You can make a differenceHi all,The 22nd of April has been marked globally as "Earth day" since 1970. This year too,
it passed by. "A birthday is fun, festivals mean a day off...what good is an Earth day
for a child?", you may ask. "And anyway what can I do? The adults are the ones who
pollute the waters, drive around in automobiles that generate greenhouse gases,
cut down trees and clear up rainforests in the name of development. I am just a
child and am powerless!
Many a time, being a child can be very frustrating but age should never come in the
way of following your heart! Severn Suzuki was 9 yrs old when she started the
Environmental Children's Organization (ECO). At the age of 12, she raised money
with members of ECO, to attend the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Along
with three other group members, she presented environmental issues from a
child's perspective at the summit. She was greatly applauded for a moving speech
to the delegates and has since been popularly known as "The Girl Who Silenced theWorld for 5 Minutes". This we are sure is just one of the countless inspiring
examples of people who consider age to be no more than a mere number! A policy
that we at Raindrops have taken to heart. As you may have noticed, All of our
articles only feature the creator's names - never their age!
Believe that the future starts with you...You can make a difference!

A story feature...story feature...Giggles and his Rainforest friends
The journey continues... Drop No: 4
Giggles tried not to think about being eaten by ocelots or jaguars
as they walked. They walked and walked and finally reached what Giggles
called one of the wonders of the world - The Amazon River! (If you
recollect, they were in that rainforest). Suddenly, they heard a soft
hissss. "ANACONDA!" howled Howler. "Ana what?" thought Giiggles. "Has
Howler gone mad?" But then, Howler bellowed, "Run!" and took Giggles by
the paw. Giggles looked back, but he couldn't see anything. Maybe Howler
really had gone mad. He began to giggle at that thought. But suddenly, a great
big snake slithered out of nowhere. "HISS! How dare you tresspass on my
property!" Before Giggles could react, the Anaconda
had wrapped both howler and him in her thick coils. She was just about tostrangle them, when a striped blur of colour zipped towards the Anaconda's
eyes. The Anaconda gave an angy hiss and retreated with scratches on her
eyes. Giggles turned around and saw his sister. "Hello!" she whispered.
Then, before Giggles could stammer out anything, Ginger smiled and
gestured towards a beautiful parrot. "That is Mayuri!" she whispered
again. (Ginger seemed to have picked up the habit of whispering.) Then
Ginger whispered a goodbye and streaked away. "Wait!", shouted Giggles,
rushing after her.

Geet and Uma ran into the police station shouting, "Thieves!thieves!" at the top of their
voices. "We don't believe it!" said the police officers when Geet and Uma told them the
whole story. "We can't be bothered with such childish nonsense!", they said and showed
them the door after warning them not to trouble them anymore with such tall tales. Geet
and Uma had no choice but to go home. They walked all the way back home and spent the
next half an hour cowering as their mother shouted about how worried she'd been, howshe had forced open the door of the old shed only to find two men who shoved her aside
and hurried away! (Geet and Uma let out shouts of horror at this!) Then they changed into
brighter clothes and were doodling on the floor, when the doorbell rang A lady walked in.
"No shred of evidence!" she said, rather haughtily. "Oh, dear," said their mother. "Then I
shall have to call a detective!" "That's it!" groaned Geet miserably. "We've failed!" Uma
wasn't listening though. As her mother picked up the phone, she stared at the lady. The
lady evidently thinking that she was not being watched, picked up a bottle and poured it's
contents into their mother's glass of coffee. After a while, Uma peered at the bottle. It
read : DEADLY POISON. "Oh no!" gasped Uma. She told Geet everything and theyswapped the two mugs of coffee while the lady was not looking. The lady picked up the
poisoned coffee and took a sip, just as Geet and Uma dashed out of the room.

