As the final week of Semester I draws to a close, it is timely to reflect on some of the major announcements this year and look towards the trips and toursinvolving Radford students over the up-coming holiday period.

New College EntranceLate last year, the College received a Development Application to proceed with plans for a second entry into the College at the corner of Haydon Drive and Battye Street.Since then the College-appointed engineers have been finalising plans for the entry, which will include a drop-off area adjacent to the new Senior School and south of thegymnasium. The plans have now been submitted for final approval and it is envisaged that a tender process will begin shortly. If all goes according to plan, we should see thenew entry completed and ready for use by the beginning of the new school year in 2015.

Senior Staff MovementMr Allan Shaw, Deputy Principal and Head of Senior School, has now left the College to take up the position of Principal of The Knox School in Melbourne. Mr Shaw wasfarewelled by staff and the College Board at a function last week, where his contributions to the College over a number of years as member of the Education and WellbeingCommittee, as well as his two-year tenure as Deputy Principal, were formally recognised and acknowledged.

Mr Phillip O’Regan will begin Term 3 as the new Deputy Principal and Head of Secondary School. As previously detailed, Phillip currently holds the position of Head of UpperSchool at the prestigious Pymble Ladies College in Sydney, a position he has held since the beginning of 2011. Prior to that he was Head of Senior Years at The ScotsCollege in Sydney. In the eight years Phillip was at The Scots College, he also held a number of other senior positions including Dean of Studies, Mentoring Coordinator andYear Coordinator for Years 10, 11 and 12. He has also been a Head of Department and a Director of Sport and PDHPE in schools in Melbourne. His wife and their threeyoung children (who will attend Radford) will join Phillip as they make Canberra their new home.

Mr Peter Dodd, Head of High School has recently announced that after 29 dedicated years of service he will be leaving Radford at the end of Term 3. Mr Dodd will be movingto Queensland to join his wife who has accepted a promotional position in her work. Peter has had an enormous impact on nearly two generations of Radfordians in the manyroles he has had at Radford College, including Head of Department and Director of Studies, as well as his current role. His considered and intelligent approach toward hiswork, coupled with a kind and caring approach to the students, has meant staff and students alike admire him. He will be sorely missed!

Website Update and RebrandingEarlier in the year I described in an eBulletin article how the College intended to carry out a rebranding exercise and oversee the development of a new website. A tendering

process has now been completed and I pleased to inform the College community that a Canberra-based company has been selected to carry out this work on our behalf. Aspart of the tendering process, a ‘Brief of Work’ was compiled by the College to assist the developers. Some of the aims of the project are as follows:

Project an image to our community of our vibrant and active place, showcasing our activities;Project an image of the College showing that it is progressive and active in the field of international education;Promote and celebrate our partners and links; andProvide functional access for families, students and staff to regularly used pages such as access links to the College intranet, web mail, newsletter and onlinebookings.

The stakeholders and users of the website were detailed to be:

Existing parents, seeking newsletter and updated event information;Students and staff as a gateway the College’s Learning Management System (Radford Online)Potential families for enrolment information;Future staff;Regulatory bodies;Members of the educational community; andPeople simply wanting to know more about Radford College.

Workshops, involving a range of stakeholders (staff, Board Members, parents and students), have been held in the final two weeks of this term. One workshop has examinedthe required functionality of the website, while the other one has focused on the design of both the website and the rebranding. Along with a rebranding of the College, a StyleGuide will be compiled allowing for a refreshing and greater consistency in the look of signage, advertisements, stationery and any other means of communication. Thewebsite designers have indicated that the new website should ‘go live’ by the end of Term 3.

The 1-to-1 ProgramThe letter detailing the roll-out of the 1-to-1 Program, which was sent out earlier this term, listed two parent information sessions. These sessions, conducted two weeks ago, attracted a reasonable number of parents, many of whom had the opportunity to ask questions and gain a better understanding of the rationale and nature of the program. Inaddition to hearing information about the ways in which the devices will be used in the classroom, the planned cyber-safety education, the type of device and the nature of therepair program offered under the Computelec Freedom to Learn package, parents were also given information about the ICT Handbook, which is available through RadfordOnline. I strongly encourage all parents to read this document as it contains a wealth of information about the program.

