1 Application and scope
1.1 APPLICATIONTitan™&ExoTec™FacadePanelsareusedtoformnegativeexpressedjointedFacadesfixedthroughcavitybattensintothetimberframingandactasarainscreen.
TitanFacadePanelisamediumdensity,9mmthickpanelwithbothfacesandedgessealed.TitanFacadePanelissuitableforlightcommercialandresidentialbuildingapplications.
ExoTecFacadePanelisahighdensity,9mmthickcompressedpanelwithbothfacesandedgessealed.ExoTecFacadePanelissuitableforcommercialbuildingapplications.
Titan&ExoTecRainscreenreferredas‘TER’elsewhereinthisspecificationisbasedonthepressuremoderationrainscreenprinciple.Inessencethebulkofthewaterisstoppedattherainscreenlayerwhiletheairbarrierequalizesthepressureinthecavitywiththepressureoutsidetherainscreenthuslimitingwateringress.

2 Design2.1 COMPLIANCETitanandExoTecRainscreenhasbeenappraisedbyBRANZLtd.Theappraisalnumberis467(2005).TheappraisalcertificatecanbeviewedatBRANZwebsiteorAskJamesHardieon0800808868.
2.2 RESPONSIBILITYThespecifier/designerfortheprojectisresponsibleforensuringthattheinformationanddetailsincludedinthisspecificationaresuitablefortheintendedapplication.
ThespecifiershallaccommodatetheappropriateprovisionsrequiredbytheNewZealandBuildingCode(NZBC).Carefuldetailingofallpenetrationsthroughtheairbarrierandrainscreenisrequiredandtheymustbeappropriatelyflashedandweatherproofed.Theothermaterialsandcomponentsthatareusedtomanagemoisturemustbeinstalledaspertheirmanufacturers’instructionsandcomplywiththerequirementsofrelevantstandardsandtheNZBC.
Thedesigner/specifiermustensurethatallthereferencedocumentsandstandardsreferredtoduringthedesignandconstructionprocessarecurrentandvalid.Thedesignermustidentifythemoisturerelatedrisksassociatedwiththeparticularbuildingdesign.Thedesignandconstructionmusteffectivelymanagetheexternalmoisture.
ThewindowstobeusedwithTitanandExoTecRainscreen
mustbespecificallydesignedconsideringthedesignwindpressuresandthedeflectionsinthebuildingstructure.Refertothewindowmanufacturer/suppliersforinformationregardingtheirspecificationsandinstallationrequirements.

JamesHardieconductsstringentqualitycheckstoensurethatanyproductmanufacturedfallswithinourqualityspectrum.Itistheresponsibilityofthebuildertoensurethattheproductmeetsaestheticrequirementsbeforeinstallation.JamesHardiewillnotberesponsibleforrectifyingobviousaestheticsurfacevariationsfollowinginstallation.

2.3 FOUNDATIONBuildingfoundationsmustbebasedon‘goodground’asdefinedintheApprovedDocumentoftheNZBCB1‘Structure’.ThegroundshouldalsosatisfytherequirementsofGeotechnicalEngineers.ThefoundationdesignmustsatisfytherequirementsoftheNZBCClauseB1‘Structure’.
2.4 CLEARANCESThebottomedgeofTitanandExoTecFacadePanelmustmaintainaclearanceof100mmminimumfrompavedgroundsand175mmminimumfromunpavedground.
Ontheroofsanddeckstheminimumclearancemustbe50mm.Donotinstallexternalcladdingsuchthatitmayremainincontactwithwaterorground.
2.5 MOISTURE MANAGEMENTItistheresponsibilityofthespecifiertoidentifymoisturerelatedrisksassociatedwithanyparticularbuildingdesign.Wallconstructiondesignmusteffectivelymanagemoisture,consideringboththeinteriorandexteriorenvironmentsofthebuilding,particularlyinbuildingsthathaveahigherriskofwinddrivenrainpenetrationorthatareartificiallyheatedorcooled.
WallsshallincludethoseprovisionsasrequiredbytheNZBCAcceptableSolutionE2/AS1‘ExternalMoisture’.Inadditionall
wallopenings,penetrations,junctions,connections,windowsills,headsandjambsmustincorporateappropriateflashingsforwaterproofing.Theothermaterials,componentsandinstallationmethodsusedtomanagemoistureinexternalwalls,mustcomplywiththerequirementsofrelevantstandardsandtheNZBC.ForfurtherinformationondesigningforweathertightnessrefertoBRANZLtdandtheMinistryofBusiness,Innovation&Employmentupdatesonthefollowingwebsitesrespectively,www.branz.co.nzandwww.building.govt.nz.
