To secure loads, use the cargo tie-downloops inside the cargo bed area. If yourtruck is equipped with bed rails, do notattempt to use them to secure loads,as they are for appearance only. Usingthe bed rails as a load anchor not onlycan damage them but may cause theload to loosen, possibly causing injury.See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Two-Tier Loading and OptionalBed Extender

You can create an upper load platformby positioning four 2x6 wooden planksacross the width of the pickup box.Insert the planks into the pickup boxdepressions (shown above), allowing for at least a 3/4-inch (2-cm) bearingsurface on each side of the plank.

Cargo bed depressions for two-tier loadingEnsure that the upper-tier load issecurely tied down, with its center ofgravity in a zone over the rear axle.

See Section 4 of your Owner Manual.

Note: An accessory bed extender, available from your dealer, provideseven more flexibility for longer loads.

Automatic Locking Differential(if equipped)

Your axle may be equipped with anautomatic locking differential feature thathelps increase traction when traveling atspeeds less than 20 mph. Once engaged, both rear wheels will“lock” and rotate at the same speed, improving vehicle traction. If one wheelhas poor traction, such as when on ice, snow or mud, power will be transferredto the wheel with better traction.

Four-Wheel Drive System(if equipped)

With four-wheel drive, you can sendpower to all four wheels for extra trac-tion. The controls are located on theinstrument panel, to the right of thesteering wheel.

Four-Wheel Drive Modes2s (2HI): This setting is used for moststreet and highway driving conditions. The front axle is not engaged in thismode.N (Neutral): Shift the vehicle’s transfercase to N only when towing your vehicle. 4s (4HI): This setting engages the frontaxle to provide extra traction on snowyor icy roads and during most off-road situations. Do not drive on pavement infour-wheel drive for long periods, as itmay cause premature powertrain wear.

4t (4LO): This setting engages thefront axle and sends maximum power toall four wheels for extremely low-tractionconditions. You might choose 4LO fordriving off-road in sand, mud or deepsnow and climbing or descending steephills.Indicator lights in the buttons showwhich setting is currently selected.Shift from 2HI to 4HI • Press the 4HI button while driving at

any speed.

Shift from 4HI to 2HI• Press the 2HI button while driving at

any speed.Shift from 2HI or 4HI to 4LO • Stop the vehicle or drive at 3 mph

(5 km/h) or slower, with the transmis-sion in Neutral (automatic transmis-sion) or the clutch pedal depressed (manual transmission). The preferred method for shifting into 4LO is to have the vehicle moving at just under 3 mph (5 km/h).

• Press and release the 4LO button and wait for the 4LO indicator light to stop flashing and remain illuminated before shifting the transmission into gear or releasing the clutch pedal.

Note: The indicator lights can flash attwo speeds. Fast flashing means theconditions were not met to make thedesired shift; typically, the vehicle wasgoing too fast, the automatic transmis-sion was not in Neutral, or the clutchpedal was not fully depressed. Slowflashing means the shift is in progress. If the transfer case is unable to make arequested shift, the indicator light willflash slowly for 30 seconds and thenreturn to the last setting.

• After the transfer case has shifted out of Neutral, the indicator light willgo out.

Shift from 4LO to 2HI or 4HI • Stop the vehicle or drive at 3 mph

(5 km/h) or slower, with the transmis-sion in Neutral (automatic transmis-sion) or the clutch pedal depressed (manual transmission). The preferred method for shifting out of 4LO is to have the vehicle moving at just under 3 mph (5 km/h).

• Press and release the 2HI or 4HI button and wait for the 2HI or 4HI indicator light to stop flashing and remain illuminated before shifting the transmission into gear or releasing the clutch pedal.

Shift the transfer case into or out ofNeutral

Shifting into Neutral• Set the parking brake.• Turn the ignition to Run but leave the

engine off.• Press the regular brake pedal and

shift the transmission in Neutral (N),

Note: When shifting into and out of 4LO,it is normal to hear and feel positive gearfeedback, typically referred to as “clunk”(noise) and seat “bump” (feel). If a shift ismade with the vehicle stopped, the indica-tor light may remain flashing slowly. It maybe necessary to shift the transmissionmomentarily into Reverse and Drive (auto-matic transmission) or Reverse and 1st(manual transmission) and rock the vehi-cle slightly to get the light to come on fully.

Note: Shifting the transfer case toNeutral can cause your vehicle to rolleven if the transmission is in Park (P) orin gear. You or someone else could beseriously injured. Be sure to set theparking brake before placing the trans-fer case in Neutral.

Tire Pressure Monitor

The Tire Pressure Monitor alerts youwhen a significant reduction in pressureoccurs in one or more of your vehicle’stires by illuminating the (low tirepressure) warning light on the instru-ment panel. The low tire pressure warn-ing light will remain on until you correctthe tire pressure.A CHECK TIRE PRESSURE messagemay also appear on the DIC. Correcting the Tire PressureWhen the low tire pressure warning lightilluminates, you must fill the tire to theproper tire inflation pressure. The Tireand Loading Information label on thedriver’s door shows the correct inflationpressure for the tires when they’re cold.“Cold” means your vehicle has been sit-ting for at least three hours or driven nomore than one mile. You can temporarily remove the DICmessage by acknowledging it with yourDIC controls. However, at the next vehi-cle startup, the DIC message will reap-pear if the tire pressure has not beencorrected. You may notice during cooler conditionsthat the low tire pressure warning lightwill appear when the vehicle is first start-ed and then turn off as you start to drivethe vehicle. This could be an early indi-cator that your tire pressures are gettinglow and need to be inflated to the properpressure.

See Section 5 of your Owner Manual.

Note: The Tire Pressure Monitor canalert you about low tire pressure, but itdoesn’t replace normal monthly tiremaintenance.

Traction Control System(2WD models)

If the Traction Control System (TCS)detects wheelspin at one or both rearwheels, the system will reduce enginepower and/or upshift the transmission to help limit wheelspin. When the TCS is working, during which the DriverInformation Center displays LO TRAC,you may notice reduced engine performance. The TCS is automatically turned oneach time the vehicle is started.Under mostdriving condi-tions, youshould leavethe TCS turnedon. But, if your vehicleever gets stuckin sand, mud or snow and rocking thevehicle is required, you may want to turnoff the TCS. See Section 4 of yourOwner Manual for important details. To turn off the TCS:• Press the TCS button located on the

instrument panel just above the radio. The indicator light will illuminate whenthe TCS is turned off.

• Press the button again to turn the TCS back on. The indicator light will turn off.

See Section 4 of your Owner Manual.

• Release the parking brake.• You may start the engine and shift

the transmission to the desired position.
