Roadside emergencies can happen to anyone at any time, unfortunately some-times these things happen at night. Whether it’s a flat tire on the car, a dead battery, or running out of gas, facing any of these problems in the dark is difficult. Secur Products has introduced the newest addition to its lineup of battery banks and emergency devices, the Four-in-One Car Charger. The SP-4002 is a 12V car charger for USB devices, flashlight, power bank, and emergency light all in one device.

The Four-in-One Car Charger easily plugs into a cigarette lighter and allows the user to con-nect any USB charging cord to the available port. The car adapter portion of the Four-in-One Car Charger is exposed after removing the magnetic base of the device. The magnetic base is designed to hold the flash-light by adhering itself to the side of the car to provide light when changing a tire, or to the hood when it is propped up to illuminate any maintenance being done.

Rainproof and built to travel, the Four-in-One Car Charger provides a unique solution for everyday travel or emergency roadside situations. Because of its compact size the Four-in-One Car Charger is ideal to store in a glove box or center console when not being used. The Four-in-One Car Charger has an MSRP of $39.99. The 17th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony was held this May at the Fair Oaks Cemetery, California.Hundreds of flags lined the roadways of the cemetery deemed “The Avenue of Flags.” The American Legion Riders (ALR) Chapter 383 and members of Clean & Sober Living of Fair Oaks placed crosses and flags on the over seventeen hundred graves of veterans buried at the Fair Oaks Cemetery the day before the event. On the day of the event, a parade of bagpipers and the American Legion Riders led by ALR President Matt Ellis rolled in on the “Avenue of Flags” to the delight of attendees. All veterans who have served our country were honored. This year’s Fair Oaks Memorial Day Ceremony’s theme paid special tribute to the “Veterans of the Civil War.” This May marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War which set the groundwork for freedom for all.The Invocation prayer as well as the closing prayer was given by Mark Rice, Chaplain American Legion Riders Chapter 383. Awreath was placed by members of AmericanLegionPost383andVeterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6158 to honor the fallenveterans buried in the Fair Oaks

Cemetery. The Fair Oaks Memorial Day Ceremony participants, including American Legion Riders from surrounding communities, and the audience thanked and honored the ultimate sacrifice given by our fallen heroes and the sacrifices of our active duty military.Let us preserve the freedom and love of country our veterans have so valiantly fought for and not take for granted our soldiers who still give of themselves for the freedom we enjoy today. The American Legion Riders, who are a group of veterans across the nation that love motorcycle riding, give thanks and recognition to all our veterans reminding us freedom is not free.

By Donald Kline

Memorial Day most people are thinking of Bar B-Q, hanging out with friends and family. For me and about six thousand others it means it is time for the West Coast Thunder bike or WCT.The starting location is in front of Riverside Harley-Davidson (RSHD) which is aptly enough is in Riverside, California. The street in front of the Dealership, Indiana Avenue is closed off to traffic from Midnight to Noon on this day. The Run goes through the streets of Riverside to the Riverside National Cemetery and then to Soboba Casino for a concert. Riders can choose to do the ride and concert or go to the Cemetery. I arrived at about 5:00 a.m. it’s a different scene when it’s dark than it is at 6:00 a.m. watching the volunteers who do registration and security, The RSHD staff setting up tables and people making pancakes, bacon and sausage to feed the riders, and the vendors from Geico Insurance and the Rear Area Support Foundation setting up. There were also tables of coffee from McDonald’s set up.Just before sun up you could see headlights and the sound of motorcycles approaching.Out on the street which was separated by a row of posts and yellow tape going down almost to Adams Street. The sides are separated for registered riders on the left and non-registered on the right. The front space of the line is for VIPs, A large flag hanging from a crane is the official head of the line.Prior to the 9:11 a.m. start time, Motor Officers from the California Highway Patrol and Riverside Police were doing demos by riding through a series of cones showing just how maneuverable they can be on two wheels.A flag and sacrifice ceremony was performed by the West Coast Thunder Honor Guard and a rifle salute was performed by team made up of members from the different branches of the Armed Forces. At 9:11 a.m. engines fired up, the run was on, escorted by police, and was led by members of the Honor Guard, cars with council members and government representatives. Riverside Mayor Rusty Bailey was riding a motorcycle with this group, I spent a few minutes talking him about

riding and the military with him and he surprise me by doing a jump over the fence - come to find out his Honor used to be a Gymnast. He asked us to rate his performance between one and three, well I got it on video and showed it to him, he rates it a two, he nailed the landing but the jump needs work.We rode up Indiana Avenue to Arlington Avenue, to Alessandro Boulevard to Trautwein Road then onto Van Buren Boulevard after about eleven miles you have a choice to go straight and be escorted all the way to Soboba Casino for the Concert or go right to Riverside National Cemetery. At the Cemetery starting at 11:00 a.m. with a prelude of Music by the Riverside Concert Band. The program included the Presentation of Colors, Pledge of Allegiance by Scouts and Cadets an Invocation, Guests, a youth speaker, Service Songs, keynote speech Benediction, Rifle Salute, Taps and a Retiring of the Colors. It was a very moving program a lot of the Veterans and family members in the audience has misty eyes. At Soboba Casino I missed the Honor Guard Ceremony but got there is time to check out the vendors and of course see Big and Rich Perform. They did several of their songs such as “8th of November” they also did a set of Michael Jackson songs with DJ Sinister and the later music included the likes of Green Day. I saw ladies in the audience jumping up and dancing a group in the back doing the two step, guest on stage included Cowboy Troy and Spider Man. The concert seem to go well judging from all the people dancing around enjoying themselves.I counted twenty four vendors setup outside, with tents for the California Motorcycle Safety Program, Bar Enterprises, Law Tigers, Road

house Biker Church, Route 66 Cigar Lounge and Bob’s Biker Bits to name a few.Of course there were food and beer vendors both of which had long lines. Part of WCT is a chance to win a brand new Harley-DavidsonIron883Sportsterbybuyingaticket. The winner of that Sportster was Manuel Acosta. In all this was a pretty big and fun run. Will definitely be back next year.

Q: Robert Thompson

Steve, I have a 2011 Victory Cross Country that I put a Lloyd’s fuel controller, air filter and WitchDoctor baffle-less slip-ons that I had welded on a better tip. They have been on since last summer with no problems. The power, sound and reliability have been great so far. But, last week I noticed a change. The intake noise was a constant flow that is now a pulsed suction. Popping on deceleration is now very loud, snappy and evenly spaced. Power has increased on acceleration. I have not made any changes since putting the fuel controller set to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Any idea what is going on here?

A: Well Robert let’s see what we’ve got going on here. Your bike ran good then not so good. Hmmm… Ok I’m done thinking. Everything you are describing sounds like an intake leak to me. The air leak will cause your bike to run lean and running lean explains the deceleration popping. The increase with acceleration could simply mean the settings you had in your fuel controller might be a tad rich in that area. You being able to hear a sound from the intake means the leak is fairly substantial which, on the plus side, means that it should be easy to find. A simple, do it yourself way to find the leak is to use brake clean in small controlled sprays in areas around the intake while the bike is running. If the idle speed changes, you’ve found the leak. If you don’t find the leak right away, you should also try spraying the injectors and sensors that go into your intake track. But with a leak as substantial as yours, I am sure you will find the problem in no time.

