QUESTION: How many announcements does ittake to get Sunrise Rotarians to actually hear whatyou say?

ANSWER: As many as the president will allow youdeliver, again and again, at every meeting.

ALERT: President Eloise Tweeten has limitedSteve Zwick to only three minutes at eachmeeting for announcements pertaining to ourupcoming fundraiser -- one of only two S R Sunrisefundraisers each year that raise funds for local andinternational support of worthy projects. Many years ago, in Kolkata, India, I had the chanceto meet Mother Teresa. She was an incrediblewoman with an incredible force of personality. When she walked down the street, the crowdparted in front of her like the Red Sea. Yet when

you talked to her, if you mentioned thetremendous things she had done, she almost didnot engage in this topic at all. By many reports, ifyou asked her what her greatest achievement was,she would answer, "I am an expert in cleaningtoilets."

The answer was both humorous and absolutelyserious. Her business was caring for others. Toiletshad to be cleaned, so she cleaned them. There wasno question of a job being beneath her. Helpingpeople who needed help was her work, and therewas nothing higher, nothing in the world moreimportant than that.

So one day, when an elegantly dressed man cameto Kolkata looking for Mother Teresa, the nuns whoanswered the door informed him that she was atthe back of the house, cleaning the toilets. Theypointed the way, and indeed he found MotherTeresa scrubbing the toilets. She said hello, assumed he was there to volunteer, and beganexplaining to him how to hold the toilet brushcorrectly and how not to waste water. Then sheput the brush in his hand and left him standingthere, in his expensive suit, alone in the lavatory.

Later, the man came out, found Mother Teresaagain, and said, "I have finished; may I speak withyou now?" "Yes, certainly," she said. He took anenvelope out of his pocket and said, "MotherTeresa, I am the director of the airline, and hereare your tickets. I just wanted to bring them toyou personally."

That airline director told that story again and againfor the rest of his life. He said those 20 minutesspent cleaning toilets had filled him with thegreatest joy he had ever known – because byputting his hands to Mother Teresa's work, hebecame part of that work. For those 20 minutes,he cared for the sick just as she did: with his ownhands, his own sweat.

That is exactly the opportunity that Rotary givesus. We might not do what Mother Teresa did – giveup our lives, our homes, our families. But for 20minutes, 20 hours, 20 days of the year, we can belike her.

We can do the work that others will not with ourhands, and our hearts, and our sweat, and ourdevotion – knowing that what we do is the mostimportant work in the world.

Ray Klinginsmith

Trustee Chair 2015-16

The numbers are impressive: Rotary comprisesmore than 35,000 clubs with 1.2 million membersin 200 countries and geographic regions. It's bigenough to be a major partner in the eradication ofpolio, the largest health initiative ever undertaken!

Despite its size and reach, Rotary is accessible tomembers through their individual clubs, whichprovide outstanding opportunities for friendship, fellowship, and networking at the local level. As aresult, most Rotarians think of their involvement asprimarily local, with ideas for service projects

limited to their communities. They shouldrecognize that, with the assistance of The RotaryFoundation, the sky is the limit!

Every great idea in Rotary has started in the mindof an individual. Even the success of End Polio Nowcan be traced to a few notable Rotarians aroundthe world: Clem Renouf of Australia, for example, proposed a large corporate project to increaseRotary's visibility, while U.S. Rotarian John Severidentified polio as a worthwhile target. Each had anidea that was accepted and supported by otherRotarians, and polio will soon be eliminated fromthe world as a result.

When Rotarians begin to think of service projectsbeyond the size and scope of their clubs, they haveaccess to district and global grants from TheRotary Foundation. They also have access to ateam of Rotary volunteers at the district level, starting with their district governors and districtRotary Foundation chairs, to help them along theway. They also have the support of regionalleaders, including the regional Rotary Foundationcoordinators, and the entire Rotary staff inEvanston, Ill., and in the international offices.

Who knows where the next great ideas for Rotarywill come from? Since Rotary is a grassrootsorganization, they are likely to come fromindividual Rotarians. It behooves all of us toencourage good ideas within the six areas of focusand direct local Rotarians with good ideas to TheRotary Foundation's resources. After all, it is themission of the Foundation "to enable Rotarians" todo good in the world!

