rOn July 27, 2009, Dr. Scott Eaton was named Athletic Director at

Northern Kentucky University.

Eaton has worked at NKU as an administrator since 1998, and most recently served as the senior associate athletic director for administration. During his career at NKU, Eaton has played key roles in the academic, compliance, budget, event management and facility areas. He also served as NKU’s interim assistant vice president for student affairs from 2007-08.

Prior to NKU, Eaton worked at Brown University in Providence, R.I., as special assistant to the athletic director and assistant men’s basketball coach. Eaton graduated from Bowdoin College in 1986 after participating in basketball, lacrosse, cross country and track.

He later earned master’s degrees from both Fitchburg State College and Springfield College before receiving his doctorate from Boston University.

Eaton replaces Jane Meier as NKU’s athletic director. Meier announced her resignation in April after spending 21 years as NKU’s athletic director.

“I am both honored and excited about the opportunity that Dr. Votruba and Dr. Davenport have presented to me, knowing that it is a monumental task to try to match the legacy that Jane Meier leaves behind,” Eaton said. “While this marks the end of an incredible era, it provides us an opportunity for a new beginning for NKU athletics.”

“The standards of excellence and the core values that have guided NKU to both local and national success, and respect as an institution, will remain the same,” Eaton added. “Those values will guide our athletic department into the future, where we intend to further that success, excellence, and growth in the classroom and on the playing field.”

hTodd Asalon is entering his 11th season as the baseball head coach at Northern Kentucky

University. Asalon owns a 362-229-1 record in 10 years as the Norse head coach and has led NKU to the NCAA Division II Tournament five times. His 220 wins in Great Lakes Valley Conference play are the most by any league coach over the last 10 years.

During his tenure, eight players, including seven pitchers, have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Jake Shaffer became the first NKU field player to be drafted when he was selected in the 15th round by the Seattle Mariners in the 2008 draft.

Last season, Asalon returned to the NCAA Tournament on the heels of a 43-17 season and topped the GLVC East division for the second consecutive season with a 24-6 league record. The Norse saw several offensive records broken, both individually and at the team level, and led the nation in doubles and doubles per game.

Two years ago, Asalon earned his first back-to-back GLVC championships as the Norse finished 41-22, earning Asalon his third GLVC Coach of the Year award. The five conference championships over the past eight seasons are equaled only by ABCA Hall of Fame coach Irish O’Reilly, who accomplished the feat while coaching Lewis between 1985 and 1992. Additionally, Asalon’s squad led the GLVC in both team hitting and team pitching on the season

while 11 players earned All-GLVC honors, including GLVC Player of the Year Evan McDole.

In 2008, Asalon led the Norse to a 38-24 record and their fourth Great Lakes Valley Conference title in the previous seven years. The Norse did so in dramatic fashion, losing in the opening game of the GLVC Tournament before rallying back to victory. Asalon is the first coach in GLVC history to amass four titles so quickly into his tenure and only the second coach in GLVC history to accumulate four conference titles such a short span.

In 2007, the Norse finished 27-26 and claimed the GLVC Pitcher of the Year in Matt Marksbury. The Norse challenged themselves early, taking on the previous three national champions – Delta State, Florida Southern and Tampa – in the first three weeks of the season.

Asalon guided NKU to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship in 2006 and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse finished 42-20-1 overall, 36-11-1 in the GLVC. The 42 wins are the most for NKU since 1989, when the Norse finished 45-9.

Five years ago, Asalon led NKU to a 31-26 record. It marked the fourth time in five years that Asalon led the Norse to at least 30 victories.

In 2004, Asalon guided NKU to a 37-25 record and its second Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament championship in three years. The Norse also advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament and featured GLVC Pitcher of the Year Derrik Moeves, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2005.

In 2002, Asalon led NKU to a 37-24 record and guided the Norse to their first-ever GLVC Tournament championship. Asalon was named GLVC Coach of the Year in 2002, and he guided the Norse to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time since 1990.

Asalon, who spent six years as the baseball head coach at Thomas More College prior to taking the NKU position in 2000, is a 1994 graduate of NKU. Asalon played baseball for the Norse from 1980-83, and he was a three-year starter at catcher.

Asalon earned All-Region honors in 1981 and served as team captain in both 1982 and ‘83.

He later was an assistant baseball coach for the Norse from 1991-94, before taking the Thomas More coaching job in 1994.

“This is a great opportunity to go back and coach where I played college baseball, and it is a dream come true to coach the baseball program at Northern Kentucky University,” said Asalon, who posted a 144-92 record in six years at Thomas More.

