From AfarThe Magi (singular: magus) were astrologers from a culture east of Jerusalem, perhaps Persia (Iran). Certainly they knew much less about the celestial bodies of planets and stars than we do, but their mission was to discover and assess the “signs” in the sky. One of the signs believed by them to indicate the birth of a new king, was a star at a specific time and place. “We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” King Herod had no newborn son, so who is this “King of the Jews?” Keep reading the Gospels and you’ll discover the identity of this “king.” In 33 years this newborn will be an adult who will be on trial before Pontius Pilate who asks, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus is not the kind of king anyone expected. Not Herod. Not the Jews. Not the world. Yet here we are joining the magi in offering homage. Like them, we are called to offer him our best gifts not only today but every day of the year that is only 5 days old. May we all rededicate ourselves on this Feast of the Epiphany to daily efforts in our relationship to the Lord and the church. May we give our best now and throughout 2020.
“Our hope is not in the new year, but in the One
who makes all things new.”—Unknown

from our
Pastoral MinisterIn our Gospel proclamation this weekend, as we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, we hear the Magi inquiring “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” (Mt 2:2) The Magi are drawn to the majesty of this bright, morning star as it provides them with guidance, awakens in them a sense of hope and eventually provides the Magi with a joy in encountering the one whom they have been seeking –Jesus Christ, the King of Kings. For it is Jesus alone who is the fulfillment of all the prophetic words of being the true light of the world, which he Himself declares in the book of Revelation: “I, Jesus, sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the root and offspring of David, the bright morning star.” (Rev 22:16) The bright morning star appears in the sky just before sunrise with a soft, luminous glow indicating that the night is almost over and that the sun will soon shine in all its brightness. When Jesus arises in our heart he alone dispels the darkness of sin and death, flooding our heart and soul anew with the light of his love, mercy and grace. We are forever changed and begin to see the beauty of this world and each other with a renewed and pronounced clarity. Most importantly, the light of Christ gently draws our gaze towards him assuring us that the hope of eternal life spent in union with him is well placed and grants us a peace and joy which surpasses all things.
The definition of epiphany means “an intuitive grasp of reality through something (such as an event) usually simple and striking; an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure” May you too like the Magi experience an epiphany of God’s grace, through the
everyday moments of your essential life. Ask Jesus to open the eyes of your heart to recognize his presence anew and to be enlivened in your faith, so you can shine his radiant light to the world around you.
“Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable.
You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until
day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” (2Pet 1:19)

A Prayer for the JourneyThe following prayer, almost 1,000 years old, was written for pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) — 500 miles across northern Spain. Use this adaption as you journey into the new year:
God, you called your servant Abraham from Ur in Chaldea, watching over him in all his wanderings, and guided the Hebrew people as they crossed the desert. Guard your children, who seek to grow in you this year. Be their companion on the way, their guide at the crossroads, their strength in weariness, their defense in dangers, their shelter on the path, their shade in the heat, their light in the darkness, their comfort in discouragement, and the firmness of their intentions. Through your guidance, may they be enriched with grace and virtue, and be filled with salutary and lasting joy.

Book ClubWe will be meeting on January 16, 2020 in the Hospitality Room at 1:30pm to discuss Agatha Christie"s book "And Then There Were None" Copies of the book will be available at the Riverview Veterans Memorial Library, under St. Cyprian Book Club.
And Then There Were None is Agatha Christie's bestselling novel, with over 100 million copies sold worldwide.
It is a thrilling murder mystery. When ten people are invited to Soldier Island by a mysterious character, U. N. Owen, the guests find themselves in a dangerous situation as they watch each other get picked off one by one according to an old nursery rhyme.

Love in actionMartin Luther King Jr., whose life and legacy we honor this month, spoke often about the power of love. In fact, he equated the practice of nonviolence with “absolute commitment to the way of love.”
Love, declared the minister and activist, “is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” And, he said, anyone who’s “devoid of the power to love” is “devoid of the power to forgive.”
King distinguished between true love and “empty sentimentalism,” however. He taught — and showed — that love is “the active outpouring of one’s whole being into the being of another.”
Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the ultimate “active outpouring” of love, and we can choose to follow his example daily.
“Because of Calvary I’m free to choose,” writes Max Lucado in When God Whispers Your Name. “No occasion justifies hatred; no injustice warrants bitterness. I choose love. Today I will love God and what God loves.” (newsletternewsletter.com)

Thursday, January 16 Interfaith Dialogue
Western Christianity can respond to religious pluralism by fearfully building walls or by connecting with each other in ways that will allow us all to draw closer to God and care for creation. Join us as we reflect on Interfaith Dialogue – what it means, how our understanding has evolved and how it allows us to respect and honor the faith traditions of others without compromising our own beliefs.

Stewardship ThoughtsToday, in St. Matthew’s Gospel, the evangelist shares how John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. In the Second Reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Peter stresses how ... Beginning in Galilee after the baptism ... God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. This act of grace begins Christ’s public ministry of proclaiming the Good News and bringing salvation to the world. Our own Baptism calls us to discipleship in Christ, and Jesus continually knocks on the door of our hearts to deepen this discipleship. When we let Him in — make Him personal in our lives — we better express our discipleship through the sharing of our God-given gifts in gratitude with our parish, the Archdiocese, and the community at large. Make time to take the St. Austin Spiritual Gifts Inventory at www.staustin.org/spiritual-gifts-inventory to discover your gifts.
Seasons of MindfulnessIn this New Year we look for something fresh. Let’s bring the practice of mindfulness to our everyday lives!Winter: time of deepening, bringing mindfulness to our body awareness, walking, eating, driving…
