Creativity is like a plant. It needs to be watered with care, so that it grows on you!

We, the Radical Baboons celebrate those who keep their creativity alive with passion. It is a friendly hub for artists of all kinds. We will be featuring three artists each month, whose stories are yet not told to many. Our aim is to provide their inspiring journeys with more support and Glück! As a journey is not always just smiles and chuckles; it has its own wax and wane. And often when we start one, the immediate feedback is usually repulsive. But keeping at it and staying happy is the mantra. Those who succeed at it should be remembered.

So, folks! Keep your plants growing and mesmerize us more!

RADICAL BABOONS celebrates and supports the young creative minds. It is an effort to help them reach out to a

greater audience while also echoing the positive message ‘proud being an artist’.

We heartily thank the team who contributed to this issue. Starting with the amazing AVI SHANKAR AIN, a painter

from Bangladesh; to the very talented duo- Arvind and Alok and their creative collaboration named PINCH; and last but not the least the pretty lady with her stunning paper craft,

Rashmeet Kaur.

We also thank Amrita Barua for her assistance in the

making of this issue.

The MAN…

Brought up in an artistically inclined family, Avi naturally found his way into the visual arts. Further he was educated in the leading art schools of both Bangladesh and India. Even though he travels ex-tensively, Avi is mostly based in Dhaka and presently have a long list of shows lined up in the country. His first solo, ‘Serene Dream and reality’ at the ‘La Galerie Alliance Françoise de Dhaka’ was ex-hibited last December. What matters in Avi’s works is not just his outstanding skill to represent the world as seen optically but how the complexity of the real and the imaginary gets merged into one unified yet confusing space.

Surrealist realism...

His canvases are like recollections of memories where the familiar subtly diffuses into the unfamiliar which is like a surrealist dreamscape, such as an elevator door leading to a washed out beach. His oeuvre may fall into the categories of realism but he has found is own language which sure differs from the traditions. The images are mostly derived from his experiences, where he attempts to depict the limitless imagination of human psyche.

Inspiration...

The layers of human existence are what attract him the most. His biggest inspiration is his childhood dreams. The innocent palpability of young minds often gets hardened by the earthly realities. And Avi, remembering his childhood memories, always tries to surpass the obvious.

Balancing work and life...

Drawing a line between work and life is not what Avi seeks. The interrelation between the two makes his journey one whole.

Message for the art enthusiast...

“Confidence is what it takes to create a firm ground in the field of visual art. Just keep working! Work hard, every day and try to judge things in your own terms.”

What is Pinch?

Arvind : It is an initiative of me and Alok. It is something other than the com-mercial stuff we are doing in Mumbai. What we do as professionals are mostly graphic design, video packaging, illustration and animation for creative agencies/studios as well as individual clients. But we have not done any com-mission as Pinch till now. Pinch is basically the freedom we seek. You may call it pin-up art but to us, sensuality is a beautiful expression.

Alok: See, erotic art is something we normally shy away from or attribute lewd and subverted connotations to. But most people miss the point that it is essentially a celebration of our sexual desires and fantasies. I mean back in history world war soldiers even considered pin-up girls as their guardian angels.

Pinch is not too explicit or vulgar. And we do not do it for just the sake of exhibition. We also put con-scious effort to not portray men and women as mere sex objects.

Inspiration?

Alok: It is really hard to list them all. From Renaissance artists to Norman Rockwell, Frank Frazetta, Pino Daeni, comic book artists/writers such as Mike Mignola, Milo Minara, Frank Miller, Osamu Tezuka etc. There are also hundreds of creative people on the internet and oh of course! Sci-fi movies and Tv-series dramas need special mention. The list is endless actually.

Future plans?

Arvind: Make Pinch richer in content!

In conversation with Rashmeet Kaur

Having recently moved to Toronto and breathing in the new cul-ture Rashmeet found her life filled with fresh amusements. And leisure pursuit of this professional retail and exhibition designer turned into objects of awe.

So how do you define yourself?

I am a lover of fool, travel, fruity shampoos and all sorts of cli-chés you can think of.

How did it all start?

Craft supplies are my childhood buddies. I have always been a hopeless hoarder of things my neighbours would probably discard. From the fear of all my fabulous finds piling up silly, I get this itch to upcycle them from time to time.

What triggers you?

I guess I love the hands-on aspect of any craft. That explains my interest in ceramics, glassblow-ing sculptures and even art installations. I love the fact that these projects can be as frugal as you want and you don’t necessarily have to break your bank to create something usefully beautiful. Some people dismiss décor as fluff and non-functional but I fancy of a thing of beauty. And of course, the internet is full of DIY enthusiasts whose works are my daily dose of inspiration.

Where can we follow your work and connect with you?

You can E-mail me at [email protected] and my portfolio blog should be up soon!