Indias first adventurer on National Geographic channel, wildlife expert and
herpetologist Gerard Gerry Martin has been wild at heart since the times he wasa kid .He grew up in a farmhouse, surrounded by animals and nature. Today he
shares his love for adventure with children and educates them about nature and
animals through camps and workshops. His camps involve a structured
introduction to nature and the wild, where children from the city learn about
survival, the dos and don'ts in the outdoors and get hands-on experiences in
nature and leave with a certain connect with the environment. This time, we
present a snap-shot of a day out at Gerrys farm located in the outskirts of
Bangalore - South India.

The children and I spoke about
rain and rainforests as the mossgardens help them 'see' a little of
why we need pebbles at the
bottom, some soil and humus on
the top before we plant the moss.
Another interesting conversation
that can be had with the kids
regarding their moss gardens is
that of the 'environment'. Letthem experiment with the environment
in their jars. Dry it up, flood it, etc. They can watch the effects and that can
then translate to a conversation on something as relevant as climate change!
Gerry says...
To assemble moss garden: In
a glass jar, put gravel in the
bottom, then add the
mixture of soil and crushed
dry leaves. Gently place the
moss on top. Sprinkle some
water and close the lid of
the jar .place it in the
bathroom or any other area
with high humidity and
enjoy your special garden.
Don't forget to take care
of it!

All too soon it's time to go.Meet you next time with another project!

Put out your drawing books,
get out your paper.
Sharpen your pencils,
hold on to your eraser.
Lay down your scissors,
bring in your tape.
Now, what are we going to make ? How about a guitar,
or a noisy drum.
Maybe doing up a photo-frame,
with some super sticking gum!
A picture of a wizard,
or maybe a witch,
How about an ugly frog,
sitting in a ditch!

First clean the tennis ball . Dip the newspaper bits into the milky glue and stick
them onto the ball. Put multiple layers till the ball is completely dry. When dry,
paint the ball (we used blue to look like Earth). Make some aliens out of self-
hardening clay and stick them on the ball. Make sure the ball is upright till the
aliens are dry. Then paint the aliens. Display your alien infested planet right
away!

I envision a religion called Prathate Shanti. This means World Peace. The goal
of my religion is that every single person in the world will know what will have
experienced peace and will know what it means. I know that this seems very far-
fetched, but the reason for this goal is because if the world were peaceful, it
would be a much better place. There would be no homicides, wars, etc. Violence
would be a far-fetched, exotic thing. People would not even know what violence
meant. All around the world there are many people who have been
terrorized by extremist groups in the name
of re l i g i on . Th ey deserve peace
for everything they h a v e g o n e
through. There a r e h that happen there
that we can only imagin
think that if we gave th
p e o p l e a c h a n c e t o
experience a day when they
h a v e n o worries, and
dont have to b e w o r r i e d
about getting k i l l e d b y
members of an extremist group,
they would be very happy.
The pr incip le on which I am basing my
entire religion is called The Three ways to
Peace. The first idea is that All pain comes through a
loss of mindset. If you want knowledge of perfect peace, your mind must be
disciplined and you must not waver in your quest. When you spread peace, your
knowledge will come to you. You must always remain steadfast and true to
yourself. The way to a perfect world is not to be selfish, and if you know something
that others dont, teach it to them. That is the method that you should follow
whenever you are practicing Prathate Shanti.
My second idea is that if you spread peace, you will understand and practise it
better. God will be pleased that you are reading his teachings because the
language of God is peace. For isnt God supposed to embody all ideal qualities?
And isnt peacefulness one of these qualities? If God sees you spread his language,

