INTRODUCTION TO BAJA SAE: Baja SAE is an international collegiate design competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The contest challenges each team to function as a small manufacturing firm whose task is to design, fabricate, market, and race an off-road vehicle prototype that will be evaluated from a variety of manufacturing angles. The vehicles are judged based on their ability to traverse a harsh off-road racing course while not succumbing to the rigors of it. The Baja SAE Series consists of seven competitions. Baja SAE Alabama, Baja SAE Oregon, Baja SAE Wisconsin (all three in north america), Baja SAE Brazil Baja SAE Korea Baja SAE South Africa Baja SAE India: Sponsored and Hosted by SAE INDIA & conducted at NATRAX, Pithampur. MNIT’S BAJA SAE TEAM: Team from MNIT, Achilles, participated in Baja’11 marking the institute’s debut in baja. The team cleared the Virtual Baja Round and then successfully completed the final round in the main event. The off-road vehicle made by team Achilles was one of the few vehicles which survived the engine choking, gruelling final endurance race. Team from MNIT is participating in Baja again in BAJA’12 this academic year under the name Racetrack Raiders. Eight members of this year’s team were part of the team Achilles( including the captain and vice-captain of achilles ) and thus, this year the team has got the benefits and experience of participating in Baja’11.

THE CAR:

Each team has to use a Lombardini LGA 340 – 11 hp engine only and the chassis, suspension, steering, brakes and drivetrain are designed and fabricated around this engine. This equalizes all the teams on the power level and what type of vehicle and what performance of the vehicle we make out from that power is really what matters. This engine is a requirement of the competition, and cannot be modified in any way. Each team’s goal is to design and build a prototype of a rugged, single seat, off‐road recreational vehicle intended for sale to the non‐professional weekend off‐road enthusiast. The vehicle must be safe, easily transported, easily maintained and fun to drive. It should be able to negotiate rough terrain in all types of weather without damage and thus is called an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV).

THE CHALLENGES:

The vehicle and associated documentation must be conceived, designed and fabricated by the team members without direct involvement from professional engineers, faculty or professionals in the off‐road and racing communities. Prior to the competition, the teams must submit a design report and cost report to SAE officials. The design reports are judged on originality and innovation, suspension and brake system, power train, structural design, craftsmanship, operator comfort, feasibility for mass production, serviceability, and flotation and water propulsion. The cost reports are judged on prototype cost, manufacturing cost, documentation, and an optional overview. A strong pair of reports is essential to boost a team’s overall standing in the competition. The teams must put their cars through rigorous tests at the competitions. First, the cars are thoroughly inspected for safety and design. They are then raced through a number of qualifying events: top speed, acceleration, braking, land maneuverability, water maneuverability, wooden logs maneuverability, hill climb, mud bog and suspension. Finally, every car still standing is raced for four hours in the competition’s

centerpiece endurance race. In addition to the design and testing, the competition also presents the challenge of fundraising. Our team is wholly responsible for raising all of the funds to continue competing in Minibaja. Tooling, construction materials, and travel expenses must be covered by either material or monetary donations to the team.

BENEFITS TO STUDENTS:

The car being painted in the mechanical workshop.

The Baja SAE competition is an excellent learning experience that requires the students to push their creative and engineering ability to the limit. The project provides students with significant challenges that require complete commitment and determination to overcome. Malaviya National Institute of Technology participated in Baja for the first time in Baja’11 and it was a remarkable experience. MNIT is participating again in Baja’12 as Racetrack Raiders and the team is working hard for and looking forward to laudable results and an exciting journey ahead in Baja 2012.

The Project Baja is beneficial to all those directly or indirectly involved. The objective of the project is to present engineering students with the opportunity to apply their classroom skills to real world engineering problems and tasks. Although the project is geared towards engineering students, a student from any major can participate and apply their particular training and skills. Students who participate in the program gain experience in mechanical design, fabrication, testing, communication, and project and labor-time management. The team members carry the engineering technical and managerial experience gained from this project into the professional world.