Q: Greg Olson

Dyno Steve, I have a ‘04 Sportster 1200. I’m having some problems bringing it out of storage. I can get the bike to start, but when I take off the choke it will sputter and die. I can rev it up, but it will not idle. I’m not very mechanical. I can change my oil, but that’s about it. I’m really hoping that there is something really easy to fix it? ~ Fingers crossed, Greg

A: Well Greg, you’re in luck; it’s a really easy fix. It sounds like your carburetors low jet is clogged. To fix this, first shut off the fuel petcock and disconnect your battery. Then, remove the air filter assembly. This will give you the access to the carb, and you will need to remove the float bowl. There will be gas inside when you remove it, so be careful not to dump it all over yourself when you take it off. Or you can just make a mess, I won’t judge you. Once you get the float bowl out, remove the low jet and unclog it by using either a jet ream or solvent. Then it is ready to be reassembled and you’re done! There are videos on YouTube (better ones than the fancy spark plug sales pitches) that can walk you step-by-step through this process.

But, if changing your oil feels like the limit of which you’d like to go, then take it to a shop. Depending on what it’s clogged with and where it came from, it can make this job a little more involved than a paragraph of text or that a 5 minute video can cover. Your bike is 11 years old now, it may need the fuel system, tank, petcock, fuel line, and carburetor to be looked at and serviced as needed.

But, Greg, I think it is great that you are pushing against your comfort zone and looking to learn how your bike works and how to maintain it properly. Getting to know your bike inside and out will help you take better care of her, and in return she’ll be a longer lasting, more agreeable girl.

Q: Brandon Maxwell Dear Tech Talk, I recently purchased a 2005 Heritage Softail with 25,000 miles. I instantly fell in love with this bike and made the purchase with little information. I am also new to Harleys. Some people have been telling me that these engines have some issues with cam chain tensioners. The info on the internet is all over the place on this topic. I’m looking for some reliable info on this. ~ Thanks for your time, Brandon.

A: This is a question that I hear more and more as these bikes start getting up there in the mileage. Cam chain tensioners are wear components in your engine - they will go bad. Now the big question is, when will they wear out and how do you catch it before they cause real damage to the engine? The biggest factor to the tensioner wearing out is how often the oil has been changed. I understand you don’t have history on this machine, so a good rule of thumb is to visually inspect them at your 30k service. There are bikes that have failed much earlier in their life, but this is not the norm. There are also some bikes cam chain tensioners that I have seen last in upwardsof 80k.Thecosttodotheinspectionisfar,farcheaperthantherepair of a catastrophic failure.

There are also upgrades to the cam compartment that extend the time between, or need for, replacements. For example, you can convert your cam chain tensioner to the newest style hydraulic tensioners. These wear at a much slower rate and therefore require less maintenance. The best solution for your bike is to eliminate the wear components from the cam compartment completely by changing to gear drive cams - no wear, no chains, no worries.

Story by Randy Twells Photos- RT(title shot) & Courtesy Tropicana Laughlin, Mother Road H-D, American Legion Post 87 website.

Founded by Dal-Con Promotions over 15 years ago and supported by the Tropicana Laughlin and Mother Road Harley-Davidson, the book-end locales for its Start and Finish/After-Party, the American Heroes Poker Run has continued to be a run also strongly supported by Laughlin River Run participants, without whom it would not happen.

So this year once again over 150 riders registered, donating $15 per rider/$10 perpassenger, enjoyed breakfast sandwiches provided by the Tropicana, and got ready to roll. This year’s ride was headed up as in the past several years by Antelope Valley H-D GM/Partner Scott Kellerman, and this yearalso by dealership Owner Ron Emard. Over the years the Run has provided funds for various Veterans assistance programs, and for the past several years donations go to the AmericanLegionPost87,inBullheadCity,AZfor the benefit of Vets in the area. Post Commander Richard Roel for several years along with Post members John Trujillo and John Reith, and the Post Women’s Auxiliary, has helped

at the Run start with Registration and greeting all participants and thanking them for their support. Of course the Tropicana Laughlin provides the setting to get the rubber on the road. It’s been one of Robin Rudkin’s key projects for the past 12 years; as the Tropicana’s Casino Marketing Manager, she works closely with Joe O’Day/Dal-Con and Mother RoadH-D for the best success possible on the Run. So this year with American Legion Riders members looking on, Commander Roel and his comrades along with Dal-Con Promotions’ River Run Co-Founder Joe O’Day presented a Plaque and Certificate of Appreciation to Tropicana Laughlin’s

Marketing Director Joe Hagan for the Tropicana Laughlin’s ongoing generous support of this Run.Scott and Ron as mentioned led the riders out of Laughlin, NV to Historic Route 66’s amazing scenic highway, with views of huge rock formations and long stretches of open road. There’s nothing quite like a remote 2-laner through the desert to get your mind cleared and back on track as to what’s important— and along with that, food and entertainment at the After Party at ride’s end, at Mother Road Harley-Davidson in Kingman,AZ!Prizesof courseweregivenout for the 3 best Poker hands, including a 2016 River Run room package and $250/100 H-Dmerchandise cer t i f icates. All of course, to benefit the Vets, and this

shows you can have a great experience while helping our service members who have given US so much of themselves. Mother Road H-D in fact welcomed Laughlin partygoers all weekend with 3 days of food & entertainment and with a dealership trailer also on site at the Tropicana Laughlin all weekend as well. The Run raised $3590 in all this year which is turned overtoPost87tosupporttheiroperationsandworkinthe community. The Post overlooks the Arizona Veterans Memorial Park. As their website states: The memorial contains a pyramid-shaped stone memorial honoring the U.S.S. Battleship Arizona, which was destroyed in the attack on Pearl Harbor …marking the US’ entry into WW2. The park is a beautiful Colorado River site in Bullhead City that is the setting for the Arizona Veterans Memorial, dedicated in the memory of the military men and women from the State of Arizona who were killed during wars and armed conflicts over the past 100 years. Post 87’s web page also has this message- “Since our Post 87 AZ waschartered in the American Legion we have been welcoming VETERANS from all branches of our Armed Forces. Today, we continue to welcome

all military personnel serving our country. Joining our Post enables you to continue serving your God, Country and Community.” Then follows, their goals and mission statement on how veterans can do that through the Post. I recommend you check it out at: http://americanlegionpost87.org/ Meantime, I asked Commander Roel, what are some of the things they do? He said, “For example, for military funerals, our Volunteers provide a Color Guard/21gunsalute,playTapsanddoaflagpresentationtotheVeteran’swidow. We also do Flag Day flag presentations & flag education at schools and seniors’ retirement homes. These are just a few of the ways we serve our community and our Veterans.” Commander Roel was in the USMC as a Corporal, served 3 years during

the Korean War era stationed inSan Diego, at the 32nd St. Naval Base. After the service, he worked as an optician for 38 years, thenretired about 15 years ago and “took off to see the world”. He meant to go to San Francisco, but took the proverbial and well-known, “wrong turn”, and ended up in Bullhead City, Arizona. He found that he liked it so much, he stayed. Sometimes those wrong

turns, work out. This is his fourth year as Post Commander, and he says that next year he may turn over the gavel to a new Commander. But either way, I’m sure we will see him out there supporting our American Heroes. So my friends your participation truly matters. And we hope to see you out there next year riding the highway again, on the American Heroes Poker Run. --And you can see more photos from this story at www.quickthrottle.com in the Gallery!

