A unifying theory of

constitution

Author: George Loukas

The theory was formulated in 1994 and is being enriched ever since. An initial observation concerning the number of fixations according to psychoanalytic theory and the number of miasms mentioned by Hahnemann was made in 1990. then it was realized that what psychoanalysts called “anal” character corresponded to Hahnemann’s “sycotic” type. Later the “tubercular miasm” was correlated to oedipal fixation and the “syphilitic” one to oral fixation. The psoric miasm was correlated with the process of repression and the constriction of consciousness.

Clinical study followed and this is how there came to be the initial formulation of this theory which actually is a marriage between psychoanalytic theory and homeopathy. By that time efforts to correlate other theoretical systems with this theory had started.

The next correlation was made with Paracelsus’ three categories of diseases. Diseases of sulfur were found to correspond to the psoric type, diseases of salt to those of sycotic type and mercury diseases to the syphilitic type.

An homeopath can readily understand why they were correlated in this way, since according to Hahnemann, sulfur is the king of antipsoric miasms and mercury the king of antisyphilitic ones.

Later on, the the four humours of Hippocrates drew our attention. The key to correlation was the information that the tubercular miasm is a combination of the psoric and the syphilitic miasm, as it was examined together with the Hellenic term “melancholia”, “Melancholia” is the disease of “black bile” certainly corresponded to the syphilitic miasm as melancholy is a grave syphilitic state. Yellow bile corresponded to the tubercular miasm. The hypothesis that phlegm corresponded with sycosis and blood with psora were only initial hypotheses which could only be such as there was no clinical evidence.

When Jawahar Shah came to Hellas and lectured on miasms, he presented a miasm theory based on a stimulus-response model, resembling Pavlov’s model. This is how the idea that there could exist a correlation between Pavlov’s theory and the theory of miasms, was conceived. A comparative study yielded the following: weak inhibited- syphilitic, strong excitable-tubercular, placid balanced-sycotic, vigorous balanced-psoric.

Pavlov had correlated his types with those of Hippocrates, in the same way with us. Finally, an effort was made to correlate the four humours of Hippocrates with the four elements of Embedocles, that is blood with air, phlegm with water, yellow bile with fire and black bile with earth.

Plato and Saint Gregorius of Nyssa had also written about the four elements, each with a different terminology, though.

The final terminology and their correspondance are given below:
