IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE,

DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

Question One –

Page 2: Question one - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenage forms and conventions of real media products

Throughout all the media products, we have tried to used the form and conventions of real media singer-songwriter products. Such as performance shot, close-ups shots, lip syncing, natural lighting and realistic clothing. Some of the above conventions have been developed like close-up shots, but then added extreme close-ups while Evie is singing in the forest. We felt that this would create a sense of the viewer developing a personal connection with the artist. But it also means that the viewer could relate to the singer-songwriter artist as they are portrayed to be ‘normal’.

Music VideoCAMERA WORK –

POV (Point of View) – As you can see from the images to the

left the POV shot has been used in our music video. This allows the viewer of the music video to feel as though they can see what the artist in the video sees.

The top image is a POV of the artist looking at a happy family which she really wants to be apart as you can see from the middle this is her part which is represented through the uses of flashback.

CAMERA WORK – Close-ups –

The close-up shot has mostly been used to show the viewer the artist reaction. They were mostly taken in the urban location, as this was where the majority of the film was carried out. Therefore using close-ups in the forest location would not create the same effect.

The top image shown the artists reaction to the two friends having a conversation which she wants to be apart of.

Music VideoCAMERA WORK –

Establishing Shots – The use of establishing shots in the

different locations within the video means that the viewer doesn’t get confused with where the artists is. It also create a atmosphere for the music video.

The middle image is a establishing shot of the skate park, which we feel really represents a urban location. This image uses the rule of thirds as she is located to the right-hand side of the skate park sign. The image shown exaggerates the artists loneliness as you cannot see anyone else around her.

Music VideoCAMERA WORK –

Low and High Angled Shots – The high angled shots have been used in both the

top two images. We have used this in the urban location as she is walking down the street before she looks into the happy family situation. This make the artist look like she is being looked down on, as the artist is made to look small and less significant. This is exactly how we wanted the artist to be portrayed as.

The low angled shots have ne used in to the bottom images. We have used this in both locations but the one which is the most obvious is in the urban location. Where the artist is on the skate park ramp. This is where the girl is seen asgrowing in confidence and she is represented as being powerful as other people feel as though she is looking down on them.

Music VideoCAMERA WORK –

Over-The-Shoulder Shot – The over-the-shoulder shot enables the

designer of the music video to emphasise the artists emotions and her loneliness. This is done by placing the camera over the artists shoulder showing use what she sees. The artists watching other girls talking to each other. This helped us to exaggerates he loneliness and that she wants to be with them, but she lacks confidence.

It was also used when the girl is in the skate park writing thee song lyrics into her diary. This shot gives the viewer a closer look at what she is writing and how she feels. This is because it is a key part of our music video.

Music VideoCAMERA WORK –

Extreme Close-ups – The only place the extreme close-ups

have been used is throughout the artist singing. As this shows lip syncing and means that the viewer can see the artist singing the lyrics of the song. This also allow a personal connection to be created as its even more close-up and personal. Creating a more developed and personal connection with the videos audience.

Music VideoCAMERA WORK –

Mid Shots – Mid shots have been used numerous time in

our music video. As you can see from the print screen taken from our music video. One of the mid shot we felt that was required was a mid shot of both the artists and the boy who wants to help. This helps to establish the relationship between both characters, as you can see how close they are to each other. It represents that the artist is growing in confidence and therefore feels as though she can talk to anyone without any worries.

Music VideoCAMERA WORK –

Long Shots – Long shots shows the artist’s full body,

which is often shows a stereotype of a female as having a ‘perfect body’. This creates an idol of a artist as young girls aspire to look like this. Therefore the use of a long shot means the that the artists costume is revealed, showing the audience the artist’s style.

LOCATION – Urban/Destroyed Location –

Current music videos have convention which includes having a urban location featuring in the video. This could be shown as the ‘ideal’ lifestyle normally associated with rap and R&B music videos. But our video subverts this stereotype because it is a singer/songwriter genre we needed to make it look like it is a sad, lonely and a place which no one wants to be in. Therefore the location we selected looked destroyed creating a depressing atmosphere to the video.

Music VideoLOCATION –

Forest/Deserted Location – To develop it further, we decided to add

another location to the video. Which would add more mystery and excitement to the video, as these would both be contrasting locations. The urban location has connotations of 0f noise, chaos, busyness etc. So we decided that the other location needed to be the complete opposite. Which means a deserted location would need to be used. Therefore we decided to use a forest as the other location as this is peaceful, relaxing, peaceful and picture perfect. It also means that the performance shots could be taken in this location as the trees could help with the framing of imagery.

DigipakAnother typical conventions of digipak in our chosen genre as most digipak in the singer-songwriter genre only have one

song on the album. This

will be the artists most popular

or well known

song, as this will

help to promote the album. This

means that the

digipak will have

to have related

image on it to the song. This

is why visuals

from the music

video are the best thing to use to

help promote to artist.

The conventionused in singer-songwriter musicvideos’ are tohave a verysimple yetattractive image. The images onthe digipak havehad to be editedslightly as the original colourwas to darkTherefore only only the colour contrast has be slightly altered. Singer-Songwriter artists promote themselves as being normal’, which means that they can create connection with the target audience. Therefore a simple, normal and natural image is the most suitable for the digipak images.

DigipakFRONT COVER –

As you can see the image in the top right hand-side image is the image we have chosen to use as the front cover. This image is similar to the image used on the artists Emeli Sande front cover (bottom right hand-side), as this is a typical convention of the genre. As it is just the artists and a simple background. You can also see that the rule of thirds has been used to frame the artist so that the text could be clearly shown on the left-hand side. Having this simple layout means that the audience could identify who the artist is and it also link in with all the music video and the advert.

The artists name ‘Evangeline May’ is larger than the song title ‘Read All About It’, as the artist name is more important than the song title. But to bring both The lines together we decided to use the same font, which we also decided to use throughout all the promotional products, which would then bring them all together to create one strong promotional package.

DigipakBACK COVER –

The image in the top right hand-side is the image we have selected for the digipak back cover and is also taken from our music video. The image in the bottom right corner is from Emeli Sandé CD, yet again this is very simple which is a convention of the genre. This is why we decided that the simple image of just the forest and the artist. Thee rule of thirds has been used again so that the bright splash of colour is only in one place meaning that the viewers attention is in one place, therefore we have stuck to the conventions of the genre as it is very simple. We have also stuck to the conventions of the genres digipak with only a limited amount of information of the back and the barcode which is required on all digipak.

On the back of Sande digipak you have a list of all the songs included in the CD where as in our digipak we are selling this as just a single therefore there is no need to include the list of songs on the back. Again the same font has been, which will bring all the promotional products together creating one strong promotional package.

Advert

In all of the promotional product which we have created we have used the exact image, therefore we would have a continuity problem with in all our products. But it also means that it is more recognisable to people when they see the advert in a magazine.

The image of the artists in the forest location, conveys the singer-songwriter genre as this represent the artist as being unique and very original. This is a main part of the genre and is something which we have tried to include throughout the project. The image has been used throughout the promotional package as its included on the front cover of the digipak and at the end of the music video. The target audience for the whole promotional package is teenagers. Female teenagers are interested in looking fashionable and look up to celebrities, so through buying there stars product they will feel like they are developing a personal connection with the artist which then makes then want to buy more and more of the stars products.