the 4th annual breast cancer Fundraiser at the starting gate

Danny Pulido, co-owner of Starting Gate and girlfriend, now Fiancée, Betty Delatorre continue their fight against Breast cancer. “It was four years ago that Betty was diagnosed with breast cancer and this became personal,” said Danny. “She has been in remission for 3 years now and we will always support this important cause.” Once again, the Starting gate fundraiser was organized by Lynn Nicholson of Top Rock Entertainment and was another huge success. The proceeds generated will benefit Breast Cancer Solutions and will assist women fighting breast cancer. The motto of “Fight Like A Girl” was not only meant to inspire, honor and remember women fighting this awful disease but to bring awareness, raise money and have a fun day.

The Sam Morrison Band rocked the Gate with their southern style rock and filled the dance floor throughout

the day. Vendors were inside and outside selling their wares and making donations to the charity from their sales as well. With over 75 gifts to give away raffles and prizes were plenty. It was a packed house all day from the time the Starting Gate opened with their Big Breakfast and all the way to the end with everyone enjoying the food and drink specials. The Starting Gate in Los Alamitos has the longest running bike night in Southern California. Every Wednesday, 12 months a year rain or shine. With a Comedy night, Salsa night,KaraokenightCountrynightand live music every weekend there is always a reason to go to the Gate. http://www.startinggateoc.com/

Thanks to The Starting Gate and sponsors Lifestyle Cycles, Law Tigers, HB Harley Davidson, The Cigar peddler. Everyone had a great day for a great cause. Don’t miss next year’s 5th Annual Breast Cancer Fundraiser.

24 JULY 2015 JULY 2015 25

Waco, an american Tragedy.

It is easy to dismiss these violations against a segment of society (Bikers) held in disdain by most

but it is very telling. -

Waco Police Chief Brent Stroman said Friday, June 12th that 3-Waco police officers fired a total of 12 shots during the May 17th Twin Peaks shootoutthatkilled9people,injured18andsent177 suspects to jail with a 1 million dollar bond each. Traci and I had to go to Waco to see for ourselves what happened. There were so many stories/rumors flying around and we didn’tknow what to think.. We spent 4 days in Texas really digging into this story by interviewing several Waco Police Officers, numerous biker club members, at the Republic of Texas Biker Rally in Austin, restaurant employees from Don Carlos, the restaurant next door to Twin Peaks, Baylor University Students, and people that were at the scene. I really feel that now that we have a good Idea of what went down those horrible few minutes May 17th at the Twin Peaks restaurant.

We started our journey at my brother’s home in Dallas, talking with him, his wife, and a half dozen or so folks from the surrounding area. We found that nobody really knows what happened in Waco. Several shop people we talked to referred to Waco as “Wacko,” referring to what just happened at the Twin Peaks, as well as the Waco Branch Davidian Siege which lasted from feb28th-April 19th ending in a Church fire that

killed men, women and children> Several ATF agents also lost their lives in a shootout during the 2-month standoff leading up to the fire. We decided to travel to Waco to take some photos at the scene (Twin Peaks) and talk to some people around that area then proceed to Austin to the Republic of Texas Biker Rally (ROT Rally) and maybe talk to some club members that were part of the Coalition of Clubs who were meeting at the Twin Peaks Restaurant May 17th. Of course we’d check out the Rally, the vendors, the bands and women...did I say women?…yes I did... It’s all coming back to me now... women driving all over the rally in golf carts, and on foot, wearing nothing but paint…ok… back on track…where was I?…Oh ya... trying to inject humor in this article is very difficult to say the least; Traci and I both went through an emotional rollercoaster putting together this article, as I sit in my office and put our report on paper, the toughest part for me is to relay our outrage without showing anger… Thinking of the families of the fallen as well as the shooters and their families and placing blame in the time of grief is beyond difficult. we really want people to know that Traci and I care, we really care…we are bikers…and we are reporters who love to ride motorcycles and report the truth, as we see it.

It was a really sad scene at the Twin Peaks, or what used to be the Twin Peaks restaurant.

We were stopped by security guards that were watching the place…we could see, and were told, that the flatscreen TV inside the restaurant, hanging from the ceiling, was shot out by the police. We were also told by the guards that a chip in the curb was a shot that the bikers did while shooting at the police. To me it looked like a chip made by a car bottoming out…one of the Waco police officers must have seen the bullet hit the curb. This just goes hand in hand with what the D.A., the Waco Mayer and Police Chief Stroman were saying about the shootout; that the Police showed restraint and only fired because they were fired at, that they saved all these lives, they

confiscated 1,000 weapons, and how one club wasn’t welcome and were hell bent on a gunfight at the Twin Peaks restaurant.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Sergeant Patrick Swanton, in his moment on the big stage, was, for lack of a better term, “full of himself ” or say “self absorbed”. Each time he came out to his little stage (press conference) he had on more makeup and more swagger. His press conferences, days after the shooting, were like something straight out of a Boss Hog script from the Dukes of Hazard. It was really hard to watch. Swanton was repeatedly shouting out “next question!” When asked how many bullets his officers fired and if they shot anybody he replied “stop beating a dead horse,” adding, “no more questions about what the twin peaks franchise owner’s said happened”. lol...and then saying, the day after the shooting; “The ownership of Twin Peaks Restaurant praised us for our great job of keeping the public safe”. I’m not sure the ownership of the Twin Peaks chain reviewed the videos, that still have not been released. In Chief Stroman own words: at least 3 Waco police officers fired 12- .223 caliber assault rifle bullets (bullets that travel over a mile) in the direction of their crowded club. The Waco PD was firing at motorcycle club members as well as patrons and their employees. Using their restaurant patrons, employees, and club members eating their burgers as a backdrop,

from 50-75 feet away. I was in the United States Army - the .223 shell is very similar to the M-16 shells we used in training in the military. I have seen what these bullets do. During training at the ranges we filled an ammo cans with water and shot them with a M-16 rifle, the rounds never go straight through. The shells come out the side or the top of the ammo can and they leave a bigger hole coming out than going in… The bullet actually tumbles intern causing the most lethal round in killing humans. Most victims at the scene were shot in the head.