Sometimes it is good to question authority figures. Lorenzo Dueñas did as an aspiring young man inhigh school when he ignored a counselor’ssuggestion that he need not apply to college. Hewas advised he would not be a successful student. Decades later, Lorenzo holds advanced degreesand is himself an unmistakably proven, trustedauthority figure: He is Chief of the Santa RosaJunior College Police Department.

Lorenzo studied and worked alongside colleagues inBrazil as part of a Rotary Group Study Exchange. He organized stateside efforts to aid disabledBrazilian officers who received no service benefitsfor on-the-job injuries.

Social Media is another new dimension of lawenforcement, along with body worn cameras. Transported drug trafficking also is an issue. ErinDunn, District Governor hailing from Fortunaintroduced 2016-17 Governor-Elect WulffReinhold from Rohnert Park. Sunrise scion DelRaby received a hearty applause, as did each ofthe many past District Governors and current ClubPresidents in attendance.

DGE Wulff presented his upcoming term’s peacepursuit priority. With a straw vote, and there wasa lot of straw/hay on hand for his western hoe-down theme, Wulff garnered a hearty affirmativeresponse. Inspired by his experience at the recentZone Peace Conference in Ontario, California,Wulff wants to further the efforts currently afoot toteach constructive conflict resolution skills andstrategies.

The following day, Wulff introduced KeynoteSpeaker Elizabeth Gore and in this novel, informalinterview format helped her share her insights andvision as former United Nations Chair of GlobalEntrepreneurs for Rotarian action in local andglobal peace initiatives: Attend, Join, Advocate!! Sunrise Rotary was well represented: PresidentEloise, President Elect Merle Hayes, DistrictVocational Service Chair Peter Hoberg, CarmenGutierrez, Doug Shureen, Rich Randolph, PDG DelRaby, Dicksie Tamanaha and Steve Zwick nearlytook an entire table end!

Death on the Highway

When would you see an entire auditorium ofteenagers struck stone silent? According toShauna Lorenzen this happens during the two-day California Highway Patrol program for schoolchildren titled “Every 15 Minutes.”

At the annual cost of $7,000 the program, whichincludes police, ambulances, a helicopter and afully enacted funeral, complete with grievingparents, portrays what occurs every 15 minutes, somewhere in the US, because of a drunk driver.

“Every 15 Minutes” seeks funding in order tocontinue its dramatic life saving work in SonomaCounty schools. Max Childs reports that his twindaughters went through the program and weredeeply moved.

K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran

President 2015-16

Many years ago, in Kolkata, India, I had the chanceto meet Mother Teresa. She was an incrediblewoman with an incredible force of personality. When she walked down the street, the crowdparted in front of her like the Red Sea. Yet whenyou talked to her, if you mentioned thetremendous things she had done, she almost didnot engage in this topic at all.

So one day, when an elegantly dressed man cameto Kolkata looking for Mother Teresa, the nuns who

answered the door informed him that she was atthe back of the house, cleaning the toilets.

As aresult, most Rotarians think of their involvement asprimarily local, with ideas for service projectslimited to their communities.

Rotarian John Sever

identified polio as a worthwhile target.

Principally designed to develop student’s knowledge, understanding and skills for scientific investigation anddemonstration Challenge students are offered multiplecategories to explore, collaborate and compete in groups upto seventeen in size. Verbal communication is challengedin such activities as replicating a lego’s construct frombehind a concealing panel. Students must articulate thepattern of a fixed, glued design as the team member on theother side attempts to build he same with equal numbers ofloose legos. Another very popular enterprise is designing and building astructure to protect a falling, uncooked “naked” egg. Thewinner’s design safely caught the egg from a height ofnearly 10 feet! Catapults are built, mystery animalsidentified, tall towers built and this year helicopter flightadded. Judging by the number of enthusiastic participants, scientific inquiry is alive and well in Sonoma CountySchools! For additional information, contact Mike [email protected].

Greetings Rotarians and friends of Rotarians, On Saturday, April 30th, the ALS Association ishaving their annual Walk to Defeat ALS atHowarth Park. Walk up check-in begins at9:30am, and the 1.5 mile walk starts at 11am. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is aprogressive neurodegenerative disease that affectsnerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motorneurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord andthen to the muscles throughout the body. Theprogressive degeneration of the motor neurons inALS eventually leads to the death of the neurons, and when they die, the ability of the brain toinitiate and control muscle movement is lost. Withvoluntary muscle action progressively affected,

What Kerstin Jeska-Thorwart remembers isthe silence. No birdschirping, no dogsbarking, no car enginesrevving. Nothing. “I’venever heard such asilence before, andnever since,” she says.“I knew somethingmust have happened.”

