Required Summer Reading Assignment for All Incoming 8th
Graders:
The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton
Overview: A heroic story of friendship and belonging
No one ever said life was easy. But Ponyboy is pretty sure that he's got things figured out. He knows that he can count on
his brothers, Darry and Sodapop. And he knows that he can count on his friends—true friends who would do anything for
him, like Johnny and Two-Bit. And when it comes to the Socs—a vicious gang of rich kids who enjoy beating up on
"greasers" like him and his friends—he knows that he can count on them for trouble. But one night someone takes things
too far, and Ponyboy's world is turned upside down...
Choose one additional novel or the nonfiction book from the reading list
and complete the 8th
grade graphic organizer for each (GO fiction format on page 10; nonfiction recording sheet on
page 12):
The Story of Science: Aristotle Leads the Way by Joy Hakim: Readers will travel back in time to ancient
Babylonia, Egypt, and Greece. They will meet the world's first astronomers, mathematicians, and physicists and explore the lives and
ideas of such famous people as Pythagoras, Archimedes, Brahmagupta, al-Khwarizmi, Fibonacci, Ptolemy, St. Augustine, and St.
Thomas Aquinas. Hakim will introduce them to Aristotle—one of the greatest philosophers of all time—whose scientific ideas
dominated much of the world for eighteen centuries.
Rumble Fish by S. E. Hinton: Rusty-James is the top tough guy among junior high kids, but what he wants most of all is to be just like
his older brother, the Motorcycle Boy, the toughest, most respected street fighter.
The Call of the Wild by Jack London: Part St. Bernard, part Scotch shepherd, Buck is a sturdy crossbreed canine accustomed to a
comfortable life as a family dog -- until he's seized from his pampered surroundings and shipped to Alaska to be a sled dog. There, the forbidding
landscape is as harsh as life itself during the gold rush of the 1890s.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne: When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his
belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far away,
where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new
place than meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life and circumstances are very different to his own,
and their meeting results in a friendship that has devastating consequences.