We were hard pressed to find ANY signs that any shots were fired by the bikers, in the direction of police. We couldn’t find any holes, marks in any police cars, or marks that surely would have been in the Don Carlos restaurant wall, the backdrop from where the police were shooting from. Just a nick in the concrete curb. Evidently the bikers that were “executing each other” , a quote from the Waco DA several days ago during a bond reduction hearing, had the presence of mind to point their guns (none of which have been shown to the public in this “transparent” investigation by the Waco PD) at the Waco PD, fire a shot into the curb in the direction of the Waco PD...prompting theWacoPDtoshoot,whatreallylookslike,7-8bikers in the head. The way Swanton explained why his officers, that did the shooting, were still on scene days

after they had shot people was: “they are the best officers we got”. This was surreal to me, police that had just shot bikers standing around on scene. Swanson explained to the press that bikers from all over the country were arming themselves to all come down and attack Waco and that there was this “green light hit” on all police. Swanson stated to the biker clubs of the world to “stand down”. Wasn’t this in the movie Ramboorwas itTheAttackof theKillerBikerZombies? Can this really be happening in theUnited States of America? Are Americans buying into this? The only persons I see attacking Waco are biker lawyers. To say Waco politics took over this investigation is an understatement. It took the Waco PD four and a half weeks to count how many .223 caliber assault rifle shells were fired by their officers. A total of 177 people were arrested May 17th-18th and at that time the Chief

of Waco police said he wanted to send a message to motorcycle “gangs” and put a million dollar bond on everyone arrested. Lets get some facts down in print; First off this was a Coalition of clubs meeting; Large bike clubs, religious clubs, veteran clubs, sober clubs, and family members. Second: this was the first ever coalition club meeting where the police were present. One club member was quoted saying a police officer called him to ask if he could attend this meeting, adding that when he got there he felt it was a trap. I could write 2 pages on civil rights violations by the City of Waco since the shootings. Nobody has been formally charged yet; over 100 are still in jail. In Austin, at the ROT Biker Rally, attendance was way down due directly or indirectly to the Waco shooting…we saw a lot of folks having fun, and we talked to a few club members that were still in a kind of shock and obvious anger over the actions of the police. Why were these clubs not angry with the other clubs that they were supposedly at war with on May 17th ? After talking to the head of the Texas Coalition of Clubs, who had a couple booths at the rally, we found the thing that irritated the clubs the most was being robbed by the Chief of Police, the DA, and the Mayor of Waco of their Civil rights. A lot of these guys are x-military, most have seen death before, but none had been treated this badly by a country they love and proudly wear the flag of... Traci and I cover the biggest law enforcement charity in the state of Arizona at The Special Olympics Torch Run Breakfast of Champions. We do not hate police. After talking to a Waco police officer that was at the scene May 17th, I felt his remorse (without his admitting guilt), “It all happened so fast,” as he looked down toward the ground… “most of these guys are just in a club to be with other guys that like to ride… someone to ride with”, he paused rubbed his chin. “Normally we do on site or in jail interviews and cut witnesses loose. Here they kept everybody on a 1million dollar bond...” Back home, I was thinking I am glad we went. This is by far the most emotional story I have ever written. Traci and I just watched a documentary; “The 70’s” on CNN (one of the big networks that stopped covering the Waco Shootings) it was about Nixon, and the 2 guys from the Washington post that kept the “Watergate” story alive. The story was being pushed under the rug by all of the big networks, but Woodward and Bernstein kept at it until everyone knew the truth. Traci and I are in no way on this kind of scale but we have a similarity. We want to keep the tragedy at Twin Peaks Waco alive and raise awareness that this was a terrible tragedy as well as a major civil rights violation that is continuing right now, by keeping these US citizens in jail and most recently filing with the court for the forfeiture of their bikes to be sold for profit to the Waco PD....This could happen to any biker. The ATF and the FBI are doing ballistics and reports on this shooting. Lets hope we get some answers. Traci and I will continue to pray for the families of the victims, and the shooters, and their families.

28 JULY 2015 JULY 2015 29

By Leroy B. Vaughn

I was doing a little research a few days

ago and I came across a copy of a Popular

Mechanics magazine cover from June

1935.

The price of the magazine was 25 cents

and the cover had an illustration of a racer

riding a big motorcycle with the words

300 miles per hour on the exhaust pipe.

The motorcycle depicted on the cover

was a modified Henderson X model that

had been lengthened and strengthened

to accommodate a 1934 Plymouth PF

in line flat head six cylinder engine and

transmission.

The engine was modified and produced

125 horsepower at 4,500 RPM after it

came back from a speed shop.

The bike was 11 feet long and weighed

1,500 lbs. The steering was mounted

behind the center point of the engine and

the rider was able to keep the machine on

its wheels with skid plates mounted on

both sides that also acted as brakes to slow

the machine down.

Fred Luther was a motorcycle racer

from California. As an employee of the

Chrysler Corporation, he was able to talk

Chrysler executives into providing the

engine and transmission for his racer.

Seven years after the first Plymouth car

came off the assembly line, the Plymouth

powered motorcycle was on the salt flats

at Bonneville.

Fred Luther had taken the bike to

Bonneville in an attempt to set a world

speed record and collect a cash prize of

$10,000.

He was hoping to take the machine to 300

miles per hour. He hit 140 mph in the first

leg and on the return leg a connecting rod

brokeat180mph.Hewasinsecondgear

at that time.

He called it quits after coasting the bike back to the

pits. Luther always believed that the bike could do

300 mph, but he was not going to try again.

The cash prize of $10,000 turned out to be a hoax,

and he never found another rider willing to take the

big bike up to 300 miles per hour.

At the time of Fred Luther’s run in 1935, no

automobile had been able to reach 300 miles per

hour.

In 2003, sixty eight years after the motorcycle with

the Plymouth engine ran at Bonneville, Chrysler

engineers designed a concept motorcycle called the

Tomahawk.

The Tomahawk weighed about the same as Fred

Luther’s Plymouth powered machine but had a lot

more horsepower.

Chrysler mounted a 500 horsepower Dodge Viper

V-10 engine onto a frame supported by four twenty

inch wheels.

Chrysler says the Tomahawk can reach 60 mph in

2.5 seconds and has a theoretical speed of about

400 miles per hour. The Tomahawk has never been

driven at over 100 miles per hour.

Thefourwheelsarenecessarytokeepthe8½foot

long machine upright.

The Tomahawk is classified as a car by the National

Highway Traffic Administration. A motorcycle can

have no more than 3 wheels on the ground during

normal operation.

Chrysler sold nine replicas of the Tomahawk for a

reported price of $555,000 each as collector’s item.

I thought I was finished with this article until I

sat back and started remembering another crazy

machine that I had seen pictures of and read a

motorcycle magazine story about in the 1970’s.

I was originally going to call this article

“Motorcycles and Mopar engines” and then I

decided to add this machine to the story.

I had a hobby garage in back of the house I was

renting and I had two projects that I was working

on, or planned to work on.

Someone had given me a Harley-Davidson Moto

Morini that needed work and I had a chopped

Triumph frame sitting against a wall that I really

wanted to build, when I wasn’t out riding my

Norton Commando.

