Note to Parents:Children naturally look to their parents to support and guide them through stressful times. This is especially true when a child faces a new medical treatment. This book is designed to help children understand what to expect during radiation therapy.

Radiation therapy is a targeted therapy where high energy beams are used to damage cancer cells and stop them from dividing and growing. Depending on your child’s cancer diagnosis, radiation therapy is at times solely used and sometimes used in conjunction with other treatment options. The radiation oncology team will discuss the number of treatments needed as well as the schedule of these treatments.

This book will help the most if you read it with your child. While reading about another child’s experience with radiation therapy, your child will learn about what to expect during as well as after radiation treatments. After reading the story, encourage your child to talk about their own feelings and experiences too. By being open, honest and keeping a positive attitude, you can help your child cope well with radiation therapy.

Note aux parents :Les enfants se tournent naturellement vers leurs parents pour les aider et les guider au travers de périodes stressantes. Ceci est particulièrement vrai lorsqu’un enfant fait face à un traitement médical inconnu. Ce livre est conçu pour aider votre enfant à comprendre à quoi s’attendre pendant la radiothérapie.

La radiothérapie est un traitement ciblé où des rayons d’énergie élevée sont utilisés pour empêcher les cellules cancéreuses de se diviser et/ou de croitre, et de les détruire. Selon le diagnostic de votre enfant, la radiothérapie est parfois utilisée seule, parfois utilisée en combinaison avec autres thérapies. L’équipe de radio-oncologie va discuter avec vous le nombre de traitements nécessaires ainsi que l’horaire de ces traitements.Votre enfant bénéficiera davantage de ce livre si vous le lisez avec votre enfant. En lisant à propos de l’expérience d’un autre enfant avec la radiothérapie, votre enfant pourra savoir à quoi s’attendre pendant et après la radiothérapie. Après avoir lu l’histoire, encouragez votre enfant à parler de leurs propres sentiments et expériences. En étant ouvert, honnête et ayant une attitude positive, vous pouvez aider votre enfant à faire face à la radiothérapie.

when you need

I can’t see or feel radiation

treatment because it is

completely invisible. Radiation

treatment destroys the cancer

cells in my body. It stops my

cancer from growing.

Je ne peux pas voir ou ressentir

le traitement de radiation parce

qu’il est complètement invisible.

La radiation détruit les cellules

cancéreuses dans mon corps. Elle

arrête mon cancer de grandir.

Before any treatment

begins, my family and I met

the radiation oncologist

(radiation doctor) to talk

about my treatment plan.

Radiation therapy treatments

are usually given every day

but I will get the weekends off.

Avant que l’on commence le traitement,

ma famille et moi avons rencontré le

radio-oncologue (médecin de radiation)

pour parler à propos de mon plan

de traitement. Les traitements de

radiothérapie sont généralement donnés

chaque jour, mais je vais avoir congé

les fins de semaines.

The next step is called the CT

Simulation. The CT Simulator is

a big machine that looks like a

doughnut. It takes special pictures

(scans) that help the radiation

team decide exactly where to treat

me. The most important thing is

that I lie very still while this is done

and during all of my radiation

treatments.

L’étape suivante est appelée la

simulation CT. Le simulateur est une

grosse machine qui ressemble à un

beigne. Il prend des images spéciales

(scans) qui aident l’équipe de

radiothérapie à déterminer la région

exacte de mon corps à traiter. Le plus

important c’est que je ne bouge pas

pendant cela et au cours de toutes

mes séances de radiothérapie.

Some kids like me need to

wear a special mask for

their treatments. The mask

will help me keep my head

still. Everybody has their

own mask made as it needs

to be molded to fit perfectly.

The mask felt warm when

it was placed on my face

because it was dipped

in warm water to make

it soft. The mask also

has holes all over it so

I could keep breathing

easily through it and

they make holes for

my eyes so I could see

everything. Someone

will decorate my mask

once I go home. I was

asked to choose what

I wanted on it. I chose

to have princesses on

mine and it will be

ready when I start my

treatments.

Certains enfants comme moi ont besoin de porter un

masque spécial pour leurs traitements. Le masque

empêchera à ma tête de bouger. Chacun a son

propre masque car il doit être moulé afin de s’ajuster

parfaitement au contour de ma tête. Le masque était

légèrement chaud lorsqu’il a été mis sur mon visage parce

qu’il avait été trempé dans de l’eau chaude pour l’amollir.

Le masque est aussi couvert de petits trous afin que je

puisse respirer facilement à travers. Ils ont aussi fait deux

trous pour mes yeux afin que je puisse voir. Après que je

quitte le centre de radiation, quelqu’un va décorer mon

masque. J’ai été invitée à choisir ce que je voulais comme

décoration. J’ai choisi d’avoir des princesses sur le mien et

il sera prêt lorsque je commence mes traitements.

I also needed a blue bean bag for my

treatments. This is used to keep the rest

of my body still during the treatments.

The radiation therapists drew some

marks on my skin with a marker. They

also placed stickers on my skin. The

marks and stickers will be used when

I get my treatments. I was told that

it’s very important not to wash off

the marks or take off the stickers. Not

everyone will need a mask or a bean

bag for their treatment. The radiation

therapist will let you know what you

will need when you arrive.

