9THRAKHALFMARATHONFASTERTHANEVER?

Thequestion,inthelastdaysbeforethisyearsRAKHalfMarathon,aftereightyearsofconsistentrecordbreakingandastonishinglyfasteliteracing,shouldperhapsnotbeWillitbeagoodday?,butHowgreatadaywillitbe?.Ofcoursefromthesuperbelitefield,flownintoblastaroundtheevenfasteradjustedcircuit,toeverystarterinthemassrace,whatconstitutesagreatday,isquitedifferent.Whetheraimingtogetround,setapersonalbest,orsimplycelebratethejoyofrunningonabright,sunnymorningbecauseitsthere,theRAKorganisersdoalltheycantoensuretheydeliveraqualityexperienceforeveryone.WhilethatambitionfromthehostsdoesntexcludetheEliteathletes,theunwaveringlysinglemindedfocusoftheFormula1racersfromAfrica,doesseparatethemfromthemajority;forthem,thisisajobandnothingbutaworldclasstime,usuallyfinishinginutterexhaustion,willsendthemhomehappy.MostsupereliteneverhaveandneverwillexperiencewhatmostRAKersdothesimplepleasureofamblingroundwithafriend,smilingattheFinish,worryfree,fatiguedbutrelaxedinspirit.Almosttoamanquietandunassumingoutofracingsilks,becauseoftherelativepovertyoftherurallifethevastmajorityareborninto,runningfastatRAKandotherworldclassraces,iscriticalformanyofthem,indeedlifechanging.Sowhydotheycomeandwhoaretheythisyear?WellfirstlybecauseatRAK,theyareassuredafasttime,andthatinturnbecomescurrencyforthecomingyear,orforsome,aboosttotheircomingMarathonchances.Andwiththenenhancedsuperfastcircuit,withperfectweathermoreorlessguaranteedandtheusualexcellentorganisation,RAKhasprovenahappyhuntinggroundyearafteryear.AndthatwordspreadsbackinthevillagesofKenyasRiftValleyandamongstthehugetraininggroupsofAddisAbaba,tothepointwherethisyearagain,trulyworldclassfieldswilllineupatthefrontforthenintheditioneventhoughliterallydozenshavebeenturnedaway.ThemensfavouriteisKenyasEliudKipchoge,whoatjust18,became5,000mworldchampionin2003.Almost12yearslater,heisaformidableroadracer,withthreewinsoutofhisfourmarathonstartsandahalfmarathonbestof59:25whichisdueforseriousrevision.Lastyear,onlyhissecondatthemarathon,hewontheprestigiousRotterdamandChicagomarathonsandthereislittledoubtthathisbestisyettobeseen.Foramansousedtowinninginfasttimes,aworldrecordisnotacompleteimpossibilityatRAK.AgainsthimwillbeafieldasstrongasanyseenatRAKbefore,includingothertopKenyanssuchasJonathanMaiyo(PB59:02),anotherofvastexperiencebutwhohasneverracedatRAKbefore;PeterKirui(59:22),anotherwithworldclasstimesfrom10,000mtoMarathon,whowonthePragueHalfMarathonlastyearbuthetoohasneverracedonsomethingas

fastasRAK;CyprianKotut(59:12)hasthebestrecentformwiththattimecominginNewDelhilastNovember;andDanielWanjiru(59:58)norelationtothe2007RAKChampion(andsadlydeceased)SammyWanjiruwhoisonly22buthasshownthecapacitytogomuchfaster.FortheEthiopians,MosinetGeremewisarealdanger,coming3rdinlastNovembersNewDelhiHalfin59:11.Throwin2014DubaiwinnerTsegayeMekonnen,andtherewillbeanunofficialKenyavEthiopiamatchoftitanicproportions.Onthewomenssidetoo,thereisanabundanceofrichesnomoresothaninthetinyfigureofMaryKeitany,thesecondfastesthalfmarathonrunnerinhistoryandoutstandingfavouritetotakeherthirdRAKtitle.Itwasin2011thatthis(now)motheroftwotorearoundtheRAKcircuittosetanewworldrecordof65:50retaininghertitlein2012(66:49).ShelaterfinishedfourthintheLondonOlympicMarathonwhenafewweekspregnant!Aftertaking2013out(forobviousreasons!),shereturnedtoracinglastyear,destroyingeveryoneshemetinherthreeraces,mostnotablywinningtheNewYorkMarathoninNovember.FacingthequietbutlionheartedKeitany,willbedefendingRAKchampionPriscahJeptoo,anotherabletoboastastonishingconsistency.Secondin2013(66:11),thesameyearshewontheLondonandnewYorkMarathons,shewonRAKlastyearin67:02byoveraminuteandwillnotrelinquishhercrownwithoutasteelybattle.AlsolookoutforlateentrantElvanAbeylegesseofTurkey,whowonRAK2010(67:07)andhasastunningarrayoffasttimesonthetrack(formerworldrecordat5,000m)andrightuptothemarathon.MixinEthiopianhalfmarathonrecordholderMeseretHailu(66:56),WorkneshDegefa(67:49)andtrackracerextraordinaireWudeAyalew(67:58),anditsclearthatforthewomentoo,thereisanunprecedenteddepthtotheclashofthetwosoproudEastAfricannations.Letbattlecommence!
