“Behold a virgin shall conceive…” The art on the cover is a linocut print by Ruling Elder Ned Bustard. The depiction of the characters—particularly the angel Gabriel—was inspired by Ethiopian icon art. Although the angel dominates the visual space in this piece, it is in an otherworldly and spiritual way. Mary will go from this experience to have to carry a child in a community that did not see an angel and thus would probably have viewed the child as illegitimate.

Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

~ Genesis 12:1-3 On the holy mount stands the city he founded; the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling places of Jacob. Glorious things of you are spoken, O city of God.

~ Psalm 87:1-3 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.

~ John 1:14-18 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

~ Philippians 3:12-16 This peace will only become a reality when the nations are willing to submit to the word that goes from Zion where the one, true God has revealed himself. Peace on any other terms is a cruel delusion.

~ Barry Webb

December 1, 2019 | First Sunday of Advent p CONGREGATION STANDS Hearing-assistive headsets are available through the Sound Technician. q CONGREGATION SITS For a large-print edition of the bulletin, please call the church office.

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

q P R E L U D E His Eye is on the Sparrow

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come? Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home? When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He: His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

p C A L L T O W O R S H I P The Protoevangelum —the first promise of the Messiah from Genesis 3

LEADER: The LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?” MEN: “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” LEADER: “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I

commanded you not to eat from?” MEN: “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the

tree, and I ate it.” LEADER: “What is this you have done?” WOMEN: “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” LEADER: So the LORD God said to the serpent, UNISON: “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all the livestock and all

the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

Amen.

Please take a moment to silently confess your individual sins.

LEFT: The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,

RIGHT: He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears;

UNISON: but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.

p T H A N K S G I V I N G

p C R E E D LEADER: Remembering the promise to reconcile the world to himself, God joined

our humanity in Jesus Christ—the eternal Word made flesh. PEOPLE: He is the long-awaited Messiah, one with us and one with God, LEADER: fully human, PEOPLE: and fully divine, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. LEADER: As the second Adam, Jesus chose the path we had rejected. PEOPLE: Jesus lived a full and righteous human life before us. deed and word the coming rule of God. PEOPLE: Standing in our place he carried God’s judgment on our sin—his sacrifice

removed our guilt. LEADER: God raised him from the dead: PEOPLE: he walked out of the grave, conqueror of Sin and Death. LEADER: Jesus ascended in triumph to the heavenly throne. UNISON: All authority, glory, and sovereign power are given to him. Amen.

q C A N D L E L I G H T I N G ISAIAH 9:2-7 The first candle of the Advent wreath is the candle of Prophecy. It reminds us of how God spoke to His people through the prophets, offering them the hope of a Savior. READER 1: The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in

the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.

READER 2: And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.

PEOPLE: The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

p G O S P E L MATTHEW 24:36-44 36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” LEADER: The Gospel of the Lord. PEOPLE: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

q P R A Y E R Adapted from the book “Every Moment Holy” LEADER: Almighty God, as we prepare for the coming Christmas season, we would

also prepare our hearts for the returning Christ. PEOPLE: You came once for your people, O Lord, and you will come for us again. LEADER: Though there was no room at the inn to receive you upon your first arrival, PEOPLE: We would prepare you room here in our hearts, Lord Christ. LEADER: As we decorate our homes, we do so to mark the memory of your

redemptive movement into our broken world, O God. Our glittering ornaments and Christmas trees, our festive carols, our sumptuous feasts—

PEOPLE: By these small tokens we affirm that something amazing has happened in time and space—that God, on a particular night, in a particular place, so many years ago, was born to us, an infant King, our Prince of Peace.

LEADER: As we decorate our trees, and as we feast and laugh and sing together, we are rehearsing our coming joy! We are making ready to receive the one who has already, with open arms, received us.

PEOPLE: We would prepare you room here in our hearts, Lord Christ. LEADER: Now we celebrate your first coming, Immanuel, even as we long for your

return. O Prince of Peace, our elder brother, return soon! UNISON: Amen.

q O F F E R I N G PSALM 4:4-5 In your anger do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. Offer right sacrifices and trust in the LORD. Please fill in the pew attendance pad, pass it down the pew and then back.

q P R O C L A M A T I O N ISAIAH 2:1-5 1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it, 3 and many peoples shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. 5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord. LEADER: This is the Word of the Lord. PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.

p Second Advent Scripture MARK 13:26-27, 32-33

LEADER: At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens. . . No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
