Ifeel immensely proud to acknowledge the teamat ARCH. The concerted efforts of the past havecome to fruition in terms of identity creation &

capacity building with an array of achievements overthe last few months.

I feel a sense of pride in congratulating the' Archdesign team' for having won the 'Jaipur Metro Uni-form Design' contest, making us the official Uniformdesigners to the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation Lim-ited , and thereafter going on to designing and deliv-ering the project to the JMRCL. There isn't a shadowof doubt that the 'Metro uniform Design' project isanother feather in our cap.

After our September visit to Perth College, UHI,Scotland, the ARCH team for the UKIERI project fi-nally got to welcome their team leader ChristianaMargiotti on a 7 day visit to our campus in October. Iam happy to say that the project is progressing verywell, and we are awaiting the 2nd visit from Chris-tiana in January 2014, when she will be accompa-nied by two Perth College students who will be partof the Student Exchange component of the projectfrom their side.

Our monthly event Chr-cha was also based on dis-cussions & exchange of views on the theme of thepossible role of Design Communication in the Cre-ative & Cultural Industries, which, as planned, gaveChristiana the opportunity to present the UKIERIproject intent, along with a glimpse of developmentsin the Scottish Creative Cultural Industries to thethinkers, creators & professionals gathered at theARCH campus for the get together over tea & snacks.The group interaction that followed through the roleplay of participants as Hoteliers, Craftsmen, Rick-shaw Pullers, Tour Operators, White Collar workersetc brought forth interesting observations, opinionsand suggestions on the topic.From the very positive feedback received, it seems tohave been an energising experience for all and I’mgrateful to them for setting aside their time to bepart of this informal forum and I am glad to invitethem to continue to participate & contribute in thisinitiative to bring together thinkers & creators fromvarious walks of life.

There are a few other happenings over the monthpast. I’ll leave you to discover them within thesepages.

Jewellery DesignEnamel : Enamel is glass fused by heat to a metalsurface. Our UKIERI project with PerthCollege, UHI, Scotland is pro-gressing very well. Christiana

Margiotti, leading the Perth team onthe project, visited ARCH at the end ofOctober. The seven day visit was suc-cessful in planning and taking furtherthe course of implementation of theDesign Communication project. Theitinerary included exposure to culturalheritage sites, and concentrated discus-sions over meetings arranged with ven-dors of services & ARCH teammembers.

Earlier, in September, when theARCH team had visited Perth for thestart of the implementation phase ofthe project, we had been taken aroundparts of Scotland to give us first handglimpses of the culture and the variousefforts of contributors to the Creative

& Cultural Industries of Scotland. (seeBackstitch October issue)

We in turn took her around Jaipur togive her an exposure to our heritage,culture, the crowds (!), problem areas,successes & failures of our communi-cation efforts etc. This experience, likeours in Scotland should definitely go along way to help understand the con-texts of our respective countries, whichis extremely important as research forplanning and building the detailed con-tents of our deliverables in the project.

Christiana also presented the projectas well as examples of Scottishprogress in the CCI of their country,through discussions over tea (Chr-Cha),with invited individuals representativein one way or the other of the IndianCreative & Cultural Industries – Mastercraftsmen, hoteliers, entrepreneurs,tour operators, etc. This exhilaratingmeet (ChrCha) threw up fresh view-

points and experiences for considera-tion & possible amalgamation into themain body of research on the project.Christiana will be back at ARCH in Jan-uary 2014 with a Perth College studentteam working on the project.

Cultural industries are a US$100 bil-lion global market.

In the transition to a knowledgebased economy, the creative and cul-tural industries have become the mostrapidly growing phenomena in theworld.

Though nations have their own con-text specific definitions, all of themadmit the synergy of the cultural andcreative industries and acknowledgethem as the primary drivers of theireconomies.

As you would know by now, the 2year UKIERI project aim is to prepare aworld class course curriculum aroundDesign Communications with speciali-

sation in Cultural & Creative Indus-tries(CCI). At the heart of design com-munication is the examining of socialand cultural ramifications of communi-cation.

Therefore at the same time, the proj-ect will enable faculty and studentswithin both countries to share and ex-perience cultures beyond their own –the crafts, design, fine arts, theatre, ar-chitecture, heritage and tourism etc. -and increase their capacity to be ableto create compelling messages, narratethem in meaningful ways and buildstrategies to broadcast them to theworld.