Asalon led Thomas More to a school-record 32 victories in 2000 and its first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. He was named Association of Mideast Colleges Conference Coach of the Year in 1995.

In addition to being the baseball coach, Asalon also served as Thomas More’s athletic director for two years.

Dizzy PeytonPitching Coach

Dizzy Peyton returns for his third year as a full-time assistant coach after serving for two seasons as a volunteer assistant. Peyton will be responsible for the development of the Norse pitching staff.

Peyton coached the Quincy Gems of the Central Illinois Collegiate League during the summer of 2007.

Since joining the NKU staff in 2005, Peyton has sent nine pitchers into the professional ranks, including four by way of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

In 2006, his pitching staff picked up a GLVC-best 41 wins and struck out a league-high 122 batters looking out of 399 total strikeouts en route to a GLVC championship and an appearance in the NCAA North Central Regional.

Peyton played one season with the Norse in 2003. He maintained a 3-3 record with a 4.44 earned run average, striking out 44 batters while walking just 20. Post-season Tommy John surgery ended Peyton’s playing career after just one season.

GLVC TOURNAMENTST. LOUIS – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team began its quest for a third consecutive Great Lakes Valley

Conference Tournament championship Thursday afternoon with a 6-0 win against Saint Joseph’s in the first round.Dave Middendorf and Kevin Jordan combined on the shutout for NKU, which is ranked 17th nationally in the latest NCAA

Division II poll. Middendorf scattered six hits in seven innings of work and struck out eight batters to improve to 8-1 this season. The junior left-hander walked just one batter and gave way to Jordan after striking out the side in the seventh inning.

Jordan, who was named the GLVC’s Pitcher of the Year the previous day, tossed two scoreless innings and had two strikeouts. NKU, the two-time defending GLVC Tournament champion, will face Bellarmine in the second round at noon Friday at the Missouri-St. Louis Baseball Field.

Bryan Rose drove in two runs and scored twice for NKU, which improved to 41-13. Jason Cisper scored a pair of runs for the Norse, while Shannon McCormick knocked in two runs.

NKU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when McCormick drove in Rose from third base with a grounder to second. The Norse plated two more runs in the third inning on RBI singles from Evan McDole and Jeff Bohlen to extend the lead to 3-0.

Middendorf coasted through the first five innings, allowing just three singles. Saint Joseph’s rallied in the sixth with back-to-back singles to start the frame, but Middendorf retired the next three batters to keep the shutout and a 3-0 lead.

McCormick was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend NKU’s advantage to 4-0. Rose sealed the win for NKU in the bottom of the seventh by blasting a two-run double off the base of the center-field wall to drive in Brian Erie and Cisper.

NKU, which is the No. 2 overall seed in the GLVC Tournament, won despite stranding 12 runners on base. Saint Joseph’s (30-21) committed four errors that led to three unearned runs and Puma pitchers also hit three NKU batters.

During the regular season, NKU defeated Saint Joseph’s three times in four meetings.NKU has made a habit of winning the GLVC Tournament title in even-numbered years, having claimed the title in 2002, ’04, ’06

and ’08, in addition to last season’s championship.

ST. LOUIS – Any thoughts of three-peating as Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament champions ended Friday for Northern Kentucky University after losses to Bellarmine and Saint Joseph’s.

NKU, the two-time GLVC Tournament champion and ranked 17th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, began the day by dropping a 7-4 decision to Bellarmine. The Norse then faced Saint Joseph’s in an elimination game and managed just four hits during a 6-4 loss to the Pumas.

NKU is now 41-15 and will wait to find out its seed in the upcoming NCAA Division II Tournament. The Norse are currently No. 3 in the Midwest Region poll.

Bellarmine wasted no time in jumping on NKU in the opener as Patrick Brady hit a three-run homer off Ryan Schmidt in the bottom of the first inning to give the Knights a 3-0 lead.

With Bellarmine holding a 4-1 lead in the seventh inning, NKU’s Jake Morris hammered a solo home run over the wall in right field to make it a 4-2 game. In the eighth inning, the Norse loaded the bases with one out and Joe Mack was sent in to pinch hit.

Saint Joseph’s reliever Cory Thomas missed the strike zone with his first two pitches to Mack. With the count 2-0, Mack popped up a Thomas fastball to short left field and all runners had to hold. Morris then ended the threat by hitting a grounder to shortstop.

Bellarmine scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to extend the lead to 7-2. Bryan Rose homered to right field with a runner aboard in the ninth to cut the Bellarmine advantage to 7-4, and Pat Muth followed with a single. Thomas, though, battled back and induced Evan McDole to hit into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.

