Joyce Gravell has been sewing for most of her life. She enjoys creating and finishing projects from begin-ning to end. As a young girl, she learned to crochet first, then built on an interest in sewing. Though her mother did some sewing, for the most part she was self-taught. She made her own clothes, her husband’s shirts and sports jackets, and many “crafty items for their home. Her sons even enlisted her to make special dresses for their prom dates plus all of the “finery” that goes with that kind of an event!

She always admired and was interested in quilts, but found that quilting takes a tremendous amount of time. So, during her working career, she could only devote the time to making simple quilts promising herself to tackle more elaborate projects when she re-tired. So, after retirement in 2003, she began taking classes and joined the Sun Country Quilt Guild. She now spend lots of time designing and sewing quilts, as well as learning more about the art of quilting.

“Quilting is truly an art form. I find that I love the variety of color and the texture of fabric and blend-ing them together. I also really enjoy working at the local quilt shop and helping customers who come into the shop,” Joyce explains. Further elaborating, “ A friend of mine, who was also a customer, died a year and a half ago. Her husband came into the shop and asked if I would teach him to quilt. He has now completed several quilts and finds comfort in continuing his wife’s hobby.”

She favors quilt designs that tend to be traditional, but also continues to learn from the great quilters we have today to expand her horizons. She enjoys trying new ideas and states, “If only my hands were in better shape, I would be doing hand-quilting and fine appliqué.

. . . to this issue, you may notice that a new section has been added to the quarterly, Classroom Display. It has come to this editor’s attention that, unlike the collections that are displayed on the walls of the showroom, there is quite a quantity of fine quilts that “magically” appear hanging on the walls of the classroom, some for only a couple of days, others for weeks at a time. Many are brought in by attendees of the various Sew-Ins, others are representative of classes that are scheduled. Still others are individually hung by frequent customers for purely display purposes. Our readers may also notice that many are labeled as “quilter unknown.” This is because many quilts that are exhibited have no labels or paper tags pinned to them detailing the title, the name of the quilter, nor the date of creation. As this editor is not available in the shop at all times, nor is he “psychic” in getting information from “the great beyond,” he has to rely on tags, labels, or word of mouth to attribute proper credit to a particular work. For future issues we hope that information crediting the quilter is provided for each piece that ishung and featured. If not, we will respect the quilter’s anonynimity.

Get the Word Out!Quilt’n Thyme News, with a circulation of over 700 customers, spanning local, statewide, and out-of-state locales, who have signed up to receive this Quarterly, provides you with an excellent resource for getting the word out about the services you offer.

A free quarterly placement of your scanned business card is available upon request. If you want to be listed in this publication, please sign up with us at [email protected] and drop your card off at our store for placement consideration by store management.

Future offerings of quarter-page, half-page, and even full-page advertising placements are being considered to provide opportunities for additional exposure. An independent contractor is available to assist you in the development of such ads.

Management reserves the right to reject any ad request or submission. Any requests for placing ads for competing quilt shops, sewing and fabric stores,

department stores and outlets, etc. will not be accepted.

As a postscript . . . . “Methinks it is a token of healthy and gentle characteristics, when women of high thoughts and accomplishments love to sew, expecially as they are never more at home with their own hearts than while so occupied”

Nathaniel Hawthorne
