability on the roads and establish safe practices with them.

School Opening and Closing TimesPlease be aware that in term time the school is open between 8.00am and 5.00pm and there are staff members on site. We are aware that a number of girls are at school outside of these times and we cannot take responsibility for their wellbeing when this is the case. For students waiting to be collected after 5.00pm when the Gibson Centre closes, we ask that they are picked up from the Boarding House which offers a safe and supervised environment.

Early Finish Thursday 9 MarchWe are fortunate to have the internationally recognised expert in positive psychology, Caroline Adams Miller, presenting to our staff and St Margaret’s staff on the role schools play in cultivating grit and character strengths in young people so that they are better able to handle stress, disappointment and setbacks. Classes will finish at 2.20pm.

We urge parents and girls to attend the evening at St Margaret’s on Wednesday 8 March – a collaborative initiative in the interest of both of our communities. Click here to book tickets >>

Intruders on SiteWe have been unfortunate to have had some bike stolen and personal items taken from lockers twice in the past month. We have provided police with footage and several leads and are hoping for a positive result. We thank you and your daughters for the way everyone has responded to these break-ins.

classes will be taking place in Term 2. Lynda is well qualified in teaching self-defence skills and does so in a realistic and practical manner. This course is very popular with the girls and has a very positive impact on students as they learn strategies and become more confident in their ability to protect themselves should the need arise.

The course is extremely good value at a total cost of $30 incl GST for the five sessions. The cost and of this course will be charged to parents via the gold sheet. We trust these arrangements will be suitable. Please contact Debbie Robertson if you wish to discuss this matter further.

PreschoolThis year has started with two exciting new programme additions for the children and families of the preschool.

Each Wednesday Brad Hemopo, Rangi Ruru Te Reo teacher, will be with us for a Kapa Haka and te Reo session. The children are eager to learn more and are thoroughly enjoying having Brad with us. We look forward to how this programme will add depth to the bicultural practices and knowledge we share within our centre.

We are pleased to announce that we have introduced a regular timetabled gymnasium slot on Fridays in which to provide a PMP – Perceptual Motor Programme. PMP is a programme which aims to develop the child’s perceptions and understandings of himself or herself in relation to his/her world, through movement/motor experiences. It’s been said that experience is the greatest teacher and for young children, experience comes from physical, emotional and sensory interaction with everyday life. As they move and explore, the brain takes in sensory information, organising it through new neural pathways, then storing it in the memory for future reference. Movement grows the brain and prepares it for further learning.

The preschool can currently offer places to prospective enrolments, so we are looking forward to a term where new friends may be joining our wonderful community and family.

Sustainability UpdateThe Rangi Ruru Sustainability Executive focus for 2017 will be to calculate and analyse the greenhouse gases emitted from school and its associated activities. As a community we will take steps to reduce emissions and work towards becoming a carbon neutral school.

This year we will continue to be committed to:• healthy food choices prepared

onsite• promoting our water only policy• growing fruit, vegetables and

herbs for the kitchen• Meat free Monday lunches• being a Fair Trade School• source separation of waste to

minimalise rubbish landfill.

We have established a Reuse Station next to the Dining Room to collect a wide range of products including: coffee capsules, toothbrushes and oral care products and packaging, Collective NZ and Fonterra suckies packaging and Glad food products.

These items are reused through the Terracycle programme and made into gym equipment, road

bollards, park benches and rubbish bins. For every item sent, Rangi receives two cents for our chosen charity, Cool Earth. All soft plastics (capable of being scrunched up) can now be taken to collection bins at New World, PAK’nSAVE and The Warehouse.

As consumers, by making good choices such as taking cloth bags to the supermarket and taking advantage of reuse collections, our Rangi community can dramatically reduce waste and our impact on the environment.