A number of similar questions were asked at the parent information sessions and the Education and Wellbeing Forum where the 1-to-1 Program was launched. In essence, the bulk of the questions were around three main themes:

Why is the College shifting the onus onto parents to provide technology? Will my son or daughter use this device as a learning tool or will it just be used for word processing? What happens if my child’s computer needs repairing?

In short, the College is not introducing the 1-to-1 Program to avoid having to provide technology, but because we firmly believe that students now need permanent (anywhereand anytime) access to technology, at home and in every class. The program will impose significant costs on the College through the need for additional ICT staffing, the roll-out of infrastructure and the supply of software and ‘apps.’ As an example of this, the College is in the process of recruiting a Director of ICT, a position that has not beenpreviously offered in the College.

The College is committed to ensuring the devices will become an essential piece of equipment for all students. In order to foster a culture where innovation in teaching isexpected, promoted and encouraged, we must offer opportunities for our teaching staff to re-evaluate pedagogy and look for alternative and more contemporary modes ofteaching and assessing. As more and more individual staff and whole Departments move to our Learning Management System (Radford Online or ROL), students will findthat they will constantly be retrieving work and assessments from ROL and then submitting their assessments through this system. ROL will also give them access tocommunicate with their teachers and peers in and outside of the classroom. They will need access to ROL in every lesson and in every classroom. Under our current modelof ICT, that is not possible.

Contemporary research shows that the flexibility of a 1-to-1 Program will also enhance our teaching and learning by ensuring technology is available to support studentslearning in every lesson (internet research, subject-specific software, word processing, presentations, spreadsheets etc.), initiating more student-centred learningand allowing access to audio-visual material that enhances their outcomes (photos, music, podcasts, wikis and YouTube). Experience in other schools that have introduced a1-to-1 Program has shown that there is ultimately an increase in student motivation and engagement. It allows the students to spend more time in collaborative work, it seesstudents producing work of a higher quality and greater length, it encourages students to engage more deeply in problem solving and critical thinking, it improves theirresearch analysis skills, and it produces students who are more able to direct their own learning.

We have been strongly advocating that families who do not already have a computer for their child consider purchasing the Computelec ‘Freedom to Learn’ package becauseof the onsite repair option and the $100 capped repair cost. The College will have a limited number of laptops that can be borrowed by students in the event a laptop needs tobe sent away to be repaired, but this service will only be for a limited period.

Early next term another letter will be sent to parents indicating the timeline for ordering computers through Computelec. In the mean time, if parents have any furtherquestions about the implementation of the program, we strongly encourage you to email either Mr Matthew Heinrich (Junior School) [email protected] orMiss Susan Davenport (Secondary School) [email protected]

Senior School Building Wins AwardsLast Saturday evening, my husband and I, along with Business Manager, Mrs Jocelyn Martin, had the pleasure of attending the Australian Institute of Architects ACT Awardsdinner, courtesy of Cox Architects. The Radford College Senior School building had been nominated in two categories: Interior Architecture and Public Architecture.

It is with great delight that I can report that from the two nominations, three awards were won. The Radford Senior School building received a commendation for theColorbond Award for Steel Architecture, a commendation in the Interior Architecture section, and, most impressively, won the Public Architecture Award. This is a wonderfulaccolade for Cox Architecture and Director, Mr Rodney Moss.

Tours and TripsThe mid-year break is traditionally a time when a number of trips and tours are conducted and this year is no exception. Over the holidays, Radford College students will beinvolved in a wide array of local, national and international trips involving service learning, cultural awareness, scientific exploration and sporting endeavours.

G-8 Gamilaraay Trip This is the eighth time we have sent students up to Gamilaraay country, which is in North Central NSW (Moree, Tingha and Armidale triangle). The trips are designed to allowour students to experience life in rural/indigenous Australia through service endeavour, and in doing so, learn more about themselves and their country. Students will workalongside staff and students in the Gamilaraay region, primarily in pre-school and primary school classes. They will also be witnessing first-hand the ground-breaking work ofour national charity ‘Crossing The Divide’. Led by Mr George Huitker, and accompanied by staff members Mrs Linda Milligan, Mr Mark Gannon and Ms Kim Stonham, the tripwill involve 26 students from Y11 and 12. The group left by bus last Saturday 21 June, and they will be returning on Monday 30 June.

