It attracted a total of 14 entries from all parts of the organisation, vying for four major awards, the Asset Management Group Award, the Service Delivery Group Award, the Corporate Support Groups Award and the Grand Champion Award. The Awards were announced at a presentation dinner after the Safety Convention on 19 May 2009. The Grand Champion and winner of the Service Delivery Group Award was the Compliance and Consistency Unit of Customer Service for its solution to the consistent and effective management and delivery of safety information to all station personnel. The Asset Management Award was won by the Construction Management Unit for its welding crate designed to significantly reduce the risk of manual handling injuries by track workers. The Corporate Support Groups Award was won by the Network Rules Division for its Safeworking Self Assessment on-line quiz, which allows employees and contractors to test their safeworking knowledge. Finalists included Doug Gannon from Infrastructure Division for his level crossing lighting system, the Heavy Plant & Equipment Unit for their solar-powered ballast wagon, and the Customer Service Division for its Incident Response Training package. The uptake by the business of the innovations represented in these awards is indicative of the very high standard of the entries received. This competition will be pursued on the basis that it produces a strong awareness of safety issues in a risk- based context, and encourages staff to exercise their ingenuity and talent for the benefit of the organisation and its customers.
