Manhattan, New York is the place that brought us all together. The City’s precise geometric grid was our inspiration from the start. Our idea was to follow it as closely as possible while embracing the multi-cultural essence of the island. Each vertical seam represents one New York City avenue, elongated on the West Side and square on the East. The horizontal seams represent 2 blocks from 14 th Street all the way to 68 th . The color inspiration came from our shared love for New York City evenings with their vibrant sunsets and rich shadows. While gazing at the quilt you can also discover iconic New York landmarks: Central Park, Lincoln Center, Times Square, Grand Central Station, Hudson Yards, the Highline and a few others. Team G3 (Plus) Mike Iovinelli(G3) Jess MacNair(G3) Stacy Marcus(Izzy+) Stacey Santoro(J+J Flooring Group) Hours logged to make the quilt: Lots!! Inspirational ideas and concepts to create the design: Modern. Bold. Graphic. Architectural. We worked semi-backwards this year and let large swatches of discarded fabric inspire us. We wanted to use the large pieces as a base and add texture to them by using a top stitch. We ultimately ended up using an image of a moody seascape image as the main inspiration for the overall line work as well as the color palette. The image has a beautiful blue-grey gradation throughout along with stark contrasts of white. The multiple blue lines on our quilt represent the fluid motion of the water which gradates all the way up into the bright white sky. The top stitch creates a texture similar to that of rippling water.

Team IIDA NY Abigail French Suzette Rhodes Brian Bates Silvia Chan Special Thanks to Bonnie Ansbro & Steve South for their help in laying the pattern out in Autocad!!!! Hours logged to make the quilt: Don’t ask Inspirational ideas and concepts to create the design: This year we were inspired by an exhibit hosted by the American Museum of Folk Art held at the Park Avenue Amory in 2011. This exhibit featured 650 quilts owned by New York City collector Joanna S. Rose. All 650 quilt were red & white with strong graphic patterns. We pay homage this year to Joanna S. Rose for her appreciation of the art of quilting. Also in keeping with our sustainable efforts our team repurposed the materials from another IIDA NY event, Color Invasion. You may recognize some of the textiles from Color Invasion. They were the large fabrics hung on the walls. Typically these decorations are discarded and our team asked if we could use them for the quilt.

Team Ted Moudis Associates Katie Buhl Florence Apana Taren Galeano Rachana Kenkare Rachel Reding Nicole Bacani Sarah Maggiolo Rebecca Norrod Alyssa Moudis Justin Mardex Helen Rose Condon Gloria Cardenas Nicole Moudis Connie In Hours logged to make the quilt: 130 Inspirational ideas and concepts to create the design: This beautifully detailed quilt, designed and sewn by the TMA team, takes the idea of displaying these beautiful and sustainable fabrics and uses Nature’s “ Exhibitionist” as the perfect model. Inspired by Gustav Klimt’s patterned murals, a strict palette was utilized in order to highlight the changing geometric patterns from horizontal shades of grey to the abstract radial plumage. Trimming and sequence are incorporated to support this concept. If you look closely you will see that each eye is individually embroidered with silver thread. Each of these eyes showcases the hand of the individual crafter. This quilt embodies the idea of community inherent to the idea of a Quilting Bee, bringing together people from all departments within the office, forming new friendships and crafting a beautiful quilt, while serving as special way to celebrate the life of our former coworker Lillian Kim, whose personality and style were the inspiration for the peacock.

Team C3 Designs Cyndi + Daniel Tillman Hours logged to make the quilt: 142 hours Inspirational ideas and concepts to create the design: The quilt is based on an iconic image of Coney Island promoter George Tilyou, who lived from 1862-1914. I see it as being a uniquely New York image. He was an integral part of the growth of Coney Island and his image continues to drive what is now Luna Park. I was drawn to the graphic quality and the slightly un-nerving stare. As a quilter, this was a departure from my past quilts and I enjoyed the challenge of trying to capture what makes this image so fantastic. I hope that it's successful.
