SMART DWELLING - AN EFFICIENT Digital Living

OBJECTIVE

In other words.., its

•IS there any intelligent system?•How much are they intelligent?

In order to answer whether there is any intelligence in intelligent systems and how much intelligence do they have, if they do have some, we need to build an evaluation system to evaluate intelligent level of intelligent systems.

Home – As an Application

• Home Automation and Monitoring ( NILM )

• Home Networking ( DLNA )

• Smart Energy Management ( using both )

Page 4: Ramanan smart

NILM _a definition

NON _ INTRUSIVE LOAD MONITORING

• can detect what types of appliances people have

• their behavioral patterns :: routine times that nobody is at home/ everybody is at home

or :: embarrassing behavior

or even :: illegal behavior of residents

Page 5: Ramanan smart

NILM - Why?

• Our increase in consumption is neither economically nor environmentally sustainable

• Residential homes consume about 34% of the total power consumption { Wikipedia's information }

• Ultimately, this means higher prices

• and Environmentally this means producing more supply using unclean sources (e.g. coal)

Page 6: Ramanan smart

NILM

-Discriminating Demand and Consumption

• Demand – Needed • Consumption – result of demand• Water analogy:

Page 7: Ramanan smart

NILM - What ?

• What loads are running ?

• When they are running ?

Informed choices that can lead to a reduction in power consumption

• How much power they consume.. ??

Gives us a time vs energy consumption relationship.

NILM VS SUB-METERING

• NILM METERING • SUB-METERING

• CENTRALIZED

• COST EFFECTIVE

• User has more knowledge about his/her consumption

• USES MULTIPLE METERS

• As many meters have to be installed more COSTLY.

• User is unaware of his advances in consumption of electricity

Page 10: Ramanan smart

DLNA- Digital Living Network Alliance

• A nonprofit collaborative trade organization established by Sony

• PC-like organization for tech in the home

• Users interact with DLNA, not individual devices

• New classes of devices and apps arrive frequently with DLNA certification

• Logically centralizes all devices

In A WORD : it’s a HOME OS

Page 11: Ramanan smart

Approach

and the Idea

• Use of NILM by usefulness is to verify specific device-level performance• An energy management system can perform device-specific demand response to the total power supply

In A WORD : it’s a HOME OS

NILM

DLNAWhat if they join hands .?

•DLNA certified energy meters are the first target• Since NILM disaggregates Loads, and DLNA concepts for individual devices, they shouldnot be difficult to interface

OK.. SO,

What would be the OUTCOME..??

AIM : An average estimate & typical comparisonTwo services - A self scoring tool Categorized service reportSelf Scoring Tool – Enables self estimation of a device in particular.Categorized service report – Customized information over a period of time.

Page 13: Ramanan smart

OK.. SO,

What would be the OUTCOME..??

•Turn off devices that are not in use • Modulate lighting based on daylight

• Enable appliance scheduling • Prefix your bill budgets and use your power efficiently

Page 14: Ramanan smart

•Recognize Maintenance Needs

• Provide Early Notification of Problems • Predicting Equipment Failure

• Reduce Service Call Time and Cost

Page 15: Ramanan smart

Do they not exist already.?

• Turning your light ON / OFF depending on the daylight

• Can it still predict the climate with it.?• If it does, can it inform you, when you are not at home.?• Can it regulate your fridge’s temperature with it.?• Can you get your AC turned on before you enter your house from a hot sun..?

Though you have it individually, merging DLNA & NILM could be a changeover integrated method

Page 16: Ramanan smart

As a Prodigy – In future

• Readily measured energy consumption in a laboratory, does not necessarily indicate the energy consumption of the appliance in typical use

• This idea is even extended deep into the appliances level, to know what devices are on load in that particular appliance

• Smart energy management, if do not bring out a significant change in energy efficiency in the individual level, it would be a turn around at a nation level

Gap Between Potential and Practicality

Extensibility Management pain

or

Adding devices and tasks Access control

• Highly potential but immensely complex

• To Interoperate between various devices, all of them should be DLNA certified

Page 18: Ramanan smart

Possibility

• It is possible.• If a finger can throw a picture, from a smart phone to TV..,

Devices made compatible with each other make them compatible with your life too.
