The first thing you will notice is we have moved the sale back a

month to April 23. After hitting 3 blizzards in a row in March we hope

April will give us better weather.

35 years ago when I went to the U of S the first lesson in

economics 101 was supply and demand. If there is less supply of a

commodity the demand is greater and the price goes up. The more

the supply the less the demand and the price softens. This certainly

applies to the cattle business today. The cow numbers are way down

so the demand for the tight supply of feeder cattle and cull cows and

bulls is giving us ranchers some great prices. My neighbor sold his

800 lb steer calves in mid Feb and netted close to $1200( needless

to say we had a few drinks after the sale). Further good news is unlike

the pigs and chickens we can’t increase our cow numbers over night

so it looks like these good prices are here for a while.

Bill Dillabaugh went through the bulls. He told me they may be

the best set of bulls we have raised. I know they are as a consistent

set as we have ever offered. They are athletic, strong bulls that will

put extra pounds on your calves.

Angus cattle and grain farming have been very good to me. I

can’t think of a better environment to raise a family. Son Ryan and

nephew Lindsay continue to take on bigger roles on the farm. My 3

girls are all married to successful men in the oil business. Susan’s

daughter Taylor is in 1st year collage on her way to a nursing degree.

With 11 grandkids our life is never dull!!!

Caring For Yearling BullsThere are so many theories on how cattle should perform,

some sound, some not so sound. The Holstein cow is veryefficient in converting feed into milk and this may be done bythe Holstein in a controlled environment. This enables thedairyman to produce a very inexpensive product.

The consumer is demanding lean, tasty, tender beef at aninexpensive price. How do we produce this? That is thequestion! Tender meat comes from young animals. So we haveto have fast growing animals that can grade and weigh 1,250to 1,350 pounds at 13 to 14 months of age.

The bulls that sire carcasses like this need to have explosivegrowth and fleshing abilities. They also have high metabolismso they may utilize and convert feed when exposed to it. As aresult these young bulls are still growing fast at 13 to 14months old when they are turned out to breed. They cannotget enough feed to maintain their growth and muscle mass andbreed cows at the same time. Something has to give. Theseyoung bulls will not stop breeding, and likely their skeletongrowth will not stop. It then means something else needs togive. The result is quite often a rapid drop in condition of theyearling bull.

A slower growing bull can maintain himself better, but hisoffspring will not convert feed well and they will reach marketat a later date, possibly adding a little to the toughness of themeat. There can be a fine line in these genetics and we mustguard against hard doing animals. However, after breedingseason the majority of these good young bulls should be puton good feed and are then able to convert feed and rapidlyregain their body mass. If they can do this it is an indicationthat they are easy doing cattle.

When the breeding season is completed these good yearlingbulls that have good feed conversion and growth rates mustbe exposed to feed that compliments their rapid rate of gainto get their body mass in acceptable condition for winter.

This is why these young bulls should not have to compete atthe feed bunk with older herd bulls. If you feed all the bulls withenough energy and protein for these young bulls, then the oldbulls may become too fat by spring, particularly if the olderbulls are easy converters. As a two-year-old the growth curvehas leveled out and the bull is more able to look after his bodyneeds.

The best feed for yearling bulls is a high quality hay and 1.5per cent of his body weight for a balanced grain or pellet ration.That is a 1,450 pound bull needs to be exposed to free choice,high quality hay and approximately 15 to 20 pounds of abalanced ration.

A young bull looked after in his first year could possibly giveone or two more years as a breeding bull and that would makethose few extra dollars to feed him properly look pretty cheap.

I don’t know much, but what I do know I learned from beingin the cattle business for 30 years. Things I learned you can’tdo: starve a profit into your cattle through poor feed, poor careor weak genetics. You can’t just hope to top the market if yourcow herd is a mismatch of all different types of cattle. The goodthing is you are in control of the care and the genetics that gointo your cattle.

I was at the auction market the other day. It was veryinteresting. I will tell you what I saw and how it relates to yourranch. Some of this is preaching to the converted. Being in thecattle business is a business so besides raising cattle we mightas well get all the money we can out of it. This is what I saw:

- top cull cows sold for $.82/lb- common cows sold between $.51/lb and $.74/lb

averaging $.65/lb- difference between top culls and average culls was

$.17/lb x 1,350 lbs = $299.50 - top cull bulls sold for $1.02/lb- average cull bull sold for $.82/lb;- difference of $.20/lb x 2,300 lbs = $460.00- top quality 500 lb steer calves sold for $2.02- average 500 lb sold for $1.82 to $1.85 with off types

selling as low as $1.50; average of 500 lb steers$1.85

- difference between good of $2.02 -$1.85 = $.17 x500 lbs = $85.00

The different weights all played out the same with goodquality cattle bringing a premium on all weights. The differencein price of the quality cattle was a lot bigger spread on thismarket than on a down market. This tells us ranchers what agood bull is worth. If you keep him 4 years you may have 20 ofhis daughters retained so 20 x $299 = $5,980 more when youcull those cows. You will get $460 more when you cull him. Youshould sell 30 of his calves/year x 4 years = 120 calves x $85more for top quality = $10,200. You can play with thesenumbers but it gives you an idea the difference a quality bullcan make. The numbers add up to $16,640. That is what themarket told me on Feb.15/2012.

