Key for Translation between NCS and RAL

The RAL coloursThe RAL colours are a German colour chart, which are used primarily as colour standards in the German industry. The RAL colours are available in a colour register with matt or glossy colour samples and in small overview colour cards.

The RAL colours are a number of non-systematically chosen colour samples which are divided into nine colour groups: yellow, orange, red, violet, blue, green, grey, brown and white/aluminium/black.

In the four-digit RAL code, the first digit indicates to which of the nine colour groups the colour belongs. The remaining digits are merely a serial number, which indicates nothing about the appearance of the colour.

NCSNCS - Natural Color System®© is a system with the help of which all conceivable surface colours (not fluorescent or metallic colours) can be described. That facilitates and guarantees exact colour navigation in design, communication and production. The NCS system is illustrated by a Colour Atlas containing 1950 colour samples. Today, the NCS is one of the most widely used colour-describing systems in the world and has acquired international scientific acknowledgement. Besides, it is a Swedish, Norwegian, Spanish and South African national standard. NCS colour samples hold world-leading colour quality to provide exact colour match between different productions of colour samples, in order to make sure that the colour is always the same.

This translation key is based on the NCS Edition 2. The letter S preceding the complete NCS notation (NCS S 1050-Y90R) means that the NCS sample is a standardised NCS Colour Sample issued by the Scandinavian Colour Institute, NCS Quality Centre, and that it follows the NCS Quality Management system according to the Edition 2.

The variables in the NCS notations are built entirely on visually observable properties of the colours. In the NCS notation for a pink colour S 1040-R20B the first two digits indicate the percentage of visual blackness in the colour. The next two digits indicate the colour’s chromaticness, i.e. how strong the colour is. The letter-number combination after the hyphen indicates the colour’s hue, i.e. which chromatic attributes are included and the relation between these. In this case, it is a red hue with 20% blueness.

The NCS can also be illustrated graphically in a three-dimensional model, where the blackness and chromaticness are given in an equilateral triangle and the hue on a circle. A point in the triangle and a line on the circumference of the circle provide an unequivocal description of a colour. The pink colour S 1040-R20B is marked in the triangle and in the circle below. Translation KeyNCS notations are given for RAL colours in the RAL K-7 colour chart. This colour sample collection contains all RAL colours of the colour register, which can be found as a matt (840HR) or a glossy (841GL) version. It also contains all colours in the colour sample collections: the ”RAL-F14 Kennfarben” and the ”RAL-F81 Farben im Straßenverkehr”.

There could be great differences in the translation from RAL to NCS if you use the glossy or the matt version of a colour sample. The same RAL sample in glossy or matt version can result in different NCS notations, (differences up to 2∆E(CMC 1:1) are measured). There are also metameric effects between different RAL colour samples of the same colour. The colours for which no translation is given have a fluorescent or metallic surface.

In the table the exact NCS notations (measured according to Swedish Standard SS 01 91 00), the nearest NCS colour sample (by visual estimation) and the colour difference in ∆E(CMC 1:1) for each RAL colour are given.

For translation from an NCS colour to a RAL colour, the 41 NCS Colour Triangles (one for neutral colours and one for each hue) can be used. The NCS standard colours are marked with white dots in the triangles, and in each triangle both the positions of the NCS standard colours and the RAL colours are illustrated graphically.

Die RAL-FarbenDie RAL-Farben sind eine deutsche Farbmustersammlung, die überwiegend in der deutschen Industrie als Vergleichs-basis angewendet wird. Die RAL-Farben sind als Farbregister mit matten und glänzenden Farbmustern und als kleinere Übersichtskarten erhältlich.

Unter RAL-Farben versteht man eine Anzahl nicht systematisch ausgewählter Farbmuster. Sie sind auf die neun Farbgruppen Gelb, Orange, Rot, Lila/Violett, Blau, Grün, Grau, Braun und Weiß/Aluminium/Schwarz verteilt.

In der vierstelligen RAL-Bezeichnung kennzeichnet die erste Ziffer jene Farbgruppe, welcher die Farbe angehört; die übrigen Stellen sind nur fortlaufende Nummern, die keine Angabe über das Aussehen der betreffenden Farbe machen.