2.6 STRUCTUREThesupportingtimberframeforTERmustbeprovidedinaccordancewiththestructuraldesignrequirementsoftheproject.Timberframingsizemustmeettheminimumrequirementsofthisspecification.Ifsaginexcessof10mmisexpectedinconcreteortimberflooringthenspecificdesignofthehorizontaljointswillneedtobeundertakenbytheEngineerordesigner.
2.7 WIND LOADINGTERissuitableforuseupto4.5kPa(ULS)maximumwindpressuresasoutlinedinTable1.TheprojectspecificwindpressuresexperiencedonbuildingfacademustbecalculatedinaccordancewithAS/NZS1170.WhencomparingtheEngineer’sspecificationforstudcentreswithTable1,thesmallerspacingvaluemustbeused.
2.8 SEISMICTERissuitableforuseuptoamaximumsiesmicdisplacementordeflectionuptospan/180(ULS).
2.9 STRUCTURAL BRACINGTERusingRABBoardcanbeusedtoachievestructuralbracingforbuildingsthatareconstructedwithinthescopeofNZS3604(Timber-framedBuildings).RABBoardfixedtotheframingasperRABBoardbracingdetailswillprovidetherequiredbracing.Forfurtherinformationonbracing,AskJamesHardieon0800808868.
2.10 FIRE RESISTANCE RATED WALLSTERconstructedasperthisspecificationusingallothersystemcomponentsinaccordancewithJamesHardieFireandAcousticDesignManualwillachievefireresistanceratingsupto30or60minutes.(Note:JamesHardieMineralInsulationwillrequirenogsat800mmcentresmaximum).
3 Framing3.1 GENERALTheEngineer/designerisresponsiblefortheframedesign.ThedesignwindpressuresaretobecalculatedinaccordancewithAS/NZS1170consideringlocalfactors.
3.2 TIMBER FRAMETimberframingmustbeinaccordancewithNZS3604(Timber-framedbuildings)orasperthespecificengineeringdesign(SED)fortheprojectinaccordancewithNZS3603andAS/NZS1170.
3.3 STUDSNominal100x50mmstudsmustbeprovidedatamaximumof600mmcentres.TheframingcentrescanbereducedtosuitthecalculatedwindpressurerequirementsasperEngineer’sdesign.Anominal75mmwideminimumstudisrequiredatallverticalpaneljoints.Thiscouldalsobeachievedwithtwonominal50mmwidestudsspikedtogether.
3.4 NOGSNominal100x50mmminimumsizenogsarerequiredat800mmcentresmaximumingeneral.CheckEngineer’sdesign,Clause2.6andClause2.10ofthisspecificationforotherspecialrequirementsfornogcentres.Forhorizontalaluminiumsocketjointsaminimum125mmwideframingmemberisrequiredbehindthejoint.RefertoFigure8or10.

3.5 FRAMING TREATMENTThetimberwallframingmustbetreatedtoaminimumofH1.2treatmentlevel.RefertotheApprovedDocumentfortheNZBCClauseB2‘Durability’andNZS3602(TimberandWood-BasedProductsforuseinBuildings)regardingtreatmentrequirementsandallowablemoisturecontentsoftimberforvariouscomponentsofthebuilding.RefertoNZS3640(TreatmentofRoughandSawnTimber)forfurtherinformationabouttimbertreatment.Alsorefertotheframingmanufacturer’sliteratureforfurtherguidanceontheuseoftreatedtimber.
3.6 TOLERANCESInordertoachieveanacceptablewallfinish,itisimperativethatframingisstraightandtrue.Framingtolerancesmustcomplywiththerequirementsofprojectspecificationwhenspecified.
4 Air Barrier4.1 GENERALPressureequalisationwithinthecavitiesbehindafacadeisimportantforitslongtermweathertightnesspermanence.TheuseofRABBoardorrigidairbarriershelpsinachievingpressureequalisation.
4.2 RIGID AIR BARRIER (RAB BOARD)TheRABBoardisafibrecementsheetwhichissealedonthefrontfaceandedgesandisusedasarigidairbarrier.RefertoRigidAirBarriersInstallationManualforinformationregardingitsinstallation.AhorizontalgapisrequiredbetweentheRABBoardsatfloorlevelstoaccommodateanyshrinkageoftimberorcreepofconcrete.