In the elimination game, Saint Joseph’s built an early 4-0 lead and held on to defeat NKU despite committing five errors. Puma starting pitcher Steve Styck scattered four hits and allowed just two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings to get the win.

NKU cut the Saint Joseph’s lead to 6-4 in the eighth inning and had the bases loaded with two outs. Eric Panick relieved Styck and induced Morris to pop up to first base in foul ground on a 3-2 pitch to stop the NKU threat.

Panick finished off the ninth inning and picked up the save for Saint Joseph’s, which improved to 32-21. NKU had defeated Saint Joseph’s in the first round of the GLVC Tournament on Thursday by a 6-0 score.

NCAA MIDWEST REGIONALEVANSVILLE, Ind. – A Jordan-esque performance on the mound helped Northern Kentucky University defeat Wayne State

(Mich.) in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Thursday.NKU starting pitcher Kevin Jordan scattered six hits and did not allow an earned run as the Norse hung on for a 2-1 victory

against Wayne State in the Midwest Regional Tournament. Jordan also struck out five batters and survived three errors by his defense to improve to 8-3 this season.

Jordan also set an NKU single-season record for innings pitched (103 2/3 innings) with the complete-game performance. NKU, ranked 22nd nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, improved to 42-15 overall and will meet Grand Valley State at 8 p.m. Friday in the winner’s bracket.

Jordan – the rubber-armed left-hander who is normally NKU’s relief specialist - outdueled Wayne State’s Justin Mazur, who limited the Norse to just four hits. NKU pushed across single runs in the first and sixth innings, and held off a ninth-inning rally by Wayne State that ended with center fielder Max Colaner making a diving catch of a sinking liner off the bat of Kyle Vesey with runners on first and second.

Colaner’s catch preserved NKU’s win and allowed the Norse to snap a streak of three straight losses to Wayne State. The Warriors, in fact, eliminated NKU from the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

Evan McDole’s run-scoring single in the first inning plated Jason Cisper to give NKU a 1-0 lead. Bryan Rose advanced to third on McDole’s hit, giving the Norse runners on the corners with one out.

Shannon McCormick followed with a fly ball to center field, and Rose attempted to score after Vesey’s catch. Vesey, however, gunned down Rose at the plate to stop the NKU threat.

NKU added an insurance run in the sixth when McCormick lined a hit up the middle to drive in McDole from second to make it 2-0. McDole was hit by a pitch with two outs and then stole second base.

Jordan, who was named the Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year earlier in the day, was in control most of the way. McCormick’s second error of the game kept a Wayne State rally alive in the ninth inning, and the Warriors finally scored when pinch-hitter Brad Guenther laid down a perfectly-placed bunt single to drive in Ryan LaPensee from third with two outs.

Vesey stepped to the plate and hit a sinking liner to right-center field, but Colaner raced in and made the diving catch to end the game.

Wayne State, the champion of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, dropped to 32-19. NKU is the No. 3 seed in the Midwest Regional, while Wayne State is No. 4. Southern Indiana is the top seed and host for the tournament.

The double-elimination Midwest Region Tournament runs through Sunday, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division II World Series at Cary, N.C.

NOTE: Prior to Thursday, NKU’s last complete-game performance in postseason play came from Derrik Moeves on May 12, 2005, a 2-1 win against Quincy in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – If Northern Kentucky University is going to advance to the NCAA Division II World Series, the Norse will have to do it the hard way.

That became evident Friday night after NKU dropped a 7-1 decision to No. 2 seed Grand Valley State in the second round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. The third-seeded Norse, who knocked off Wayne State (Mich.) in the opening round Thursday, will have to win four games during the next two days to claim the regional title and earn a trip to the NCAA Division II World Series.

Grand Valley State (36-14) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Steve Anderson connected for a two-run homer off NKU starter Dave Middendorf. Anderson’s home run, his ninth of the season, was a drive that hit the very top of the wall in left-center field and bounced over.

NKU (42-16) could not solve Grand Valley State right-hander Jared Knuth, who entered the fourth inning with a no-hitter. Evan McDole ended Knuth’s no-hitter by lining a double down the left-field line with two outs. Shannon McCormick followed with a walk, and Jeff Bohlen’s double down the right-field line drove in McDole to cut Grand Valley State’s lead to 2-1.

Knuth toughened up, though, and struck out Larry Pempek to leave runners stranded on second and third. He scattered five hits and struck out seven NKU batters en route to the complete-game victory for the Lakers, who are ranked 20th nationally in the NCAA Division II poll.

Grand Valley State extended its lead to 4-1 by plating two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Torre Aguirre drilled a run-scoring triple to deep center field, and Zach Laupp plated Aguirre with an infield single that made it 4-1.

