Remote Tutoring Guide This guide can be used anytime you are not able to meet your learner in-person and when you want to have extra practice time in-between your in-person sessions. Why incorporate technology into each lesson? Digital literacy has become a need for most people and using these tips can help your learner even if your in-person tutoring sessions are not interrupted. The following tips are an easy way digital literacy components can be added to each tutoring session. When you are working with your learner make a point to show how using the technology they have access to can help. Tech can speed up our lives, solve problems quickly and open up opportunities and information they may think they don’t have access to. If learners seem interested but are hesitant, start slow. Ask if there is something they do on their phone, computer, etc. that they wish they could do more easily. New! Digital Literacy Classes Literacy Mid-South is offering digital literacy classes, if you are not comfortable with helping your learner, you can sign up here for a class. We’re planning to begin these in April. Getting Started: Ask your learner what tech they have access to. And of that, what can they use best. Once you start meeting in person again, add digital literacy to each lesson to get them even more comfortable. Create a Google account (Gmail) Most apps and websites can be signed into with one click using a Google account. If your learner has a smartphone, help them set up a Gmail account on their phone and/or computer. Create a Google account here Write login info somewhere your learner will always be able to access Have the Gmail icon on the home screen of their smartphone Practice how to open, delete, restore, create and respond to email and how to change their password in case they lose their login info

Remote Tutoring Guide

This guide can be used anytime you are not able to meet your learner in-person and when you want to have extra practice time in-between your in-person sessions.

● Create a Google account here ● Write login info somewhere your learner will always be able to access ● Have the Gmail icon on the home screen of their smartphone ● Practice how to open, delete, restore, create and respond to email and

how to change their password in case they lose their login info

● Incorporate things like email etiquette and attaching items and links to

emails and creating groups as part of your in-person lessons ● Sign in to Google Hangouts and practice using it for chats and video

calls so you are ready when you cannot meet in-person ● Duo can also be used if you both have Android phones, just invite them

via text ● If you both have iPhones, search for the contact, choose them and click

the video icon for video calls ● Remember to log your remote tutoring sessions in ALIS, they count!

  With or without a smartphone:

● Regular check-in calls and/or texts ○ Keep these short - unless the learner has something to look at

(harder to get things to them without a smartphone) it may get more confusing than becoming more clear

● Calls can be extra helpful for ELL learners practicing conversation ● Texts can be great for grammar

○ Send a short text, have the learner correct it, or find an error and text back and forth until it is correct

○ Practice expanding sentences - start with ‘I stayed home today.’ They add in a word retyping the whole sentence with the word in it then you do the same and continue on until you can’t come up with anything else to add

○ Practice writing a story - you start with a sentence, they add one, you add one and so on. Create poetry or lyrics this way too

○ Send a short text then call to discuss what vocabulary words mean or if it is grammatically correct

● Keep them as you would a lesson plan: if practicing grammar stick to one grammar point

● Set time expectations for responses for texts and calls - it can be at a set time each week or if ongoing set parameters of certain times during the day and a timeframe to respond