The pedagogy to be jointly devel-oped, keeping in view the requirementsof the cultural industry in both thecountries, envisages harnessing thecreative use of digital technologies andweb based delivery methods therebyhelping to shape the future, not simply

Chr-Cha is a recently started monthly event or-ganized by the Arch Academy of Design. It isa forum that invites people from all walks of

life to gather & participate in presentations & thoughtprovoking discussions, around interesting topics.Most of the people who come to participate are fromthe creative fraternity as well as connected profes-sions and are a good representation of age & experi-ence in their chosen field of activity. Thus we haveentrepreneurs, designers, media persons, policy mak-ers, heads of NGO’s, government officials, artists &performers, craftsmen, hoteliers, tour operators andso on, all coming to experience & learn new skills, andcontribute their view points and opinions to discus-sions. All this over TEA & SNACKS !

The 2nd Chr-Cha was held on 25th October 2013and was positioned on the calendar to accommodatethe visit to ARCH by Ms. Christiana Margiotti, repre-senting our UKIERI project partner, Perth College,UHI, in Scotland and include her in the proceedings.

The theme thrown open, naturally addressed theimportance of Creative Communication within andsupporting the CCI of India.

Through presentations prepared & made by Chris-tiana, we took the opportunity to introduce our proj-ect on Design Communication for the Creative &Cultural Industries to the participants.

As an example Christiana also presented the detailsof a Scottish project to enumerate the parts and pos-sibilities in a typical CCI project and to show the gen-eral progress of the CCI in her country, Scotland. Sheelaborated on the meaning of the creative industry.

Using the developments at the Scottish heritage siteproject she helped examine and educate the audienceabout factors that assist the business in communicat-ing the true message, from the assistance of Govern-ment, to Signage that becomes crucial forcommunication. The presentation provided us withfood for thought.

The invited individuals, in one way or another, ei-ther represented, or were connected to the IndianCreative & Cultural Industries – Master craftsmen,hoteliers, entrepreneurs, tour operators, Advertisingprofessionals, Media persons etc. This exhilaratingmeet threw up fresh viewpoints and experiences forconsideration & possible amalgamation into the mainbody of research on the UKIERI project.

The event was conducted in a fairly interestingmanner, by giving the participants the choice of sit-ting at tables that defined a role for them, regardlessof who they were in real life, and speak on behalf ofthe chosen role group! The roles included ‘White col-lar Government employee’, ‘Tour-operators’,‘Tourists’, ‘Hoteliers’, ‘Craftsperson’, ‘Rickshaw Puller’,‘Media’, ‘Shop Keeper’ and so on. Each table wasgiven some accessories like Turbans, false handlebarmoustaches, white collars, Ties, whistles, etc to helpthem to fit into their roles comfortably and creatively.The results were intriguing to say the least, with theice broken within minutes and relaxed contributionsto the general mass of ideas and expressed opinions.

The 2 year UKIERI project aims to collaborativelyprepare a world class course curriculum around De-sign Communications with specialisation in Cultural& Creative Industries(CCI)The primary target group for whom materials will bedeveloped and delivered on a ‘Train the trainers’basis will be the vast fraternity of individuals repre-sentative of the Indian Creative & Cultural Industries

– Master craftsmen, hoteliers, entrepreneurs, tour op-erators, Rickshaw Pullers etc as well as design teach-ers and people connected with creative industries.These trainers in turn will train others and createskilled manpower especially amongst youth, as re-quired by the vast creative and cultural industries(CCI) out there using the latest tools and technicalaids i.e. multimedia and web-based delivery methodsvia a website/portal specially created for the purpose.

Apart from general talk & expression of opinionsabout the Indian Creative & Cultural scenario fromthe various viewpoints of the roles played, the par-ticipants were asked to figure out and suggest theuseful contents of the courses they would like to take,as a taxi driver, a shop keeper, a hotelier, etcThe discussions certainly contributed points for con-sideration in the planned contents, structure and de-livery of the intended courses.

A few of the suggestions which emerged are listedbelow - • 15 minutes modules should be prepared about theculture of the country and should be taught to allRickshaw Puller/Taxi drivers so that the true pictureof the country is represented to their clients,.• An online course should be devised so that a craftperson is aware about the value of Indian craft anddoesn’t get exploited.• Different module should be prepared based on ap-proach design.• Visual Merchandising module as well as short termcourses for packaging, promotion etc may be pre-pared.• All of them suggested the course to be a paid one.

The discussions lasted an hour!Chr- Cha will continue to bring together individuals

who have something to contribute towards theknowledge and experience of all of us.