It was 9:35 themorning after Christmas 2004, and in Sri Lanka, itwas a Poya Day, a Buddhist public holiday heldevery full moon. Jeska-Thorwart, a lawyer fromGermany, was on vacation in Hikkaduwa, on theisland’s southwestern coast. Any other morning ofher holiday she and her husband would have beenon the beach, but today they stayed back at theirvacation home, up a small hill about a half-milefrom the water’s edge, to clean and prepare forguests.

After a few minutes, sound returned, as though ithad been switched on. Now she heard peoplerunning, crying. She went down the main road tosee what had happened. She saw people inswimming suits, shoeless, covered in blood.

They told her there was a big wave.

The tsunami, as she later learned, was causedwhen an earthquake with the estimated force of23,000 atomic bombs rattled the floor of the IndianOcean. The seabed rose 10 feet, displacing 7 cubicmiles of water. A wall of water, in some places upto 100 feet high, slammed into countriesthroughout Southeast Asia and as far away asAfrica. All told, more than 230,000 people died in14 countries, and 1.7 million were left homeless.More than half of the dead were in Indonesia, followed by Sri Lanka, where 35,000 people werekilled.

Sri Lanka was hit by several waves that day. Theyknocked out cellphone service, land lines, electricity, television, radio. Jeska-Thorwart, thengovernor of District 1950 (Germany), opened upthe house as a makeshift first aid clinic. Four dayslater, when the situation had stabilized, she andher husband, the late Carl-Otto Thorwart – himselfa member of the Rotary Club of Nürnberg-Sigena –together with some Sri Lankan friends, drove downthe coast looking for clues to the extent of thedamage. “We had no information about what had

happened,” she says. “Was it only Hikkaduwa thatwas hit, or other towns too?”

The first city they came to was Galle, about 12miles south. Conquered by the Portuguese in the16th century and fortified by the Dutch in the 17th,the city had long served as the main port betweenEurope and the East. The tsunami killed 4,000people in the city and damaged 12,000 houses.“Every minute that went by,” Jeska-Thorwart saysof her Sri Lankan companions, “they were moreand more silent. They were completely shocked. They realized their country was destroyed.”

On the edge of the city, directly across the roadfrom the beach, the group arrived at a hospital. Itwas Mahamodara Teaching Hospital, the primarymaternity hospital in the province of 2.5 millionpeople. “It was totally empty,” Jeska-Thorwartrecalls. One of the women in the car had deliveredfour children there, and when she saw thedevastation, she cried out: “Where are the babies?”

When the first wave of the tsunami slammed intothe hospital, deliveries had been underway.Although the 10-foot wall around the hospital couldnot stop the wave, it buffered its force, so thewater was only 4 feet high by the time it reachedthe prenatal ward that faced the sea. The powerfailed, the backup generator failed, the watersupply and sewer systems failed. Patients’mattresses were soaked with foul-smelling water. The 349 patients were evacuated, first to a nearbytemple, then to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, acouple of miles inland. By the time the subsequentwaves hit Mahamodara, no patients or staffremained on site. One baby had died.

Upon learning that the patients and staff had beenmoved, Jeska-Thorwart and her companions wentto check on them. Only the most urgent cases hadbeen transferred – others were sent home – andthe maternity hospital had been squeezed into 70beds in the male neurology wing and portions oftwo other wards at Karapitiya. Jeska-Thorwart sawpregnant women sitting outside in the rain. Theylay in beds to deliver and moved to the floor torecover. There were not enough toilets; there wasnowhere to eat or drink. “It was a horriblesituation,” she says. She asked to speak to adoctor.

Her first words to him were: “Don’t worry. We willhelp you.”

“Excuse me, may I know your name?” asked MalikGoonewardene, the head of the obstetrics andgynecology department at the University of Ruhuna

in Galle and a consultant at Mahamodara TeachingHospital. He eyed Jeska-Thorwart, who wasdressed in a T-shirt and shorts, like a tourist.

“I’m from Rotary. I want to help you.”

Goonewardene invited her into a meeting wherethe Mahamodara doctors were gathered. Jeska-Thorwart explained who she was and asked thedoctors to compile a list of everything theyneeded. (She still has it.)

