TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — As the prophet Samuel anointed David with oil, the spirit of the L rushed upon David and remained with him from that day forward (1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a). Psalm — The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading — You who were once darkness are now light in the Lord. Live as children of light (Ephesians 5:8-14). Gospel — The man who was blind from birth proclaimed: The one called Jesus made clay with his saliva, anointed my eyes with it, and told me to wash. When I washed, I was able to see! (John 9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38]) The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. SEEING AS GOD SEES Today’s readings encourage us to set aside our own assumptions and ask God to help us see as God sees. While our sights are set on happiness and success, God’s vision of these blessings often differs greatly from ours. Though we are instinctively uncomfortable with the “losers” in our midst, God chooses them as our guides. In God’s eyes, blindness becomes strength, misfits become champions, and dying with Christ becomes the path to everlasting life. We profess faith in Jesus not because doing so will enhance our prestige or increase our wealth, but simply because following Christ pleases God. God’s vision for the Kingdom challenges us to seek humility. With God’s help, we can resist the temptation to seek preferential treat-ment and live as children of light, servants to God’s people.

LIGHT AND SHADOW In faith there is enough light for those who want to believe and enough shadows to blind those who don’t.

2017 Annual Catholic Appeal Prayer ACA Theme for 2017 --- Live in Faith – Give in Love

God our Creator, Giver of all good gifts, we praise and glorify you.

Teach us to acknowledge always, and with enduring gratitude, the many blessings your infinite love has showered upon us. Widen our vision and enliven our generosity, as we seek to support the

pastoral and charitable works of our diocese in Brooklyn and Queens.

All-loving Father, Fountain of Mercy, we honor and adore you.

Open our hearts to welcome the Holy Spirit, who enables us to live in faith and give in love, so that the joy of the Gospel may penetrate every heart in

our local communities.

Open our eyes and stir up in us your compassion, so that all may come to know your Son, Jesus

Christ, the way, the truth and the life, now and forever. Amen.

Our Lenten Prayer

Dear Lord, During this holy season of Lent, remind us these are the days of

salvation. Help us to make it through our difficulties, and the trials and

temptations of everyday life.

Help keep us from evil and help us avoid the pain and hurt sin causes. Remind us to be prayerful and to re-

flect upon the great sacrifice Jesus made for each one of us. Amen

LENTEN SOFT PRETZEL SALE

March 25th & 26th, 2017 after each Mass

Meaning behind the Pretzel’s connection to the Lenten season: (taken from www.catholicculture.org)

“The pretzel has a deep spiritual meaning for Lent. In fact, it was the ancient Christian Lenten bread as far back as the 4th century. In the old Roman Empire, the faithful kept a very strict fast all through Lent: no milk, no butter, no cheese, no eggs, no cream & no meat. They made small breads of water, flour & salt, to remind themselves that Lent was a time of prayer. They shaped these breads in the form of crossed arms for in those days they crossed their arms over the breast while praying. Therefore they called the breads “little arms” (bracellae). From this Latin word, the Germanic people later coined the term “pretzel”. Thus the pretzel is the most appropriate food symbol in Lent. It still shows the form of arms crossed in prayer, reminding us that Lent is a time of prayer. It consists only of water & flour, thus proclaiming Lent as a time of fasting.”