Collaboration is the keyword today, in the fieldof Design, Research and Innovation. Instantcommunication and sharing at high speeds

has made the world effectively smaller, more com-pact; a close knit community of efficiency and gen-erosity, regardless of race, creed and country.

Collaborative cross fertilization, especially in De-sign, creates new knowledge in the shortest possibletime and naturally culminates in original and effectiveoutcomes; contributing immensely and meaningfullyto sustainable improvements in the quality of life andenvironment in general.

Every collaborative venture created in the field ofDesign is an opportunity for exposure and growth forall of us.

It is with this idea of working together that DirectorArchana Surana & I made contact with a few top Uni-versities & colleges of the UK, on our trip there in Sep-tember. It was, in the main, an exercise carryingforward discussions started earlier this year in Feb-ruary, but this time around, we progressed further inour explorations especially with the institutions Ms.Surana had visited then.

The fact that ARCH is implementing nine EDEXCELprogrammes alongside its offered programmes ofstudy, is itself, a matter of interest to most of the in-stitutions in the UK, as the contents and delivery haveoriginated in the UK and adhere to International stan-dards, and are validated independently by PearsonEdexcel which is a prime UK awarding body. They arerecognized as previous learning in the system of lev-els practiced in the UK and students finishing theirPearson Edexcel Level 5 Higher National Diploma atArch are qualified to go on to various institutions inthe UK to take a Top Up Degree (Level 6).

One important part of all discussions held, naturallyrevolved around the exploration of possibilities ofprogression routes and its details.

The other important part examined, consisted ofthe various possibilities around Exchanges, both Stu-dent as well as Faculty, ranging from short term tomedium & longer term.

In the mutually energising and engaging atmos-phere of exploring collaborative action, a great dealof interest has been shown in taking these parts viz.Progression & Exchanges, forward and we are in theprocess of working out details to sign MOUs with all

of the institutions visited. For example, you may know that we have already

signed a Letter of Co-operation (LOC) with DeMont-fort University, Leicester. In the meetings held thistime, we examined minutely, the details of the kindsof possibilities available for Progression. We also dis-cussed student exchange and Ph.d studies for ourfaculty. We are in the process now of evolving MOU’sand Progression Agreements with DeMontfort. Youmay remember (from a report in a previous issue ofBackstitch) Ms. Suranas visit to DeMontfort in Feb-ruary followed by the visit to ARCH by Dr. GerardMoran, DeMontfort’s Academic Director, OverseasEngagement. We are expecting another visit by verysenior DeMontfort office bearers in January nextyear, when we shall, in all likelihood, finalize arrange-ments for the next stage of collaboration.

In the same spirit, we are on the brink of signingan MOU with Salford University, Greater Manchester,with whom we held very detailed discussions thistime, on all the aspects mentioned earlier; Studentexchange, in particular, potentially including credit-bearing elements with small numbers of students (3or 4 at a time per programme) and

Staff exchange and cross-teaching with specialistprojects or workshops, in-country or cross-campuses(blended learning), or shared module elements, po-tentially credit-bearing in the future.

With the intention of collaborating in the fields ofGraphic Design, Design Communication, Fashion &Interior Design, we discussed curriculum building asalso Progression routes to level 6 top-up and beyond.Salford, with its fantastic Media City campus, hasproposed to offer any student progressing to a level6 top-up year, automatic progression onto a 1-yearMA in the same subject.

The exchange elements, as discussed, could be pos-sibly up to 1 or 2 semesters, in both directions, withopportunities for Salford students to explore connec-tions with local craft industries in textiles and blockprinting in India, in the Jaipur region.

We also visited Goldsmiths College, London; theUniversity of the Creative Arts (UCA), Farnham;Swansea Metropolitan, Wales; Glasgow Clyde/ Car-donald, Glasgow, Scotland ; Middlesex University,London; & of course Perth College UHI, Scotland.

We are in the middle of working out arrangementswith all these institutions and I am happy to say weare progressing very well through the stages of ar-ticulation of agreements, with very encouraging re-sults so far.

If all goes well, we will have visits to our campusfrom DeMontfort, Swansea Metropolitan, and PerthCollege in January 2014 !

Salford is also planning a visit soon to finalizeagreements.

It goes without saying that, we would not be mak-ing this effort if we didn’t have the future of our stu-dents in mind. The growing trend I am now seeingamongst our students is not just the desire for a job,but for further studies in design, and the explorationof opportunities for greater exposure to the world.

We are moving in exciting times and ARCH is com-mitted to global collaboration to facilitate the ambi-tions of our students and the growth of the capacitiesand reputation of our institution.

