MAY 2015 2 Mid-Town Bulletin

Why The Rotary Year Begins July 1Ever wonder why the Rotary year begins 1 July? The Rotary International Convention initially played a key role in determining the start date of our fiscal and administrative year. Rotary’s first fiscal year began the day after the first convention ended, on 18 August 1910. The 1911-12 fiscal year also related to the convention, beginning with the first day of the 1911 convention on 21 August. At its August 1912 meeting, the Board of Directors ordered an audit of the International Association of Rotary Clubs’ finances. The auditors recommended that the organization end its fiscal year on 30 June to give the secretary and treasurer time to prepare a financial statement for the convention and board, and determine the proper number of club delegates to the convention. The executive committee concurred, and at its April 1913 meeting, designated 30 June as the end of the fiscal year. This also allowed for changes to the schedule for reporting club membership and payments. Even The Rotarian changed its volume numbering system to correspond to the fiscal year (beginning with vol. 5, July 1914). Rotary continued to hold its annual conventions in July or August until 1917. Delegates to the 1916 event in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, approved a resolution to hold future conventions in June, mainly because of the heat in cities where most of them occurred. The next one was held 17-21 June in Atlanta, Georgia. The term “Rotary year” has been used to signify Rotary’s annual administrative period since at least 1913. An article in The Rotarian that July noted, “The Rotary year that is rapidly drawing to a close has been signalized by several highly successful joint meetings of Clubs that are so situated as to assemble together easily and conveniently.” Since the executive committee’s decision in 1913, the end of the Rotary year has remained 30 June.

A college student challenged a senior citizen saying it was impossible for their generation to understand his.

“You grew up in a different world,” he said.

“Today we have TVs, jet planes, space travel and computers...”

Taking advantage of a pause in the young man’s speech, the senior citizen said,

“You’re right. We didn’t have any of those things when we were young.

That’s why we invented them for you to enjoy.”

Tilak mehta: Membership Development, Bombay Mid-Town

Tilak Mehta joined Rotary in 1982 and has been very active

throughout. He has worked in all avenues of our club and district. He served as President of the Club during the period 1998-99 and has chaired practically every committee in the district. He enjoys being a part of Rotary and the good people, the values and the good work that Rotary is doing.

Hailing from Punjab, Tilak was born in Kasur, a part of Pakistan now. His family was displaced from Kasur during Partition and after a lot of struggle, his family settled down in Delhi. Tilak’s father, a lawyer with the CBI was his role model. A recipient of the Padma Shree Award, Tilak’s father was an image of honesty, discipline and simple living.

After completing his degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, Tilak joined a multinational company in Mumbai. He acquired vast experience in manufacturing and held senior

positions at Metal Box and Colour Carton. He later started his own software company.

His wife Ashok Mehta holds a Master’s degree in Statistics and a post-graduate diploma in personnel management. She has held senior positions at the Navratna Oil Company and Hindustan Petroleum. She is an active member of the Inner Wheel and has been president twice.

Their daughter Sonal is an eye surgeon and is the Chairperson of the Ophthalmology Department in the University of Florida. Their son

Amit is a graduated from IIT Bombay and is also an MBA and a CFA. He is the Senior Managing Partner in a large hedge fund company in New York. Their son-in-law Sanjeev is a well-known paediatrician and their daughter-in-law Ruchi is a PhD in Molecular Biology. Tilak and Ashok Mehta have four charming grandchildren.

“Tilak loves Indian light music and is deeply

interested in spirituality”

Tilak loves Indian light music and is deeply interested in spirituality. He loves reading books on philosophy and his favourites include J Krishnamurti and Eckhart Tolle. He was highly influenced by a training programme on self actualisation which helped him connect with his internal strengths and weaknesses. He believes it has played a major role in his acceptance of life and its uncertainties.

His quest for spirituality has led him to participate actively in a non-profit project called Navadarshan with his college friends. Located near Bengaluru, Navadarshan is a community that strives to cause least damage to the environment. Practising organic farming and powered by renewable energy, they are also heavily involved in afforestation. All their activities lead towards a journey of self-actualisation. It’s amazing that over 100 acres of barren land has been converted into a lush, green forest. The forest is home to over 100 sandalwood trees, none of which were planted by them. This goes to show that nature gives back in abundance if you protect it. Today, Navadarshan not only supports a thriving community, but also supports a large variety of flora and fauna.

Our Rotarian, Parag Parikh, CEO of PPFAS Asset Management

Pvt Ltd, died in a car crash in the city of Omaha, Nebraska in the US on May 3, 2015. It was ironic indeed that Parikh breathed his last in a town where Warren Buffet, who is known to be the world’s leading authority on value investing, was born and still lives, works and holds his annual conference that’s attended by hundreds of followers worldwide.

Parikh had a big heart. In the ‘90s, when Parikh was still in the

stockbroking business, one of his junior employees hesitatingly walked into his office and wondered if he could borrow about R2.5 lakh from the firm. He had to buy a house worth R4.5 lakh and managed to get a housing loan of about R2 lakh. The balance was the shortfall he needed to borrow but wasn’t sure if he could amass the money then and there because he was hesitant to borrow. Parikh immediately issued a cheque of R2.5 lakh.

Rtn Parikh was Chairman of the FOF committee which had 80 members,

mostly from RCBMT. He joined the club in September of 2002. May God grant strength to R/Ann Geeta and the rest of his family members to bear this irreparable loss with fortitude. May God grant Rtn Parag Parikh everlasting peace in his heavenly abode.

Dear Rotarians, We express our profound sadness and extend our sympathies to all those affected by the devastation resulting from the April 25 deadly earthquake in Nepal. Rescue missions and emergency aid continue to arrive in Nepal for the 8 million people impacted by the massive 7.8 magnitude quake. As we mourn the thousands of lost lives, Rotary joins many international agencies in providing immediate relief to survivors and mobilizing our expertise to support long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts. How to help: • District 3292, Nepal, has

established a disaster relief fund to provide needed equipment and supplies to affected communities. Contact District Governor Kumar Piya for information about contributing to the fund.

• Rotary’sservicepartnerShelterBoxis working closely with Nepali Rotarians to coordinate immediate

relief efforts. On Monday, April 27, and Wednesday, April 29, Rotarians greeted ShelterBox response teams in Nepal who will mobilize temporary housing and relief efforts. An initial 1,000 housing tents and 1,000 shelter kits will be distributed throughout affected communities. Two more ShelterBox relief teams and additional kits are ready to be deployed once further assessments are complete. Learn more about supporting ShelterBox’s relief efforts.

• Aswith all disasters, theRotaryfamily may apply for global grants to support long-term recovery efforts in Nepal. Once immediate health, safety, and relief efforts have been addressed, work with local Nepali Rotary members and their international partners to develop projects within Rotary’s six areas of focus.

Monitor the announcements section of My Rotary for

more information as it becomes available and do not hesitate to contact [email protected] with any questions.

Our thoughts are with our Nepali neighbours during this difficult time. Thank you for continuing to Light Up Rotary through your compassion and generosity. Yours in Rotary,