Above the Triumph frame was a big poster of a

machine called the ROADDOG. I could no longer

use the Mopar title for my article because the

ROADDOG had a Chevrolet engine.

The ROADDOG was built by an electronic

engineer named William Gelbke. Mr. Gelbke was

called “Wild Bill” by his road buddies.

He claimed to have ridden his machine 20,000

miles in the first year after he built it.

20,000 miles might not seem to be a lot of miles on

today’s cruisers, but the ROADDOG was nothing

like any other motorcycle on the road, possibly

ever.

The ROADDOG was powered by a four cylinder,

152 cubic inch Chevy 11 “Iron Duke” engine with

a Powerglide transmission. The machine was shaft

driven and was stopped with disc brakes.

The ROADDOG was too big for a side or

kickstand. Four hydraulic rams were used to hold

the machine upright when parked. Each ram was

deployed individually.

Themachinewas17feetlongandweighed3,280

lbs.

Wild Bill was seen cruising the highways at 90 plus

miles per hour, and his friends have told people

that they went with Wild Bill and the ROADDOG

on trips from his home in Wisconsin to Texas and

Oklahoma, for a beer or steak dinner.

In 1979, Wild

Bill was killed in a

domestic dispute

and the ROADDOG

disappeared for fifteen

years.

A motorcycle collector

searched for the

ROADDOG for about

six years and located it

after writing an article

in his magazine.

I have been fascinated

with odd motor vehicles since my teenage years in

southern California in the early 1960’s. This was

the era of Von Dutch, George Barris and Ed “Big

Daddy” Roth.

Among the many model cars I built before owning

my own cars, hot rods and motorcycles was a

model of Mickey Thompsons Challenger speedster

with its four Pontiac engines.

And now, as I head for the refrigerator for a cold

beer, I can’t get that song “Hot Rod Lincoln” out

of my head. The end

30 JULY 2015 JULY 2015 31

Story & Photos by Kevin LeVezu*

Meteorologists predicted thunder… Thunder happened - but not just from above. Street Vibrations Spring Rally got rolling under cloudy looming skies with some riders even encountering hail on the road to get here. But, everyone who I talked with was thankful that they came! The weekend was filled with cool temps and beautiful riding. It was a great prelude to September 23rd... the start of the Fall Rally.

Thunder from the engines of thousands of bikes arriving for the Spring Rally could be heard from Lake Tahoe through downtown Reno and all the way to Virginia City.

Friday, I started in downtown Reno where Randy Burke and his crew of professionals from Roadshows productions were working with over 50 vendors and 24 bands to put on a show that few in the west can rival. There were some awesome custom creations by Simms Custom Cycles as well as a display of the new Indian models.

Bands like Blues Monsters, Rippin and Audioboxx rocked the stage to create their own thunder. The music along with the smell of slow cooked beef brisket made me hungry, happy and feeling at home. Then, in the afternoon, the Spanish Springs High School ROTC

marched in, dressed in authentic WWII military uniforms, for a presentation of the American Flag. That was complemented by Darcy Gibson who sang our National Anthem. It was the only time when the thunder stopped as so many of the bikers present are Veterans or Active Military and we all paused as our flag was raised. I was honored to stand next to many of these patriots during the ceremony.

After the flag ceremony was over, it was time for the Slow Bike races. Slow racing may sound easy but it’s definitely not! Try going slower than the other rider, maintaining balance, and staying within a corridor seemingly the width of a popsicle stick without putting a foot down. So I wandered over to the bike race area and instead of starting the slow races… Roadshows’ Mike “Coach” McNulty started to dance! What? Well it turned into a flash mob and soon the whole street was dancing. I have never been in the middle of a flash mob but I must admit that it was fun. Then beautiful showgirls did a great job as

starters for each race. Reno’s finest participated too-- however congrats go to Don Clot of Portland who won 1st Place!

The rest of the evening was a blur. There were VIP parties in the Eldorado to attend, bands like Foreigner Unauthorized and Lucky Tongue on five stages to dance to, show girls, local casinos, great food…. You get the idea… fun!

Saturday morning there were blue skies and open roads! My wife and I headed east over winding roads and Geiger grade, stopping at viewpoints along the way to look at the spectacular views of the valley we just came from. Finally this historic road brought us to Virginal City. An old mining town with lots of character and lots of motorcycles! Walking the old wooden planks in front of the stores, we looked in the shops, soaked up the atmosphere of a century ago, sampled the food and tested our luck in places like the Bucket of Blood Saloon and the Delta Saloon with the famous “Suicide Table”. We even stepped inside the Old Washoe Club (rumored to be one of the most haunted places in America).

In the middle of the day, it was time to head back to Reno and to hang out at Chester’s Harley Davidson. Listening to the band Alias Smith, having a cold Coors Light and hanging out with

friends made for a perfect afternoon. From the Street 500 city cruiser to full-on top of the line touring baggers beckoning you to take ‘em out on the road, there are some sweet bikes in that shop. It was a lot of fun and even though it was crowded, there was always someone from Chester’s there to offer advice or give me details on some aspect of a bike that I did not know. The Street Vibrations Poker Run stopped at Chester’s for lunch too, and then they headed on to Virginia City, with an award party at Baldini’s in Reno afterward. 3 guys all from California won the top 3 prizes with a Straight, 2 Pair and a Pair of Aces. Good times!

Saturday afternoon I found myself on the road once again, this time to Lake Tahoe. In my opinion it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. The views of Tahoe were amazing. The trip around the lake was about a 100 mile ride from Reno and

back but, wow, it is worth it. Once back in Reno, more great bands played including The Fryed Brothers Band, there was another VIP Party at Baldini’s, and crowds cheered on more Slow Races.

Sunday there were event organized church services on the Silver Legacy Stage, great “last minute” deals from the vendors, more Slow Races and finally for us, a slow ride home after a very relaxing and fun filled trip to the Biggest Little City in the World.

While the sound of thunder is fading for now, I’m definitely looking forward to

hearing the rumbling start again as the country band Rascal Flatts will entertain us on September 24 during Street Vibrations Fall Rally in Reno and Virginia City. See ya there!