No doubt its this level of awarenessthat prompted the JMRCL to publish anExpression of Interest (EOI) calling forproposals from well established Fash-ion/ Uniform Design firms to partici-pate in a ‘Uniform Design Contest 'todesign Office Uniforms for the employ-ees of the upcoming Jaipur Metro.

The ARCH ACADEMY OF DESIGNbeing one of the leading Design Acad-emies in India with its experience inUniform Design and its competent De-sign faculty, responded to the callthrough its Project Cell and made itsbid in the ‘Uniform Design Competi-tion’ project.

The competition was based on strin-gent eligibility criteria, and Arch suc-cessfully won the EOI bid conducted byJMRC for the competition, outstrippingand surpassing the efforts of other bid-ders (institutes/ firms) who had ap-plied for the contest.

meticulous research work with tacticalDesign thinking and the technical sup-port of ATDC (Apparel Training & De-sign Centre) & Textile Committee,Jaipur. Members of the team also vis-ited ‘Metro Bhawan’, N. Delhi (DMRC)to get further insights in order to makethe research work more meaningful.

All these initiatives finally lead to thesuccessful designing of the Uniforms forthe Jaipur Metro staff; taking into con-sideration the design brief, time sched-ule & terms of reference with the threekey attributes – Smart, Speed & Modernwith a touch of Tradition. The final Sum-mer & Winter Uniform samples/ Proto-types (6 uniforms) covered –• Managerial Cadre, • Station Controller/ Train Operator, • Customer Relation Assistant, • Junior Engineers,

• Maintenance Staff & • Outsourced Staff

Taking due cognizance of the rapidmodernization of the Pink City in thelast few years, and the need for pre-serving the Identity, Gender equalityand the Sensibilities of the citizens ofJaipur (suggestions received throughweb-based Consultation Forum madeby JMRC), the Design team of ARCH ac-cordingly selected prudently aptcolours, designs, shapes & patterns soas to impart to the Jaipur Metro Uni-form, a smart & contemporary look,coupled with a unique touch of tradi-tion.

The set of the final range of garments(uniforms) covering the six categories(cadres) as per the design parametersprovided by JMRCL, were developedand presented to the high-profile seven

member Jury ap-pointed by theJMRC for final eval-uation. After criticalanalysis of all com-peting uniforms,the Jury finally ad-judged the uni-forms designed &developed by ARCHas the best, andwent on to suggesta few modificationsin terms of colourshades (red & pink)& patterns. The de-sired amendmentswere incorporatedby the ARCH teamand the concludingset of uniform de-signs was acceptedin principle by theJury & JMRC andthus ARCH won thecompetition.

Since then it hascompleted and de-livered the mainphase of the projectsuccessfully withonly manufacturingto follow.

Consequent ly ,ARCH was invitedby JMRC for thePress Conferenceheld on 14th No-vember 2013 at its

conference hall, wherein they publiclydeclared the result of the Design Com-petition and announced the launch ofthe designed Jaipur Metro Uniforms.Mr. Sanjay Joshi, Sr. Manager - ProjectCell (ARCH) presented the ‘JaipurMetro Uniform Design Portfolio’ alongwith Ms. Richa Lakwal, Fashion DesignFaculty (ARCH). The press & media rep-resentatives covering the whole eventinterviewed Ms. Archana Surana, Direc-tor (ARCH), who encapsulated thewhole development process in thepresence of Mr. Nihal Chand Goel(CMD - Jaipur Metro), Ms. SusmeetaSrivastava (Director, Corporate Affairs- JMRC) & other senior members ofJMRC. Mr. Goel and Ms. Srivastava alsoissued signed testimonials to ARCH, ac-knowledging & appreciating the goodwork done.

JMRC has uploaded the whole Uni-form Design Document (pdf) presentedby ARCH on its websitehttp://www.jaipurmetro rail.in and it isavailable for viewing by the public.

It is worth mentioning that the wholeprocess of Uniform Design was imple-mented by the ARCH team in a trulyprofessional & transparent mannerwith the active support of the entireJMRC team at all levels. ARCH ex-presses sincere gratitude to JMRCL, itsChairman & Managing Director (Mr. N.C. Goel) who gave ARCH the opportu-nity to do this challenging project, itsDirector - Corporate Affairs (Ms. Sus-meeta), Director - Operations & Sys-tems (Mr. C. S. Jeengar), ExecutiveDirector – Corporate Affairs (Mr. R. Having worked on a range of market drivenprojects for over 25 yrs I started feeling theneed to, in some way, use my experience and

expertise in making a difference to my environ-ment.and this eventually led to the conception of TheRetyrement Plan

By utilising materials that are not considered beau-tiful or exclusive, in the classic sense, and convertingthem into products that are well designed, appealingand above all can in some way incorporate the wastethat is generated by so many industries all aroundus..