NCSNCS - Natural Color System®© ist ein System, mit dem man alle denkbaren Oberflächenfarben beschreiben kann (mit Ausnahme von fluoreszierenden und metallischen Farben). Dies erleichtert und garantiert genaueste Farbnavigation vom Design über die Kommunikation bis zur Produktion. Das System wird durch einen Farbatlas mit 1950 Farben illustriert. NCS ist heute weltweit das am meisten angewendete farbbeschreibende System und hat international die Anerkennung der Wissenschaft erworben. Außerdem ist NCS nationale Norm in Schweden, Norwegen, Spanien und Südafrika. Dank genauester Farbabstimmung zwischen den einzelnen Produktionen garantieren NCS Farbmuster weltweit führende Farbqualität, was sicher stellt dass die Farbmuster immer gleich ausfallen.

Der vorliegende Schlüssel basiert auf der NCS Edition 2. Der Buchstabe „S” vor der kompletten NCS Bezeichnung (NCS „S” 1050-Y90R) bedeutet, dass dieses Farbmuster ein standardisiertes NCS Farbmuster ist, welches vom NCS Quality Centre des Skandinavischen Farbinstituts herausgegeben wurde. Es entspricht den Vorgaben des NCS Quality Management Systems für die 2. Edition.

Die Codierung von NCS beruht voll und ganz auf den visuell wahrnehmbaren Eigenschaften der Farben. In der Bezeichnung NCS S 1040-R20B (rosa) stehen die ersten zwei Ziffern für den visuellen Schwarzanteil in Prozent ausgedrückt. Die folgenden zwei Ziffern geben den Buntanteil der Farbe an, d.h. wie stark sie ist. Die Buchstaben-Ziffernkombination nach dem Bindestrich bezeichnet den Buntton der Farbe, mit anderen Worten ihre zwei bunten Eigenschaften und deren Verhältnis. Im vorliegenden Beispiel handelt es sich um einen rotenBuntton mit 20% Blauanteil.

Im NCS-System kann eine Farbe auch mit Hilfe eines geometrischen Modells graphisch dargestellt werden, nämlich der Schwarz- und der Buntanteil in einem gleichseitigen Dreieck und der Buntton auf einem Kreis. Ein Punkt im Dreieck und ein Strich auf dem Kreis stellen die eindeutige Definition einer bestimmten Farbe dar.

Übersetzungs-Schlüssel zwischen NCS und RAL

Übersetzungs-Schlüssel In diesem Schlüssel werden NCS-Bezeichnungen für 189 der 194 RAL-Farben der RAL K-7 Farbmustersammlung gegeben. Diese Farbmustersammlung beinhaltet alle RAL-Farben des RAL-Farbregisters, welches es als matte (840 HR) oder glänzende (841 GL) Version gibt. Desweiteren beinhaltet die K-7 Farbmustersammlung die Farben des RAL-F14 ”Kennfarben”-Blocks und des RAL-F81 ”Farben im Straßenverkehr”-Blocks.

Bei der Übersetzung von RAL-Farben in das NCS-System können große Unterschiede auftreten, da das gleiche RAL- Farbmuster in der matten und der glänzenden Version große Differenzen ergibt (bis zu 2∆E(CMC 1:1)). Es wurden ebenfalls metamerische Effekte festgestellt. Die nicht enthaltenen RAL-Farben sind fluoreszierend oder metallisch und können deshalb nicht genau nach NCS gekennzeichnet werden.

In der Tabelle werden für jede RAL-Farbe die exakte NCS-Bezeichnung (instrumentell gemessen nach der Schwe-dischen Norm SS 01 91 00), die nächstliegende NCS-Farbe (überprüft durch visuelle Beurteilung) und die Farb-unterschiede in ∆E(CMC 1:1) angegeben. Für die Übersetzung einer RAL-Farbe in eine NCS-Farbe können die 41 NCS-Farbdreiecke (eines für neutrale Farben und eines fürjeden Buntton) genutzt werden. Die NCS Standard Farben werden mit in den Dreiecken mit weißen Punkten angegeben und in jedem der Dreiecke wird sowohl die Position der RAL-Farben als auch die der NCS-Standardfarbtöne graphisch dargestellt.

