Configuring a Serial Connection in Operations Console
1. To set up the “virtual” modem for the com port, go to START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL. Select the ICON below.
2. Select the Modem tab and select Add

3. Check the “Don’t detect my modem…” box and select Next.

4. Select Have Disk
5. Select Browse

6. Point to the location of the modem file (below is the default location)

8. Select the associated port and select Next.
9. If you get a message about the driver not being digitally signed, select continue anyway.

10. Select Finish.
11. Open the iSeries Operations Console

12. Select Connection/New

13. Check the Local console directly attached to the server option. Select Next.

14. Enter the Connection Name desired – USE ONLY ALPHA AND NUMERIC CHARACTERS

15. Uncheck the “Detect console communication port”. Select Next.

16. Select associated PC communication port - must match the communication port used in the
previous modem configuration. Select Next.

17. Select Finish.

18. To activate the console, right click on the console name and select connect.

Configuring the iSeries for a Serial Console
1. Start SST on the iSeries.

2. Log on to SST using a Service Tools user ID such as QSECOFR – the iSeries default
password is QSECOFR (uppercase).

4. Select option 3. Select console

5. Change the console type to 2 and press enter to continue.

6. Press enter to continue and then F3 twice to exit and Enter to continue ending SST.

7. Power down the system completely and then restart from the iSeries panel.

8. iSeries will IPL and you will see the iSeries Operations Console status change to connected and get a notification in the bottom right task bar that your console has connected.

9. Shortly after connection, the console will open to a signon screen.

NOTE: If write protection is enabled, changes made must be committed or will be lost. Double click on the Flash Disk Write Protection ICON on the desktop and select Commit Changes.
