Chairman's Report
11m sure it comes as no suprise that the nationa1 reputation of any university
affi1iated department or scho01 is based on its research accomp1ishments. Based on
this criterion, our department and KUMC, in genera1, are improving but obvious1yhave a 10ng way to go before their academic stature is recognized. This is not to
detract from the importance of teach ing; in that category our department is
extreme1y conscientious and compares favorab1y with any physi010gy department inthe country. It just recognizes the facts of academic 1ife: that research is the
key e1ement in university reputations.
From research accomp1ishments f10ws the associated benefits of service on the
nationa1 1eve1: study section assignments, offices in scientific societies,
editoria1 boards of prestigious journa1s, guest seminars, invitations to meetings, etc. I be1ieve we have this potentia1; otherwise I never wou1d have been inter-
ested in the chairmanship. In fact, I view this as my main responsibi1ity: to
provide as much encouragement and nagging, if necessary, to have the Physi010gy
Department at KUMC recognized as one of the top departments in the country.
This can on1y be accomp1ished by sustained hard work on the part of every
facu1ty member. Our objectives shou1d inc1ude:
1. A minimum of two papers - pub1ished or in press - each year.
2. Grant support on the nationa1 1eve1 for every facu1ty member. The size of the
grant is of 1imited concern. It is important to be continua11y productive -
which pays off in continued grant support.
3. An increase in the number of post-doctora1 fellows which will result
especially from the academic reputation of the staff and wi11 feedback onitems 1 and 2.
4. Greater representation of the department in service functions on the nationa1
1eve1: study sections, editoria1 boards, etc.
This isnlt a pipe dream. These are tangib1e goa1s, within our grasp. Ibe1ieve welre on the move but the principa1 goa1 of academic exce11ence viaresearch must constant1y be kept in mind.
To get off the soap box and back to the present: The two positions vacant the
past year have been fi11ed with the arriva1 on August 1, 1980, of Dr. Thomas Imigand Dr. Dennis Va1enzeno on September 1, 1980. We1come to the fami1y~ Dr. He1en
Cooke res igned on June 1, 1980, and a search is on for her rep1acement. I amconfident this position wi11 be fi11ed by the next annua1 report.
A11 in a11, this has been a good year for the department but we must strive to
make each year better than the one before.
