Did you know Parkinson’s disease affects more than a million American families? Some of those families include RaceTrac team members and Trac Fanatics, making RaceTrac’s continued support of the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research such an important part of RaceTrac’s culture. In 2012, RaceTrac raised more than $230,000 to help fund the Fox Foundation’s efforts to find a cure for Parkinson’s. This year, because of our team members’ hard work and dedication to the cause, along with the support of some key vendors and our guests’ contributions, we raised more than $275,000 for The Fox Foundation! To kick off our efforts in April, which is National Parkinson’s Awareness Month, we hosted RaceTrac’s Run for Research 5K at the SSC in Atlanta. More than 1,000 participants joined in the effort to help make a difference in the fight against Parkinson’s disease. Our regional Run for Research 5Ks were also a big hit this year. With true warrior’s spirit, hundreds of team members participated. The WFL team represented more than any other region with 120 participants. And of course, as one of our most popular annual promotions, the Coffee for a Cause program brought in more than $169,000 this year! WOW! We owe this success to your top- notch execution for this promotion. On top of all that, our contribution was made even more substantial thanks to generous donations from partners like Coca-Cola, Altria, Anheuser Busch and MillerCoors. These vendors donated $10,000 or more to the Fox Foundation on our behalf this year. Overall, the Michael J. Fox campaign during National Parkinson’s Awareness Month was the most successful to date. We’re already thinking of ways to top it next year! RaceTrac Supports the Michael J. Fox Foundation SSC ISSUE - FALL 2013 How did we reach more than $275,000? Delicious frozen yogurt, walk-in beer cooler, expanded food and beverage offerings…there are countless reasons to love the RT6K. Over the last two years, we’ve opened more than 40 RT6Ks in the south, but this store model only makes up 15 percent of our growing RaceTrac fleet. What about the other 85 percent, you ask?

You might have heard about RaceTrac’s initiative to remodel stores built before the RT6K to create a consistent look and feel in all stores. While RaceTrac continues to build RT6Ks, it’s time to give other locations some TLC, too. Earlier this year, a team of individuals from Store Design, Construction, Marketing,

Category Management, Food Programs, Operations and Capital Planning was assembled to take on the remodeling challenge. This group has been working to create a design that provides a consistent look, branding and food offering, while still producing incremental financial gains. Updating the 5K store model will be the first big step for the remodeling program, in which more than 100 stores will be remodeled.

With various in-store offerings and multiple store models, it will be up to this team to determine what offerings will work for each remodeled store. The team has finalized the new 5K layout and is planning all of the logistics before beginning construction. The current goal is to start remodeling select 5K stores across all regions to test the new layout. Once the 5K remodels are finished, it’s on to more stores!

This major initiative will require a lot of time and resources, but the payoff will be worth it when guests can walk into a store built before the RT6K and have the same awesome experience they do in a brand new building. Be on the lookout for more updates when you can see the first remodeled store for yourself!

Team Member Spotlight – Alison UmbargerWe all know Alison Umbarger as a Category Manager by day, but did you also know that she is a professional photographer by night? Alison grew up taking the photos during her family vacations, but it wasn’t until family and friends began asking her to take pictures at their special events that she realized she had a knack for capturing great images.

Alison considers her first big break the moment when “a woman that was not a friend (or friend of a friend) found me on Facebook, and asked me to photograph her wedding. It made me realize this person believes my work is high quality and trusted me for such an important day.” Alison’s hobby was becoming a professional reality.

Though Alison has photographed weddings and families alike, she prefers shooting children’s first birthday parties. “The parents don’t have to worry about taking pictures and can enjoy the fun. I love capturing these moments because people are their most natural and best-looking when they aren’t posing.”

Check out Alison’s work at www.facebook.com/AlisonUmbargerPhotography.

Check out what’s new for Benefits and Open Enrollment!

By Nicole Peaper

Open Enrollment takes place each November and this year Open Enrollment

is more important than ever! Last year there were enhancements to the dental plan, such as adding orthodontia to the Dental Plus Plan. SSC team members can expect to see even more improvements and changes to the 2014 medical and wellness plans.

This year, open enrollment is active enrollment! Active enrollment means all RaceTrac team members must go through the open enrollment process to obtain benefits for 2014, regardless of if you want to keep your current benefits. There have been significant health care laws and medical plan updates, so it's important that you review changes and select personalized options for your 2014 benefits plans. Associate Manager of Benefits Jackie Moore says, “Participating in an active enrollment will ensure that team members are aware of their options and have the opportunity to pick the best package for themselves and their families.”

Here is what you need to know:

• Active Enrollment: Even if you do not wish to change your health plans you will still be required to login to MyTrac and submit your selections.

• New Addition to the Medical Plan: RaceTrac is now offering a new medical plan in addition to the current Consumer Driven Health Plan (CDHP)/ Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) offer. The new medical plan offering is a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)/Health Savings Account (HSA) plan which includes a higher deductible and lower premiums.

• New Wellness Vendor: “Healthyroads” is a new vendor for RaceTrac that will help you manage personal wellness goals and keep track of your incentives, such as signing the non-tobacco waiver or participating in a LifeTrac wellness program.

Don’t sweat it! Just keep your eyes peeled for the latest Benefits information and update your information in MyTrac. Also, having a discussion with your family to evaluate plan options that work for you wouldn’t be a bad idea. Lastly, don’t forget to take part in the Town Hall discussions and upcoming Healthy Living Fair to learn more about the new health care laws and changes taking place.