Mine has been a hands on approach to design andworking with and alongside weavers, printers and

other craftsmen to give form to a concept gives methe greatest high. The materials used are all either re-cycled or sustainable.

Working with a dusty, well used tyre, and thenusing the same detail and design that you would witha piece of expensive raw material, is the way I ap-proach each piece. The tyres are washed and sani-tised and then ready to be worked on. The ropesmade of recycled tailoring waste or plastic wrapperwaste are carefully coordinated to be woven inweaves that are durable and will come together in acohesive manner to result in a unique and well de-tailed product.

I have tried to work with ideals of fair trade and

given the craftsmen a vibrant work environment, re-spect, an inclusive approach, and the credit and thatthey honestly deserve. I believe that a good designcan be sustainable and relevant only if the persontranslating it can relate to it and contribute to it's im-provisation and innovation.

'I have been exploring ways of combining skill setsthat have not been explored before. Combining cro-chet skills to upcycle saree scrap into home furnish-ings, using printing waste to make lamps, andconverting political flex hoardings into bags and wal-lets is one of my ongoing projects.

I would, in my own small way, want to be thechange I want to see...

The idea derives from the fact that the textileindustry which involves the Weavers, Dyersand Craftsmen with intrinsic traditional wis-

dom of eco-friendly natural dyeing & weaving tech-niques further value added with indigenoushand-printing (block printing, tie-dye, shibori) skillsare transitioned to the use of synthetic dyes causinghazardous effluent and adverse environmental im-pacts. The paper portrays the need for reviving theseheritage crafts and re-establishing the skilled craftcommunities through mobilization, awareness gener-ation, dedicated design & product development, andtechnological up-gradation to strengthen and im-prove the value chain of natural dyed/ hand printedtextile products of India. This will result in main-streaming the Eco craft products and reduction ofecological impacts through effective use of environ-ment friendly dyes. The paper is suggestive of an in-tegrated design intervention based on triple bottomline approach (social, economy, environment) and in-cludes multiple interventions – • Sensitization & orientation of Textile industry, Arti-san communities, Government & Global Consumersfor the use of natural products, • Organized cultivation & aggregation of natural dyesources (backward linkages), • Scientific processing for dye extraction & storage,Standardization of production norms/ procedures toattain desired colour palette for making hi-fashionproducts (horizontal linkages)• Branding, Packaging & Market promotion (verticallinkages) so as to ensure occupational health and safety of theartisans, position green textile products in hi-fashionmarkets, augment its marketability worldwide, pro-vide sustainable livelihood solutions to marginalizedcommunities, and reduce the impact of chemical dyeson ecosystem.Based on the findings of the research and analysiswork, the following possible interventions are sug-gested to achieve the overall objective: 1. Standardization of Natural dye• Setup of ‘Heritage Craft Incubation Centre’• Use of Hybrid variety of seeds of the plants fromwhich natural dyes are extracted• Introducing Colour Palette for Natural dyes2. Market Connects: Local to Global: Sustainable link-ages & trust has to be evolved between natural dye-plant cultivators, aggregators, researchinstitutions/testing laboratories, design institutions,suppliers, traders, industry players, and destinedmarkets to achieve transparent and ethical businessthrough fair trade practices. 5. Branding and Promotion• Natural Dye Kit: Most of the natural dyes are ob-tained from fruits where the enzymes act only for aparticular time period and the juices / dyes get rottenafter certain hours have passed. Therefore, experi-ments can be done to find ways for their preservation& bottled versions of dyes can be sold which can beused in our day to day lives.• Literature/Catalogue: The literature of the naturaldyes and dyestuff including the story line (socio-eco-nomic profile of traditional artisans practicing naturefriendly crafts) is essential part of brand promotion& marketing.• Packaging/Product Range: as the project intends toenhance use of natural dyes, fashionable clothingproducts (which intend to be produced in several soft& soothing colours) would be a part of the productrange.• Product Range: As a result of the pilot intervention,the final product range will consists of a smart rangeof sustainable Eco-Fashion products & Ethical luxury

clothing (men/ women/ kids), thereby adhering toglobal standards of global safety with energy efficientproduction processes.