What is Bill doing? I’m feeling good. Kim is renting mypasture and I have a few cows in partnership at Matt Fleury’s.I am helping Matt and Kim marketing their cattle and getting intheir way when there is any work to do. I have an interest insome herd bulls at both places. I really miss having the corralsfull of little black calves this time of year so I go to Matt or Kim’sto get my cow fix and still be part of this great cattle business.

If you want to top the market take some time and visit these2 great cow herds. You will find cows with the strength toproduce top bulls. If you like the cows just keep buying theirbulls so your cows will soon look like theirs and will give youcalves that will “top the market”.

I always said there are 3 things a seedstock producer needsto be successful:

1) you must have good cattle2) you must know how to feed the cattle to take

advantage of the genetics 3) you must be a people person

In my opinion Matt and Kim have all these qualities. I havebeen partners with Kim for over 30 years.

The last thing I will say is Marlene and I had a great holidayin Mexico this winter.

Terms and Conditions

CATTLE INSPECTION - All sale cattle will carry identity tags correspondingto sale lot and/or tag numbers shown in the catalogue, and will be availablefor inspection at sale facility commencing the day before the sale.

ALL CATTLE SELL - Every animal entering the sales ring will be sold to thehighest bidder, subject to such health tests as may be required under regula-tions of Agriculture Canada.

ANNOUNCEMENTS - Errors discovered in the catalogue will be corrected byannouncements from the auction block at sale time, and such corrections shalltake precedence over the printed matter in this catalogue.

BREEDING GUARANTEE - All cattle are sold as sound and right and sell witha responsible breeders guarantee of satisfaction. In the unlikely event of a dis-pute, the regular Breeder's Guarantee, standard with the Canadian Angus As-sociation, shall apply.

DNA TESTING - The Canadian Angus Association now requires that any sireof a calf to be registered with the CAA must be DNA tested. Rancher's Choicesale bulls have not been DNA tested. Therefore, it is the buyer's responsibilityto make certain that any bull used on registered females, from which the off-spring are to be registered, is DNA tested before going into service.

DELIVERY - Bulls will be delivered to central points within a three hundredmile radius on a $2,500.00 purchase or more. We are again asking our cus-tomers to please bring their trailers and help us. It's not that we will not deliverbut it's physically impossible to get these bulls out in the short time frame wehave to work with.

SEMEN - Rancher's Choice reserves the right to collect 100 units of semen atRancher's Choice expense and buyers convenience (including A.I. certificates)on any bull in the sale. Such semen for within herd use only.

MAIL BIDS - Orders for the purchase of sale cattle may be entrusted in com-plete confidence to any of the sale staff.

RISK - Ownership risk to the purchaser commences when the auctioneer'shammer falls. Insurance is recommended. Hartford Insurance will be appliedfor delivery purposes.

BULL WARRANTY - We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bullcapable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bullis a non-satisfactory breeder the seller will not, under any circumstances, beresponsible for more than the original selling price of any bull or female soldin the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for physicalinjury or mismanagement. Therefore we stress the importance of insurance onyour bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day.

TERMS OF SALE - Terms are cash or cheque. No sale entries will be releaseduntil satisfactory settlement has been made. Animals for export may not bereleased unless payment has been received prior to departure. Registrationpapers will be supplied upon completion of sale transaction , including pay-ment in full.

ACCIDENTS - ALTHOUGH ALL REASONABLE PRECAUTIONS WILL BETAKEN TO PROTECT SAFETY AND COMFORT OF PEOPLE ATTENDING THESALE, ALL PERSONS ATTENDING THE SALE DO SO AT THEIR OWN RISK,AND THE OWNERS, MANAGEMENT AND SALES STAFF ASSUME NO LIA-BILITY, LEGAL OR OTHERWISE, FOR PERSONAL OR PROPERTY LOSS ORLOSSES FROM ANY ACCIDENT OR OTHER OCCURRENCE WHICH MAYOCCUR.