Timor Leste Trip This is the sixth year a group from Radford has visited Timor Leste. The staff and students will work to build on the relationships and volunteer work from last five years, whichwill create a rich learning experience for students. The volunteer work involves helping staff and students at the Fatunaba Memorial School, supporting the Dare Museum, running workshops at the Dili Institute of Technology around GPS hand-held devices and geocaching, and exploring further links with the team at the Rehabilitation Centre. The tour will again be led by Fr Richard Browning, and he will be assisted by Mr Peter McDonald and Ms Rachelle Hayward. The 15 students who are on the trip are fromeither Y11 or Y12. They left last Friday 20 June and will return on Wednesday 2 July.

European Science Tour For most of the coming holidays, 34 students (from Years 10, 11 and 12) and four teachers will travel to Europe for an adventure that will take them to seven cities in fourcountries. The tour leaves on Sunday 29 June and returns on Thursday 17 July. The main theme of the tour is to pursue the Story of Science, by visiting notable institutionsincluding museums, CERN, Greenwich and Bletchley. Supporting themes include science and technology, urban design and transport, and an appreciation of Europe as adiverse community forged from a turbulent past. The tour is led by Mr Richard Wardman, who is assisted by Mr Alan Lee, Ms Jonquil Mackey and Ms Vicki Hudepohl. Thegroup lands in Italy, and then travels overland to Switzerland and Germany. The party then transfers to London in order to visit locations in SE England. Logistical support forthe tour is supported by Antipodeans Abroad, a very reputable and experienced school travel group.

SE Asia Trip This tour is the seventh trip that tour leader Mrs Suzanne Rentsch has organised to South-East Asia. This year the tour includes North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.Originally the trip was booked to go to Thailand, but recent political turmoil in that country has resulted in a change of plans. The purpose of this trip is to raise culturalawareness, staying in small hotels, visiting many small cities and rural areas and visiting an orphanage in Cambodia. Unfortunately, the change of plans resulted in thecancellation of the service component of the trip, as this usually requires a 12-month lead-time to make preparations. The tour group will include 22 students from Y11 andY12, as well as Mrs Suzanne Rentsch and Mr Peter Dodd. The group leaves on Saturday 28 June and return on Sunday 13 July.

Central Australia Trip Following the success of last year’s inaugural Middle School Central Australia Cultural Awareness Tour, another trip has been organized to give students opportunities tomeet with, and hear stories from, indigenous elders, thereby beginning to develop a sense of the traditional indigenous story. This background provides a foundation for laterexperiences such as Gamilaraay. It is hoped that this experience will inspire students to extend their personal horizons through greater appreciation and understanding of theworld and people around them. Other aims of the trip include the development of self -esteem, taking personal responsibility, co-operating with and respecting the needs ofothers, and providing opportunities to mix with students from other year levels. The tour has been organized by Remote Tours and will be led by teachers Mrs Jane Lilley, MrAlan Liversidge, Ms Brenda Lander and Mr Steve Lander. In total there will be 20 students from Y7 and Y8 attending the trip, which will leave on Sunday 29 June and returnon Sunday 6 July.

Snowsports Training CampOn Sunday 13 July, the Radford Snowsports team will depart Canberra to spend a week in Perisher at their annual school holiday training camp. Accompanied and led byMrs Belinda Reitstatter from the Junior School, and team manager Jonathan Mandl, the 40 participants include competitive and recreational skiers and snowboarders fromYears 3 to 12. The purpose of the camp is not only to experience intensive coaching from professional instructors in preparation for the season’s competitions, it is also anopportunity for students from a range of ages to spend time together developing friendships, memories and skills to last a lifetime. Perseverance, cooperation, empathy andindependence are among the many attitudes that are typically exhibited from students during this camp, as they tackle the challenges associated with improving theirtechnique, dealing with diverse weather conditions, preparing and tuning their equipment, fitting chains to bus tyres and getting enough rest to recharge their batteries for thefollowing day’s activities.

STUDENT SET DOWN SPOTSPlease do not set down students in Bus Stops

The College has received a complaint from a local resident about Parents/Caregivers repeatedly dropping off students at the Bus Stop instead of the "drop and kiss"area. Please use the designated set down bay and not the bus stops.

