    Noiseiseverywhere.Itaffectsourlivesathome,atworkandgenerallyeverywhere.Whereverpeoplelive

    thereisnoise.

    Noise,bydefinition,isanyunwantedorexcessivesound.Intheworldtoday,noisehasbecomeoneofthe

    mostubiquitousformsofenvironmentalpollution.

    Intraffic,noiseisagrowingproblem,especiallywithinurbanareas.Noiseemissionoftrafficvehiclesis

    dominatedwiththenoiseproducesbytires.Thatkindofnoiseisinfluencedbythecharacteristics ofthe

    roadsurface,likeacousticabsorptionandsurfacetexture.Thecommonnoisereductionmeasuresinclude

    noisebarriersthatpreventsoundpropagationfromtheroadwaystotheurbanareas.Thosemeasuresare

    veryexpensiveandineffectiveinmanyurbanareas.

    Construction ofquieterpavementsisconsideredtobeapromisingengineeringtechniqueforsustainable

    andenvironmentalfriendlyroads.

    opportunitytoplaywiththepavementsurfacemixesandsurfacetexturestoreducethenoise.

    Examplespresentedherealsoshowedthattechniquesareavailabletoreducethenoisewithout

    sacrificingthesafetyanddurability.

    However,carefulselectionandconstructionisthekeytoachievebeneficialnoisereductionbythe

    pavementitself.