A few days later, she drove to Colombo, which –because of its location on the island’s westerncoast – had not been damaged as severely. Sheasked local Rotarians to email the list to her officein Germany. By the time she returned home on 6January, her office was jammed with medicalequipment, and by 10 January, German Rotarianshad shipped the doctors 2 tons of supplies, including scalpels, drapes, arm slings, gloves, threeultrasound scanners, and 1,360 diapers. Less thana month later, they shipped another 7 tons.

And that was only the beginning.

A decade later, Mahamodara Teaching Hospital’sonly ward that has not been replaced orrefurbished after the tsunami stands empty. Inside, pieces of plaster are falling off the walls. A coupleof old bed frames are stacked in a corner, andwires hang from the ceilings. The building dates tothe 1800s, when the hospital was built toquarantine South Indian immigrants arriving towork on Sri Lanka’s plantations and vaccinate themagainst smallpox.

In contrast are the bright and airy new buildingsdesigned by Lakshman Alwis, an architect and amember of the Rotary Club of Colombo. Inside one, lofted ceilings with vents allow the tropical heat torise, so the building stays comfortable without airconditioning. Large windows illuminate a roomfilled with beds where women rest, waiting todeliver. Since patients come from all over theprovince, many arrive before their due date so theydon’t have to travel while in labor. The hospitalserves the entire socioeconomic spectrum; the wifeof its deputy director delivered her baby here.

Within a few weeks of the tsunami, more than6,000 German Rotarians had donated €1.3 million, and in 2008, The Rotary Foundation supported theproject. Other partners included German-headquartered global corporations such asSiemens, Trumpf, and Ejot, as well as a foundationset up by former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who had been vacationing at a coastal resortsoutheast of Galle when the tsunami hit.

In the past 11 years, this funding has helpedrenovate or build 10 departments and wards, andprovided equipment worth more than €1 million. The Rotary Club of Colombo, which partnered withDistrict 1950 on the Foundation grant, managedmuch of the construction. Since work started,160,000 babies have been born and more than 2.5million women have received gynecological care. In2014, a year the hospital saw more than 12,000births, not one mother died – a statistic manyWestern hospitals would covet. “That speaksvolumes about what we have been able to achievehere,” says RI President K.R. Ravindran, a memberof the Rotary Club of Colombo.

“When this hospital got damaged and we had toevacuate, it was an absolute calamity. We didn’tknow what to do,” says Goonewardene. “Withoutour donors, including Rotary, who came to our aidfrom the start, I don’t know how we would havemanaged.”

The project has included many steps over theyears: first, operating rooms and intensive careunits for mothers and babies; then the prenatalwards; and, finally, training. Jeska-Thorwart,whom Rotary honored as a Global Woman of Actionat the United Nations in November, says they planto celebrate the completion of the project inJanuary 2017.

Since 2010, a team of doctors, midwives, andnurses has traveled once a year from Sri Lanka toGermany, and another from Germany to Sri Lanka, for training. At the biggest hospital in Nuremberg, where Jeska-Thorwart lives, only a couple of babiesare born each day. In contrast, the MahamodaraTeaching Hospital delivers 70 babies daily. Becauseof the number of births in Sri Lanka, the Germandoctors get more experience in the neonatalintensive care unit dealing with birth complications.Meanwhile, Sri Lankan doctors get experience onstate-of-the-art equipment in Germany.

The neonatal intensive care unit, one of the fewair-conditioned buildings at the hospital, is a worldof beeps and scrubs and needles. A 19-day-oldinfant lies in an incubator, connected to a neonatalCPAP machine to support her breathing, donatedby Rotary, which equipped the entire unit. Thenewborn, who arrived two months premature, wastransferred here because the hospital has some ofthe most advanced equipment in the country.“When I started here, I was amazed,” says SelviRupasinghe, the chief neonatologist. “Rotary’scontributions have made a tremendous change toneonatal care.”

Outside the unit, a woman holds a sleepy toddler in

The Sonoma Stompers succeeded the previousCrushers team in 2004. The team moved fromtheir own stadium to Arnold Field, a SonomaCounty 400 seat venue. Promoting baseball as afamily oriented entertainment venture, theStompers were their league champions in 2015. Players are either on their way up, or converselylooking for a soft landing after exiting AA, AAA oreven Major League play. One player was with theBoston Red Sox. “Major League Baseball is an elitesport, with far fewer spots on the roster than thereare players” Theo disclosed.