32 JULY 2015 JULY 2015 33

20th Anniversary Run & CampoutMay 29th thru 31st 2015By GARy A There is more to motorcycle clubs than what your read in the paper and this MC family campout was a prime example of what most of us do in our secular world. I have attended this 3 day event more than once and I have to say this was the best ever. The Messengers of Recovery MC was started

in 1995 by ‘Papa’ John Railton with a vision in mind. This vision was really a ‘mission’ to give back what was so freely given to him. A brotherhood of bikers who live a clean and sober life that can give back to the community. A place for misfits to find a home and call each other brother. A place to leave all your troubled past behind and start anew. To get on your Harley and truly ride free. The Messengers are a 12 Step based MC and are members of the So Cal Confederation of Clubs. The Mother Chapter is located in the San Fernando Valley with other chapters in San Diego, Santa Maria, Orange, Riverside and Santa Clarita Valley. On this occasion of the 20th Anniversary, the campout was located at theKOACampground inActon. Itwas ahuge event with the attendance nearing 400 on Saturday. This group knows how to throw a party. There were vendors, music, bike games, kid’s games, horseshoe tournament, poker run, bike show, raffles, and food, food and more food. It started on Friday at noon and these guys didn’t stop until Sunday morning. The main thing about this run, no alcohol, no drugs, no hassles. It was awesome to see 15 different clubs represented along with bikers of all walks of life have a blast together. Did you read what I wrote? Together, getting along, having fun with their children, wives, girlfriends. That is what being part of this community is about. Too often we are portrayed as a dark and sinister picture of life. We need to let the population know, we are just as you are. We live next door, we work with you, shop at the same markets as you. Our children go to school together. You get the point. This ‘run’ is months in the making, with Club President ‘Froggy’ Mark, heading it up, with the Presidents of the other chapters involved, but it takes every Messenger, from the prospects to the officers to make this

a success. They put together a stage, with Hollywood lighting donated by Warner Bros. Studios, a movie set quiet generator donated by American Mobil Power Company. A full kitchen, with food going practically 24 hours a day. When the campground is ready it looks like a film shoot is about to happen. It pays to have connections. Friday starts off pretty mellow with bikers starting to arrive at noon. Packets are pre-made before the run which in the past has drawn approximately 200 people. ByFridayregistrationnumbersareinthe80’s,with most of them being Messengers family

and friends, leaving 120 packets for Saturday which usually draws the biggest crowd. Well, by Fridayevening,188of the200pre-madepacketswere already gone, which means ‘oh shit’ we are gonna run out of food, drinks, ice, ect….Off go the prospects for a Friday night shopping spree… There was Toms (VP SCV) chilly to keep everybody’s belly full, which is famous at Bartels chili cook off. The amazing warm cornbread was prepared and donated by Tom’s lady, Gina. It was so good it could have been a cake.Saturday starts off with the grill warming up for breakfast. Eggs, bacon, sausage ect. The aroma is the alarm to get up. Even if you brought your

own stuff, you couldn’t ignore the bacon. After breakfast San Diego Chapter President, Lee, heads up the kid games, which is a trip to watch. They have such a blast whacking that round ball full of candy. Sack races, balloon throws…all sorts for games.. Then for the adults (who really is?) there was the bike show, poker run and the biker games. As the sun was setting in the west the smoke was rising in the east with steak on the grills, along with potatoes, salad, bread, and a drink. It was a generous portion which comes with the registration. The night’s music was performed by ‘The Hollywood Hillbillies’ with ‘For Sanity’s Sake’ filling in the intermissions. Following that, the drawing for the main prize, a 55’ Visio HD

TV, with second prize being an IPad. There were many other prizes being raffled off with tickets being sold all day. The campground itself is very nice with swimming pool, clean bathrooms with showers, plenty of shade for tent camping and right down the road, full hookups for motorhomes. That was my choice by the way, ok not all my choice, Guen (my lady) and her two sons also had a say. I rode my bike by the way, Guen drove the camper, just in case you were wondering. The campground also supplied PG movies for the kids on an outside screen and have really cool portable propane fire pits which they donated to the run. Thank you KOA. The evening continued with awards for best bike, longest ride to get to the event, prospect awards, bike game awards and because it is a clean and sober event, a sunset AA/NA speaker meeting. The highlight of the evening for me, was listening to ‘Papa’ John speak about the club which is his ‘child’. To be able to witness, first hand, all the families, friends, supporters, being one big happy family, made him overwhelmed with emotion which we all shared. His is a humble man who doesn’t like the limelight but for just this one moment in time, as all the club P’s presented him with a portrait painting of himself on a bike, I think he enjoyed every moment. Twenty years keeping a club together, staying sober, being respectful, being an example for all of us, teaching us to be part of the community is not always easy, but John handles it with grace and dignity. I will leave you with this. I enjoyed every minute of this campout. We hardly saw Guen’s two kids, who had never been to a ‘biker’ event before, because they

were having so much fun. There was no hassles, everyone got along great and there was nothing but fun, laughter, brotherhood, sisterhood, meeting new friends and seeing old ones. Anniversary’s usually bring out the soft side of people and for us bikers, it was really special, because we are struggling in our world. With so much bad press, wrong press, made up press, bias press, it’s refreshing to be a biker and proud of what we represent. I know it’s hard sometimes for the general public to understand us, to comprehend the freedom we represent, but that’s OK. Invite them to the 21st Messengers of Recovery Campout. They will understand then.

34 JULY 2015 JULY 2015 35

By Gary Mraz

Generally awake for sixteen hours a day, we humans spend much of that time sitting. Crawling through traffic for hours to a nine-to-five leaves precious few for watching reruns of Seinfeld, all very comfortably seated …going nowhere. Good Lord, even our blood travels 8,000 miles in sixteen hours!

I intend on spending my days very comfortably seated, at 80 mph towards South Dakota.Factoring in a few pit stops, a good lunch, even an hour just sight-seeing, I map out what I surmise is a 16-hour Iron Butt approach to day one of riding. I scrutinize each and every town in my path. Salt Lake City, Provo, Soldier’s Summit, Helper, Price and Green River are all direct hits. Spending this kind of time in the saddle takes some serious preparation. Packing water, snacks, clothes and a rain-suit. The basics for any long ride. It’s November and Utah get weather. The Victory Cross Country has the largest cargo capacity in its class (40 Quarts) and I use every drop. Everything including street shoes, lap top, camera and even a tripod fits. Kickstandupat7amI’llowntheroad,cruisecontrol on, rockin’ the beats. There’s plenty of time to think about the new bike. In this author’s opinion, Victory makes one of America’s best touring motorcycles.Interstate 15 to Las Vegas allows one to contemplate the grand expanse before you. Traveling hundreds of miles through arid desert requires a modicum of creature comforts. Amenities like XM radio or an iPod, spacious floorboards, incredibly comfortable seating, ergonomically perfect riding position, the aptly-named Cross Country lives up to expectations. Leaving Las Vegas and short 23-mile ride through Arizona, I enter Utah and the town of St. George. 396 miles into the journey and

