Our students in grades 3 and 4 are now 1:1 with student laptops, and our K4 – 2 nd graders have access to iPads and desktop computers. All grade levels recently completed MAP testing (Measures of Academic Progress) for both Math and Reading, and second grade students completed the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test). These results are used to help teachers ensure greater academic success for our students. On November 18 th , we will have our delicious Thanksgiving meal during your child’s lunch time. Please make plans to come and join us for this special day with family and friends. We are so thankful for all of you! As a reminder as the days get cooler, please remember to send your child to school with a jacket or coat. Our little ones still want and need to play outside during recess and a warmer coat is warranted. We do ask that you write your child’s name in their outerwear so we can return it to the right owner should it get misplaced. Also, please remember to use Cunningham Circle and not Pine Street for car rider pick up in the afternoons. When we use Pine Street we are blocking College Street and other areas that we need to keep clear for safety vehicles. Car rider pick-up is going much better and we appreciate your help! As always, we want to thank you for sharing your precious child with us. We appreciate your support and want to assure you that your child will be loved and cared for each and every day. Healthy Habits for Home—Book Bag Safety—from Nurse Amy

Happy School Year 2016-2017! Wow, have you noticed how heavy your child’s book bag is? Not sure what all they have in them but I do

know they only get heavier as they advance in grades. To avoid improper use, teach your child the correct way to load and carry their book

bag. To help your child avoid back strain, neck strain and prevent future back problems, follow these guidelines for book bag design:

1) Look for lightweight canvas material; 2) make sure they have two wide-padded, adjustable shoulder straps; 3) padded back; and 4) indi-

vidualized compartments.

Teach your child how to properly load and wear their book bag to avoid back pain and strain. 1) Always use both shoulder straps; 2) pack

heaviest objects into the book bag first so they are carried lower and closest to the body; 3) fill compartments so that the load is evenly dis-

tributed throughout the book bag and items do not shift during movement; 4) adjust the straps to fit the book bag snugly to the child's body,

holding the bottom of the book bag 2 inches above the waist and keeping the top just below the base of the skull; 5) do not carry the book

bag low near the buttocks; and 6) lift the book bag by using the leg muscles and keeping it close to the body.

Rocket Squad Students in grades 3 and 4 may write a letter to Dr. Deering stating why they should serve on Rocket Squad. Rocket Squad members are lead-ers in our school who serve as our safety patrol. They help keep us safe so we can learn! Students who serve as a Rocket Squad member have morning and afternoon positions in the cafeteria, in the hallway, in the gym, and at our car rider door. Congratulations to the following Rocket Squad Members!

Student Council Updates

Reidville Elementary will celebrate a Spirit Day on Thursday, November 17. Students may wear their favorite team’s colors.

This includes any pro or college team, as well as our Byrnes Rebels or Reidville Rockets teams! We are all part of a team!

The theme of the day is “Team Up Against Cancer”

PTO News and Update The Reidville Elementary School PTO is off to an amazing start this school year! We had over 85 families and over 40 staff mem-

bers join the PTO this year. We still have Reidville Rocket shirts available for purchase for $10. The PTO began the school year

with Spirit Night at McDonald’s in August. We had a record-breaking turnout and raised over $450 for the school. We also still

have a few Greenville and Spartanburg Attraction Value Guides available to purchase for $20. Please contact us if you are interest-

ed. This year’s Reidville Fall Festival was a HUGE success with inflatables, games, food vendors, silent auction, and Storybook

Pumpkins. We want to thank everyone who made this event possible! Thank you also for the awesome support of the Boosterthon

Fun Run!! We are thrilled with the response to this fundraiser and the students have really enjoyed it. We have a few PTO events

coming up and we need your help. Our Santa Shop is December 5-9 and our current needs are donations to sell (small handmade

crafts or store-bought goods), as well as parent volunteers to help students shop. We also need parent volunteers to help with lunch

duty for our Teacher Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday, December 14, and we need parents to send in some food items for the

Teacher Appreciation Lunch. If you are interested in helping with either event, please email us at [email protected]. We

would love to have you join us! Please keep using your Publix and Ingles loyalty cards to earn money for our school while you do

your grocery shopping during the holidays. Also, keep sending in Box Tops and using the Reidville PTO Amazon Smile page as

you do your Christmas shopping. Keep up with school and PTO events by liking us on Facebook—“Reidville Elementary School

PTO.” If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to email us at [email protected]. Thanks!!

Kindergarten has had a wonderful fall season. We have learned about letters, letter sounds, rhyming words, vowels, numbers, and a lot

of other skills. We have learned rules and routines and how to be great bucket fillers. Kindergarten took a great trip to the Anderson

Dairy! We were able to see how a dairy farm works and we were also able to pick a pumpkin out of the pumpkin patch. Kindergarten also

took a tour around Reidville and we looked at all of the wonderful places in our community. We are looking forward to the winter season

and all of the fun and excitement that it brings!

Fourth Graders have been rocketing through fourth grade this year! Our students have completed multiple units in every subject:

learning new skills, improving upon what they already knew, and integrating it all with the technology we are blessed to have at Reidville

and throughout our district. All of our fourth graders have become solid classroom citizens in communities working together to learn

and grow. As a grade-level, our students have participated in school-wide events and had one AMAZING field trip experience to Swamp

Rabbits Education Day. Our students also turned in some fantastic stats at our school's first Fun Run. Pledge collections should be un-

derway using the official collection envelopes sent home. Look for many more learning activities in Schoology, with feedback and grades

available to you and your student at home. Also make sure to look at agendas each night for daily and weekly activities and homework.