4.3 BUILDING UNDERLAYForbuildingswhichareexposedtowindpressuresupto1.5kPa(ULS),abuildingunderlaymaybeused(anon-rigidairbarrier)inplaceoftheRABBoardcomplyingwiththerequirementsofTable23ofE2/AS1.
Theunderlaysmustbeinstalledinaccordancewiththeirmanufacturer’srecommendations.
5 Cavity Battens
5.1 BATTEN SIZEThebattensmustbe45mmwidex18mmdeepminimum.
5.2 BATTEN LAYOUTBattensmustbefixedovertheairbarriertoallstuds.Doublebattensoverdoublestudsarerequiredbehindallverticaljointsoftherainscreen.Whereabuildingunderlay(anon-rigidairbarrier)isused,thebattensmustbeprovidedat300mmcentreswhenthestudsareprovidedat600mmcentres.Whenthestudsareprovidedat400mmcentres,thebattensareonlyrequiredonstuds.Ifthehorizontalaluminium‘T’socketjointisusedatfloorlevelsorinbetweenfloorheights,thenverticalpackersarerequiredonthenogs/dwangs.Theseverticalpackersmustbefixedat300mmcentresmaximumtofacilitatepanelfixing.RefertoFigure8.Cavitybattensmustnotberuncontinuouslyfromlowerfloorstoupperfloors.Theymusthaveagapbetweenthematthefloorlevelstoallowforthestructuralmovements.ReferFigures10-12.
5.3 CAVITY BATTEN TREATMENT BattensmustbetreatedtoaminimumofH3.1asdefinedinNZS3602.Thetypeoftreatmentchosenmustbecompatiblewiththedurabilityrequirementsofothercomponentsusedintherainscreensystem.RefertoTable21ofE2/AS1forfurtherinformationregardingthecompatibilityofmaterials.
6 Rainscreen6.1 GENERALTitanandExoTecFacadePanelinstalledoncavitybattensasperthisspecificationactsasarainscreen.AnymoistureingressbehindtherainscreenismanagedonthefaceofRABBoard,whereiteitherdriesordrainsoutthroughthebottomofcavity.
6.2 RAINSCREEN VERTICAL JOINTVerticalexpressedjoints10mmwideareformedwithaButylInseal®stripfixedundertheverticalsheetedges,refertoFigure7.
FixtheButylInsealstripwithstaplesthroughitsouteredgesat300mmmaximumcentresbothsides.
Apackerisrequiredontheintermediatestudstoachievesurfaceflatnessofrainscreenpanels.

6.3 RAINSCREEN HORIZONTAL JOINTHorizontaljointsintherainscreencanbeformedintwoways,eitherusingaluminium‘T’socketorahorizontal‘Z’flashing.
Analuminium‘T’socketisusedtoformanexpressed/negativehorizontaljoint.Thealuminium‘T’socketisgluedtothetoprearedgeoflowerpanel.Fixingsthroughtheloweredgeofuppersheetmustnotpenetratethroughthealuminium‘T’socket.RefertoFigure8or10.
Normallya2mmpackerisrequiredunderthealuminium‘T’socket.UseoftwolayersofDPCisrecommendedforthispurpose.ReferFigure8or10formoreinformation.
‘Z’flashingsarenormallyusedtodrainoffthemoistureaccumulatedwithinacavityandmustbeprovidedafterevery7mheightmaximum.RefertoFigure9.
RefertoTable20ofE2/AS1toselectasuitableflashingmaterialconsideringthedurabilityrequirements.
6.4 JUNCTIONSWhereTERmeetsothertypesofcladdingsoratwallintersections,aspecificweathertightnessdesignisrequiredforthisjunctiontowithstandthemoistureingressconsideringdesignwindpressuresaswellasthestructuralmovements.Thespecifier/designerisresponsibleforprovidingdetailsforsuchjunctions.JamesHardieNewZealandLimitedhaspublishedstandardjunctiondetailsandareavailableonourwebsiteatwww.jameshardie.co.nz.Refertoitforfurtherinformationandguidance.
6.5 CAVITY VENTILATIONPunchingsintheJamesHardieuPVCventstrippermitaventilation/drainageopeningareaof1000mm2perlinealmetreofcavity.