J’avais aussi besoin d’un sac moulant (bean

bag) bleu pour mes traitements. Ceci est utilisé

pour empêcher le reste de mon corps de bouger

durant les traitements. Les radiothérapeutes

ont dessiné des marques sur ma peau avec

un crayon feutre. Ils ont également placé

des autocollants sur ma peau. Les marques

et les autocollants seront utilisés lorsque je

recevrai mes traitements. On m’a dit qu’il est

très important de ne pas laver les marques

ou de décoller les autocollants. Ce n’est pas

tout le monde qui a besoin d’un masque ou

d’un sac moulant pour leur traitement. Le

radiothérapeute te laissera savoir ce que tu

auras besoin à ton arrivée au centre.

Now that I am ready, I will have a

scan. The scan only takes a couple

of minutes. The bed I am lying on

will bring me through the scanner

twice. I am not worried because I

know this does not hurt at all.

After the CT Simulation, I was given

my treatment appointment dates

and times. The next time I return

to the Cancer Center will be for my

first day of radiation.

Maintenant que je suis prête, je vais

avoir un scan. Le scan ne prend que

quelques minutes. Le lit sur lequel je

suis couchée m’apportera à l’intérieur

du scanner deux fois. Je ne suis pas

inquiète car je sais que ceci ne fais pas

mal du tout.

Après la simulation CT, on m’a donné

mes dates et heures de rendez-vous pour

le traitement. La prochaine fois que je

retourne au Centre de cancérologie sera

pour mon premier jour de radiothérapie.

My mom and

I checked

in at the

reception

desk using my

health card when I arrived for my first treatment.

The receptionist showed me where I could get

changed into a hospital gown and then brought

me to the waiting room. It is a good idea to bring

some activities to keep you busy while you wait your

turn. I had to wait there a few minutes while the

radiation therapists got ready for my treatments.

je suis arrivée à mon

premier traitement. Le

réceptionniste m’a indiqué

où je peux changer mes

jaquette d’hôpital et

que tu attends ton tour.

A radiation therapist came to get me

from the waiting room and brought me

to the radiation treatment room. There

I met other radiation therapists who

help with the treatments. Everyone told

me their names and told me what was

about to happen next. They are super nice

people. The radiation therapists helped

me up onto the treatment bed and made

sure I was in the right position using my

mask, blue bean bag, marks and stickers.

Do you like the decorations on my mask? I

think they are really beautiful!

Un radiothérapeute est venu me chercher

dans la salle d’attente et m’a amené à la

salle de radiothérapie. Là, j’ai rencontré

d’autres radiothérapeutes qui aident avec

les traitements. Tous m’ont dit leurs noms

et m’ont dit exactement ce qui allait

se passer. Ils sont des personnes super

gentilles. Les radiothérapeutes m’ont

aidé à monter sur le lit de traitement et

font en sorte que j’étais dans la bonne

position à l’aide de mon masque, le sac

moulant, les marques au crayon feutre et

les autocollants. Aimes-tu les décorations

sur mon masque? Je pense qu’elles sont

vraiment magnifiques !

I had to lie very still in the

radiation treatment room. Even

though I was alone in the room,

I knew the radiation therapists

could see me on a TV and talk to

me through a microphone. I was

able to listen to music to help keep

me relaxed. I was also allowed

to bring music with me so that I

could listen to my favourite songs

during treatments.

J’ai dû me coucher sur le lit sans bouger

dans la salle de radiothérapie. Même

si j’étais seule dans la pièce, je savais

que les radiothérapeutes pouvaient

me voir sur un téléviseur et me parler,

à l’aide d’un microphone. J’ai pu

écouter de la musique pour aider à me

garder détendue. J’ai aussi été alloué

d’apporter de la musique avec moi afin

que je puisse écouter mes chansons

préférées pendant les traitements.

After I finished all of

my radiation therapy

treatments, my parents,

doctors and other medical

staff celebrated the end of

this stage of treatment.

Après que j’ai eu fini

tous mes traitements de

radiothérapie, mes parents,

les médecins et autre

personnel médical ont

célébré la fin de cette phase

de traitement.

SIDE EFFECTSEvery patient will react differently to radiation therapy so this next section will highlight potential side effects that may occur. It’s important to monitor for side effects and discuss them with your radiation health care team as there are ways to minimize them and help your child through their treatments. This may be medications to help decrease the severity of the side effects or creams to care for their skin. Side effects can occur during, immediately after and sometimes can last months to years after the radiation treatments are complete. This is dependent on the dose of radiation, the area receiving radiation (organs involved), radiation schedule and your child’s overall health.

EFFETS SEConDaIrESTous les patients réagiront différemment à la radiothérapie alors cette prochaine section met en évidence les effets secondaires potentiels qui peuvent survenir. Il est important de surveiller les effets secondaires et en discuter avec votre équipe de soins de santé en radiation car il y a des façons à les minimiser et aidez votre enfant à travers de leurs traitements. Ceci peut être des médicaments pour aider à faire diminuer la gravité des effets indésirables ou des crèmes pour les soins de la peau. Les effets secondaires peuvent survenir pendant et/ou immédiatement après et parfois peuvent durer de plusieurs mois à plusieurs années après la radiothérapie soit complétée. Le tout est dépendant de la dose de radiation, la région qui reçoit la radiation (organes impliqués), l’horaire de traitements de radiation et la santé globale de votre enfant.