Les couleurs RALLes couleurs RAL constituent une collection d’échantillons de couleurs semi-officielle d’origine allemande, utilisée comme base de référence dans l’industrie allemande. Les couleurs RAL peuvent être obtenues sous forme de fichiers-couleurs à échantillons de couleurs demi-mats ou de petites cartes synoptiques.

Par le terme de couleurs RAL, on désigne un ensemble d’échantillons de couleurs sélectionnés de façon non systématique. Ils sont répartis sur les neuf groupes de couleurs jaune, orange, rouge, lilas/violet, bleu, vert, gris, brun et blanc/aluminium/noir.

Le premier des quatre chiffres qui constituent la notation RAL désigne le groupe de couleurs auquel appartient la couleur concernée; les autres chiffres ne sont que des numéros qui n’apprennent rien sur l’apparence de la couleur en question.

NCSLe NCS - Natural Color System®© est un système permettant de décrire et de noter toutes les couleurs de surface imaginables (à l’exception des couleurs fluorescentes et métallisées). La garantie d’une recherche précise des couleurs en toute facilité à des fins de conception, de communication et de production. Le système est illustré par un Atlas des couleurs contenant 1950 couleurs. Aujourd’hui, le NCS est l’un des systèmes de description des couleurs les plus couramment utilisés dans le monde et jouit d’une reconnaissance scientifique internationale. Il constitue en outre la norme de référence en Suède, Norvège, l’Espagne et l’Afrique du Sud. Les échantillons de couleurs NCS ont la meilleure qualité dans le monde entier et peuvent s’utiliser pour établir la correspondance exacte de couleur entre différentes productions d’échantillons de couleur.

Cette clé de concordance est basée sur NCS Edition 2. Le préfixe « S » de la notation NCS indique que l’échantillon est une couleur NCS standard diffusée par l’Institut Scandinave de la Couleur, le Centre de Qualité NCS, et qu’il est conforme au système « NCS Quality Management » appliqué à l’Edition 2.

La codification du NCS se base entièrement sur les caractéristiques visuellement perceptibles des couleurs. Dans la notation S 1040-R20B pour une couleur rose (par exemple), les deux premiers chiffres indiquent en pour cent la teneur visuelle en noir. Les deux chiffres suivants indiquent la teneur chromatique de la couleur, la combinaison lettres-chiffres après le trait d’union représent la tonalité de la couleur, c’est-à-dire ses deux propriétés chromatiques et le rapport de celle-ci entre elles. En ce qui concerne l’exemple présent, il s’agit d’une tonalité rouge à teneur en bleu de 20%.

Le système NCS peut également se présenter graphique-ment sous la forme d’un modèle tridimensionnel: la teneur en noir et la teneur chromatique se situent dans un triangle équilatéral et la tonalité dans un cercle.

Clé de concordance entre NCS et RAL

Clé de concordanceLes notations NCS pour les couleurs RAL du carte RAL K-7 (RAL 1994) ont été déterminées. Cette collection d’échantillons de couleurs contient toutes les couleurs figurant dans les fichiers de couleurs RAL 840 HR (mats) et RAL 841 GL (haut brilliants). Le RAL K-7 contient également toutes les couleurs figurant dans les cartes de couleurs de RAL-F14 ”Couleurs conventionelles” et de RAL-F81 ”Couleurs dans la circulation routière”.

Des différences peuvent se produire dans les concor-dances entre RAL et NCS si l’on utilise des échantillons brillants ou mats. Un même échantillon RAL, brillant ou mat, peut se traduire par différentes notations NCS (des différences allant jusqu’à 2 ∆E(CMC 1:1) ont été relevées). Il existe également une certaine métamérie entre différents échantillons de couleurs RAL de la même couleur. Pour les échantillons de couleurs RAL fluorescentes ou métalliques, aucune concordance n’est indiquée.