The Lakers sealed the win in the seventh by scoring twice. Kyle Gendron’s RBI double made it 5-1, and Andrew Trepel’s run-scoring single extended the Grand Valley State advantage to 6-1. The Lakers added another run in the eighth and cruised behind the pitching of Knuth.

NKU, which is ranked No. 22 in the NCAA Division II poll, meets Indianapolis in an elimination game Saturday at 4 p.m. The survivor of that game plays the Grand Valley State/Southern Indiana loser later that evening in another elimination contest.

The double-elimination Midwest Region Tournament runs through Sunday, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division II World Series at Cary, N.C.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Northern Kentucky University offense that has been missing in action suddenly reappeared Saturday against Indianapolis during an elimination game in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

And the biggest hit came off the bat of Jeff Bohlen in the top of the 10th inning, a two-run single that keyed NKU’s 15-12 victory over Indianapolis in the Midwest Regional. Bohlen’s single through the right side of the infield drove in Jason Cisper and Bryan Rose to snap a 12-all tie, giving NKU a 14-12 lead.

Joe Mack added an RBI single later in the 10th to extend the Norse advantage to 15-12, and Chase Stewart set down Indianapolis in the bottom of the inning to notch the victory.

NKU clubbed four home runs as part of a 20-hit attack. Rose hit a pair of homers and drove in three runs to lead the third-seeded Norse, who improved to 43-16 and advanced to meet top-seeded Southern Indiana in another elimination game later Saturday night.

NKU started off strongly in the first inning as Rose and Evan McDole hit back-to-back home runs to give the Norse a 2-0 lead. NKU later built a 5-1 lead by scoring three times in the fourth inning and appeared on its way to an easy win.

Indianapolis, however, countered by scoring four times in the bottom of the fourth to tie the contest at 5-all.NKU responded in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer by Jason Cisper, a shot over the right-field wall that gave the

Norse a 7-5 advantage. Rose then followed with his second homer of the game, a prodigious blast into the trees in right-center field that extended the Norse lead to 8-5.

Indianapolis plated six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 11-8 lead. A controversial safe call by second base umpire Shane Friebe on an apparent force play at second ignited the Greyhound rally. NKU reliever Kevin Jordan was charged with six earned runs during the Indianapolis rally in the sixth inning.

NKU, however, fought back and scored four times in the seventh to regain the lead at 12-11. Jake Morris tied the game at 11-all with a pinch-hit single that drove in Brian Erie, and, after Cisper was hit by a pitch, Rose lined a single to center to drive in Morris from second base to give NKU a 12-11 advantage.

Indianapolis tied the game at 12-all with a run in the bottom of the eighth. The Greyhounds had the bases loaded, but Stewart worked out of the jam.

Cisper led off the 10th with a single and stole second base. Rose was given an intentional walk, but McDole struck out swinging with runners on first and second.

NKU then pulled off a double steal with Shannon McCormick at the plate, with Cisper taking third and Rose going to second. After McCormick was walked to load the bases, Bohlen lined a single through the right side to give NKU a 14-12 lead.

Bohlen went 3-for-6 and drove in four runs for NKU, while Rose was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. McCormick was 3-for-4 and scored three times, while Mack also collected three hits.

In the second elimination game, top-seeded Southern Indiana posted a 6-5 win against the Norse. NKU played Southern Indiana an hour after defeating Indianapolis, but the Norse were unable to sustain the momentum against the host Screaming Eagles (46-13) early in the game.

Southern Indiana jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning, but NKU scored single runs in the third and fourth stanzas to tie the game at 2-all. Caleb Ehmke, however, led off the fourth with a triple for Southern Indiana and later scored on an RBI single by Wandy Rosario to give the Screaming Eagles a 3-2 lead.

Southern Indiana scored two more runs in the fifth to extend its advantage to 5-2, and NKU was unable to overcome five errors in the defeat. NKU rallied and cut the deficit to 6-5 in the top of the ninth and had the tying run on third with two outs, but Trevor Leach induced Bohlen to ground out to second to end the game. NKU finished the season with a 43-17 record.

Southern Indiana will meet Grand Valley State on Sunday in the championship round. The Screaming Eagles will have to beat Grand Valley State twice to earn the trip to the NCAA Division II World Series.

NOTE: Cisper finished with a .442 batting average this season. He also finished with a Norse single-season record 102 hits and 26 doubles. Cisper, a Moeller High School graduate, also stole 39 bases in 43 attempts this spring. McDole finished his career with 174 runs batted in and tied John Heeter’s school record in that category. The Bishop Brossart High School graduate drove in 65 runs this season and collected 22 doubles.
