Could Assumptions Harm Your Retirement Plan? Two Common Misconceptions to Think AboutPresented by the RTN Financial Retirement Group

Assuming retirement will last 10-15 years Historically, retirement has lasted about 10-15 years for

most Americans. !e key word here is “historically.” When Social Security was created in 1933, the average American could anticipate living to age 61. By 2005, life expectancy for the average American had increased to 78.1 So assuming you’ll only need 10 or 15 years’ worth of retirement money could be a big mistake.

In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics said that the average 65-year-old American male can expect to live to nearly 83. !e average 65-year-old American female has an average life expectancy of 85.5.2

Assuming too little risk Holding onto your retirement money is certainly important; so is your retirement income and quality of life. Over the last

few decades, we have had moderate in"ation (and sometimes worse, think 1980). What happens is that over time, even 3-4% in"ation gradually saps your purchasing power. Your dollar buys less and less. If your income doesn’t keep up with in"ation – essentially, you end up living on yesterday’s money. As you retire, you may assume that an extremely conservative approach to investing is mandatory. But given how long we may live – and how long retirement may last – growth investing may be important.

RTN Donates $10,000 to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Boston Marathon Team !e Credit Union recently donated $10,000 to Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s (BWH) Team Brigham. My wife and I needed to relocate to Boston from

Chicago. We had about a month to find a place

that could accommodate our family of four.

We started our search by contacting realtors

that we would find online. Half of them would

not return our calls, the other half would offer

to help, but then give us the run around. Doing

all of this remotely seemed like a hopeless

endeavor. Until we came across Chris Gentile.

From the get go, Chris was honest and upfront

about what to expect from the Boston real estate

market. He was always reachable and guided us

throughout the whole process. He even agreed to

FaceTime with us. All along, we felt like Chris

had our back and we are so grateful that we

found him. We would highly recommend Chris’

services to anyone looking for an honest,

upfront, dedicated, knowledgeable, and all

around great guy to help with your real estate

needs.

Part of a Winning Team Member Nancy Greene’s Story

RTN member Nancy Greene knew she could turn to the Credit Union for her #nancial needs. But she was surprised when she found out about an additional bene#t of RTN membership--

the chance to win New England Patriots tickets. In December 2014, the Credit Union held a ra$e for members to win a pair of tickets for the New England Patriots playo% game against the Baltimore Ravens. Nancy was one of the lucky winners. She gave the tickets to her husband Ned and his friend, who experienced a thrilling game. As we all now know, that game was the #rst step in the Patriots’ march to becoming the 2015 Super Bowl champions.“I stopped into the Brookline branch to make a transaction, when Deb (Deborah Armstrong, Member Service Representative) mentioned the ra$e for the Patriots game. I thought I’d take a chance and enter the ra$e. I couldn’t believe it when I won the tickets! My husband is a long-time Patriots fan and was beyond excited when I told him. He went to the game with a friend of his, and they had an absolutely amazing time.”

A nurse at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Nancy joined RTN a few years ago. She has used the Credit Union to #nance a car, a computer and for other needs. “!e Credit Union has been phenomenal. !e sta% has helped me through many things and was very understanding when I went through a particularly hard time. I can’t say enough about how easy it is to work with the sta%. I highly recommend RTN.”!