Dans le tableau est indiquée, pour chaque échantillon de couleur RAL, la notation NCS exacte (mesuré selon la norme suédoise SS 01 91 00), l’échantillon de couleur NCS standard le plus proche (détermination visuelle) et sa différence de couleur par rapport à l’échantillon de couleur RAL dans ∆E(CMC 1:1).

Les 41 triangles de couleurs NCS (un pour les tons neutres et un pour chaque tonalité chromatique) permettent d’établir la correspondance d’une couleur NCS dans le système RAL. Les couleurs NCS standard sont indiquées par des points blancs dans les triangles et, dans chacun d’eux, les positions des couleurs NCS standard et des couleurs RAL sont représentées graphiquement.

Översättningsnyckel mellan NCS och RAL

RAL-färgernaRAL-färgerna är en tysk färgprovsamling, som främst används som färglikare inom den tyska industrin. RAL-färgerna finns tillgängliga i färgregister med halvmatta eller blanka färgprover och i mindre översiktsfärgkartor.

RAL-färgerna är ett antal ej systematiskt utvalda färg-prover. Färgproverna är fördelade i de nio färggrupperna gult, orange, rött, violett, blått, grönt, grått, brunt och vitt/ aluminium/svart.

I den 4-siffriga RAL-koden anger den första siffran i vilken av de nio färggrupperna färgen ingår. De övriga siffrorna är bara ett löpnummer, som inte anger något om färgens utseende.

NCSNCS - Natural Color System®© är ett system med vars hjälp man kan beskriva och beteckna alla tänkbara ytfärger som människan kan se (ej fluorescerande och metalliska färger). Detta underlättar och säkerställer exakt färgnavigering i design, kommunikation och produktion. NCS-systemet illustreras av en Färgatlas med 1950 färgprover. NCS är idag det mest använda färgbeskrivande systemet i världen och har vunnit internationellt vetenskapligt erkännande och är dessutom svensk, norsk, spansk och sydafrikansk nationell standard. NCS Färgprover håller världsledande kulörkvalitet för att kunna erbjuda exakt färgöverensstämmelse mellan olika produktioner av färgprover, detta för att säkerställa att färgen alltid är densamma.

Denna översättningsnyckel är baserad på NCS Edition 2. Bokstaven S i den fullständiga NCS-beteckningen (NCS S 1050-Y90R) betyder att färgprovet är ett standardiserat NCS färgprov framtaget av Skandinaviska Färginstitutet, NCS Quality Centre, och att det följer NCS Quality Management systemet i enlighet med Edition 2.

Variablerna i NCS bygger helt på visuellt iakttagbara egenskaper hos färger. I beteckningen för en rosa färg NCS S 1040-R20B visar det första sifferparet färgens visuella svarthet i procent. De två följande siffrorna anger färgens kulörthet, dvs. hur stark färgen är. Bokstavs-sifferkombinationen efter bindestrecket betyder färgens kulörton, dvs vilka kulörta egenskaper som ingår och förhållandet mellan dessa. I detta fall är det en röd kulörton med 20% blåhet.

NCS kan även illustreras grafiskt i en 3-dimensionell modell, där svartheten och kulörtheten anges i en liksidig triangel och kulörtonen i en cirkel. ÖversättningsnyckelNCS färgbeteckningar för färgproverna i RAL K 7 har bestämts. Denna färgprovsamling innehåller alla kulörer som finns i färgregistren RAL 840HR (matta) och i RAL 841GL (högglans). RAL K 7 innehåller även alla kulörer i färgkartorna RAL-F14 Kennfarben och RAL-F81 Farben im Straßenverkehr.

Skillnader mellan RAL till NCS översättningar kan uppstå om man använder både blanka och matta RAL-färgprover eftersom samma RAL-färgprov i blankt och matt kan ge upphov till olika NCS-beteckningar, (differenser på upp till 2 ∆E(CMC 1:1)har uppmätts). Det förekommer även viss metameri mellan olika RAL-färgprover av samma kulör. För fluorescerande eller metalliska RAL-färgprover anges ingen översättning.

