ENZA: How do you respond clearly and compassionately to someone who is suffering? On a practical level, dont deny appearances. Telling someone who hasnt yet realized their true nature that their suffering is not real because the entity they believe themselves to be is not real, wont do them any good while they believe that such an entity exists.

Q: There are people in my life playing out their old traumas and stories over and over again. How can I help them see that they are not the person in the story?

Do whatever you are able to do to help others in practical terms while you realize that the best help you can give is to help them become aware of the root cause of their suffering. That root cause is the belief that they are individuals who are separate from the totality of being.

Its the energy behind the words that is importantOnly when you know who you really are and have ended suffering for yourself can you truly help others do the same. If you arent aware of the root cause of your own suffering, how can you help others to be aware of it? The Vedantic sage, Nisargadatta Maharaj, put it this way, You yourself must be beyond the need of further help to put others beyond the need of further help.
