One such great visionary was Rai Bahadur Gujar Mal Modi. A noble man, blessed

with tremendous enterprise and foresight, who often achieved much more than he

conceived. For us, he was, still is and will always continue to be the greatest source of

path of excellence laid by him.

In 1932, Rai Bahadur Gujar Mal Modi laid the

foundation of the sugar plant at Begumbad in Uttar

Pradesh. While this hamlet may have served as a

gateway to his many ambitions, his generous sense

of commitment to society at large conjured up visions

of sprawling townships, schools, hospitals, shopping

arcades, playgrounds, places of worship and

spiritual growth as well as other social amenities. In

other words, gains from an ever growing business

group. A group which would become the pride of the

nation and a role model for others to emulate.

one of India's modern alcohol processing

units established in 1959, the distillery has

kept pace with advances in technology &

The company SBEC Bioenergy Limited has

been established to implement the co-

generation project for generation and supply

of power to the SBEC Sugar Limited for in-

house consumption and suppply of excess

power to the state electricity grid. The

company has already entered into a long term

conversion agreement with SBEC Sugar for

providing power and steam to the sugar unit

against the supply of bagasse and water from

the sugar plant.

The techno logy for bagasse -based

co-generation for the export of power is well

known and commercially practised in

several countries, notably the United States,

Mauritius and Dominican Republic. The

gestation period for such projects is less than

that of conventional thermal or hydro power

projects.Power and steam are the two critical inputs

vital to any process industry. For industries

that have a continuous requirement of both

steam and power, co-generation is the most

economica l op t ion . Th i s i s where

In most sugar mills, the associated co-

generation is seen as a by-product whose

Bihar sponge Iron Ltd. (BSIL) is an industrial

giant with investments worth Rs. 1.85 billion.

The company was promoted in the joint sector

by Bihar State Industrial Development Corp.

Ltd. (BSIDC), Modi Group, German Investment

and Development Company (DEG) and

I n t e r na t i ona l F i nance Corpo ra t i on

(Washington), in technical collaboration with

Lurgi Metallurgy GmbH, Germany, for the

manufacture of Direct Reduce Iron (Sponge

Iron) from iron ore and coal. The plant is based

on Lurgi’s SL/RN (coalbased) process and is

designed to produce 150,000 tonnes of

Sponge Iron per annum.

BSIL is the first commercial sponge iron plant in

India and is also recognised as the most

efficient coal-based plant in India.

The plant is located at Umesh Nagar, Chandil,

in district Singhbhum, which is 30 kms from

Jamshedpur. Chandil is a known backward

iron ore and non-coking coal available

abundantly in the vicinity. The implementation

of this massive project started in June 1986 and

was completed in record time. The plant started

commercial production in July 1989.

Sponge Iron is used as a raw material for

making steel in electric arc furnaces and

induction furnaces, substi tuting and

supplementing indigenous and imported

scrap.

The journey of Modi-Mundipharma started in

the year 1993 through a 50:50 JV between the

privately held Mundipharma group belonging

to Sackler's family (known as Purdue Pharma in

the USA, Napp Laboratories in the UK and

Mundipharma in Europe) and Mr. Umesh K.

Modi of the Modi Group of Industries, a

leading business conglomerate in India.

The pharmaceutical operations had started

much earlier in the year 1982 with Win-

Medicare in collaboration with Sterling Drugs

of USA.In 1989, Sterling Drug was sold to

Eastman Kodak in the USA and this

relationship came to an end.

In 1990, Win-Medicare became a licensee of

Mundipharma for Betadine and in 1993 this

relationship got further strengthened with a

Joint Venture company Modi-Mundipharma.

Win-Medicare became the extended strong

arm of Modi-Mundipharma marketing

Betadine range and fostering all other in

licensed global products along with its

indigenous formulations. Modi-Mundipharma

gained a strong hold in the Indian market with

Mundipharma's Continus technology, a

differentiated and unique NDDS endorsed by

medical practitioners world over across 70

countries.

Driven by the desire to maintain leadership

The cosmetics business was started in the year

1995 through collaboration between the Modi-

Mundipharma (74%) and Revlon, Inc. USA

(26%). Modi-Revlon was the first company in

India to introduce the concept of Beauty

advisors in retail stores and presently has more

than 2000 beauty advisors. With a distribution

network of around 30,000 stores Modi Revlon

has been growing consistently since its

inception.

Modi-Revlon Pvt. Ltd has now ventured in Sri

Lanka with its wholly owned subsidiary called

Revlon Lanka Private Limited. Revlon

Lanka Pvt. Ltd is the first International Plant of

the group catering to the needs of Sri Lanka. In

addition to Sri Lanka, Revlon Lanka

Private Limited will also cater to Pakistan &

Bangladesh through its subsidiary companies

called Revlon Pakistan & Revlon Bangladesh

Revlon is the first international brand of color
