DOC02 - CDC MC AES3 - FPGA PIC Programming - Issue A - May 2017
Introduction
This document is a guide to programming the PIC found on the main board within the CDC MC AES3.
The PIC contains firmware that may need to be upgraded on occasion. In order for the PIC to be
updated via the Ethernet port on the front of the unit a Bootloader will need to be installed on to the
PIC first. This is process is covered below.
This document also contains the instructions on how, when required, to upgrade the FPGA on the
CDC MC AES3.
This process must be carried out by qualified Cadac representatives.
Download the PIC Bootloader File
To install the PIC Bootloader you will need to download the following programme file -
MComms_Router_Pic_Update - from the Cadac FTP site:
http://www.cadac-sound.com/customer/peripherals/MC%20ROUTER/MComms_Router_PIC_Update.exe
Download the Hex Files
To update the PIC you will need to download two hex files (these have been zipped up and will
require unzipping) from the Cadac FTP site:
Click on the following links or paste them in your browser:

Download the FPGA Files
To update the FPGA you will need to download the latest bin files from the Cadac FTP site:
Click on the following links or paste them in your browser:

Tools Required
This document has been written showing the PICKit3 as the programming tool for the PICS.
A separate document contains detailed information regarding the PICKit3, the Microchip Integrated
Programming Environment software and the adaptor kits required to undertake the firmware upgrades
on the PICS found in the CDC MC AES3.
Document reference: Recommended tool for PIC programming
PICKit3
A T-10 Torx driver will be needed to the top panel screws
A laptop installed with MPLAB IPE
USB cable

CDC MC AES3 PIC J7 Programming Port: Bootloader Hex
This procedure needs to be carried out if the Bootloader software has not been installed on to the
PICJ7.
To access the PIC on the CDC MC AES3 it will require the unscrewing of all the retaining screws
(T-10 Torx) on the top cover and removing the panel.
The position of the PIC programming port J7 on the Main PCB is shown below:
J7

Process for Reprogramming:
• Connect the PICKit3 to your PC via the USB cable provided with the PICKit3
• Attach the PICkit3 to J7 on the CDC MC AES3 main board
• Switch on the CDC MC AES3
• Open MPLAB IPE on your PC
• Select PIC32MX675F512L from the Device dropdown menu
• Press Connect and wait for the PIC to be discovered (indicated by a green dot next to the
Connect button.)
• Select Erase
The message log in the application will report when the device has successfully erased.
• Drag and drop the MCOMMS_AES3_BTLDR_PIC_080316.hex into the MPLAB IPE or
browse for it
• Press Program
Logs will be displayed and should say Successful
• Press Verify
Logs will be displayed and should say Successful
• PIC LED 5 should be flashing indicating that the PIC is programmed correctly
• Power cycle the CDC MC AES3
• Programming Complete

Process for Programming the PIC MAIN on the CDC MC AES3
To programme the PIC MAIN on the CDC MC AES3 once the Bootloader has been updated you will require:
• A PC / laptop with a web browser (this procedure will not work with a Mac)
• Ethernet cable (Cat5 or Cat6)
Activate Boot Mode You will need to activate Boot Mode on the CDC MC AES3 to programme the AES3 via the front panel Ethernet port.
• On the CDC MC AES3 front panel “CONFIG” switch: put dip switch 8 ON (Up) and all other switches OFF (down) and then turn the CDC MC AES3 ON
• This will activate Boot Mode
If you are looking at the PCB the PIC LED should be flashing.

• Check your laptop Static IP address is 169.254.1.2
This can be done by following the instructions below:
• Go to the Windows Start menu
• Select Control Panel on the right hand list of programs
• Select Network & Internet
• Select Network and Sharing Centre
• Select Change Adapter Settings window on the top left
• Double click on Ethernet icon on the controller that is connected to the CDC
MC AES3
• Scroll down to Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPV4) and double click
• Select the Use the following IP address option
• Enter IP ADD 169.254.1.2
• Enter Subnet Mask to 255.255.0.0
• Leave all other fields blank
• Click OK
• Your network card is now programmed
• Plug your laptop into Ethernet port on CDC MC AES3
Ethernet Port

• Run the MComms_Router_PIC_Update.exe on your PC
• In the Ethernet check box select Enable
• Set IP Address in programme: 169.254.1.1
• Make sure UDP PORT 6234 is displayed
• Select “Connect” on the right
This initiates communication between the computer and the AES3 unit
If the Output window shows a message like the one below then the connection to the
CDC MC AES3 has failed, you will need to double check your connection and
settings again.

• Select Load HEX File
• Browse to the latest HEX File: MCOMMS_AES3_MAIN_PIC_xxxxxx.hex
• After selecting HEX FILE select Erase program verify
The Output window will show the message: Successful
• Power OFF the CDC MC AES3
• Disconnect you PC from the CDC MC AES3’s Ethernet port
• Turn dip switch 8 OFF (down)
• Power ON the CDC MC AES3
• If you have the lid off the unit check LED 5 next to the PIC U16 is flashing around ONCE a second (replace and screw down lid if off)

Process for Programming the FPGA on the CDC MC AES3
To programme the FPGA on the CDC MC AES3 you will require:
• A PC / laptop with a web browser (this procedure will not work with a Mac)
• Ethernet cable (Cat5 or Cat6)
Process for Reprogramming
• Set the network card on the PC to IP address 169.254.1.2 and the subnet mask to
255.255.0.0
Skip this if you have done it already – if not follow the instructions laid out earlier in

• Start the web browser on the PC and type “http://mchpboard/mpfsupload" into the address
bar and hit enter
To see what version of FPGA code is running currently on the CDC MC AES3 type in http://mchpboard
• If the browser fails to connect, switch between the following web addresses about once every
2 seconds to connect:
http://mchpboard
http://mchpboard/mpfsupload
• When the http://mchpboard/mpfsupload page loads you should see *MPFS Image Upload* and a Choose File and Upload button.
• Select Choose File and a browser window should appear
• Browse to and open the MComms_AES3_FPGA_xxxxxx.bin *.bin file
• Select Upload on the web page
Wait for up to 60-90 seconds and Upload successful will appear on the page
• Power cycle the unit
• Wait 5 seconds and the Master LED on the front of the unit should illuminate (plus if the lid is
still off the unit the LED next to the FPGA should flash green)
• The unit is now fully programmed
