What is Radio Broadcasting?

The single wireless transmission over radio waves of which intend to reach a wide audience.

“Radio is becoming a generic term for audio entertainment supplied by broadcast frequency, satellite, internet streaming, mobile phones, and portable digital media players via podcasts, some of which come from traditional radio companies and still others that are the product of technology innovators (Green, et al., 2005).

Why is it Important?

• Its free; there’s no subscription or expensive receiver.• Globally there are billions of AM or FM receivers. In the

US alone there are 800 million radios.• Radio technology plays a huge role within global

communications for populations in political, economic, and social transition.

What are its Forms?

• Can be within Syndication or Simulcast• Syndication: the sale of the right to broadcast without

going through a broadcast network.• Simulcast: the broadcasting of programs/events across

more than one medium.• Audio can be broadcasted via Satellite Radio and

Internet Radio.

• Satellite Radio: radio service broadcasted from satellites primarily to cars.

• Internet Radio: audio service transmitted via internet; (via streaming media on internet).

• Signal Types: Analog Audio and Digital Radio.• Analog Audio: recording of analog signals stored as a

wave in or on the media for later playback.• Digital Audio: technology that records, stores, and

reproduces sound by encoding an audio signal in digital form instead of analog.

History Time

• Italian Guglielmo Marconi invented the radio.• Edwin Howard Armstrong made lasting contributions to radio and

electronics technology.• It experienced its golden age in the 1930’s and 1940’s.• “It was the medium for live entertainment and news broadcasts, but

the enthusiastic embrace of television after WW2 put radio on a technology path for the next 60 years that has been dominated by a music box role.”

• One of the biggest innovations is radio was when FM stereo broadcasting emerged in 1961.

• The oldest commercial radio station began broadcasting in AM in the year of 1920.

• Amplitude modulation • Frequency modulation.• AM varies in the amplitude of the signal • FM varies in the frequency of the signal

How Does Technology Affect Radio Broadcasting?

• New technologies substitute for radio.• Delivery competition from satellite digital audio radio

services (SDARS).• Newly developed voices for communities: lower power

FM services.• New digital audio broadcasting transmission models that

are already compatible with FM and AM.

What Kind of Competition Does Radio Broadcasting Have?

• Internet Radio: Pandora; Spotify• Digital Audio Files: Digital audio refers to technology

that records, stores, and reproduces sound by encoding an audio signal in digital form instead of analog form.

• Podcast: a multimedia digital file made available on the Internet for downloading to a portable media player, computer, etc.

From My Experience

• A lot more goes into radio broadcasting than you think… What it entails:

• Having a topic ready• Maintaining a conversational tone• Having your playlist ready• Learning the switch board• Microphone Checks• Knowing the different laws and principles• And much, much more….

What to Expect From Radio Broadcasting in the Future…

• Company ownership and investments in technology.• The FCC estimates there will be nearly 800 million

radios in US households, private and commercial vehicles, and commercial establishments.

• Radio programming will shift away from music and back to its roots as a program formatted medium. The programming changes will result in fewer job opportunities in programming and on-air operation, in turn the effort to increase revenue will result in the effort to hire more sales personnel.
