INTRODUCTION

This booklet is one of a series that record all available information on Official Railway Postcards. These are the picture postcards thatwere used, sold, or given away by the various railway companies. All known cards from 1896 to 1947 are recorded, for all the BritishIsles, together with the French railways poster cards. Railways 15” or less are excluded. Details of reprints, print variations, in fact anyrecordable differences are all included. The printer of the card is given where this can be identified, with the “big four”,McCorquodale, Photochrom, Tuck and Valentine accounting for a very high proportion.These listings update the complete listings found in The Official Railway Postcard Book, but in more portable format, and should beused in conjunction with that book for reference to illustrations.

A number of conventions are followed throughout these checklists:

Information in square brackets [ ] is descriptive to aid identification, and is not on the card;Titles are given in full except for a few very long ones, indicated by…..;Punctuation and errors are given exactly as on the card;Coloured cards are indicated at the start of the set or group of cards where they occur;/ in the title means two (or more) pictures, // indicates there is also a picture on the address side;5is used in the checkboxes [ ] to indicate confirmed cards;Elsewhere the presence of a checkbox assumes the existence of the card;(V) indicates a vertical (portrait) format card;Where it can be identified the name of the artist is given, in italics;Dates given are either known publication dates or earliest noted postal use (indicated ‘by’);

There is still much to be discovered, and new information is always welcome. Not all the cards listed have been seen, and there may bedifferences in titles that should be recorded. Photocopies are especially welcome, and avoid any confusion over descriptions.

CALEDONIAN RAILWAY (CR)

NOTE: Not all the cards in sets 35 and 43 and no cards in sets 30 or 31 have been seen, so some titles may be inaccurate as they aretaken from the 1907 list, which does not always agree with what is on the cards. The cards listed for sets 20 & 21 could be reversed asthe list just shows each as 6 views of Rothesay. No titles are given in the 1907 list for set 17, and the cards listed are assumed to belonghere.

"Glosso" is the name given to the glossy sepia cards, as per the C.R. list; these were not cheap cards, 3d for 4,4d for 6, and 6d for 8. Occasionally a card is found with the gloss finish missing, (a production fault?). The "Glosso" cards are brownback, "Printed in Germany", unless otherwise noted.

VALENTINE CARDS - Backs and print variations.There is some duplication of titles within sets as well as with the single cards, and the following notes aim to make identification easier.The circular version of the Company crest used on the Valentine cards is referred to as the seal.

Four distinct back types are identified;a. Seal. For INLAND postage... Valentines Series (on most). Sets 5, 8-15. Various colours;b. Two seals. Sets 8 & 9. Blue;c. Seal. Printed in Great Britain. No Valentines or For Inland... Sets 20 (or 21). Turquoise;d. Seal. No Valentines. Printed.. or For Inland... Sets 35-37 and cards sold singly. Blue.

With sets 5, 8-15, all known variations are recorded, showing back colour for type "a" and style of title print.

Most have the railway name or route details in brackets following, and often in a different style to the title; there may be a full stop afterthe main title, and may be one inside the brackets; "small" indicates lettering about half the size of the card title. Blue and turquoise canbe hard to distinguish unless you have one of each in front of you.

Valentine numbers are given where known, but may not appear on all issues of a card.

NATIONAL SERIESAre by Millar and Lang of Glasgow (sets 1-4, 6 & 7), by May 1905.The "National" Series appears on the Red Seal (1907) issue, but is only on Blue Crest cards where noted in the list.
