Richard Egan, Ragtime Pianist

Richard Egan grew up on a hilltop above the Missouri River floodplain and as a teenager he found that ragtime's sounds spoke a language he came to love. Richard took piano lessons from ages 8 to 12 from a local church organist and then avoided piano for two years, until he was introduced to Scott Joplin's music in the film "The Sting" in 1974.

With the support of Trebor Tichenor and his daughter Virginia Tichenor (who played here in Tulsa with husband Marty Eggers in April), he performed at ragtime festivals on the Goldenrod Showboat on the St Louis levee for a number of years until 2001 when the boat was moved.

Along the way, in addition to Classic ragtime of Scott Joplin, James Scott and Joseph Lamb, he discovered the folk ragtime music of Brun Campbell (The Ragtime Kid), Blind Boone, Tom Turpin, Trebor Tichenor and other Midwestern performers. In 1993 he published a book of transcriptions of Brun Campbell's rags, many of which were only know on recordings made by Campbell in the 1960s. He also transcribed, and had published, one of Blind Boone's most famous pieces, Camp Meeting No. 1. In 2012 he teamed with Larry Karp, author of three mystery books involving ragtime performers, to present a highly acclaimed music/lecture on Brun Campbell at the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival in Sedalia, MO.

In addition to being a performer, Egan has been active in promoting and expanding the St. Louis ragtime scene. He holds an A.B. and M.A. in geography from the University of Missouri (Columbia). In his day job he is a cartographer for the Federal Government.