We LOVE FOURTH GRADE and our AMAZING fourth graders! Sincerely, Your Fourth Grade Teachers

First Grade has had a great first quarter of our new school year! As First Graders, we should all be reading at least 10-15 minutes each

day and summarizing what we have read. This is a wonderful habit to have as we strive to be life-long learners. It’s amazing to see the

correlation between reading minutes and speed in moving up reading levels. We can’t believe that November is here. We are continuing

our studies of various genres in reading. We will continue to study the elements of fiction and non-fiction books while studying the

structure of reading all genres. In math, we are finishing our study of addition and beginning subtraction. Our first graders are on

their way to memorizing math facts for the speed tests. Memorization will make subtraction much easier! Our first field trip of the

year took us to Johnson’s Farm in Inman where we enjoyed taking a hayride, exploring a corn maze, picking a pumpkin, tasting apple cider

and apple doughnuts! We considered it a successful day! We can’t wait to see our parents at the Thanksgiving Lunch on Friday, Novem-

ber 18th! We love our First Graders!!

We are off to a great start in 2nd Grade. We’ve enjoyed getting to know our classmates and teachers. In ELA, we have covered our Com-

munity and Organization Units. We are now working on our Relationships Unit. Please continue using www.readtheory.org and

www.spellingcity.com at home. In Social Studies, we are in our Government unit. Please check our website and Schoology for additional

online resources and study helps. In Math, we’ve covered number sense and place value. We are now working on addition and our fast

facts. Students will have a timed math test each week. Please be working on single addends with sums to 20 at home as well as the corre-

sponding subtraction facts. In Science, we have completed our first unit of the year on Matter. We have enjoyed many experiments with

matter. Our next science unit will be about magnets after we complete our social studies unit on Government. Students are doing a great

job using technology in the classroom. We have learned that we have our own school email address and can log in to a computer using their

unique email address and password. Students love using Schoology to find resources, activities, and websites for our current units of study.

Second grade enjoyed a walking field trip to the Reidville Fire Department to learn about fire safety. This was a great way for our kids to

see parts of our community. We are continuing to work on being more responsible and doing tasks more independently.

Third Grade is off to a wonderful year! This year every third grade student has their own laptop to use at school and home. We have

been busy learning how to use them. If your student hasn’t shown you yet, have them log in to Schoology or Google Drive from home to

see some of the new, creative lessons they have completed. Do you know your South Carolina history? Third graders are beginning to

learn all about our great state. Come and visit the third grade hall to see the different regions they have visited. In ELA, our BIG

IDEA has been community and perseverance. We are moving onto learning about perspective. The students have written personal narra-

tives and even worked on some research to go along with their reading. In Science, we just finished up our unit on Matter where we

got to explore the different types of matter while observing the properties of matter and even working on what happens when we add

or remove heat from matter. Math has kept us on our toes as we began the year learning different multiplication strategies. We then

moved onto our place value and addition/subtraction units. As you can see, we have been very busy already this year! Thank you for all

your help as our students learn and grow in third grade!

Our K4 classroom is a very busy place! We are learning about colors, shapes, letters and numbers. We are getting better everyday

at writing our names. In math we finished up our unit on sorting and have begun learning about patterns. In writing workshops we

have been learning how to draw people and how to add details to our pictures.

My Halloween

By Emma Kate Thomason, Brockman 1st On Halloween night I went trick-or-treating. My costume was a prom

queen zombie. I had white, black, and red. I went with my sisters and

my friend. I was trick-or-treating at Apple Valley. I wonder how many

pieces I got? I think I got over twenty pieces! I went to trunk-or-treat

and to the firetruck. I got a sharing size of M & M’s and it was the kind

that I did not like, but I had a great night! One of the houses said take

one handful. I had so much fun.

My Family Trip to Ocean Lakes By Kelsea Nodine, Loftis 2nd

Last summer I went to Ocean Lakes. When we got to the beach house we unpacked our bags and then we sat

on the couch for a little bit. Then finally we went walking on the beach. The next day we went to the park and

then I slid down the slides. I went around and around on the round about, and I swung on the swings. The

next day I went to Broadway and ate and got some stuff like candy, toys, and earrings.

“Counseling Corner”

By Kimberly Rozman, School Counselor

Dear Parents,

Last month our students had the opportunity to celebrate making healthy choices with our annual Red Ribbon Week.

In 1985 a Drug Enforcement Administration officer, Enrique Camarena, was killed for his attempt to put an end to a

Mexican drug cartel. Ever since, we have used Red Ribbon Week as a time to educate all students of the dangers of

harmful substances.

At the elementary level, this can be difficult for our students to understand. In my guidance lessons I talk to our little

ones about asking before eating, drinking, or touching anything they find lying around. This is an attempt to avoid

accidental exposure to household poisons. We talk about how medicines are drugs that are meant to help us but we

have to still be careful and follow the instructions. Our students also learn about the harmful effects of smoking, al-

cohol, and illegal drugs. Unfortunately, we are only able to scratch the surface in a week. Please use Red Ribbon

Week, and every week, as an opportunity to talk to your kids about making healthy choices. Our third and fourth

graders learned about healthy coping skills to deal with stress in life. As kids get older, their friends may offer drugs,

alcohol, prescription medicine, or even smoking as an alternative to dealing with life. Peers may say things such as

“it will make you feel better”, “this will help you be stronger” or “this will help you get more work done”. The reali-

ty is that our children need to know what good things to put into their bodies to live as healthy as possible. They need

to know not only how to “just say no” but they need to know why they are saying no and what alternatives they have.

One of our most important “Refusal Skills” is to tell an adult. Encourage and model for your child how to deal with

bad days, stress, and anger in a way that is healthy. If your child comes to you, tell them “thank you for telling me”

and work with them to help.

If you or someone you love is struggling with substance use of abuse, please seek help. Below is a small list of some

of the helpful resources available in our area that provide emotional support, counseling, or even drug abuse services.
