Audience Research: Questionnaire Conclusions

We conducted our questionnaires to see what peoples responses were so that we could find out what we needed to include in our own work. We carried them out on people who we believe fell into our target audience as this will have the most relevance to us. We wanted the questionnaire to ask questions that we believe would actually benefit us as well as give us an understanding of what people wanted to see. We made sure our questions were as simple as possible so it was easy for people to understand as well as making them closed questions in order for people to give quick, concise answers. This also meant that we could display and analyse the results in a much simpler and straightforward way. For example, we originally put a question that read “How much would you be willing to pay for a magazine” which we them improved on to become “How much would you be willing to pay for a magazine on a monthly basis”. This meant that people had to give us an answer that was within a certain time frame as well providing them with response boxes which made our job a lot easier. The layout of the questionnaire was neat and simple as well as being quite varied including a range of different style question. For example, some included images, others used response boxes, others required a personal response etc. We believe that this made the questionnaire more interesting to undertake which overall resulted in people giving positive feedback as well as taking it seriously.

We found out a range of things when collecting out results which ultimately will be beneficial to us. When asked what genre of music was most appealing, the majority said that R&B, Hip-Hop and Indie were most appealing. Question three helped give us ideas of the type of artists that are most appealing to our target audience which should help a lot when coming to select our front cover image. We used an existing contents page and asked people to list what they found most appealing as well as what they liked and disliked. This was very helpful as we will now take these things into consideration when making our contents. We asked a closed question relating to the price of the magazine so that our final magazine could be realistic fitting in with other competing music magazines. In order to get an idea of layout we asked if they preferred more images than text or vice versa or if they preferred an even balance. The most popular answer was an even balance closely followed by a more image to text ratio. We initially thought that people of our target audience would prefer a more structured theme as opposed to a scattered, unorganised layout however this was not the case as even though the majority chose a more structured them, this was only slightly favoured more than the other. One of the most helpful questions asked the audience to suggest features to include in the magazine- many useful suggestions were said such as games, freebies, cartoon section etc. Even though it’s a music magazine, from looking at other existing products we have seen that they are not always predominantly just music based. On question eight we did ask people if they preferred an action shot or a stationary shot on the front cover. An overwhelming amount of people said they preferred stationary shot however when we came to came to looking at the results of question ten which gave them a series of magazine covers asking them to identify their favourite- the most popular choice was an action shot of ‘The Kings of Leon’ from Q Magazine. The reasons given for this choice included it looking attractive, interesting, cool and modern as well as being ‘straight to the point’.
