Representing Amuri were 4 Year 4/5 teams, 4 Year 5/6 teams and 10 Year 7/8 teams. Beautiful weather provided a pleasant setting for much good-natured competition between the neighbouring schools in touch rugby, soccer and netball. With the goal of the day to encourage participation and enjoyment of sport, there was plenty of evidence to suggest this had been achieved. Many thanks to the very efficient parents and caregivers who attended and supported the teams to give nothing but the best on the day. At assembly this week our Head Students spoke about change that occurs in our lives and the importance of mindset. There are two types of mindset - fixed and growth and for people to be able to cope with change and develop the resilience to face challenges in life they need to be in the growth mindset camp. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work regardless of talent or brains. A good message to get across. Assembly also continued with our value of RESPECT and it was a pleasure to award Room 5 with a Principal’s Award for taking up the challenge to become a class of eco warriors. Room 5 have been very active in tidying up our immediate school environment and having a focus on the use of plastics in food packaging. This environmental protection theme continues to be a focus in their current Antarctic Study. Raising and maintaining our understanding of the issues that cause global warming and environmental degradation and what individually we can do to combat this are very important to us all. There are many things that happen daily where students are demonstrating our values. This week we had the cooking classes being covered on Monday by other staff – two of our senior Independent Living students volunteered to take the lead with the Hanmer Year 7/8 cooking students. Jayde Murphy took control, came up with a cooking alternative as the food order for the day had not arrived and ran the class like clockwork with Arcadian Turner assisting. Every teacher who went into the class in those two hours remarked on what an outstanding job was being done. Our thanks to Jayde and Arcadian for their fantastic work. As school is closed on Friday for a Teacher Only Day, we had our Cancer Awareness Day on Thursday across the whole school. Ms McCarthy designed an activity pack for all the form and junior classes and the students contributed to a coin trail. The collection of coins (and notes) was humbling and none more so than the $62.10 contributed by BBM form class - it is evident that our students have a real awareness of the statistics regarding cancer and the impact cancer has on individuals and families and wished to do their bit. We are just so proud of our students – Kia Kitea Toikaka – Nothing but the Best. Why Maths is Valued at Amuri Maths Week’s estimates an audience of more than 250,000 students, teachers and parents from around New Zealand in August each year. In its 22nd year of operation, Maths Week is the creation of the New Zealand Association of Mathematics Teachers (NZAMT), a registered charity with the following aims: Find out more about NZAMT at http://www.nzamt.org.nz This is a fantastic site to visit. Like New Zealand Maths Week, Amuri Area School has its own version called Amuri Maths Week, celebrating all things mathematical within our community. Entries are open to all junior classes up to Year 10. The categories are Maths posters, Maths models, Edible Maths, Wearable Maths and a new topic this year, Reciprocal teaching of maths. This is where a group of students teach another group of students something “mathy”. A number of these entries are also taken down to the Cantamath competition in Christchurch on the 28th August. This year neighbouring schools were invited to enter our competition. We had a superb response from Hanmer Primary School who cleaned out the Edible section with Maths-related pizzas, cakes and biscuits. Yummo! Not only has maths been celebrated in Week 4, three teams attended the North Canterbury Cantamath Competition in Ohoka. We had fantastic results with second place in both the Year 7 and Year 8 competition and a mid-table placing for the year 6 pupils. A very special thanks to Joc Kinney and Amy

Cundy for transportation and support while there. For the large, Christchurch Cantamath competition, preparations have begun in earnest. Year 7/8 have a weekly problem-solving maths slot to hone and develop analytical thinking skills. Shane Cundy has kindly given up his two Tuesday afternoons for further coaching and tuition of our Maths teams. Again, Amuri Area School is so grateful to our amazing parent community who support our learners in so many areas of the school. We do have a wonderful, caring and positive whanau. On the BIG CANAMATH night the Year 7s scored 60/100 and Year 8s scored 55/100. The buzz around the Horncastle arena was electrifying as over 400 children competed in each

year category. We are very proud of all those students who took part. It was lovely to have Joc Kinney and Amy Cundy join Mr Black and I in all the excitement.

Cantamaths Another exciting Cantamath competition evening for Year 9/10. After a pit-stop at McDonalds we entered Horncastle Arena to find Highly Commended awards for Mateo Jamieson’s 3D poster, and for Willow, Lily, Brylie and Maddie's wearable Maths. From behind the stadium stand we could hear the cheering as the Year 8 competition winners were being announced. Our Year 9 team Myla, Mateo, Francis and Damian, made a great start to the fast paced competition. At one point Mateo, our runner, had his trainer accidentally knocked off by another student. The Year 10 team Lily, Willow, Jed and Francis worked hard at attempting each question no more than three times. Another accident as Francis was run over by another student! We were all amazed at how quickly some of the scores went up for other schools. We couldn’t have tried any harder and have resolved to tackle more practice questions throughout the year. We arrived back at school at 11:10 pm and nearly all of us were back in school the next morning. Well done to everyone. Thank you to the parents for waiting to collect their young people so late and thank you to our volunteer Susanne for accompanying us.

Amuri Area School PTA Calf Scheme

The Calf Scheme we run every year is our No. 1 fundraiser for our school. Every year, thanks to your generous support, we raise in excess of $30,000.00. All money raised goes to classroom resources, school excursions or any other needs within the school. If you are keen to donate to this years’ scheme, please let us know and we will get tags to you. This year, to avoid any mycoplasma bovis risk, the stock will be held at the Sale-yards overnight rather than on private property. The following day they will be transported to the sale. If you would rather make a monetary donation, as any donation is greatly appreciated, please donate through online banking using your surname and first name as reference, code CALF. Our bank account number is 03-1582-0069597-00.

If you are after a tag or two or need any further information, please contact Vicky Hamilton on 021-134-1793 or Fiona Dwyer on 027-260-2027. Please note that you will need to ensure all donated stock are NAIT tagged.