7 Fixing
7.1 GENERAL ThemoisturecontentofthetimberframeandcavitybattenmustcomplywiththelimitationsofNZS3602priortofixingtheRABBoardandrainscreenpanels.Framingmustbekeptasdryaspossibleatalltimesduringtheconstructionphasetokeepmoisturecontentswithinthelimitsassetoutinthisstandard.
7.2 RAB™ BOARDRefertoRABBoardinstallationmanualregardingtheinstallationinformationandtheconstructiondetails.
7.3 CAVITY BATTEN Fixbattenstoallstudsusing40x2.8mmHardieFlexnailsat800mmcentres.Fixsmallcavitypackers150mmlongatbottomplateandnogstofacilitatepanelfixing.RefertoTable2fordurabilityrequirementsoffixings.
7.4 RAINSCREENTitanandExoTecFacadePanelsshallbefixedinaccordancewithTable1.Note:ExoTecFacadePanelsmustonlybescrewfixed.Allpaneledgesmustbesupported.
Thescrewsfixingsmusthaveawoodthreadandaminimum9mmheaddiameter.Thescrewsmustbedrivenperfectlytightagainstthepanelssothatthereisnomovementbetweenthepanelsandframing.Theminimumedgedistanceof18mmmustbemaintainedwhenfixingscrewsornailsthroughtherainscreenpanels.Whencountersunkscrewsareusedthescrewheadmustbesetbetween2.0mmminimumto2.5mmmaximumbelowthepanelsurface.UseJamesHardiecountersinkingdrillbittodrillholesinthepanel.Thedrillspeedmustbesetbetween400and560rpm.Speedsgreaterthanthiswillbreakthedrillbit.
7.5 FIXING DURABILITYThetypeofnailorscrewtobeusedforfixingtheRABBoard,battensandrainscreenmustbeselectedonthebasisofexposurezoneandnatureofuse.RefertotheinformationprovidedinTable2regardingtherequirementsfordifferentzones.AlsorefertoNZS3604forfurtherinformation.

8 Finishing8.1 GENERALAllsealantsmustmeettherelevantrequirementsoftheNZBC.TitanandExoTecFacadePanelsmustbekeptdryandundercoverwhilstinstoragepriortofixingandbeforecoatingcommences.Panelsmustbecoatedwithin90daysofinstallation.Anypenetrationsaswellassitecutsheetedgesmustbesealedwithanappropriatesealerthatiscompatiblewiththefinishingcoat.
8.2 SEALANTSApplicationanduseofsealantsmustcomplywithmanufacturer’sinstructionsandbecompatiblewithtexturecoating.Checkwithsealantmanufacturerpriortocoatingoversealants.Somesealantmanufacturersdonotrecommendcoatingovertheirproduct.
8.3 SCREW FILLERAllcountersunkscrewholesmustbefilledwithanepoxyfiller.Thecountersunkholesmustbecleananddrybeforetheyarefilled.Alsoensurethatthescrewsareperfectlytightandthereisnomovementbetweenthepanelandframingbeforetheholesarefilled.AllnexFairingCreamorasimilarproductisrecommendedforthispurpose.Alwaysrefertotheepoxymanufacturerrecommendationbeforeuse.
8.4 PAINTINGForpainting/coatingofTitanorExoTecFacadePanels,followtherecommendedspecificationsofarecognisedcoatingmanufacturer.Thegeneralrecommendationisonecoatofacrylicprimerandtwocoatsofhighbuildacrylicpaint(totalDFTnotlessthan150microns).Priortocoating,thesurfaceshouldbeexaminedtoensureitisclean,sound,dryandfreeofanydustandcontaminants.Ensureallepoxyfilledscrewholesaresandedtofinishflushwiththesurfaceofsheettoachieveasmoothfinish.PaintswithalowLRV(lightreflectancevalue)willabsorbmoresolarheatandcouldcausethecomponentsusedinthewalltoexpandandcontract.Thiscombinedwithglossypaintandwettimberusedattheconstructionstagecouldleadtoincreasedchancesoffastenerreadthrough,asiscommonwithanyotherbuildingmaterial.
9 MaintenanceItisresponsibilityoftheSpecifiertodeterminenormalmaintenancerequirementstomaintaintheeffectivenessofbuildingfacade.Theextentandnatureofmaintenancerequiredwilldependonthegeographicallocationandexposureofthebuilding.Asaguide,itisrecommendedthatthebasicnormalmaintenancetasksshallinclude,butnotbelimitedto:
• Washingdownexteriorsurfacesevery6-12months*
• Re-coatingexteriorprotectivefinishes**
• RegularinspectionandrepairifnecessaryoftheFacadepanels,sealants,ButylInsealstripsetc.
