One Week Training Program on"Gender Equality in Academic Leadership"
At Integral University, Lucknow (July 6-12, 2017)
Integral University, a regional Centre for
Academic Leadership and Education
Management (CALEM) AMU, Aligarh
successfully completed the One Week
Training Program on "Gender Equality in
Academic Leadership" (July 6-12, 2017).
In the inaugural session, the Director HRDC
Integral University warmly welcomed the participants and said that "in the nineteenth
century, the central moral challenge was
slavery but in the twentieth century, the
paramount moral challenge is the struggle
for gender equality or gender justice around
the world.". Gender sensitization appears to
be a major issue in Indian society; therefore,
the course is to ensure the professional
development of the teachers in order to
broaden their mental horizon and to sensitize them to the mission of quality, education and
nation building through gender justice.

Academic School, Lucknow, the Chief Guest
of the Inaugural Session stated that men and
women need to be sensitized towards gender
issues, the boundaries that exist between
colleagues and how such boundaries are
crossed. Dr. FaizaAbbasi, Assistant Director,
UGC Human Resource Development Centre,
AMU, Aligarh, the Guest of Honor of the Session said to help men and women be aware of
gender biases, to help them resolve interpersonal conflicts arising from gender issues and
enable them to act assertively and respond to challenges in the workplaces equally. Mr.
Mohd. Nasir from the Department of Law,
AMU , Aligarh held the first session on the
topic "Women Empowerment in CSR &
ISR," that is Corporate/ Institutional and
Social Responsibility for Academic
Leadership.He said that at large women are
good for business specially executive-level
and the importance of corporate sustainability lies individual and corporate social
responsibility. In the world order, there is more pressure from various affairs to pursue more
socially responsible behavior of the individuals. Mr. Nasir shared the data that women have
been making big waves in the world of business.
The lectures were held on issues i. e.
women in higher education, women in nature
conservation, women in education, and
perspectives on gender, gender justice, and
governance issues.Dr. FaizaAbbasi spoke on
women in nature conservation and explained the
term'Eco-criticism as the study of the
relationship between literature and the physical
environment. Eco-criticism is the study of literature and the environment from an
interdisciplinary point of view, whereliterature scholars analyze texts that illustrate
environmental concerns and examine the various ways literature treats the subject of nature.lt
is an intentionally broad approach that is known by a number of other designations, including
green (cultural) studies, ecopoetics, and environmental literary criticism. Earth has seen ages,
civilizations emerging and dying,
bombings and disasters-it still stays and
the same has been the case with women.
Prof. Seem in Hassan, Head, Department
of English, AMU Aligarhinteracted with the
participants on gender justice and talked about
what is gender, gender issues, gender dynamics,
classroom dynamics, teacher and student
behaviors, differences in linguistic styles, effects
on female students, dealing with conflicts and
teaching strategies.Mrs. Tullika Srivastava, Executive Director, South Asia Women's Fund
spoke on women in higher education and legal issues. Dr. Farha Usmani, Chief at United
Nations Population Fund Headquarters, New York had a very interactive session on women
in the world and international leadership. She asked the participant to suggest solutions and
plans for overcoming gender inequality and submit it in writing.
In the valedictory Program, Prof. Mohammad Muzammil, the former Vice
Chancellor, BR Ambedkar University, Agra and former Vice Chancellor, Rohelkhand
University, Bareilly was the Chief Guest. Prof. Muzammil also held a wonderful lecture on
"Governance Issues," and impressively explained the difference between administration,
management and governance. He discussed that
Human Resource Development and Human
Development belong to human means and ends.
He also added that engendering human
development is to make human gender
sensitive- and today is the day to rejoice and a
day to ponder.
Prof. Aqeel Ahmad, Controller of
Examinations, Integral University, the
Guest of Honor, said that "men and women
are two wheels of the same vehicle." He
posed the question that even today why do
men and women both are happier if the
baby boy is born? And-- despite of being a
crime, the pre-birth identification is on rise. Dr. Syed Aqeel Ahmad, Director HRDC
congratulated all the participants and said that "I strongly believe that the subsequent
outcomes of this course on "Gender Equality in Academic Leadership" must have addressed
the problems faced by the intellectuals in the
community. This attempt will certainly prove
to be useful to tackle the problems of Gender
Equality currently prevailing in the
institutions of higher education In the
country," he further added that "the
promotion of gender equality and

empowering o~ women is one of the eight
Millennium Development Goals (MD G) to
which India is a signatory. The pairing of the
two concepts of women's empowerment and
gender equality are two sides of the same
coin- progress toward gender equality
requires women's empowerment and
women's empowerment requires increases in gender equality, justice and sensitization." He
requested all the participants to utilize the academic leadership abilities maximally and also
create insights in gender justice for the up-liftment and development of the ever growing
human resource of our beloved country. At the end, Dr. Aqeel congratulated the TEAM
CALEM, HRDC, Integral University for their untiring help and support for conducting the
course successfully. Mr. Zishan Raza Khan, the Dy. Director, HRDC Integral University,
presented the vote of thanks.
