QUESTIONNAIRE ANALYSIS

By Helen Mahoney

Page 2: Questionnaire analysis

I produced a questionnaire to hand out to 30 people in our target audience range. This was to collect some information for our documentary. I asked various questions which would help me get to know what our target range are interested in, like and dislike.

1. HOW OLD ARE YOU?

As we asked our target audience we asked people between the age of 16-30. 18 People we asked were 16-18, 5 were 19-21, 3 people were 22-25, 2 were aged 26-30 and only 2 were 30+. This is so we had a variation of different answers from different age ranges in our target audience.

4. DO YOU WEAR MAKEUP?

23 people who answered our questionnaire said that they do wear makeup and 7 said no. This was a good response because it was interesting to see what people who don't wear makeup thought about makeup. This gave us some interesting answering to consider in our documentary.

5. HOW OFTEN DO YOU WEAR MAKEUP?

43% said that they wear makeup everyday, 23% say weekends, 17% said rare occasions and 17% said never. This showed us that the majority do depend on makeup therefore it would be useful to have an interview with somebody who depends on makeup and to see the view from others on people who depend on makeup?

6. WHY DO YOU WEAR MAKEUP?

This was also an open ended question with no options and we received an interesting mix of answers. 7 people said they wear makeup to look better, 3 said to feel better, 3 people said to look more awake, 3 said to look healthier, we also had people say they use it to look prettier, 1 said to look cool, 6 people said to cover spots and 5 said they don't wear makeup. This was interesting that we had people say they wear it to look healthier because we could then look into the medical problems and how people can achieve the healthy look without makeup in our documentary.

7. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON MALES WEARING MAKEUP?

We asked this question as we wanted to interview males wearing makeup and drag queens. This would let us know what the general public think on this matter and whether we would get a good response from including this subject in our documentary. 23 people answered yes, they don't mind males wearing makeup, and 7 answered with, that they don't like or agree with males wearing makeup. This gives us an option to look at the changing trends of men and how their feminism in males has increased over the years.

8. DO YOU PREFER WOMEN WITH OR WITHOUT MAKEUP?

This question will allow us to provide some evidence on the popularity of makeup. This backs up what people think of makeup in our society today and will determine some questions we will ask in our interviews. 52% said they prefer women with makeup, and 48% said they prefer women without makeup. From this we decided to conduct an interview with somebody against makeup for various reasons whether it be cultural, religion or animal testing on makeup.

9. HOW OFTEN DO YOU BUY MAKEUP?

0% said that they buy makeup weekly, which shows that makeup is not a casual thing to buy. 7 people said monthly and 23 people said that they buy makeup when they need it. This shows that for most of the people who filled in our questionnaire makeup is a thing they do need but don't have a passion for it unlike some makeup artists who we will interview and explore their passion towards makeup and what made them choose makeup as a career.

10. HOW MUCH DO YOU SPEND ON MAKEUP ON AVERAGE?

This was a question with no options so we had a variation of answers. 13 people said that spend between £5-£20. 6 people said between £30-£40 and 2 people said they can spend on to £60. This shows the variation of makeup amongst brands. We will use this information in our documentary when we look at whether the more expensive brands are really better for us.

11. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BRAND OF MAKEUP?

We asked this question so we would know which brand is most popular and which makeup brand would be the most interesting to our target audience to interview for our documentary. This was also an open answer question and we received a variation of familiar brands which people liked the most. The brand which was the most popular was M.A.C Cosmetics with 11 people saying this was their favourite. Benefit and Bobbi Brown had 5 people each saying they favour this brand. This is interesting because the most popular brands are the most expensive ones which makes me think that the more expensive ones are more popular because they actually are better. I will explore this in my documentary with an interview with a makeup artist comparing different makeup's. 3 people said they favour Loreal and Barry M each and 1 person said they like Max Factor. Two people said the like the brand Illamasqua, this is a more expensive brand.

We wanted to see the variation between how long people take to get ready daily and on a night out. This could be something to look at, how people almost change their identity through makeup for different occasions.

15. WHICH ITEM OF MAKEUP COULD YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT AND WHY?

This was an open answered question so meant that we had a variation of answers. Lots of people answered with their item of makeup they could not live without which we were able to put into a graph. When they answered why, we had a variation of answers but the most common answer was because that was their feature which needed makeup. So people who answered mascara said this was because their eyelashes were short so needed mascara, or if someone answered foundation it was because their skin was bad and they needed this. From this question we have information to create an interview with a doctor to discover why people were makeup and what they can do to bring out these features without makeup.

17. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE STYLE OF MAKEUP?

We chose 7 different styles of makeup and asked our target audience which do they prefer.
