Since the Marketing Seminar in January at the APBA National Meeting, we have been assembling tools for APBA members. A series of articles in both SPIN and PROPELLER appeared as a supplement to the seminar. The articles provide in-depth information on critical issues, such as finding sponsorship, how to construct a proposal, as well as event publicity, marketing and promotion. We aim to provide a road map to finding sponsors, troubleshooting event problems, and dealing with issues in the fast lane.

Currently we are focusing on sponsorship. The days of sticking out your hand and asking for a donation are gone, but you need money to hold a race. In the no-free-lunch world of event production, the answer is sponsorship.

Seeking sponsorship at any level is a tough job. You need persistence, knowledge and passion—and it may be helpful to read and keep From HERE to THERE articles for future reference. There are no guarantees, but the information can help you choose a strategy; and the step-by-step format should point you in the right direction to uncover the resources required to create a successful event.

The January Marketing Seminar included an overview: The Universal Event Guide, a Storehouse of Information—the Means and Methods of Getting from Here (an idea) to There (a successful event/race). It is currently available on the APBA website: https://www.apba.org/file/2017apba-marketing-seminar .

The conversation started with APBA and how using our national sanctioning organization is critical to your success. Subsequent articles pointed out the need to establish brand identity and discussed how each of us can be a part of promoting the APBA brand.

Understanding that money (or the lack of money) is on everyone’s mind, a two-part, in-depth exploration of sponsorship benefits has been developed to explain how to maximize them and why they are important. The first part can be found in the May issue of PROPELLER.

Part two of creating sponsorship benefits, “Blue Chip Investments,” will appear in the July issue of Propeller.

Future articles will provide information on funding and income resources, writing effective media releases, and answering questions that you may have.

Need specific help? Ask. We are available via email: Jean Mackay – [email protected] or Sherron Winer – [email protected].

We encourage you to set new goals, imagine new possibilities, expand your races and make them successful. There is no magic—no mystical formula behind creating a great event with solid funding and sponsorship as long as you have two things: enthusiasm and a road map.

You supply the enthusiasm, we offer the road map—essential information in a practical, easy-to-use format that will get all of us From Here to There.

On June 10 & 11th, East Bay Boat Club (EBBC) will be hosting “A Nice Summer Race” in Copperopolis, at the Salt Springs Valley Reservoir, located just 25 miles from the historic town of Angels Camp, California.

Stock, MOD, PRO, Cracker Box, Sport C, and SST45 will be featured, with a DUX boat exhibition rounding out the program. The 2- and 3-cylinder outboards and Inboards will run on an approximately 1-mile course. An exceptionally wet California winter has filled the reservoir beyond full capacity, allowing the setup of an excellent course for competition as well as testing for upcoming divisional and national events.

Opening ceremonies will start at 11 AM, with races beginning at noon and running until about 4 PM. The best viewing area will be on the levee overlooking the course. Following the races on Saturday, Ryan Morris and Brian Rodrigues will host an “Old Fashioned Saturday Night Family BBQ.” The menu features tri-tip, hot dogs, hamburgers, beans, corn, green salad and beverages.

Region 11 was recently selected by the Stock Outboard Commission to be part of building the 300SSH class and growing driver numbers. The 300SSH program, with the support of the APBA Historical Society, promotes the APBA mantra, “breaking down the barriers to entry” for new racers. A new 300SSH rig—complete with boat, engine, prop and cart—will be available at an event to race, and may be purchased onsite. The buyer can take it home and race it at the next event.

With special thanks to RJ West, EBBC will be unveiling its new Composite Craft 300SS Hydro at Salt Springs, complete with engine and prop. Some special thanks also to Tom Johnston, who works tirelessly standardizing, sealing and shipping the 300SS Yamato engines; and to Vic Brinkman for building the propellers. Thank you, Jeff Brewster and the Stock Outboard Commission, for

making this possible in Region 11.

The history of EBBC conducting races at Salt Springs goes back over 50 years, to as early as 1965. While the racing at this venue has not been continuous, it has been popular with Region 11 racers testing equipment for upcoming races.

Angels Camp is located in the Gold Rush country of Central California. Beginning in 1848, surface gold was mined by a population of 4,000 miners. This source played out quickly, but hardrock mining kept the gold industry flourishing until very recently. The entire town rests on a honeycomb with miles of mine tunnels. Popular attractions in the area include the Moaning Caverns, an immense limestone miracle with a main cavern large enough to hold the Statue of Liberty. The Caverns are open to the public for trips and rappelling.

Three days of racing in two days are planned for Stock, MOD, PRO and J Classes. This will be the Region 11 season opener, and promises to be a good one. Mark your calendars!