Much Revue About NothingYear 12 Revue24, 25, 26 July, 6.30pm TB Millar HallBookings: www.trybooking.com/FBCCPrices: $12 online, $14 at the door#whododdit

The Class of 2014 invites you and your family to this year’s Year 12 Revue! Thisevent is a much loved tradition at Radford, and is an opportunity for our Year12s to showcase their performing arts prowess. Entertaining their audienceswith acting, musicianship and dancing, the Revue is held together by a plot thatallows Year 12 to share some of their experiences as students at RadfordCollege.

Each year, Year 12 participation in the Revue is very high, this year aiming for100 per cent involvement. The majority of students play a part in the Revue, either as a performer or in production and technical support. Organised anddevised entirely by Year 12 students, great pride is felt in the ownership of theirRevue: It is their voice.

Moving away from a ‘road trip’ plot, the Class of 2014 is expanding thismemorable occasion to begin with an animated and esoteric marketplace. Don’tforget to bring your wallet, as there will be various wares available for purchase, including food and memorabilia, all of which will satisfy and excite. An integralpart of the evening, the marketplace will transition seamlessly into theperformance, so I encourage you to take note of the start time of 6.30pm. Youwill not want to miss the explosive beginning!

Each year Year 11s can be heard to mutter that ‘the Revue was OK but nextyear ours will be better’. Will this be true? It is too early to say if the 2014 revuewill be the best revue ever (of course, it will be!) but with exciting innovationsbeing debuted this year, it will certainly be a night to remember.

So whether this is your first Revue or if you are a seasoned audienceconnoisseur, make sure you book your ticket and secure your place atwhat will be Much Revue About Nothing.

From the Head of Junior SchoolPaul Southwell

The weather for our final week of Term 2 has certainly hit with a vengeance. Whilst we have waited for Winter a little longer than normal, it always seems to catch us bysurprise. The timing has been hard, as our very tired boys and girls find indoor pursuits over their normal outside opportunities. As is the way here in Canberra, however, thisweather here means snow on the hills so very close to us, just in time for the break.

As we close in on our halfway mark we are still extremely busy.

Last weekend the College hosted Middle s students from Townsville Grammar in games of Rugby and Netball. I was pleased to see three Year 6 students (EmerMalcolm, Holly George and Lauren Nguyen) selected in our Netball team. Our Year 3 strings program is showcased this Thursday evening, with a cast of 96 strings players at the one time! A lovely finale to this cohort's introductory semester. Our Year 6 classes will be sharing some of the dance moves that they have been working on as a part of their current Unit "How We Express Ourselves”. The Year 6team will present at our Magic Bathtub Assembly this Friday.

As I write this message, as always on a Monday evening, I am a third of the way through reading and commenting upon the 520 Semester Reports. These are sent homethis Friday with students from Kinder to Year 6. I am always thrilled (and a little daunted) by this exercise. This reporting cycle allows a deeper reflection of how our classesare progressing, both against the Australian Curriculum and the ACT Essential Learning Achievement. One thing that always hits me at Radford is the warmth and studentunderstanding that is conveyed by our teaching staff. Whilst it takes a great deal of time, I love being able to read each student's report.

Best WishesI am thrilled to be able to announce to our Junior School parents the birth of Alexander Crane, a bouncy son to Mrs Tina Crane (Landos) and her husband Andy. Enrolmentforms have been received.

Our Junior School also send best wishes to Eleanor Dyne, the student with the biggest smile in Year 5, who is undergoing some medical treatment in Sydney this week. Welook forward to her return in a matter of weeks.

Finally This week we bid a sad farewell to our PYP Coordinator Y3-Y6, Mr David Gocentas. As you are aware, David will take up a position in Laos next semester. David has broughtso much understanding, depth, and warmth to this Junior School in his time with us. He has moved from a fantastic classroom practitioner to a brilliant PYP Coordinator. Wewill sorely miss his abilities, genuine love of teaching, his work ethic, and his wicked sense of humour. Until he returns to Canberra, we wish him well.

Second term is hard here. We journey at a very fast pace. Our Canberra days become shorter and colder, and we all expect so much from ourselves. I thank you for yourwonderful support of your lovely sons and daughters and we lucky adults who help guide them in their journey. Enjoy some well-deserved rest and recuperation as families.