Life on the field reflects some social issues ofsociety at large. Case in point gender equality. Last season the Stompers pitcher Sean Conroycame out of the closet in the team’s LGBT PrideNight dubbed “Out at the Park”. The teamsupported Sean by wearing rainbow armbands andsocks. Conroy pitched a shut out.

Looking for a great read, and “Money Ball” is onyour shelf already? Try Ben Lindbergh and SamMiller’s “The Only Rule is it has to Work”. Thesetwo analysts wrote the book based on theirtheories of statistically based player selection. Their test case was the Stompers. Check out theprocess and results on Amazon, or Arnold Field.

For $10 an adult can gain a seat at fan friendlyArnold Field. Another $10 will get you a hot dogand beer. That isn’t even enough for parking atBay Area MLB stadiums. Some Stomper fans hadsuch a great time have even forgot who won thatday, they had so much fun watching the close upaction from all prime behind the plate seats, orrunning the bases for the seventh inning stretch.

Clubs: The Body Politic

From the April 2016issue of The Rotarian

Rotary clubs are catnipto people running forpublic office: Rotariansare involved in theircommunities, civic-minded, and engagedin public improvement.Especially in an electionyear, clubs are likely toreceive calls fromcandidates in search ofa receptive audience.

How a club responds to these requests iscompletely up to the club itself. For many, itdepends on experience with politicians and thepreferences of the club officers. RotaryInternational requires only that clubs not endorsecandidates or take sides on public issues.

But the role of politics in Rotary has been debatedsince the organization’s earliest years. At the 1916Rotary Convention, R.B. Campbell of Wichita, Kan.,opined on how involved clubs should be in political(“civic”) affairs: “I believe that politics should bebrought into the meetings,” he said. “We are abusiness organization, and it is to our interest to

see that the government of our city and state isrun properly.”

Samuel Botsford of Buffalo, N.Y., took the opposingview: “Rotary clubs have no business in politics.”Politics, he said, was about personality rather thanfacts, and therefore should not be brought intoclubs.

Eventually, it was decided that clubs shouldeducate their members on local political issues andthat individual members should do with theinformation as they saw fit. One hundred yearslater, that continues to be Rotary’s position on theplace of politics in clubs.

Given that freedom, some clubs have embraced arole in local politics. In 2014, Alan Burns, presidentof the Rotary Club of Cape Charles, Va., saw achance to provide a service to the community andraise Rotary’s profile at the same time by hosting acandidates forum. Local organizations that had heldsuch gatherings were no longer stepping up, so heasked the members of his club to put on the forumas a community service project. They agreed. “Wewanted to be able to educate the community aboutthe candidates,” says Wayne Bell, who organizedand moderated the event.

The key to success, says Bell, was theestablishment of a set of ground rules. Thecandidates were expected to answer screenedquestions from the audience, to respect timelimits, and, most crucially, to be respectful of oneanother. Nearly 100 community members showedup to hear the candidates speak, he says. “It wasvery successful. We’ll do it again this electionyear.”

Taking a different approach, the Rotary Club ofBangor, Maine, decided to devote a series of clubmeetings in fall 2014 to question-and-answersessions with candidates for major political officesin the state. “We asked every candidate in ourarea, regardless of their prospect of winning,” saysSusan Chaar, speaker coordinator for the club.Club leaders prepared a single set of questions forall the candidates in each race on issues such asMedicaid expansion, national security, and openprimaries. Members of the audience also submittedquestions.

One of the region’s incumbent politicians who hadpreviously visited the club regularly, Chaar says, decided against it in 2014 when she learned shewould have to answer specific questions and notsimply give a speech. “With everyone who came, itwas a positive experience, very educational, because we tried very hard to be fair,” says Chaar.

“It was well-received by our members, and we gotto know the candidates’ views on specific issues.”

The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset, Maui, is anhour’s drive from the seat of county governmentand a plane ride away from Hawaii’s capital,Honolulu, on the island of Oahu. The club is opento visits from any elected official or candidate, anytime. “We want to know what’s going on,” saysJenelle Van Eynde, a charter member of the club.“If they want to come, we want them. Some of ourlargest audiences have been for elected officials.”

The club also got a lot of recognition for bringingthe mayor and his opponent to a town hall-stylemeeting about a month before the election. “Wefelt we were lucky to get them both as speakers,”Van Eynde says. “We always try to get all sides. We think our club meetings are a healthy place fordialogue.”