there will be a chance, according to karma, that something good around, comes
around. This is another thing that I think should be followed in my religion.
My third idea is that the way to attain peace of mind, body, and soul is by notprocrastinating. If you procrastinate, you will always have something weighing on
your mind. When this happens, you will not be able to enjoy any good things that are
happening to you during the day. If you just finish everything up, you will be able to
enjoy all the good things that life gives to you. Another concept is that you should
never lie. It will weigh on your mind just like procrastinating does; however, this
will be worse. Some key vocabulary words that I think you should know about my
religion are Missionaries, Prathate, and Shanti. Missionaries are people that
spread a religion across a wide area, usually prompted by a ruler who follows the
said religion. The reason that I am mentioning missionaries in my essay is becausethey are the people that spread peace, thus the name of my religion, World Peace.
I would love to one day actually bring this religion into play. I think that it could
really help the world and that people would welcome it as a new religion, especially
those people that people would welcome it as a new religion, especially those
people that are under the ruthless influence of extremists groups. It would be
fairer towards them. We experience peace every day, while they almost don't
experience it at all. Prathate Shanti will hopefully one day ,become a religion that
it all started in Mr.Lorenzanas class!

WISDOM
Some people learn by fist and gun;
But the wise learn through words.Have wisdom, but not all under the sun;
Care for everything, cats and birds.
How have I grieved, how have I wept;
The age of ten, I was deceived
Of those memories, big are kept
O! learn, learn fore too late;
Anger can destruct;
Its the devils bait;
Destroys a mans faith which he does construct.

A drink anyone?
Mmm...Cool& refreshing!
Hmmph! don't wet my feathers!
This month we give you a glimpse into the world of a bird
maniac...err...lover! He is John and on his small terrace
apartment he has two roosters, many pigeons and a parrot
called Muthazhagi (for obvious reasons we will just call himMuthu from now on!). The roosters and pigeons had
separate cozy pens on the terrace. The roosters were quite
shy and refused to pose for pictures until John had to wet
their feathers to prevent them flying around. The damp
and sorry looking roosters then kept protesting with loud
"Cock-a-doodledo" s for the rest of our visit. The pigeons
were offered lots of food in return for their constant
chattering company. We took a break and went indoorswhere Muthu was sitting on a table watching me out of the corner of his eye. I set
my glass of cool mineral water on the table. After a while, Muthu went up to it and
put his beak into it and began to drink. He used his talons to help him sit on the rim
of my glass and kept going round and round the rim without taking his beak out of
the water!
When asked about how he came about having such unusual pets, John said, "Oh. I
tried the usual pets like a squirrel (?), a dog and a cat but that didn't work out. So I
decided to have birds instead!" Makes sense?!
FYI:
Muthazhagi roughly translates to "Pearl Beauty

Welcome visitors!
Gerald Durrell, world-famous naturalist and zoo-keeper was born in India in 1925 and he
spent his childhood in India, England and in the island of Corfu. He told his mother that
he wanted to have his own zoo when he was just six! In 1963, he founded the New Jersey
Wildlife Preservation Trust and located his zoo in Jersey, Channel Islands, off the coastof England. He wrote a large number of books in which he describes in interesting and
amusing detail his experiences with animals. Gerald Durrell passed away in 1995, but he
lives on in the hearts and minds of animal lovers world-wide. He demonstrated that each
and every species, be it an ant or a bear, is important in the cycle of nature. This is a very
funny anecdote extracted from his book - The Arks Anniversary...
In those early years [when the zoo was being set up], there were many bizarre happenings
and even my mother was subjected to the sort of episode, which can occur only when you
are unwise enough to live in a zoo. Our two half-grown chimpanzees Chumley and Lulu
had discovered, after much research, that interlink wire if you could find a free end-
could be unraveled like an old sweater and almost as quickly.
This they proceeded to do to the wires on their cage one afternoon when no one was
around. My mother, having just settled herself with a pot of tea in front of the television,
heard a bang on the front door. Puzzled, she went to open it and found Chumley and
Lulu on the front stairs. It was obvious from their demeanour that they had come to
visit, were delighted to find her at home and were in no doubt that she would greet them
with the same enthusiasm with which they were greeting her. My mother measured four
feet eight inches high and the chimps came up to her waist. Not one to lose her head in acrisis, nothing daunted, she invited the apes in as she would honoured guests, sat them
down on a sofa and opened a large box of chocolates and a tin of biscuits. While the
chimps were raucously feeding on this manna from heaven, my mother quietly phoned
downstairs and reported the whereabouts of the truants.
The fact that the apes could have seriously
injured her did not occur to her and
when I remonstrated with her for
letting them into the flat she was
puzzled. But dear, she said,
they came to tea, and she
added thoughtfully, and
they had jolly sight
better manners than
some of the people
you have had up
here !
What well-manneredguests!