To conclude, we can say that in India, arts andcrafts are not necessarily practiced for commercialreasons alone; they also serve a social, ritualistic ordecorative purpose. Aesthetics in everyday life iscommon to all communities and can be found acrossthe mediums. Introduction of natural colours in theform of trendy market led products (textile garments& craft souvenirs) and its strategic promotion willhelp the revival of the dyeing craft. Product diversifi-cation into utilitarian items coupled with innovativedesign initiatives would be a prudent idea. With theadvent of synthetic dyes, it seemed that naturalcolours would lose their importance forever. How-ever, the uniqueness of these materials, properties,processes and the glorious colours produced, re-mained unmatched. The demand for eco-friendlydyes has seen a resurrection in their use on textilesand in art. Cultivators/ aggregators of dye plants,Producers of the materials to be dyed, Dyers, Crafts-men/ artists making craft products, Designers, In-dustrialists, Marketers will be the key agents tocreate a sustainable value chain for the Natural Dyesand henceforth, creating job opportunities for them-selves.

The research paper will provide an opportunity forexperimentation and innovation. It will bring togetherdifferent stakeholders across the globe, right from theproducers (base of the pyramid) to the end-consumerswho have an interest in heritage crafts & green hand-crafted products, and are quality/eco/fashion con-scious and socially responsible. Thus, in order toaddress these challenges and to provide tangible &sustainable solution to the indigenous heritage craftindustry, there is a dire need to re-invent the sectorand devise pragmatic strategy for the overall benefitof the stakeholders/communities at large.

Mentoring walk Vital Voices

The 3rd Vital Voices 'Global Men-toring Walk' Jaipur was organ-ized on 16th November by

ARCH Academy of Design and the FlagBearer for the event Archana Surana, inassociation with FICCI Ladies Organi-zation (FLO), Jaipur Chapter. Thisglobal walk was organized in 27 coun-tries simultaneously.

The session witnessed the coming to-gether of different women leaders,from all walks of life, sharing theirideas, experience and expertise withyoung mentees in the pristine sur-roundings of Smriti Vann, Jaipur.

Overall, a 100 women participated inthe walk, including 30 mentors, 60mentees and 10 volunteers. The men-tors were matched with the menteesbased on their area of interest and thefield the mentees wanted to be guidedupon. The mentors were from an agegroup ranging from 30 to 60 yrs and

the mentees ranged in age from 18 to35 yrs. Prof Lad Kumari Jain, Presi-dent, Womens Commission, Rajasthanwas the honourable chief guest for theday. She gave an enlightening speechon women empowerment saying that"every woman has a right to be born,the right to choose a career and theright to choose a partner for life". Asthey walked, they discussed their pro-fessional challenges and achievementsand endowed the ‘emerging’ womenleaders with the ideas to succeed whilemaintaining a perfect work life balance.It was an opportunity to highlight theimportance of women’s leadership, andto accelerate the impact of womenleaders through mentoring. Throughthe medium of the Vital Voices Mentor-ing Walk, ARCH as a collaborator, in-tended to effectively reach out towomen & empower them by givingpractical business orientation, training,

mentoring and access to an entrepre-neurial eco-system while supportingtheir growing aspirations. Mentees notonly gained guidance during the walkbut also established a relation with thementors which will be carried forwardfurther. The overall goal of this GlobalMentoring Walk was:• To value women's participation in so-ciety.• To recognize the importance of "Pay-ing it Forward" by giving back to othersin the community.• To promote mentoring relationshipsbetween emerging and establishedwomen leaders.• To demonstrate a belief in the impor-tance of women's leadership & partici-pation in society.• To instil values of mentoring in risingleaders who can give back to futuregenerations.• Provide aspiring women profession-

als the required support & guidanceneeded to fulfil their goals. The VitalVoices Global Mentoring Walk gave aplatform to mentors to pay back to so-ciety whatever learning and experi-ences they had, to mentees who aregrowing in their respective fields. Wehope to make this event even more suc-cessful in the coming years so that weall can work for the noble cause of“Women Empowerment” together.

TiE is a global,not-for-profit

network of entre-preneurs and pro-

Entrepreneurship is a choice. It is not reserved for an elitegroup of humanity. It can be learned. I realized this in myearly twenties, after reading a study by a prominent Stan-

ford professor.We tend to over-glamorize the solo characteristics of an entre-

preneur. I believe that more than singular traits like brilliance orpassion, social tendencies matter. Individuals who are able to cre-ate and nurture relationships with people have a leg up. Relation-ships with strategic mentors, customers and even your team canmake or break your success. It takes more than a Steve Jobs. Appleis and was an outlier.