I tabellen anges för varje RAL-färgprov den exakta NCS-beteckningen (mätningar enl. Svensk Standard SS 19102:2004), närmaste NCS standardfärgprov (visuellt kontrollerat) och dess färgdifferens mot RAL-färgprovet i ∆E(CMC 1:1).

För översättning från en NCS-färg till en RAL-färg kan de 41 NCS Färgtrianglarna (en för de neutrala samt en för varje kulörton) användas. NCS standardfärger är markerade med vita punkter i trianglarna, i varje triangel har både NCS standardfärgprovers och RAL-färgprovernas lägen markerats.

Colour AccuracyIgnorance about colour, lack of better solutions, and inferior, printed colour sample collections, all combine to turn the choice and control of colour into a costly venture. Being far from consistent, samples from other systems such as CMYK, RGB or printed colour collections, vary a great deal from one print to the next. This is why suppliers recommend they be renewed every year. As this almost never happens, the loss in marketing value and the cost for customer claims are enormous.

High colour accuracy is essential if we desire a perfect colour appearance in the final product - the colour appearance our customers expect. How to Recognize Quality and Colour AccuracyThe visual appearance, i.e. how the colour looks to the eye, is the most important way to judge colour. However, industry often uses measured colour values, received from a spectrophotometer, to control the colour of the standard and the match.

The instrumental values are calculated into a ∆E (Delta E) value. ”E” is supposed to indicate the composite picture of the total colour difference (summation of the differences in lightness, chroma and hue). Ideally, the ∆E is a perceptual indication of the size of the visual colour difference between two colours. It is the best means of technical assessment known today.

The Delta E scale starts at 0, where ∆E=0 stands for no perceived difference at all. At ∆E=0,3 the difference starts to be visible. In most printed sample collections only 20 % of the colour samples attain ∆E=2, the remaining 80% is even worse, ∆E=2-20. NCS has managed to diminish the unacceptable colour variations of the past, reaching almost zero, ∆E=0,3. Thanks to the NCS Quality Management colour tolerances are steadily being reduced. Do not forget, the human eye is still the most effective way to evaluate the visual appearance of a colour.

Les valeurs instrumentales sont calculées en une valeur ∆E (Delta E). « E » est censé d’indiquer l’image composite de la différence totale de couleur (total des différences de clarté, de chromaticité et de tonalité). Dans l’idéal, ∆E est une indication perceptrice de la grandeur de la différence de couleur visuelle entre deux couleurs. C’est le meilleur moyen d’évaluation technique connu de nos jours.

La valeur la plus basse de l’échelle Delta E est 0. ∆E=0 correspond à aucune différence perçue. La différence commence à être visible à ∆E=0,3. Dans la plupart des collections d’échantillons imprimées, seulement 20% des échantillons de couleurs atteignent ∆E=2. Les 80% restant sont encore pires, ∆E=2-20. NCS est parvenu à diminuer les variations de couleur inacceptables du passé, pour atteindre une valeur proche de zéro, ∆E=0,3. Grâce à la Gestion de Qualité NCS, les tolérances de couleur sont réduites de façon notable. N’oubliez pas que l’œil humain est encore la manière la plus efficace d’évaluer l’aspect visuel d’une couleur.

Die Skala für Delta E beginnt bei 0, wobei ∆E=0 für einen nicht feststellbaren Unterschied steht. Ab ∆E=0,3 wird der Unterschied erkennbar. Bei den meisten gedruckten Farbmuster-Kollektionen erreichen nur 20 % der Farbmuster ∆E=2, die restlichen 80 % sind mit ∆E=2-20 sogar noch schlechter. Dank NCS ist es möglich, die inakzeptablen Farbabweichungen der Vergangenheit fast komplett zu eliminieren und ∆E=0,3 zu erreichen. Mithilfe des NCS Quality Management werden Farbtoleranzen ständig weiter reduziert. Vergessen Sie nicht, dass sich die visuelle Erscheinung einer Farbe am effektivsten mit dem menschlichen Auge beurteilen lässt.
