    IN THE NOVELS

One of the five Wizards whohail from across the Sea, Radagastthe Brown travelled to Middle-earthwith his brethren some thousand

years into the Third Age. LikeGandalf and Saruman, Radagast isknown by different names amongdifferent peoples, though Radagastremains the most common of them.In Valinor, he was called Aiwendil, roughly translated as Bird-lover. Heappears as a tall Man dressed inearthen-hued robes, old of visageand carrying a staff.

Radagast was initially a part ofthe Wizards mission to contest the

will of Sauron and to unite the FreePeoples against his depredations. Hespent many a year travelling some ofthe realms of Middle-earth, his repu-tation as an herb-master and healerpreceding him. However, as the cen-turies waxed and waned, Radagastfound himself drawn more and moretoward the wild beasts and birds ofMiddle-earth than toward either thetroubles of the worlds inhabitants orthe campaign against Sauron.

    Radagast gradually distanced him-

self from the concerns of the Wizardsand lost himself in plain, mountain, and forest. He befriended many abeast, bird, and other being, includ-ing King Thranduil of the Elvencommunity in Mirkwood and thewild man named Beorn. Radagaststravels eventually concentrated inRhovanion, a realm Radagast becameso enamoured with that he soonbuilt his sanctum, Rhosgobel, alongthe western borders of Mirkwood

forest. There, Radagast passed manya quiet century immersing himself inherb-lore and the mysteries of birdsand beasts.

Radagast rarely travelledbeyond the borders of Mirkwoodor Rhovanion, save for those timesof great need or when the variousCouncils of the Wise gathered todiscuss the great events of the time.Radagast kept little contact with

either Gandalf or Saruman, but inTA 3018, he did travel to Isengardat Sarumans behest. Sarumantold Radagast that the Nine, thedark Nazgl, had crossed the riverAnduin in search of a land called

Shire. Saruman charged Radagastwith finding Gandalf the Grey andimparting this information to him.Radagast could not divine a reasonfor the Nazgls actions and wasfearful; Saruman carefully played onRadagasts concerns much as a min-strel might play on a pipe, turningRadagast into an unwitting pawn inhis selfish game.

Radagast left Isengard in searchof Gandalf, and soon encountered

him along the Greenway, just out-side of the village of Bree. Thesewere realms unknown to Radagast, and he was yet fearful from thedire warnings Saruman had sownin his mind. Radagast informedGandalf of the Nazgls crossing, and that they were in search ofthe Shire. Alarmed, Gandalf askedRadagast to travel to Mirkwoodwith all speed, and once there toask his alliesbeast, bird, and oth-erwiseto report to Orthanc any

actions or movements of the enemy. This Radagast did, reporting toKing Thranduil, Beorn, and eventhe Great Eagles. In the meantime,Gandalf rushed to meet Saruman inIsengard, unaware that his impris-onment awaited him.

Heeding Radagasts request, theGreat Eagles travelled the many landsand observed many things worthnotice, from wolves to Orcs, the NineRiders searching the lands, and the

news of Gollums escape. Gwaihir, the king of the Great Eagles, him-self went to Orthanc to report thisnews. Once there, he discovered thatGandalf was imprisoned at the pin-nacle of the dark tower, and effectedthe Grey Pilgrims escape from there.Had Radagast not informed theGreat Eagles of Gandalf s requestto send news to Orthanc, Gandalfmay not have escaped the clutches

of Saruman and the War of the Ringmay have ended in utter defeat forthe Free Peoples.

No record exists of Radagastspart in the final campaigns of theWar of the Ring. It is possible that

he travelled north to assist KingBrand of Dale and King DinIronfoot in their battles against theEasterlings at the great mountain ofErebor. Another possibility is thatRadagast retreated to the forests andthe plains to safeguard the birds andwild beasts he had befriended overthe ages. Of course, it is also pos-sible that he retreated to any numberof hiding places or delvings to waitout the dramatic events of the late

    Third Age.