If you have questions or wish to review your plan, schedule a meeting with a member of the Benefits team. Your health and wellness are important, so make sure you’re ready to tackle Open Enrollment with all the facts!

Phil West’s Taking the “How” out of Buying a House

By Tamara Brown

RaceTrac’s own Phil West, Corporate Counsel, recently offered home buying advice during a Lunch & Learn session entitled “Taking the ‘How’ Out of Buying a House.” The process can seem intimidating, but when armed with the right information, buyers can be settled into their new homes in no time. Here are a few highlights:

Consider Using a Broker: Broker agents usually know the local market well, and will often know the history of specific neighborhoods and properties. Agents can help arrange visits, prepare contracts, handle negotiations, assist with due diligence and hold earnest money.

Do Your Due Diligence: Buyers should inspect the home and property for deal-breaking problems and/or issues for the seller to resolve before closing. Due diligence can include home inspection and warranty, searching title and acquiring title insurance, obtaining land surveys, reviewing homeowner association (HOA) covenants, conditions and restrictions and making sure any past taxes, HOA dues and violations have been cleared. A buyer must make every effort to have these tasks completed or run the risk of inheriting costly issues that could have been resolved by the seller prior to closing.

Read and Understand the Contract: Thoroughly read through each section on all contract forms thoroughly and double check for accuracy, keeping in mind that these contracts may need to be modified, as they are rarely drafted with the buyer’s interests in mind.

What to Expect at Closing and Post-Closing: Signing numerous loan and acquisition documents, transferring funds and obtaining the closing binder all happen here. After closing, you should receive the original deed, make your next mortgage payment and complete a change of address form. It’s also wise to have new locks and an alarm system installed at your new place.

If you have any questions or would like additional information, you can visit Phil or any other member of the Legal Department.

Insight Into Fuel PricingBy Sarah Saadatjoo

Back in high school, I was making some serious dough working as a waitress at the local pizza restaurant. The dollars were basically flowing like water so I never needed to shop around for the cheapest gasoline. It was just me, my mom’s car and the open road….

Just kidding. Much like you, I was a struggling high school (and college) student who would waste gallons of gas looking for the best price in town. I thought I had it all figured out: don’t buy near the highway, stay away from the city, and definitely don’t go to QuikTrip. Turns out I had no clue what I was talking about, well, minus the QuikTrip part.

Thankfully, fuel pricing gurus Isaac Dymkowski and Jay Peake helped me understand more about this mystery. The Fuel Pricing team sets the retail price for gasoline and diesel at RaceTrac and RaceWay stores. Multiple times each day, this team reviews competitor surveys to ensure that our stores are well priced in each market. According to the gurus, it’s all about knowing the competition in a particular market. Fuel Pricing Managers evaluate a variety of circumstances, including: what does our competition have to offer, do they have a positive brand image and if the location is easily accessible for drivers. Evaluating the competition is a key element when determining the optimal price for fuel. Another essential ingredient in the fuel pricing recipe is understanding trends.

“You work at RaceTrac? They always have the lowest gas prices!” You’ve probably heard that plenty of times from friends and we’re proud that the RaceTrac brand represents a high-value, low-cost option. To determine these awesome prices, the Fuel Pricing team considers trends such as slow days from years past or upcoming holidays when driver traffic increases. These pricing geniuses specialize in competitively pricing fuel and understanding trends so RaceTrac can receive the most bang for its buck.

All in all, fuel pricing is an intricate math game that can result in some serious cha-ching. The Fuel Pricing team spends countless hours studying various markets to ensure that RaceTrac maintains its brand image of offering the best value to our guests. For your next happy hour, consider hosting it at your local pizza restaurant and inviting the cool cats in Fuel Pricing as a thank you for their hard work. Be sure to tip your server, and encourage them to fill up at RaceTrac!

Reservoirs are locat-ed underground and

pump crude oil to the sur-face, where it is stored until ready to be trans-ported to reneries.

1 Crude oil is transport-ed by oil ships to re-

neries in Texas. A large oil ship can move more than a million tons of oil per trip.

2 In Texas, hydrocar-bon chains (crude oil)

are isolated, rened into diesel, gasoline and vari-ous other fuels and stored on-site.

3 Rened fuels are pumped into the Co-

lonial Pipeline (CP) in packets separated by wa-tertight devices called “pigs.” These “pigs” move with the fuel and keep them from mixing.

4 Certain packets are extracted at the CP

terminal in Powder Springs. Each fuel type is held in a storage silo as other fuels continue on the pipeline all the way to New York.

5 Energy Dispatch fuel trucks pick up the

purchased fuel and drive it to RaceTrac and Race-Way stores in Georgia.

6 At each store, trucks drop fuel into under-

ground tanks that hold diesel or gasoline.

7 When payment is authorized, a valve

opens inside the fuel pump that allows fuel to ow through the fuel hose and into your gas tank.

The Flow of FuelBy Ryan Shorr

Ever wonder where the fuel you put in your car comes from? If you ll up at RaceTrac, those energy-packing hydrocarbons have traveled a long way to get to your vehicle. Follow the ow-of-fuel chart below to see how fuel from under the ground makes it to RaceTrac fuel pumps.