It’s time to take a serious break, eat lunch and ruminate. What better place than the Seven Wives Inn to consider exactly where I’ll sleep tonight. Soldiers Summit, Helper, Price or Green River hit the perimeter. Soldiers Summit reveals a ghost town, population zero, that’s out, neighboring Helper has One Motel! I immediately book a room. With cruise control at 95 and 50-mile visibility the Utah high desert is filled with mysterious Hoodoos and Buttes that loom like gothic spires harboring watchful gargoyles. Washington bureaucrats refused Utah’s admission into the union because bedding multiple wives was a federal offense. It wasn’t until 1897 thatAmerica’s 45th state finally renounced the practice and statehood was granted, 50 years after California! This terrain is down right spectacular, the sheer comfort and grace of the Cross Country seems to alter time and I make Helper sooner than expected. Under an eerie waning moon the Riverside Motel appears like an oasis for lost souls. 697 miles and fourteen hours in the saddle and destination is known… bed.Enjoying a day of recuperation I find Helper to be an amazing city. The most liberal, non-Mormon in Utah, it seems Helper has always been a wild place with most of its five Hotels operating as Brothels until 1974. On April 21, 1897, Butch Cassidy robbed the Pleasant Valley Coal Company in nearby Castle Gate and stayed in Helper the day before. Nowadays Helper

hosts a yearly arts festival, Butch Cassidy Outlaw car & motorcycle show and in the future, a film festival. The owner of The Utah Hotel and the Balance Rock Café suggested I stay in their rooms where they house visiting artists during the summer at the Helper Art Workshops. Recently renovated, the Utah Hotel is an historic building; in fact, the entire commercial district is on the National Historic Registry, even boasting a

geological feature, Balance Rock. Downtown literally hasn’t changed for 100 years. Currently though, Helper is experiencing a renaissance and the former Hotels of ill-repute are being renovated into art studios and living spaces. There are plans to renovate the historic Strand Theater to its original glory. The Rio Theatre, a fully equipped and professional stage currently hosts

performances. Home of the Western Mining & Railroad Museum Main Street Helper is right out of a movie set. The days of the Private Club are gone and new bars serve up shots and serious mixed drinks. Utah’s Wasatch Brewery makes adarkbeercalledDevastator that’s8%alcoholand their Polygamy Porter (Why Have Just One) motto proves this ain’t your daddy’s Utah. Helper is a rider’s paradise centrally located for day trips. I decide to spend a few days here. A nearby geological site takes me to the sleepy town of Midway and one of the planet’s most unusual swimming holes, the Homestead Crater. Spectacular vistas of the snow covered Wasatch Mountains cradle U.S 6 north. A 55-foot-high “calcite” dome houses an ancient, mineral rich hot spring. The geo-thermal crater rises on the grounds of the Homestead Resort near Wasatch Mountain State Park. Over 10,000 years old, the native Anasazi Indians were lowered by rope from a hole at the dome’s top into the healing 96-degree water. Today, visitors enter through a 110-foot tunnel bored into the dome’s porous rock wall above the water line. Take a dip in this geo-thermally heated crystal-clear crater and gaze down 65 feet at mineral deposits that

grace the chamber’s sides. Hot steam rising in the chilly air and eerie illumination depict a strange portal to a stygian abyss. The Sidetrack Café in adjacent Heber City is a must stop for lunch. The food is fantastic, coffee excellent and baked goods to die for, try the Dream Bar.The magnificent diversity of Utah’s landscape is constantly changing costume like a Harlot seducing a suitor. A shifting spectrum of light turn’s the apricot colored hoodoos of Goblin Valley to rose, then magenta. An ever changing molten palette of hues evolves before your eyes.

“Hoodoo” a. One that brings bad luck. b. Geology, A column of eccentrically shaped rock, produced by differential weathering. Utah is laden with Buttes and Hoodoos and one can’t escape the gaze of these mammoth sentinels guarding their sacred terrain. Scenic Byway 12 south is considered one of Americas most scenic roads. In a state known for its scenic drives this 62-mile stretch may arguably be the most attractive drive in the nation. The list of amazing destinations in Utah is overwhelming. Dinosaur Diamond, Bryce and Zion NationalPark, The Arches National Park, Balanced Rock, The Wave, Waterpocket Fold to name only a few. Over 70 percent of the land is either Bureau of Land Management (BLM), national or state parks, and motorcycles gain access at half the price of cagers. Bewitching, surreal, exalting - how many superlatives can one declare of this wondrous place and how did I miss this before now? The Victory Cross Country embraces the thrill of curves and thrust of acceleration yet disappears beneath you, allowing the rider to coalesce with the passing panorama.

Alas, South Dakota is my destination.

36 JULY 2015 JULY 2015 37

California AB 334, introduced by Assembly member Cooley (Coauthors: Assembly Members Achadjian, Chávez, Gallagher, Gray, Olsen, Perea, and Wagner) addresses the pervasive issue of motorcycle profiling. This bill would require the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training to ensure that the profiling of motorcycle riders is addressed in the course of basic law enforcement training and offered to law enforcement officers in conjunction with existing training regarding profiling. The bill would require all local law enforcement agencies to adopt a written policy designed to condemn and prevent the profiling of motorcycle riders and to review and audit any existing policies to ensure that those policies do not enable or foster the practice of profiling motorcycle riders.

Legislatures from California to Maryland, coast-to-coast, are discussing and addressing motorcycle profiling laws. Adopting a written policy and integration of training into current policies on profiling has empirically reduced motorcycle profiling with zero budgetary impact in Washington State’s model, passed unanimously in 2011. Profiling stops have dramatically reduced with no fiscal impact and without interfering with constitutional law enforcement tactics and investigatory methods. Legislatures in Maryland, Minnesota, Oklahoma, New York, Missouri, and Arkansas also recognize the importance of the Washington law. These states are all considering laws to address motorcycle profiling this session in hopes of repairing the divide between law enforcement and the motorcycling community.

AB 334 provides an opportunity for California to help repair this relationship by substantially reducing incidents of profiling and ending a model of law enforcement discrimination in the largest motorcycling state in America. AB 334 is still on its journey. It was referred to the standing committee on public safety. Next it moved to the standing committee on appropriations. The Appropriations Committee Analysis relating to AB 334 is inaccurate. The assertion that a simple integration of a policy statement and training into CURRENT policies on profiling would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars is absurd. First, the Fiscal Effect conclusions are empirically disproven. Legislatures in Washington State, Maryland, and Minnesota unanimously prove that the costs identified by the Assembly Committee on Appropriations are massively overstated. These conclusions also ignore that AB 334 integrates policy requirements and training into current policies and training on profiling already budgeted and in existence. Second, the Argument Offered in Opposition is based on a misinterpretation of statute and is also empirically disproven. A bill to address motorcycle profiling would in no way interfere with law enforcement efforts in California. AB 334 merely reinforces the idea that all classes of people should be treated equally under the law regardless of characteristics such as expression and organizational affiliations, consistent with both the California and US Constitutions.

The motorcycle clubs and organizations

that law enforcement are labeling gangs, for the purpose of opposing a profiling law, are protected by the 1st Amendment rights of expression and assembly. This expression defines the entire class of motorcyclists that proudly display their associations on vests, jackets, and other paraphernalia. There are literally millions of members and associates of motorcycle clubs in America. It would be absurd to deny the protections of the masses because of the actions of the few. Despite often being labeled gangs or OMG’s by law enforcement and the media most motorcycle club members in California have not been found guilty of an offense under California’s Anti-Gang statute. Allowing law enforcement gang labeling to be a factor in warrant-less traffic seizures, before a court has made a determination that there is probable cause for a warranted seizure, is a deprivation of the individuals constitutionally protected expression without Due Process of law. The right for motorcycle clubs to exist is obvious and well established and related expression is protected by the 1st Amendment. Legislation addressing motorcycle profiling has no budgetary impact and would not compromise any legitimate or legal law enforcement tactic or investigation method. There are current mechanisms to legally investigate, prosecute and convict criminals and criminal activity. Certainly it is not necessary to commit constitutional violations to insure officer safety or combat crime. Let’s hope AB 334 get through the system with efficient language and serves the Biker population as all the supporters originally intended.