A successful entre-preneur, is an individ-ual who realizes thecriticalness of rela-tionships. One suchrelationship is men-torship. Young entre-preneurs need toprioritize sourcingand leveraging con-tent-specific mentors.People who can helpwith various businessobstacles like financ-ing or creative cus-tomer acquisition.Mentors can be in-dustry experts, pro-fessors or even peers

who are tackling an adjacent problem. Everyone should have amentor and life advisory board.

Another key relationship is with your customers. It is importantto incorporate customer feedback throughout the life cycle of aventure. Whether it is determining targeting messaging that at-tracts your early adopter, or developing design that customerslove. Often times, entrepreneurs forget to engage with their targetcustomers face to face. Instead, they only engage in market sizinganalysis as opposed to anthropological analysis. Both are criticalto determining if your venture is viable and desirable. This is whatis taught in pedagogies like Lean Startup and IDEO’s user centereddesign.

The final element to an entrepreneur's success is their team. Put-ting together a diverse team is critical to the forward thinking andlong-term creativity of a business. The founder of a venture mustappreciate their team members generously through compensationbut also emotionally through valuing feedback. Afterall, your teamis taking a risk by working for you so you have to reward and valuetheir input. Often times, I see this fade in South Asian businesses.

Relationships are critical, because they provide feedback. Inorder to get through your ventures trials and tribulations more ef-ficiently, you need to incorporate a trusted feedback loop fromyour mentors, customers and team members. Remember, there isno “I” in entrepreneurship.

He is an Indian-American entrepreneur settledin Jaipur, India & the Silicon Valley, U.S.A.The first he calls his “Janmabhoomi” while

the latter he says, is his “Karmabhoomi” and he saysit is difficult to part with either of them!

ARCH was honoured to have such an eminent per-sonality on campus to share his experiences. The ses-sion was on “Usage of Technology for Innovation andEntrepreneurship”.

He enlightened the students with examples and thereasons for the importance of technology and the ex-tent to which technology makes our lives simple andeasy. The examples ranged from the “Google Car” toa “3D printer”. A short statured man, he has achievedextraordinary heights with his indomitable courageand attitude. His thoughts were empowering and re-

flected his perseverance & positivity towards life. Hegave us all an inspiring lesson to ruminate on by say-ing “the glass should always be half full” which meantthat one must look at things positively and shouldnever be complacent and strive harder to achievemore and more.

Mr. Bakshi is an active member of TiE, a body fos-tering budding and dedicated entrepreneurs. His ownlife exemplifies the role of an entrepreneur in our so-ciety. The constant search for innovation drives theentrepreneur to conquer insurmountable difficulties.

On being asked for useful tips to be a successfulentrepreneur he gave 5 mantras - Passion, Persist-ence, People, Pragmatism and Profitability with anemphasis on the 3 W’s i.e. Work, Wisdom andWealth. He said that wealth represents the last few

steps on the ladder to become an entrepreneur since,if you have wisdom and willingness to carry forwardyour idea against all the odds, then wealth wouldcome & not be an obstacle. People fail to realize this,he said, and they think that wealth, or the lack of it,is the biggest challenge to overcome. Hence an ideadies before it is actually born.

Silicon Valley is known for many radical changesand innovation and the area is flooded with entrepre-neurs delivering the best solutions for making theworld a better place to live in. Mr. Bakshi with this in-teractive session gave us a clear message that an en-trepreneur is one whose innovative thinking pavesthe way for the development of a society. It is advis-able for today’s youth to pursue their ideas despiteall obstacles.

Global Entrepreneurship Week is the world’slargest celebration of the innovators and jobcreators who launch startups that bring ideas

to life, drive economic growth and expand human wel-fare.

During one week each year in November, GEW in-spires people the world over, through local, nationaland global activities designed to help them exploretheir potential as self-starters and innovators. Theseactivities, from large-scale competitions and eventsto intimate networking gatherings, connect partici-pants to potential collaborators, mentors and even in-

vestors—introducing them to new possibilities andexciting opportunities.

The initiative, launched in 2008 by the KauffmanFoundation, has since grown to 138 countries withan impressive amount of support from celebrity en-trepreneurs, presidents, prime ministers and otherthought leaders around the world like Richard Bran-son, Michael Dell, and Muhammad Yunus. In 2012,there were nearly 8,000 event partners, 20,000 ac-tivities, and 7.5 million participants.

