“…this is the time in history where we have a chance to move from the old Tayloristic and cartel like labor market model to the real empowerment of skills and individuals…”

Sven Otto Littorin

Some Major disrupting TRENDS (above the economic trends like recession,

inequalities, etc.)

1. A continuous exponential and combined development of new technologies

2. A collaborative / sharing economy

3. A society where everyone is an asset

Page 10: Randstad Labour Market Seminar: Presentation: "The World of Work at a time of disruptions" - D. Turcq

New technologies >>> new skills, new jobs, new attitudes, new trainings, etc. i.e. a new ecosystem of work

Page 11: Randstad Labour Market Seminar: Presentation: "The World of Work at a time of disruptions" - D. Turcq

Sharing economy, the combination of three major forces, changes the economic/social dynamics

11

Technology (Apps)

Sociology (sharing, changing

intermediaries)

Economy, innovating, exploiting

opportunities

Sharing Economy: from UBER to AirBnB to Gig

work, etc. • More service for users • Illusion of freedom • Closely linked to the

Web2.0 culture

BUT/ AND • Many « sharing

economy companies » are actually staffing companies

• Additional capacities • Lower prices • Less controls

Page 12: Randstad Labour Market Seminar: Presentation: "The World of Work at a time of disruptions" - D. Turcq

The portfolio of the person as an “asset”

Technical skills and experience (CV)

Social skills

New software/ apps fluency skills

Collaboration skills

Profile management skills

Networking skills and

« guild » skills

Interfacing with machines skills

Follower motivating skills and new management skills

The « new face » of the labor market

• Still far from « perfect » but transparency increasing by the day

• Many jobs to be created, many to disappear, most to change nature: the mismatch is the core issue of the next decades

• New intermediation required for : – Jobs – Tasks – Missions – Personal Development – Team construction – Personal portfolio management – All mobility : Geographic, skills, industry

Page 19: Randstad Labour Market Seminar: Presentation: "The World of Work at a time of disruptions" - D. Turcq

LinkedIn as an example of the next disruption on the labor market intermediation

The LinkedIn current hand on the labor market: • Half the professionals of the world (350 millions out of 700 millions) • Next aim: the 3,5 billion working population • A “fabulous” database on jobs, skills, locations, costs, etc.

• Services planned:

– Economic graph – Portfolio profile – Skill cards – Universal job market board – Skill switching journey – MOOCs selection assistance

LINKEDIN AS A SERVICE ? : • Directory • Chat • Recommandation • Evaluation • Career counselor • Development advisor • etc. 19

Agency Work can be a major player in this new world

• It promotes an ecosystem of work respecting the notion of decent work

• But it has to find its new place within the new ecosystem of work intermediation

Page 21: Randstad Labour Market Seminar: Presentation: "The World of Work at a time of disruptions" - D. Turcq

Agency Work will have to rely on its differentiating competitive advantages

toward all stakeholders • Developing the Sense of service

– To all stakeholders around the new needs for safety, security and flexibility, for all nature of work engagements

– Relying on all elements of its ecosystem values (from health to loan to validation of skills, etc. )

• Relying on Human hi touch – The value of physical branches as new « locations » – The human touch of consultants/agents – But also developing the best technology of interactions

• Putting Skills and development at the center – Helping / coaching for development – Be proactive in all mobilities

A final word TO J.M. Keynes

Page 23: Randstad Labour Market Seminar: Presentation: "The World of Work at a time of disruptions" - D. Turcq

Let’s not do the J. M. Keynes mistake again

• Good: we will be 8 times richer : On target !

• Bad: 15 hours a week. Keynes missed the mark because he neglected:

– The new jobs needed

– Sharing work is not natural

– Skills mismatch creates disparities in the distribution of work 23