Falooda Facts
Falooda or Faluda is a popular beverage
in the Indian subcontinent made
primarily by mixing rose syrup with
vermicelli and subja seeds along with
either milk or water. Falooda is an adaption of the Persian dessert Faloodeh and was
brought to the Indian subcontinent by the Mughal Kingdom.
The main ingredient of Falooda is Subja or Takmaria seeds. They are the seeds of a variety
of basil plant (Osimum basilicum) which is found all over India. The seeds dry on the plant
or are dried in the sun. They are tiny black and tear drop shaped. When dropped into
water they first develop a whitish grey bloom and then the skin swells up quickly. The
outer coating is translucent and pale grey so the black seed within can be easily seen.
Once they get to this stage, they are ready to be eaten. They have no aroma or taste but astrange pleasant combination of contrasting textures. The outer fur is slippery and soft
whereas the centre is crunchy.
Subja seeds may not be very easy to find but look for them in Indian grocery shops. A little
amount puffs up to a lot and will go a long way so about 100gms of seeds seems to last for
ever. Store in a dry airtight jar for up to a year.
Subja seeds are considered to be a "coolant" for the body in the Indian system of
medicine - Ayurveda. It's supposed to aid digestion in the hot summer months. So Falooda
is not just delicious, it is also good for you!
You can experiment with them as a garnish for other puddings, fruit salad or even clear
drinks. They need no cooking.
Seeds or Frog's eggs?
Beware Folks...Foody is planning a devilish concoction of lizard
slime and frogs eggs for Halloween! Yuck you say?
But once you get past the looks, it should be quite
delicious!

To Bee or not to Bee
Grandpa Tidbit's Blog
Hi Kids,
In this fast paced world, we see everyone around us
extremely busy. This reminds me of BEES. They are
supposed be very busy creatures - you must have heard theexpression - busy as a bee!
I would like to share some interesting things about bees. One
afternoon, we left home to do our grocery shopping. When we
returned in the evening and opened our window, we were surprised to
find a large bee-hive adjacent to our window. It was not there when we
left in the afternoon. See how quickly they build their homes! Bees generally
do not trouble us during the day, unless provoked of course. But after dusk,
once the lights are switched on, they swarm into the room searching for the source of
light.
I had another interesting and painful experience with
bees. I had been to my village for a temple function,
where about 40 to 50 people had gathered under a tall,
huge banyan tree in front of the temple. Below the
tree a Homa Kundam had been set up. A Homa
Kundam is an altar-type setting where Hindu priests
perform rituals with fire. It generally has mats for the
priests to sit on around a fire basin where they
perform the rituals. Well, everything was quiet until
the holy fire was started and smoke rose high from it.
Suddenly as if from thin air, wild bees swarmed around
the entire area attacking all the people present. There
was a huge beehive on top of the tree, which nobody
noticed and as the smoke rose, the bees were
provoked. People started running in all directions to
save themselves.
Unfortunately, I was standing right next to the holy fire and even before I could start
running, the bees covered by head, face and neck. They stung me in all these areas and by
the time I reached a nearby house, where people helped remove the bee stingers from my
body, my head, face and neck were swollen due to the toxins of the bee sting and I had
almost lost consciousness. I was still feeling nauseated when I called on the doctor with
the help of some relatives. He was shocked and greatly surprised to see me alive, as
generally the toxin from bee stings on the head of a person goes directly into the blood
stream causing instantaneous death. Perhaps it was divine intervention that saved me that
day! The trauma of the whole episode lasted several weeks when even a mosquito bite
would send shivers through my body.
The bees were just acting on instinct but the moral of the story is let the Bee be and the
Bee will let you be! Play safe this summer and have fun.
Affectionately,
Grandpa

