Teresa Correia (1839-1876), the bishop-count’s sister, was married to Manoel Francisco Portal. Nowadays, the huge property belongs to the children of the well-known doctor Abel Portal and his German wife Edith. They are Teresa Correia’s grandchildren.

•These are traces of the primitive, simple and traditional rural house which was the headquarters of the farm (Quinta da Costeira), where António Correia de Bastos Pina lived. Back then he was already considered the wealthy rural owner of the Carregosa parish and the President of Oliveira de Azeméis City Council.

António Correia de Bastos Pina (1852 – 1854)He is the Coimbra bishop-count’s father.

His influence in the community’s life:- He ordered the pavement of the

street in front of the City Council and many other streets in the city.

- He supplied furniture for the municipal primary schools.

- He took hygienic and sanitary measures to stop cholera spread...

• Short biography:• The bishop-count was born

on the 19th November 1830 and died on the 19th November 1913.

• He was the 22nd Arganil count and the 57th Coimbra bishop from 1872 until 1913.

•Manuel Correia de Bastos Pina, the future bishop, took a degree in Law at the Coimbra University. He was a lawyer for several years.•He was the

only enthroned bishop without any degree in Theology.

Manuel Correia de Bastos Pina, Coimbra bishop and Arganil count

•The Bragança bishop ordained him a priest (when he was 24 years) and named him vicar of that diocese.

•In Viseu he was named chapter vicar in 1859, the diocese governor in 1865 and Coimbra bishop in 1872.

•He was probably the closest bishop to the Royalty.•He was Queen Amélia´s

close friend. They frequently wrote each other letters.•Ideologically, Manuel

Bastos Pina was simultaneously monarchic and one of the greatest followers/defenders of the papal policy in Portugal.•For him, everything that

came from Rome was to be put into practice.

King Manuel II • The bishop-count was the

godfather of King Manuel II, the 35th and last king of Portugal.

• King Manuel II was in Carregosa on the 24th July 1910, and in a very special way he visited Manuel Correia de Bastos Pina in Costeira Farm.

•The old rural house inherited by the bishop-count from his father was enlarged as a result of the demand to deal with the important social requests and the facility to take advantage from local qualified workforce.

•He created the Religious Art Museum in the cathedral, which is still one of the most important nuclei of the Machado Castro Museum nowadays.• The Religious Art

Museum is a Bastos Pina’s attempt to save most of the art from convents and some churches.

•The restoration of Coimbra Old Cathedral was possible thanks to three special people: António Augusto Gonçalves, Manuel Bastos Pina and Queen Amélia.•To restore it, Manuel

Bastos Pina took carvers and joiners from Carregosa parish.•They also restored

the high-altar of Coimbra Old Cathedral.

•Manuel Bastos Pina ordered the construction of one of the first working-class neighbourhood in Portugal for 15 families. That neighbourhood was in Quinta de Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz Farm) in Coimbra and it was ready in 1898.

•There were several bishop-count’s campaigns for public health. He was one of the greatest Queen Amélia’s supporters in the Tuberculosis case. He also wrote pastoral texts about hygiene habits, including those inside churches and defended the burial in cemeteries.•Social concern was also referred to in his

Episcopal munus. In fact, one of the biggest concerns of the Coimbra bishop was “giving” work to people.

The Marian facet of this Catholic bishop is also evident with the construction of the sanctuary next to his familiar residence in Quinta da Costeira. It was inaugurated on the 31st August 1902. For that event, 5 bishops and 8-9 thousand people attended the ceremony.

• As a consequence of the significant world echo of Lourdes Sanctuary, the bishop-count builds a cave in his residence in the farm in honour of Lourdes apparitions, with images of Our Lady and the young Bernardette Soubirous.

•The interior of the sanctuary which highlights the paintings on the ceiling and tiles made by artists from Carregosa.

•With the introduction of the republican regime and the death of the bishop-count in 1913, the sanctuary became a place for local religious use.•It is still used for

festivities in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes on the first Sunday of August.

•When the Republic was established, Manuel Bastos Pina left Coimbra to the house he had built in Quinta da Costeira and stayed there for a long time. When he went back to Coimbra, the Episcopal palace had already been occupied.•Therefore, he had to

accept his nephew’s host. The poet Eugénio de Castro was his nephew.