GEW is more than just an awareness campaign. Itis a platform for connection and collaboration engag-

ing all players along the entrepreneurship spectrumin strengthening ecosystems around the world. The themes for GEW India 2013 are:

Entrepreneurship- a wholistic approach

Asession on ‘How to prepare a Business Plan’was organized on 22nd Nov 2013 at the ArchAcademy of Design on during the Global En-

trepreneur Week (GEW). Students got the opportu-nity to learn the steps of preparing a Business plan.The session was addressed by Ms. Archana Surana,Founder and Director, Arch Academy and proved tobe very enlightening, with the sharing of a lot of busi-ness thought and acumen. She said that for achievingsuccess you require not only skill, but also how to en-cash that skill by inculcating proper organisational

abilities. She being a successful entrepreneur herself,she shared her insights and experiences gainedthroughout her journey. In her words - “It was not acake walk. The journey had lot of thorns and it wasonly continuous persistence and enthusiasm thatmade me an achiever”.

The meaning of Vision & Mission was shared withthe students where Vision defines an overall overviewof the belief & driving force and Mission defines thepath to achieving things. Ms. Surana gave examplesin terms of her own achievements which took place

through research & ex-ploration. She said allstudents must em-power themselves forcontributing their vi-sion & mission to thesociety in the sameway as the vision &mission shared herewith them.

She told the studentsthat finance is thefoundation of everybusiness, hence the im-portance of Angel in-

vestors & Venture capital was discussed and howthey were helpful to invest in start-up business interms of providing the fund for small businesses.Venture capital provides more fund to invest on bigbusiness.

She said that each student possesses a unique iden-tity and signature style and must introspect them-selves for making a difference among others; a kindof product differentiation to distinguish one from theother.

The importance of other support activities likehuman resources management, marketing, mediamanagement, operations, publicity etc was broughtto the notice of the students. Without these activities,she said, the business cannot scale up and a good andmotivated team is important in this respect becauseany one single person cannot make any organisationsuccessful.

Ms. Surana ended the session by advising the stu-dents to also focus on the work - life balance. She alsostressed on the importance of ownership for groom-ing of business. It was a very interactive session andstudents actually presented their business ideas andcontributed to the discussions over it.

Jaipur, 25th November 2013: Think- Unthinkable,Reach – Unreachable and Dream Impossible, greatinsights from a man of immense knowledge – Dr. SidGautam.

Dr. Gautam, a motivational speaker and member ofTIE, addressed the students at ARCH on the topic“how to think like an entrepreneur” in the GEW(Global Entrepreneurship Week). He said that entre-preneur is one who doesn’t do different things but heis the one who does things differently. He also saidthat the entrepreneur never cribs about problems buthe is the one who identifies the problems and takescalculated risks to find its solutions. This greatlearned person quoted the Gita and Upanishads inpure Sanskrit and said that the essence of an entre-preneur lies in the Gita. He inspired the students byasking them to break the wall of fear, remove theenemy and be a go-getter. He said that success andfailure are two parts of the same coin. Success is thejourney not the destination.

It was a very enlightening session with a flow ofample thought provoking and inspiring thoughts &views.

In parting, Dr. Gautam said that the meaning of Lit-eracy has changed in the present times. Today, thosewho can adapt to change are the ones known as Lit-erates.

Dr. Sid Gautam was born and educated inIndia. He holds a Ph.D. in Financial Econom-ics. He began his affiliation with MethodistUniversity in the U.S.A, when he joined itsfaculty in 1968. He was Chairman of the De-partment of Economics and Business Admin-istrator for 20 years. He founded the Centre forEntrepreneurship in 1973 andwas its director until he re-tired in July 2012. He wasalso given a DistinguishedService Award by theUnited National Associa-tion of the UnitedStates. TheMethodist Uni-versity AlumniAssoc ia t ionr e c o g n i z e dhim for his 40years of teach-

ing and leadership. The Universityhas also recognized him as the “En-trepreneur of the Year” in 2011,and also awarded him the highest“Medallion” of the University.

Dr. Sid GautamA doctorate in Financial Economics joined as Fac-ulty in Methodist University in 1968. He was chair-man of the department of Economics and BusinessAdministrator for 20 years. He founded the Centerfor Entrepreneurship in 1973 and was its director

until he retired in July 2012. He has been a mem-ber or founding member of numerous civic organi-zations, including the Cape Fear River Assembly,North Carolina Chapter of T. I. E.