    IN THE GAME

Any group traversing the realmsof Middle-earth stands a good chanceof running into Radagast, dependingon when their adventure takes place. If it is set many centuries before theWar of the Ring, they may encoun-ter Radagast wandering the realmsof Arnor, Dunland, or Eregion,

researching herb-lore or observingthe many beasts that inhabit thoserealms. Radagast will come acrossas willing to help if asked, but will be

seen as somewhat distracted, prefer-ring to investigate sightings of beastsand birds.

If the adventure is set in theyears immediately prior to the War,heroes probably will not encounter

Radagast unless they travel the realmof Rhovanion or specifically look forhim along the borders of Mirkwoodforest. Radagast will show a reluc-tance to assist those in need, thoughhe can overcome this resistance if thecalling is truly significant. Radagastwill be an eager teacher for those whoexpress interest in the ways of wildbeasts or herb-lore.

Radagast the Browns activitiesduring the Fourth Age are unknown

to the annals of the time. It is pos-sible, though unlikely, that he crossedthe Sea after the War of the Ring.It is believed among the informedthat Radagast yet remains in Middle-earth. He may have returned tohis home at Rhosgobel, or may haveresumed his wandering nature, travel-ling from realm to realm with nary apause in his movements.

    RADAGASTS STAFF

Like each of the Wizards, Radagasthas fashioned a staff to act as a focusof his power. Each staff is uniquely

attuned to the Wizard who made it,and it can only be fully wielded bythat individual. Radagasts staff hasthe following powers:

Defence : During combat,Radagasts staff counts as a large

shield. In addition, he can make onefree parry attempt per round with it.

ScribeSign: Radagast can scribea short message onto any solid surfacewith a single sign, which appears asnothing more than an indecipherablerune. Radagast and any allies he des-ignates understand the signs message, which may be up to a dozen words inlength. The sign lasts until Radagasterases it by striking it with his staff orone week passes. Radagast may only

have three signs in existence at anygiven time.Spell patternS: Radagast may

cast the spell Revive once per daywithout making a Stamina test toresist Weariness. Furthermore, thisspell does not count as one cast byRadagast for the purposes of deter-mining the Weariness TN of otherspells he casts. Thus, Radagast coulduse this ability and immediately castanother spell without suffering thestandard test result penalty for cast-

ing too many spells in a short periodof time or having multiple spells ineffect at one time. Radagast may usethis power once per day.

StrengthoftheStaff: Whenrecovering Weariness Levels, Radagastreduces the time needed by half. Hecan use his staff to recover a total ofthree Weariness Levels in this man-ner per day.

    FEATHERS OF THENOBLE B IRDS

Radagast the Brown has a long histo-ry and friendship with the noble birds ofMiddle-earth. Whenever he befriends anew bird, it gives him one of its feathersas a symbol of that new friendship. Themagic created by this simple gift-givingis both subtle and powerful.

When in need, Radagast may tossone such feather into the air and utterthe calling word unique to the bird ofthat feather. The bird will hear thecall wherever it may be, no matterthe distance, and will endeavour to

answer Radagasts call if able. Oncethe bird has answered the call, it isfree to go back from whence it came.

Radagast possesses gift-feath-ers from dozens of birds, includingeagles, falcons, hawks, robins, star-lings, and thrushes. Even the nobleGwaihir himself has given Radagastone of his feathers, though Radagastcannot conceive of a situation wherehe would require aid from the king ofthe Great Eagles.

    RHOSGOBEL

Radagasts sanctum, Rhosgobel, islocated along the western border ofMirkwood forest, east of the Carrockin the great Anduin River and northof Mirkwoods Old Forest Road.Unlike Sarumans imposing towerof Orthanc, Rhosgobel is a modesthome set on a modest parcel of land.Radagast has simple tastes, content to

surround himself with beasts, birds,herb-lore and books of many subjects.Radagast maintains a garden contain-ing a wide variety of plants and herbscarefully cultivated from his extensivetravelling of Middle-earth.

Radagast maintains a small libraryof books related to medicine, herb-lore, and the like. These books rangein quality from +1 to +4.
