ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Thethingabouthavingamixedchorusisthatyouwillneverrunoutoffantasticmusictoprogram.SATBhasbeenthestandardchoraltextureforcenturies,andthepoolofrepertoireisbottomless.Thisprogramgrewoutofadesiretomovebeyondthetyrannyofthemixed‐voicemostly‐four‐partrepertoire,toenjoythesonoritiesthatareproducedbywomen’sandmen’svoicesalone,andtoexploresomeofthefantasticmusicthathasbeenwrittenforthem.(The“battleofthesexes”anglecamelater,fromourmarketingdepartment.That’snotreallywhattheconcertisabout,andI’mnotabigfanoftheclichésaboutgenderdifferences.Iwillsay,however,thatinoursegregatedrehearsals,thewomenwereveryfocusedandtask‐oriented.Themenmostlywantedtotalkabouttheirfeelings.)

Therepertoirethatourwomenaresingingisparticularlyfine,andallofitbycontemporaryAmericancomposers:aninventivesetofthreecontrastingpiecesbyLibbyLarsen;twoplayfulandgorgeoussettingsofMaySwensonpoemsbyGwynethWalker;JamesMulholland’sheart‐on‐its‐sleevesettingofEmilyDickinson’s“Heart!WeWillForgetHim,”featuringFrenchhorn;andourfriendBradleyEllingboe’smarvelous“GettingUsedtoHeavens,”writtenforanAlaskanall‐statetreblechorusin2006.It’sallwonderfulstuffforourwomentosing.

Still,asAliceParkersays:peoplecanbelukewarmaboutwomen’schoruses,butnobodydoesn’tliketohearmensing.Ourtenorsandbassesgettoofferawidervarietyofrepertoirethanthewomendo:anItalianpartsongbySchubert(whowrotevolumesoffantasticmusicformen’schorus;Iwouldlovetodoanentireconcertofit),anarrangementofthatgreatRussianmotet“SalvationisCreated”;acreativemashupversionof“AmazingGrace”and“HouseoftheRisingSun”;AliceParkerandRobertShaw’sirresistiblearrangementof“ViveL’Amour,”(whichscholarsunanimouslyagreeisprobablyan18thor19thcenturydrinking‐orcampfire‐orfolksong,whoseoriginsareeitherFrench,EnglishorAmerican);and–requiredbystatuteonanyconcertofmen’smusic–arollickingandvaguelymisogynisticseachantey.

WecombineforfavoriteworksofRandallThompson.ThesevenpiecesthatcompriseFrostianahavebeenwell‐lovedandwidelyperformedsincetheywerepremieredin1959.ThesetwascommissionedtomarkthebicentennialofthefoundingofthetownofAmherst,Massachusetts.RobertFrost’spoetrywaschosenbecauseofhislongassociationwithAmherstCollege,andbecauseheandThompsonwereadmirersofeachother’swork.Likemanycommunitiesatthattime,Amhersthadseparatechoralsocietiesformenandwomen.Indeferencetothelimitedcombinedrehearsaltime,Thompsonsettwoofthepoemsforthemen’schorus,twoforthewomen’schorus,andthreefortheircombinedforces.Thompsonconductedthepremiere,andFrostwasonthefrontrowoftheaudience.ThereareconflictingaccountsofFrost’sopinionofthesettings,butthemost‐repeatedstoryhasitthatwhenthelastchordof“ChooseSomethingLikeaStar”faded,Frostleapttohisfeetandshouted“Singthatagain!”(Weprobablywon’t,butyou’rewelcometotry.)

OurprogramendswithRandallThompson’s“Alleluia,”writtenin1940fortheopeningconvocationoftheBerkshireMusicFestival(nowTanglewood),andsungatthesameceremonyeveryyearsince.Besidesbeingagloriousexplorationofthecoloravailabletoachorusofmixedvoices,somewouldarguethat“Alleluia”isthemostbelovedsinglepieceofchoralmusicofthelastcentury.

Finally,itmustbesaidthatmosteverythingonthisfinalprogramofourseasonhappenstobeaccompaniedbypiano,andbydesignfeaturesmyfavoritepianist,whohappenstobefemale,andwithwhomIcouldtalkaboutmyfeelingsalldaylong,andwhoneverfailstoinspireinmeconfidence,creativityandawkwardrun‐onsentences.

Matthew Greer was appointed Artistic Director of Quintessence in 2009. He also serves asDirectorofMusicandWorshipMinistriesatSt. John'sUnitedMethodistChurch inAlbuquerque,wherehedirectsseveralchoirsandoverseesacomprehensivemusicprogram.HealsoservesasArtisticDirector forQuintessence: ChoralArtistsof theSouthwest.AtSt. John's,he foundedthehighlysuccessful"MusicatSt.John's"concertseries,and"ThursdayEveningMusicales,"anannualseries of benefit concerts forAlbuquerqueHealthcare for theHomeless. In recent years, he hasconducted performances of Mozart’s Requiem, Durufle's Requiem, Handel's Messiah, and KarlJenkins'TheArmedMan:AMass forPeace. Inaddition,Greerhas lecturedonandconductedthemusicofBrahms,Bach,Copland,andBarber. Inspringof2012,hewasamongtherecipientsofCreative Albuquerque's Bravos! AmyGreerisanactiveperformer,bothasasoloistandincollaborationwithsingersandinstrumentalists.SheholdsaMasterofMusicin piano performance and aMaster of Arts in educational psychology. Recognized for her creative approach to traditional pianolessons, she has maintained successful piano studios in New Mexico, Massachusetts, Texas, and Missouri and regularly givesworkshopsthatfocusonthepsychologyoflearningthroughamusician’slens.Awriterandfrequentcontributortomusicjournals,shehasbeenacolumnistforAmericanMusicTeachermagazine.ShehasperformedwiththeNewMexicoSymphonyOrchestra,theSantaFeSymphony,andNewMexicoPhilharmonic,andisonehalfoftheJimGreerDuo,afluteandpianoduo.Shekeepshouseandtendsagardenforoneverycuteman,twolazycatsandthreefeistybettafish.

Born on the Navajo Reservation, Jerome Jim is a versatile musician with styles ranging from traditional Native American to theclassicalfluterepertoire.HeappearedwiththeGrandCanyonMusicFestivalintheworldpremiereofGuardiansoftheGrandCanyonbycomposerBrentMichaelDavids.HewasfeaturedontheNPRprogram“NativeAmericaCalling.”HehasalsoperformedatnumerousUniversityofNewMexicopubliceventsplayingNativeAmericanworks.HereceivedhisundergraduatedegreefromtheUniversityofNewMexicoinEuropeanMusicalPerformanceinaCulturalContext,adegreethatencompassesmusic,history,arthistory,literature,andlanguages.In2003,heattendedtheConservatoriumvanAmsterdaminAmsterdam,TheNetherlandstofurthermusicalstudies,andwhiletherepursuedresearchontheEarlyRomanticoperaticsopranoGiudittaPasta.Hisprimaryfluteteachers includeValeriePotter and the late FrankBowen.In his spare time,Mr. Jim enjoys reading, cooking, eating, listening to very bad electronicmusic,watchingYouTube,andworkingout.Whenheisnotengagedinfrivolouspursuits–suchasmakingmusic–helikestoteachhistwoChihuahuastodosillytricksandbarkendlesslyatsmallchildren.