• Cleaningoutgutters,downpipesandoverflowpipesasrequired
• PruningbackvegetationwhichisclosetoortouchingthebuildingaswellasensuringtheNZBCgroundclearancerequirementsaremaintainedespeciallywheregardensareconcerned.
• Refillingthecountersunkholeswherethecracksstartappearinginthepaintfilmaroundepoxyfillersorwherefastenerreadthroughbecomessignificant.

JamesHardieNewZealandLimited("JamesHardie")warrantsforaperiodof15yearsfromthedateofpurchasethattheTitan™andExoTec™FacadePanel(the“Product”),willbefreefromdefectsduetodefectivefactoryworkmanshipormaterialsand,subjecttocompliancewiththeconditionsbelow,willberesistanttocracking,rotting,fireanddamagefromtermiteattackstotheextentsetoutinJamesHardie’srelevantpublishedliteraturecurrentatthetimeofinstallation.JamesHardiewarrantsforaperiodof15yearsfromthedateofpurchasethattheaccessoriessuppliedbyJamesHardiewillbefreefromdefectsduetodefectivefactoryworkmanshipormaterials.
NothinginthisdocumentshallexcludeormodifyanylegalrightsacustomermayhaveundertheConsumerGuaranteesActorotherwisewhichcannotbeexcludedormodifiedatlaw.
CONDITIONS OF WARRANTY: Thewarrantyisstrictlysubjecttothefollowingconditions:
a) JamesHardiewillnotbeliableforbreachofwarrantyunlesstheclaimantprovidesproofofpurchaseandmakesawrittenclaimeitherwithin30daysafterthedefectwouldhavebecomereasonablyapparentor,ifthedefectwasreasonablyapparentpriortoinstallation,thentheclaimmustbemadepriortoinstallation.
b) Thiswarrantyisnottransferable.
c) TheProductmustbeinstalledandmaintainedstrictlyinaccordancewiththerelevantJamesHardieliteraturecurrentatthetimeofinstallationandmustbeinstalledinconjunctionwiththecomponentsorproductsspecifiedintheliterature.Further,allotherproducts,includingcoatingandjointingsystems,appliedtoorusedinconjunctionwiththeProductmustbeappliedorinstalledandmaintainedstrictlyinaccordancewiththerelevantmanufacturer’sinstructionsandgoodtradepractice.
d) TheprojectmustbedesignedandconstructedinstrictcompliancewithallrelevantprovisionsofthecurrentNewZealandBuildingCode(“NZBC”),regulationsandstandards.
e) Theclaimant’ssoleremedyforbreachofwarrantyis(atJamesHardie’soption)thatJamesHardiewilleithersupplyreplacementproduct,rectifytheaffectedproductorpayforthecostofthereplacementorrectificationoftheaffectedproduct.
f) JamesHardiewillnotbeliableforanylossesordamages(whetherdirectorindirect)includingpropertydamageorpersonalinjury,consequentialloss,economiclossorlossofprofits,arisingincontractornegligenceorhowsoeverarising.WithoutlimitingtheforegoingJamesHardiewillnotbeliableforanyclaims,damagesordefectsarisingfromorinanywayattributabletopoorworkmanship,poordesignordetailing,settlementorstructuralmovementand/ormovementofmaterialstowhichtheProductisattached,incorrectdesignofthestructure,actsofGodincludingbutnotlimitedtoearthquakes,cyclones,floodsorothersevereweatherconditionsorunusualclimaticconditions,efflorescenceorperformanceofpaint/coatingsappliedtotheProduct,normalwearandtear,growthofmould,mildew,fungi,bacteria,oranyorganismonanyProductsurfaceorProduct(whetherontheexposedorunexposedsurfaces).
g) Allwarranties,conditions,liabilitiesandobligationsotherthanthosespecifiedinthiswarrantyareexcludedtothefullestextentallowedbylaw.
h) Ifmeetingaclaimunderthiswarrantyinvolvesre-coatingofProducts,theremaybeslightcolourdifferencesbetweentheoriginalandreplacementProductsduetotheeffectsofweatheringandvariationsinmaterialsovertime.