Junior School Athletics CarnivalThe annual Junior School Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 25 July at Radford, if there are any parents/caregivers who are available to help out on the day can youplease send an email to Bernadette Leger in the Sports Department, [email protected]

James Hird Cup 2014 Matt Heinrich – 5/6 Boys Coach Dean O’Brien – 5/6 Girls Coach

On 11 and 18 June, boys and girls from Years 5 and 6 represented the Junior School at the James Hird Cup. They competed in the competitive division of the AFL roundrobin carnival, playing for the right to represent the ACT in the state finals in Sydney.

Following lunchtime trainings in preparation, both teams came to the day with great anticipation of having fun, resulting in them playing in true Radford spirit. The boys teamhad a very successful start, with two comprehensive wins. They were narrowly defeated however, when faced with much more difficult opposition in the quarter and semi-finals. The mixture of rugby, league, soccer and some AFL experience from the boys made the matches quite entertaining to watch! Similarly, the girls began the day bywinning the first two encounters before coming up against the leading teams. They came third overall, won an impressive book for the Junior School Library, and their skillswere even featured that evening on WIN Local News! Many parents attended throughout both days, which was greatly appreciated by the players and coaches.

The boys and girls played extremely well and we were very proud of their efforts. Their enthusiasm and persuasiveness even earned them a soft-serve cone on the wayhome, in celebration of a fantastic day of sport.

PYP IN ACTION TERM 2, WEEK 8, 2014

P-2 PYP Coordinator: Belinda Reitstatter

This section of our Junior School Bytes is designed to keep our school community informed about our Primary Years Programme curriculum in the Junior School.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is made up of four programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme(DP) and the Career-related Certificate (CC). Last week a group of staff, Board members and parents attended an information session on the DP, presented by theAustralasian Development Manager of the DP, Briony Morath.

Despite my involvement in the PYP for the last nine years, I found the presentation both thought-provoking and stirring. I was especially interested in the emphasis that theDP places on a ‘balanced education’, where students are invited to engage in learning experiences from a broad range of subject areas, rather than specialising during theirsenior years. That is, the DP requires students to develop deep understandings and skills relevant to various disciplines including mathematics, science and literature, as wellas studies relating to individuals and societies locally and globally, language acquisition, and the Arts. Underpinning all learning is an exploration of one’s own thinking andknowledge. Students are guided to pose questions, think critically and reflect on their thoughts and understandings in Theory of Knowledge.

The imperative of learning a second language in the DP was also discussed. It is not infrequent that we get caught up with the minutiae of which language to teach whenplanning for language instruction, other than English, in schools. Similar to the approach that the International Baccalaureate takes on learning in any of its four programmes, the purpose of learning an additional language is far richer than the rote memorization of a set of vocabulary. The benefits of learning a second language, over time, areimmeasurable. Some examples include:

being understood by and relating to othersexploring connections with one’s own mother-tongue languageexperiencing curiosity about life in other countriesacquiring international-mindednessappreciating what it is like not to be understooddeveloping a deeper awareness of non-verbal communicationbuilding mutually respectful relationships with people who have grown up in vastly different circumstances and cultures.

Briony made reference to the International Baccalaureate’s Mission Statement, which I have included below, as a way for school communities to consider what is important in21st century learning. I found this interesting to revisit myself, especially in light of the importance of a balanced curriculum and international-mindedness. In the Junior Schoolour teachers are working towards creating learning environments where this statement is reflected. Through collaboration, shared conversations, reflection and professionaldevelopment we continually strive to achieve a mindset of growth.

International Baccalaureate Organisation Mission StatementThe International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peacefulworld through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of internationaleducation and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Dance Cocurricular Group now open to Year 3! The dance cocurricular group meets every Tuesday afternoon from 3.30pm to 4.30pm in the Junior School Hall. The students have been having a great time and are lookingfor new members. The group is for boys and girls from Year 3-6. They are participating in a variety of dances for fun and fitness. The teacher is from the Canberra DanceTheatre.

Numbers will be limited, so students will be taken on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. The cost is $90 per term. Please contact Nerida Dyne if your child is interested.
