May-June 2012 Ranger Roundup Dr. William Wagner, Principal Lakewood High School Sponsler,Pennington PTA C0-Presidents 14100 Franklin Boulevard, Lakewood, Ohio 44107 216.529.4028 Greetings from the Principal’s Office What a Great Year... Plan Now for Summer! The end of this school year is right around the corner, and this has been a fantastic school year by any measure. Since September, we have had an unprecedented number of students receive awards, honors, and recognition at the local, regional, state and national levels. Thank you for helping to fill this year with fun, growth, and fantastic learning for all. May and June are wonderful months in the school year. The weather is nice outside, the flowers are blooming, and a well-deserved extended vacation is right around the corner. It is very easy for students during this time to get “tired” or distracted. In addition, there are all kinds of year-end concerts, activities, award programs and special events that can consume our students’ time and attention. Please do all you can to help your student stay focused and sharp these last few weeks so we can all have a productive and successful end of the school year. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. This month will go by quickly and students should also be preparing for final exams. Senior final exams are May 31, June 1 and June 4. Underclass final exams are June 4 - 7. Students will be involved in end-of-the-year projects and final examinations during the last few weeks of school. With five children of my own, I’ve experienced how difficult it is to squeeze in even a few days of vacation when everyone can be together. However, please make vacation and travel plans for after June 7th as family vacations are not considered excused absences from school according to state attendance guidelines. We do our best to accommodate unique situations, but greatly appreciate your understanding and assistance. As always, we sincerely appreciate your ongoing support and partnership as we work together to help your student be successful… Every Period, Every Day. Thank you for another great school year! Sincerely yours with Ranger Pride, Bill Wagner

District Message

A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT May and June are always an exciting time of year in our district with concerts, plays and Spring Flings filling the calendar. At the high school, seniors are counting down the days to graduation and enjoying the many traditions that go along with this rite of passage, such as Prom.

As this is the last newsletter of the year for many schools, I wanted to take this opportunity to extend congratulations and well wishes to our seniors as they move on to the next chapter of their lives, whether that be college, the military or directly into the working world. As the school year winds down, it’s a good time to reflect on the many outstanding accomplishments of our students and staff. The following is just a sampling of some of these at the high school: • Three LHS students named National Merit Semifinalists and five named Commended Scholars • LHS Principal Bill Wagner named Ohio Principal of the Year • Numerous LHS and West Shore students garnered prestigious are art awards including a national medal winner in the Scholastic Art & Writing Contest • LHS Choir director Lisa Hanson named Ohio Teacher of the Year by Ohio Music Educators Association • Two LHS students selected for the All-National Honor Orchestra  Three LHS students qualified for the state championship tournament in their respective sports Look for a more complete listing of our district staff and student accomplishments on our district web site in the near future. Congratulations to all our students and staff on another fine year at Lakewood City Schools!

New York Times Bestseller, The Other Wes Moore. Get ready for the true story about two kids with the same name, from the same tough Baltimore neighborhood. Join your son or daughter and read this fascinating story!

From the Book’s Website: “Told in alter-nat-ing dra-matic nar-ra-tives that take

read-ers from heart-wrenching losses to moments of sur-pris-ing redemp-tion, The Other Wes Moore tells the story of a gen-er-a-tion of boys try-ing to find their way in a chal-leng-ing and at times, hos-tile world.”

After Prom is nearly here! Thanks to everyone who has been working so hard to make this a great event for our seniors! We’ve had great response to our fundraising efforts and are really excited about what the kids will find when they walk in the door of the East Cafeteria at 11:30 pm on Saturday, May 12! We still need your help though in lots of ways: • We need food donations. We need cut up fruit (pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes, bananas, strawberries, etc) separated in one gallon bags; cut up veggies (celery, carrots, peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, etc.) separated in one gallon bags; pasta salad (any kind of pasta with Italian dressing and cut up veggies) in one gallon bags; and brownies and cookies. These items can be dropped off at the high school in the East cafeteria after 7 pm on May 12. • We need help decorating and setting up. We will start transforming the East end of the high school at 3 pm on Friday, May 11 and continue most of the day on Saturday (don’t worry, we’ll break to go home to get the kids ready for the prom and see them off!). Come up and we’ll put you to work! • We need help the night of the event. We need folks to help serve food, to help with security, to help with the entertainment and to help clean up. We have two more meetings, Thursday, May 3 at 7 pm in the L-Room and Thursday, May 10 at 7 pm in the East Cafeteria. Please plan to attend to sign up to help and to hear about the final plans for what’s going to be a fun event for everyone. If you have any questions, please contact Missy Neumman at 440.668.5387 or [email protected] or Vicki Smigelski at 216.789.5020 or [email protected].

Lakewood Music Boosters will have their next general membership meeting on Monday, May 14th at 6:30 in the LHS band room. [Note the change of time!] Election of the 2012-2013 Board will be the main order of business. Those members attending the district’s Celebration of Excellence will be able to get to the Civic in a timely manner for the beginning of the program. There are MANY concerts at all grade levels in the next month. Please consider volunteering your time to sell tickets, concessions, T shirts, or 50/50 raffle tickets. Look for the LMB email blast soon! Scholar-ships will be awarded to many worthy students for study this summer. This is one of the many benefits for members of Lakewood Music Boosters. We con-gratulate all the students who further their music education with attending les-sons and summer camps. The Symphonic Mixed Choir had a wonderful trip to Virginia from April 19‐21. On Thursday, they performed at a church in the Shenandoah  Valley, and were given a home‐cooked meal by the Strasburg Methodist Church. On Friday they traveled to Roanoke College and were given a clinic/workshop by their director, Dr. Jeffrey Sandborg. He raved about their professional choral presentation. After that, they traveled to  Williamsburg, VA. During the day on Saturday, they were treated to a guided tour of Colonial Williamsburg, with a special presentation at the House of Burgesses, where they reenacted Patrick Henryʹs speech to  become independent from Great Britain (yes, it happened in  Williamsburg before Philadelphia). Saturday evening was magical. The choir performed in Bruton Parish, the original Anglican Church, which was renovated by JD Rockefeller. Bruton Parish has a concert series called ʺThe Candlelight Concert Series.ʺ The church was completely packed, as that is what tourists do for their Saturday entertainment. The choir performed beautifully. They received a standing ovation. Audience members came up to the choir to thank them for their music. Some  people had tears in their eyes. It was emotional for us, as well. The  students were exceptional all during the trip, both in their music and in their presentation as Lakewood High School students and ambassadors of the Lakewood community.

In past years, course request verifications were mailed home so students and parents could review course selections for the next school year. This will not be done this year since staffing and the master schedule are still being finalized. Students and/or parents are welcome to check with their guidance counselor to review selections. Students need to finalize their choices for electives and rigor of class by the end of the school year.

Changes will be made in August only if a scheduling correction is needed. All college-bound seniors need to let Mrs. Diamond know which college they will be attending so their final transcript can be sent there. There is no charge for this service. Congratulations to the Class of 2012!

Interactive Media student and senior Lizzy Taucher won the American Visions Medal for her animated video. Taucher will accept her award at Carnegie Hall in New York City in June. Taucher was one of three Lakewood High students who were also honored with a top regional award - Gold Key Winner - in the Cuyahoga County. Each year more than 77,000 students in grades 7-12 participate in the Scholastic competition. The process begins across the country as young artist and writers submit more than 100,000 creative works of art and writing in 28 categories to a network of regional affiliates that locally present the awards. Panelists of experts in their field look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