Relating to the Profiling of Motorcycle Riders

AB 334Most of us can relate to that terrible moment when we look up into our mirror only to see the flashing lights of law enforcement behind us and we wonder what we did to deserve the ensuing stop. Maybe we returned to our motorcycles at a bike night, or event, to find our license plates being recorded or just stopped and questioned about details of our motorcycle friends or motorcycle clubs without getting a ticket. Profiling motorcyclists and motorcycle clubs is an unconstitutional infringement of the 1st, 4th, and 14th amendments to the US Constitution Motorcycle profiling is occurring in most regions of California. The entire California motorcycle club and MRO community would contend that law enforcement has been using the gang stereotype to justify selective and discriminatory profiling stops on motorcyclists for far too long. In fact, the opposition based on the gang stereotype

only proves the mindset and paradigm of law enforcement towards motorcycle clubs generally. Motorcyclists and club members are comprised of individuals from a multi-cultural and demographic cross-section of America. Discrimination against motorcyclists as a class is simply unacceptable. The motorcycling community has collected a mass of Victim Statements providing irrefutable proof that profiling is occurring. The State legislature has a duty and responsibility to ensure a positive relationship between law enforcement and the public by regulating and controlling abuse. Importantly, this legislature recently took a stand against discrimination by passing a prohibition on motorcycle-only checkpoints. Passing a prohibition against profiling would be consistent and reinforce the principles already embraced by this legislature.

40 JULY 2015 JULY 2015 41

It was a beautiful morning as we rolled out from Oceanside to head for San Diego Harley Davidson for the annual Mt. Soledad Bike Blessing and Blood Drive. A pack of motorcycles and our black “Urban Assault Vehicle” – the BFC van (commandeered by BFC sister -Shylo) rolled the 40 miles south down the 5 Fwy to San Diego. We arrived early and there were already over 100 bikes in the parking lot… and excitement was in the air… as the dozens of motorcycles of all brands continued to roll in.

We had a crew setting up the PA system, and band equipment (my bass amp & Phil’s guitar rig) for the “Full Throttle Band”. SD BFC “Diesel” and his team did a great job. The other members of the band started rolling in and setting up their gear as well. We were blessed to have our original drummer: Danny Wasson with us. Danny is an incredible Rock N’ Roll drummer who actually plays in multiple bands – he’s a busy boy. So we actually have a few different drummers now that work with the band.

I got to meet Eric Turner – (one of the original guitarists for the super group “Warrant”), his son,Noah, andEric’swifeKristina. It was alot of fun for me to introduce “Eric Turner – to - EricTurner” (our guitarist/singer in theFullThrottle Band)… It was an absolute riot… So we called them: Eric A., and Eric B. Turner (for their middle names).

As the pastor for the event, they wanted my

bike in line up toward the front, as we got ready to head up to Mt. Soledad with the hundreds of motorcycles. We’d like to thank New York Myke and his beautiful wife Petrina, “Wayne-O” President of the Messengers M/C, and “Hollywood George” also of theMessengersM/C (as ourGrandMarshalls forthe ride). We’d also like to thank everyone at San Diego Harley Davidson who sponsor this rally each year, and the Messengers M/C fortraffic-blocking, and leading the way up to Mt. Soledad. You guys rock !

It was a beautiful ride up the mountain… and crystal clear in the visibility department. Those that had never been on the top of Mt. Soledad were totally blown away by the 360 degree view of the La Jolla coastline, the Pacific Ocean, and San Diego. It is truly breath-taking. It is one of the prettiest attractions in San Diego county, and it is also a Veterans Memorial – with plaques, pictures and names of many who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. It is truly “Hallowed and Sanctified” ground.

I opened the event with prayer, followed by: A 14 yr. old named Noah Turner with an incredible voice who sang the “Star Spangled Banner”, as his proud parents Eric B. Turner from “Warrant” andhisbeautifulwife:Kristinalookedon.Hisrendition touched the hearts of the bikers and vets who gathered for the Bike Blessing. Noah will probably be heading for “American Idol”, or other competitions - as he is an amazing talent.

We had some amazing speakers: Larry Wilske, a retired Navy SEAL who is now executive director of the Mt Soledad Association., and he talked about the fact that the Association is actually buying the property, which should guarantee that the Memorial with it’s 60 foot white Latin Cross will stay on that mountain indefinitely.

Next up was BFC’s own: “Gunny” James Lee who spoke about all the he experienced: He joined the Marine Corps… wanting to serve his country and give back to preserve our freedoms, and doing multiple tours to the Middle East to do so, serving over 20 years. He experienced PTSD and other things that troubled his mind and heart. When he asked God to help him, he prayed and asked the Lord Jesus Christ to touch him and heal his mind and heart and through God’s healing touch - things got much better for Gunny.

New York Myke (a Vietnam Vet) got the crowd all fired up, as he shared passionately about his love for our country, and the need for Americans to wake up, band together, and be willing to stand up and fight for our freedoms – lest we lose them all.

After the short speeches, I shared a prayer for the bikers and their machines. Then we all headed down the mountain and we went back to the Harley shop for the “After Party”. So the “Thunder Came Down the Mountain” back to

the shop where there was a party going on.The San Diego Blood Bank mobile was on hand for: Bandit’s Blood Drive (in memory of Bandit the Biker Dog – who passed away). Mark who owned Bandit now owns “Chopper” the Biker Dog who has his own website (www.c h o p p e r t h e b i k e r d o g . c o m ) . Chopper was on hand to give comfort to all who were donating blood that day, and he got a real work out.

The Blood Drive Benefit was for one of SDHD’s own, a beautiful young lady who works in the Motor Clothes department named Aimee. Here’s some history on Aimee and her condition. Aimee Holmes has Aplastic Anemia. It’s a very rare auto immune disorder that is idiopathic which means the original has unknown pathogens. Basically, her bone marrow and the blood stem cells that reside there are damaged. This causes a deficiency of all three blood cell types Red, white and platelets. This condition, if left untreated can be fatal but Aimee caught it just in time.

She has needed and will continue to need blood transfusions. NY Myke shared with us that when Aimee goes in for her treatments, she comes back to work with a very loving and cheerful attitude. That is one reason that everyone at the shop, and so many others wanted to help Aimee in the situation. She is a truly amazing young lady.

So the 120 pints of blood collected at the rally will really help restock the supply for her and those who need blood. The event was a huge success as the bikers and others showed their love for Aimee. It was also a witness of the power and energy in the incredible ways that Biker events help charities and their communities. Everyone ate some wonderful food provided by the ministry “Five Loaves and Two Fish”. The Full Throttle Band rocked the parking lot. And there were many community organizations that all worked together to make it a great event. All in all, it was a really beautiful event.