What's the buzz?
Some facts about Honey Bees
You read about how grandpa got bitten by
bees and survived miraculously. Well, for
the bees who stung him, there can be no
such miracle. They would have just died! A
bee attacks by driving its stinger deep into
the enemy's flesh. But once the stinger is in,
the bee cannot pull it out. In trying, thestinger is torn from it's body, leaving the poor bee dying.
In effect, it gives up its life defending his hive. When humans do that, we
hail them as heroes!
Many of the cells in a honey-comb are filled with the sweet nectar that the worker
bees gather from flowers. Other worker bees fan the nectar by beating (or fanning)
their wings rapidly. This continuous fanning evaporates the water content,
thickening and concentrating the liquid and making the honey sweeter. Yummm...
The bees communicate with each other by - dancing! Entomologists studying beeshave figured out that the bees use special dance forms like the "round dance" and
"waggle dance" to tell their fellow bees how far the nectar is and in which direction.
Bees also communicate by buzzing. Each bee hive has its own special high pitched
hum called "the song of the hive". With singing and dancing, bees seem to be the "arty"
types.
Without honey bee pollination, the food we eat could decrease by 1/3rd. Foods such
as apples, watermelons, squash, strawberries and many other fruits and vegetables
are pollinated by honey bees. But seems like not everyone wants bees around - and we are not talking about the
ones who have been stung!
US tangerine growers have asked beekeepers to buzz off! Tangerines and other
normally seedless mandarins are self-pollinating. But if bees cross-pollinate the crop
with the pollen of a seeded orange, lemon or grapefruit, mandarins develop
undesirable seeds. Almond trees on the other hand, need lots of bees to pollinate.
However once the pollination season is over, beekeepers relocate hives to have
access to natural food and citrus (the bee-keepers claim) is part of that. The conflictarises because on one side, more and more consumers prefer seedless grapes,
watermelons and tangerines - on the other hand the struggling bee colonies look for
winter food. Tough one to resolve!

Barbara the balloon girl always sold great balloons. One morning, the taxi that
she took to reach home broke down and she couldn't return home. So she
took some of her balloons, tied them with a string and then held on tight asthey rose into the air. Up, up and up they went, until finally they were floating
above her house. Then she quickly untied the strings and as they slowly lost air
she drifted down, down and down until finally they landed on the front yard of
the house. Barbara brought all the balloons in, filled them with air and tied
them with new thread. Then they all enjoyed a good supper.

lightbulbs, insulating an attic, and keeping the hogs from takinglong showers. Other activities include Hog and Seek and an energy
scavenger hunt. The games are very exciting but I found it
difficult to finish them within the time-limit. I was aslo upset that
even though you create an id
for yourself, there is no way
to retrieve it the next time.
In other words, your game is
not saved and you have to
start from the beginning every
time! Anyway, the web-site
also offers useful information
on how you can conserve
energy in your home. Play the
games and become your
home's Energy Hog
Buster too!

A greenhouse effect on planet Venus has raised the temperature there andmade it impossible to survive in. The same thing could happen to planet Earth
because of global warming. Polar bears journey far from their home when the
ice melts. They are forced to swim long distances across the ocean and as a
result, the number of cubs they get are dwindling. We have to save our planet
so we can live and grow. So Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and pass the message
on to eveyone you know!

Unearthly facts!
Carbon Footprint is a measure of the
impact human activities have on the
environment in terms of the amount of
green house gases produced, measured in
units of carbon dioxide. You can
calculate your own Carbon
Footprint by entering values into
a special calculator (availableonline). These numbers include
your electricity, gas, oil and
car usage over a years time.
The footprint analogy is used
because it suggests something
we leave behind for
generations to come. So tread
lightly on the Earth. Leave
minimal footprints! TAKE CARE OF THE EARTH
The Earth
provides enough to satisfy
every mans need, but not every
mans greed!