Many clubs invite elected officials to becomemembers and believe they benefit from havingthese officials easily accessible. Other clubs, suchas the Rotary Club of Barrington Breakfast, Ill.,bestow honorary memberships on local politicians.

Still, your mother warned you against talkingpolitics in polite company for a reason. As Rotaryattracts a more diverse membership, people on allpoints of the political spectrum are likely to be atyour club. That can be a problem if politicians, making assumptions that Rotarians all share acertain political leaning, go on the attack againsttheir opponents. An incident of that sort, involvinga prominent elected official, occurred at my ownclub several years ago, embarrassing the memberswho supported that politician and outraging therest.

My club responded by barring political speakers, incumbent or not, during the year before theirelections, a solution that has removed politics fromthe club but perhaps also robbed it of a certainsense of civic involvement.

The Rotary Club of Greater Rochester, Minn.,devised a subtler approach. Its policy, posted onthe club’s website, allows officeholders to givepresentations at meetings on preapprovedinformational topics related to their office. Onecandidate or incumbent per meeting is also allowedto give a five-minute stump speech. The policyalso states that no political activity is permitted inthe 90 days leading up to an election.

“We have a lot of requests during election seasonfrom political speakers, and we wanted to be ‘fairto all concerned,’” notes member Bill Brueck. “Thispolicy gives us more control over the number of

requests and the content. We want to avoiddevoting a whole program to something that ispolitical and not informational.”

Instead of listening to politicians, your club couldjust make money off them – and have fun doing it.The Rotary Club of Salem, Ind., finds that they arean irresistible attraction at its dunk tank at thecounty fair. “People stand in line to dunk themayor, sheriff, councilmen, and other candidatesand elected officials,” says John Mead, who helpsorganize the annual event at the WashingtonCounty Fair. The club makes about $2,000 everytime – and now it’s rebuilding the dunk tank andputting it on wheels. Is any politician safe thisyear?

K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran

President 2015-16

Some years ago, in the Kano plains of Kenya, awell-meaning development agency took on the taskof improving water availability to a ruralcommunity. Committees were formed, meetingswere held, and the local people were consulted. The main need the community identified wasimproved delivery of water for irrigation andlivestock. A plan to meet this need was created, and the work was soon begun, exactly as thecommunity representatives had requested.

Yet once construction began, it was met byimmediate protest from groups of communitywomen, who came to the site and physicallyblocked workers from building diversion channels.Upon further investigation, the agency realized thatthe water it was diverting for farming came fromthe only source, for dozens of families, of water forcooking, drinking, and washing. The entire projecthad to be scrapped.

Why? Because it had never occurred to a single

member of the all-male team in charge to consultthe local women. At every stage, it was assumedthat the men knew the needs, spoke for thecommunity, and were able to represent it. Clearly, this was far from the case. The women knew theneeds of the community, and its resources, farbetter – but their opinion was never sought.

We have had women in Rotary for only the lastquarter of our history, and it is no coincidence thatthose years have been by far our most productive. In 1995, only 1 in 20 Rotarians were women;today, that number has risen to 1 in 5. It isprogress, but it is not enough. It is only commonsense that if we want to represent ourcommunities, we must reflect our communities, and if we want to serve our communities fully, wemust be sure that our communities are fullyrepresented in Rotary.

Rotary’s policy on gender equality is absolutelyclear. Yet nearly one-fifth of our clubs still refuseto admit women, usually by claiming that theysimply cannot find women who are qualified formembership. I would say that any Rotarian whomakes this argument, or believes it, himself lacksthe two most basic qualifications for Rotarymembership: honesty and good sense.

A club that shuts out women shuts out much morethan half the talent, half the ability, and half theconnections it should have. It closes out theperspectives that are essential to serving familiesand communities effectively. It damages not onlyits own service but our entire organization, byreinforcing the stereotypes that limit us the most.It leads our partners to take us less seriously, andit makes all of Rotary less attractive to potentialmembers, especially the young people who are socrucial to our future.

To tolerate discrimination against women is todoom our organization to irrelevance. We cannotpretend that we still live in Paul Harris’ time, norwould he ever want us to. For, as he said, “Thestory of Rotary will have to be written again andagain.” Let us see to it that the story we write inRotary is one of which he would be proud.
