February HQU Meeting Presentation

"Panels as Art Quilts" At the March meeting, Joyce Hughes will tell us about using "Panels as Art Quilts." Check out info about Joyce in the attached flyer. Joyce's workshop will be on Friday, March 8 at Warrenton Presby-terian Church. Come, join us! She will be bringing kits ($15) that include all the materi-als you need except thread. You may bring your thread from home, or purchase Mettler thread from Joyce. There are a few spaces left in the workshop. If interested, contact Mary Anne Sykes ([email protected])

HQU Quilt Auction Donations

HQU Auction April 6th – What’s a Quilt Auction without Quilts? Please think about donating quilts of any size, even tops! Quilts are a very popular item that people bid on. Also, consid-er donating a fun quilting-related experience/service/talent to the auction! A trip to the Vir-ginia Quilt Museum or a local quilt show and lunch? Binding a quilt? Teaching a one-on-one class on your specialty (paper piecing? Hexies? Applique?)? Think about what would excite you to bid on, and think about providing that for others to bid on. It’s easy to donate – just write up what you are donating, include a retail value, and email it to Helen Loera at [email protected]. And if you are cleaning out your sewing room, consider donating items to the auction. Helen and the Auction Committee are still accepting donations.

HQU Upcoming Workshops in 2019 April Workshop

Early Bird Corner

Want to get more sewing done daily? Want to finish more projects than you do

now? Then the March early bird demo is tailor made just for you! Come hear tips and tricks from our own Kathi Ca-pellini, the QUEEN of getting

more done!! See you at 6:45pm before the business

meeting starts!!

Preview for APRIL!

The early bird demo for April is “Coloring and Quilting”!

How could coloring and quilting go together? Here is

one idea to try the technique. Make a pillow. If you enjoy

yourself you can make a wall hanging and quilt it to your

heart’s delight. You could use free motion and lots of pretty thread colors. You could also

make any small items like little bags, needle books

etc. Come see a short demo of this technique and try a

little bit of coloring yourself.

Community Service News

Why HQU's Mission (as a non - profit) in education and community service is IMPORTANT

Our goals are for each member to contribute in some way to charities by piecing, quilting,

or binding, etc., lap quilts, drawstring bags, making hospital shawls, sewing lap quilts for the

nursing home (size 45x45"), new Habitat for Humanity homes gifts of lap or bed quilts. Take

fabric from the free table(2 tables in February!) - good practice for beginners, use up your

own stash- or add it to a kit.

Do you know of a church mission group that wants charity fabric projects?

Tell Betty who keeps a list.

YOU do NOT need to feel like an expert quilter to do this and PLEASE show your project

during Sew N Tell. We admire anyone creating a simple charity project, work with a friend

or your bee, AND let's set a goal of every member helping with at least one project in 2019.

Smile right now if you are already a---

Pretty Piecer- many of you have used your own fabric, worked at home and Community

Service Bee days with donated fabric to complete tops, Quilting Queen-at least 11 members

having finished projects by doing the quilting, Beautiful Binder- a couple of great volunteers

here, Pillowcase Powerhouse - Wounded Warrior Retreat visitors are getting a lot with De-

livery Divas-Linda B and Betty soon to deliver 14, including several being made by 2 bees as

their February meeting day project. CASA is another charity that gives these to foster chil-

dren from us. Betty delivered 7 flannel quilts, 5 cotton quilts, and 2 Bereavement blankets

to the hospital.

Would you like to help during a big HQU workday for our charity projects? Perhaps the 1st

one could be our Friday March Big Bee- please think about if you would participate. Picture

a foster child getting your project- yep- a real good feeling isn't it?-- Pat Widener

Quilt Sisters We are putting out an urgent call for Quilt Sisters! We have had a bunch of new HQU

members and we would love to have another Guild member help to make them feel at

home. You do not have to have been a long time member of our guild in order to be-

friend a newer member so "feel the love" and volunteer. Please contact Martha Scott

by email: [email protected].

WARRIOR RETREAT UPDATES!

Questions? Contact Linda Bowlin at [email protected]

Quilts The 3 beautiful quilts, created by Cindy Simms, quilted by Joseph McGowan and bound by Polly Monica, that were shown at the February Sew and Tell were donated to the Warrior Retreat. We have now donated 15 quilts to the Warrior Retreat. With one more quilt dona-tion, each bed in both the Lang House and the New PennFed House will have a new quilt on it. How fantastic is that?! Thank you to all who helped this request become a reality! The Warriors cer-tainly deserve it! Our new goal is to provide another 18 quilts. By having additional quilts the volunteers will be able to make the beds, putting a different quilt on it, while the others are being washed and dried. By alternating the quilts the volunteers will not need to dry the quilts at a high heat to speed the drying time. This will save wear and tear on the quilts, keeping them looking nicer longer. Please consider working with your bee or friends to make a top as we start on our new goal. Pillowcases At the February meeting we received 59 pillowcases! Thank you to Mary Walsh, Jackie Clattenburg, Carol Proven, Marlene Peterson, the Bedazzled Bee and everyone whose names I did not get.To date we have donated 320 pillowcases. Pretty amazing! Thank you to all who have helped! During February Sew and Tell the Bedazzled Bee showed the pillowcases they made at their bee charity day and challenged other bees to make pillow-cases as well! Will your bee take up the challenge?
